PSA: don't enter vehicle that is touching a tree
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to treetop82's topic in General Discussion
haha, reminds me of watching a guy get stuck into a tree, he decided to chop said tree down. Tree went down, but truck flipped upside down as tree fell. Apparently there were roots involved which must have ripped the ground from underneath the truck! -
I don't trust any object that can be tampered with near spawn LOL.. Why would it be there? Whether out in the open or overly hidden... I would not take a sealed bottle from a public urinal, I would not even touch it!

15 apples a day keep the doctor away...
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to WolfgangErikson's topic in General Discussion
hmmm, do you mean the 'wobbly crosshair' mechanic, or 'align the X and Y dots to center'? haha, I didn't think of that, not a bad idea, but also not seemingly very DayZ-like. I agree that it could possibly end up more frustrating after time, like searching rocks. I am really curious to see what happens to that type of game mechanic as it develops, whether it becomes deliberately hard to pick a normally accessible item, or whether we are to use a little imagination and suppose that there was a 'certain' perfect size and shape stone (or apple) that we were looking for and reject anything but the best. -
Armored, silent, ninja, stealth zombies + no loot = win?I
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to Insane Ruffles's topic in General Discussion
I was only commenting on what I felt about apples. I agree that these things will be tweaked eventually, so I guess my point is moot, but I just posted here for the sake of discussion, I guess. I'm not going to tell anyone how to play the game, but myself, I could care less about PVP and weapons. I just don't care for standing around too much.. anything but standing around is pretty okay with me. -
I agree, but I also like the increased need for players to actually get together and trade sought after items.

15 apples a day keep the doctor away...
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to WolfgangErikson's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much as I had just said elsewhere. There should be some other means of making apple picking a challenge other than being a pure time sink. Whether they rot in my bag, possibly ruin a 'slot' for a certain amount of time Make me sick after a certain amount of apples eaten/per minutes Maybe picking or holding apple attracts more Zombies Maybe a % for injury with some trees, creating a risk of this choice of meal depending on circumstance I don't know, anything, but I would rather be able to get the fruit in the first place and deal with the consequence later. -
Armored, silent, ninja, stealth zombies + no loot = win?I
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to Insane Ruffles's topic in General Discussion
I think it's a pretty fun way to play, one time it was raining, and I was trying to balance hunger with apple picking and staying warm and dry. The only problem I have is that I can see a tree full of apples that I can't pick. I would rather them provide even less fuel, but be more plentiful. If I need to fill up coat, vest, pants pockets and a bag, so be it, that is the compromise I'll take. Standing in one place hoping and praying to 'found a thing' probably could use a bit of tweaking, but again I do like the overall mechanic. -
Search Trash can option or Dumpster diving
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to CGNoodlePot (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
It may be too much like Epoch. It's one thing to be able to walk in a building and see what's there. It's another to have to search every bin hoping and praying that something is in there. The latter becomes tedious at times... a guessing game. -
Have you ever run into the only other guy on the server?
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to IgnobleBasterd's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, logged into 3 person server. Logged in Apts in Severo, as soon as the environment initialized I saw someone out the window walking towards my building.... -
MP5 least practical weapon in game?
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to Dagwood's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure about the MP5K, I have yet to find a clip  ... tired of holding on to that thing honestly. -
The next Survivor Gamez, I believe is this weekend. Incidentally I remember watching one of my fav streams and he glitched into a birds eye view of the map, similar to the spectate view from SGZ. The streamer was a bird that could fly anywhere and listen in on players. We were all wondering if it would be a feature to be used later.

Guide to etiquette? How to be new right?
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to CabbageNPeas's topic in New Player Discussion
I find that it helps to utilize some serious RP tactics just to engage the 'bandit' to want to listen to ya. Entertain em for a bit. -Carry a book around. -Ask where is the nearest bathroom -offer to team up and be a gopher May or may not work but if you're fast and witty, it may buy you a at least a minute! -
I would rather a pet dog. That would be my #1 request. It gets lonely out there!

what do you think of the current inventory block system?
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to Wookieenoob's topic in General Discussion
Volume system does sound good, but I hope it doesn't become something that we have to be too worried about. I know in Fallout games, it can become meta. Slow walking the map to get all those scrap metals home haha The current system doesn't really bother me, although I understand it doesn't really make sense. I remember the first time I saw the gas canister in the backpack. I could not stop laughing. -
Its a little wonky, but I am confident that it will be worked out when their ready. Just RP it. There is an illness going around Cherarus LoL.
-
I like where you're going with this, but can't help to think that it will be you going thru hoops and loops, just to get shot up when you're done. :P

I can only guess that they went with the less tedious/more player friendy route with food loss vs having to wait ~30 secs for every can. But it doesn't then explain the picking apples from tree phenomena. What should be the fastest way to grab a low tier snack is in fact the most tedious in game! There is also a little cute charm to chopping a can open with a machete and losing 80% of the food. The game does have it's little humour and I do hope they retain some of that in lieu of 'realism'. OK the fire hydrant was a bit much, maybe. But other than zuchinni, most of the fresh foods aren't that sustainable. You'll still have to sit there and eat quite a bit which will take up a certain amount of time rather than slashing open cans with your fist!! Cans will always be the most desired for efficiency, I think. Rice is a whole 'nother story, and I think cereal is pretty accurate. Overall I agree with your angle. If you take the time to loot less common items, you should gain a benefit over the guy that found low tier items within the first 5 minutes of gameplay. I think that's what you're getting at. Me, I just like the idea of having a reason to go off and hide, go somewhere off the beaten path to get your health up, rather than standing in the street LOL. It also adds potential funny mini role play scenarios/strategies.
-
LOL, my goodness. OP... I love that idea. If we're going to be able to use screwdrivers, than there should be a cost/risk to make the can opener more of a desirable goal. It also means that some folks will just as well skip using canned food until they find the opener, and that might lead people into less obvious food gathering locations/strategies. edit: of course this also means that you're a little screwed as a fresh spawn on the coast... but that means you gather your cans, go off and hide and open them in the woods before going off.

Roasting and Grilling with Sharpened Sticks
TheHermit (DayZ) replied to Draco122's topic in Suggestions
shish ke babs Yes. This is a great idea. :beans: :beans: !! LOL it would look kinda like a splint in the inventory, except you could see little sizzling bits of meats and peppers! Maybe eat a 15% chunk of it off at a time. "You have eaten a chunk of pork" -
I'm not for this. I like the game, but when it becomes all about exploring the most gruesome ways to kill and discard of other players, it kinda gets a little much. Where do you draw the line? I'm sure there are other games out there that cater to people fulfilling the most brutal of deaths upon other players, but there is far more to DayZ as a survival game than that. That is going the direction of killer terrorist simulator. 'Lets add the most vile sicko ways to dispose of the other players that enjoy playing the game. Hey get killed and start again... bored with it? Well we'll add more and more gruesome ways to die for your pleasure.... no thanks.

TheHermit (DayZ) replied to joe_mcentire's topic in General Discussion
I don't doubt anyone's abilities. I have no clue what goes in behind their closed doors, to presume such is ignorant and silly. Do you have a job? How would you feel if casual outsiders criticized your unfinished work in progress during a status presentation? If you have ever worked on anything of any substance, you ought to understand this. We do not know anything. At all. Judge the developers on the finished (developed) product. You have to wait until the product has been developed before you have a right to doubt their ability. Not during. Guess what. Shit happens good and horribly ALL the time during development. It usually happens behind closed doors. Have some respect for the people that do jobs that you can't do. And have some respect for the people (that you call fanboys) that are patient and understand what they've bought into. Grab a lesson in patience and respect. -

I think it's an excellent idea! It would be annoying at times... as it should!
