So I have a writing assignment due - Write a fictional interpretation of something you're unfamiliar with. Since I'm fairly new to DayZ, and it's currently number one on my "me" time list, I've decided to write a Suspense/Horror story, and slowly share it with you guys. So here's the first short "chapter" I guess you could say. If I get a good response from it I'll keep posting chapters every so often. So if you enjoy and want to know what happens please leave some feedback! :) EDITED*** I've revised my story. First person story telling just wasn't working. Hope you enjoy! The Myth of Jacob - Chapter One: Awake at last. He opened his eyes slowly, staring out at a deserted beach, cast aside like the bits of trash strewn across the sand and weeds. Bracing his palms and fingertips into the coarse sand the stranger lifted himself to his knees and forced his eyes open wide. He was weak, which was all too apparent by the onset of hunger pains, while his dry, cracked lips only gave tell to his thirst. The man stood up, slowly, struggling to regain his awareness. “Where am I?” he asked aloud, only to be met by the sound of waves crashing into the shore behind him. “Who am I?” There were no memories, no reminders, not even as much as a recollection of anything before that moment. “An ID!” he thought to himself “Please, let me at least have an ID!” He said patting down the pockets of his blue jeans, and shaking out the folds of his T shirt. The stranger stared at the ground, scanning where he’d lain, praying that he’d find something, anything, that could give him some answers. While his hopes were high, the only treasure to be found was a lonely flashlight, half buried in the sand. The man reached down slowly and took the light into his hands. His fingers trembled steadily as they clasped the flashlight, bringing it closer for inspection. “At least this works” he grumbled underneath of his breathe, and for the first time since he’d been awake he’d realized the severity of his situation. Not only was he thirsty, hungry, and completely unaware of who he was, but he could see his own breathe! A sudden chill swept in, encasing his body in a sense of urgency. He couldn’t sit still any longer. Step by step he made his way towards what looked to be houses. It wasn’t a terribly long walk, but the weather certainly wasn’t helping. Eventually, his steps transitioned from the crunching of frozen blades of grass, to the “tap” of his soles on pavement. He approached the first sign he saw, and read aloud, “Welcome to Камышово”. “I don’t even know what language that is…” He began to think to himself, before having his concentration cut off by a loud and piercing shriek. “Steady” he said to himself in a reassuring tone, while grasping the flashlight so tight that his knuckles lost color. Focused on the direction the noise came from all was, oddly enough, quiet. There were no animals that he could see, no people, not even a “buzz” from the electrical lines above. As soon as he began to lower his hands he was stricken with horror. Tearing out of the wood-line like a wild animal was a massive man, screaming and shrieking with every step he took. At this moment, fight or flight kicked in, and the stranger sprinted for the first house that his eyes fell on. He barreled through the street, jumping the fence, and throwing his momentum onto the porch. “Help!” he screamed while pounding on the door. “PLEASE! SOMEONE OPEN THE DOOR!” His cries were met with nothing but sore fists. Panicked, while hearing the pounding footsteps of his attacker closing in, he made one last plea “PLEASE JUST LET ME IN!” A single gunshot rang out, and all was silent. To be continued.

The Myth of Jacob - Chapter 1 [Updated]

For the same reason every character in Inglorious Bastards spoke English. Just to appeal to who you're writing for, while keeping authenticity where it matters. -
The Myth of Jacob - Chapter 1 [Updated]

Okay guys, I'll admit. I wrote that hastily. I've taken your advice and reworked it. I can say that even I'M curious to see where I'm going to take the story. Hope this one is better than the first, because this is how I'm going to proceed. -
The Myth of Jacob - Chapter 1 [Updated]
StarLord (DayZ) replied to StarLord (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Fair enough! Allow me to have another go at this. Keep in mind that I'm being vague intentionally to begin with. Also, I've never written in the first person... which now that I've gotten feedback I'm going to switch it up. Where are there spelling mistakes? -
I have a few poll questions I'm going to be asking from now until Sunday, and this is the first! The poll is multiple choice so you can add a compass to your scenario if you'd like. Enjoy learning More about your fellow survivors! EDIT**** I have added an in-game map option.

haha wow, props to you!

Smersh Vests: Holy grail? + Mi-8 crash sites in general.
StarLord (DayZ) replied to OmpaLompa's topic in General Discussion
I have yet to come across a helicopter crash -
In a distant land known as a .49 server Not too long along my player was energized and hydrated, but bleeding and without rags. I managed to find a shirt to rip into rags, but fell unconscious maybe 15 seconds after I applied them. I checked the time because I had heard about long unconscious waits. Sat back, windowed the game, and watched Netflix while keeping an eye on my status. Low and behold I had made it through about 3/4 of an episode of Dexter before getting fed up and respawning. Respawned, super pissed, gave it a few buildings worth of loot and went to bed.

I'll agree, but that's why I made it multiple choice. Any-who, I print off colored maps on bigger paper and just set it on my desk almost like a calendar. It didn't start out that way. At first I would travel up and down the coast, from Cherno to Rify, and I can remember thinking “Wow… What a massive world.” Almost in a sense like I wasn’t ready to get off of the coast. Later, I looked at the map via an iPhone app "Bean Coast". I would figure out what town I was in, which direction another town was in, and base my movements off of the coast line. I later got into using a compass. Eventually even that became problematic. You can't really use the app with one hand, which was hard while trying to navigate without taking my finger off the [W] button. So I decided to print a map out on 11X17 inch paper. I can glance down while running for a correlation of roads and such without having to get in a safe place to get my bearing. On the other hand, a friend I play with is really bad at navigating, so when we’re trying to meet up I’ll find a safe house, close the door, and minimize the game. I’ll pull up a map and give him turn-by-turn directions. I have some more poll questions I’m going to ask soon. I think these kinds of polls can give other people good ideas and help them realize that others are bad ideas. So I just hope you guys can find some kind of value in them! I know I am.

It's so interesting to me how the real majority of players are familiar from the mod. I never played the mod.
-
I just print out a map on 11x17 paper. We have a plotter at work. Maybe I'll print a 30"x46" map ha

I was gonna say! Lol

Anyone excited for the .357 Lever action?
StarLord (DayZ) replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
I have guns all around my house, and what do I keep by my bed side? My Marlin lever action 30-30. Old Reliable. -
I knew I was forgetting something. In-game map added! No sir, if you're using road signs it's by memory or by map.

So in my ventures last night I ran into something really weird. I came across an area that had backpacks everywhere, and I mean everywhere. All colors and types. Outside of every door to the barracks north of Veresnik there were improvised backpacks, all had small loot in them. It wasn't until I got upstairs in the jail that I found the mother Teresa of backpacks. It had four protective cases in it, each slammed full of ammo, binoculars, medical supplies, and attachments. I had just been there a couple of hours earlier, so I was under the impression it was kind of a setup? Needless to say I looted and darted towards the NWAF (which is where you can read of my demise in the topic titled "Come on, Man"). So anyway I got to thinking, I have NEVER seen a protective case until then, or binoculars, in almost 45 hours of playing. Where are you finding these?

I feel like I'm missing something....
StarLord (DayZ) replied to Grundlesmuggler's topic in General Discussion
I currently play with two of my real world friends. One is actually a SWAT team member, and the other is in the military with me. It's pretty nice because we all have a good mindset for tactics, but the trouble is getting everyone online at the same time. I have plans to start a tactical clan. Be the police team of DayZ. You have bandit issues? Need rescued? Humanitarian aid? Jump on our team-speak, give us some intel, we respond. This of course is impossible at the moment but hey, I'll make it happen eventually. [The Unit] EDIT** This would be for DayZ glory. Kind of makes the game more fun when you have more of a purpose than just surviving.. -
I doubt it. I'm not a shoot on sight kind of guy.
-
I'm not really sure what it was? I wish I had taken a screen shot. From now on when something weird happens that I need to post about I'll be sure to screenshot or just not post about it. I was really convinced at the time that it was a trap. May have been a dupe? I only say that because there were 3 or 4 Pilotka's on one bunk.

Etiquette around people sitting by a fire?
StarLord (DayZ) replied to Death By Crowbar's topic in General Discussion
I've come across some gents sitting by a fire on a daytime server right outside of Cherno. Kind of silly of them, but I avoided them just in case THEY were hostile. Odd's are the outcome is no different than someone stopping to get a drink. You avoid them, or try to make frannnssss. -
No. .49 ATL Villayer server.
-
Nope
-
I myself am partial to the NWAF, Barracks north of Veresnik, and Novo. Fun fact about me. I hate Cherno and Elektro with a passion.

Okay so I realize there are probably a million topics like this, but I've really got to vent in my own light. Last night i'm playing DayZ. Made it to the barracks north of Veresnik. Waiting on my pal to show up. I log out to go on a beer run while he works his way from the North East airfield. I return, log in, and All of the sudden I'm freezing, I have a fracture, I'm hungry, and I'm sick. Come on... So realizing my screen was turned gray VERY quickly, I opt to log out, and wait on my pal to arrive with antibiotics, charcoal tabs, and a splint. He finally arrives and I log back in and do what I can to heal myself. Sick wouldn't go away, but the splint worked. So he's out looting the barracks and he sees someone, I run upstairs in the jail and the server loses connection. I log back in. My buddy still has all of his gear, and is in the same place. I however am now a world away with zero gear. Just now, So I'm playing, hitting up houses and gearing up to make the trip back north to the barracks so we can play together this evening. I log out to help my fiance do a little grilling. Come back an hour later and jump back on. All is well. I log back out 30 minutes later to eat lunch. Log back in. I have respawned. WHAT THE F*&@ I understand that you shouldn't get attached to your gear, but come on. I should at least be able to enjoy it for more than an hour or two without the scare of loosing everything. I enjoy the build up, but I also enjoy moving from town to town comfortably without having to stop at every house for supplies. This is super ridiculous. For the very first time since I've played the SA i'm saying this, very disappointed in the game right now. I can understand the updates. I can understand the occasional crashes, and zombie glitches, hell I can even forgive the hit system.... but if I can't enjoy what I'm working for even for a day... Then what's the point? Come on, man. FYI this is all on the same server. I don't server hop,
