Got back into Dayz again this weekend. Had the usual effect on me - alternating tense (paraniod!) and relaxing moments. Played the game on and off during Saturday. I took a long winding journey north from the coast, foraging and picking up bits of gear as I went. After several hours, I had gathered samples of almost every ammo type in the game...except for the ones that would fit the 2 guns I had found! Arg! I avoided military bases, or going deep into cities. I didn't come across any players, but battled some Z's. Eventually I had gathered a satisfying bag of loot, and took stock. My favourite items were present...mountain backpack, compass, binoculars, and several canteens. A selection of food and medical equipment, including water purifiers. I dropped a bunch of stuff I had been lugging around...like 2 full quivers of crossbow bolts! With glee I also examined my two primary weapons - a pristine fireaxe (gotten at considerable risk from the outskirts of a city), and for the first time ever...an MP5 with 3 attachments including scope, and several full magazines. Mmmm, my preeeecious.

Combat tactics vs muppet - love it! Haha! :D Funny that 'Spidey Sense Tingling' eh? Seems to work even while playing a game. And why shouldn't it? Ask any medium. ^_^

Returning to Dayz after a long break, I had some trouble at first finding equipment and supplies. My character died a number of times from dehydration! Finally I got it to work. Spent some time in Novo. Scrounged enough to survive. I was even able to get a pump action shotgun, a Longhorn, and ammo for both. Blasted one Z from long range with the Longhorn, and several more with the shotgun. Now what? I decided to be daring and head to the big central airbase. I travelled through zombie infested towns. Drank water from ponds. Picked up some bits of supplies along the way. When I arrived at the airfield it was night time. I couldn't see any movement, so I approached the tents at the northern end of the base. Once inside the small gatehouse building, I spotted a Z shambling aimlessly across the perimeter road in the distance, and taking carefull aim, I pegged it with my scoped Longhorn. The shot sounded like thunder, echoing across the base. Wondering if I might have attracted the attention of more Z's - or other scavengers - I kept watch for a while. No movement or sound. Against my better judgement, I scaled a gun tower for a better view, aware that I would be silhouetted against the night sky. Then I readied my shotgun and began searching the tents. Lean pickins. I was searching the third row of tents when I started to get a feeling that I wasn't alone. I don't know why. I looked around me in all directions. I thought I saw movement in some bushes in the middle distance. A zombie? Must be a trick of the low light conditions. I zoomed in, and could no longer see any movement or humanoid shape. I entered the last tent. A pair of old boots. I turned to face the door. I got that funny feeling again, but no movement, no sound except the wind. Time to search the barracks I thought to myself. I exited, turning toward the bushes where I thought I saw movement earlier. Suddenly from behind me the sound of rapid semi automatic fire! The darkness was lit up by bright flashes. Time seemed to slow down. But I knew I was done for. I never saw my attacker. The ambush gave me a really good jump-scare! I stared in surprised silence at the "you are dead" text, and exited. Almost immediately I wished that I hadn't, because I would have liked to say something to my attacker. Ask him or her if they had tracked me, or if I was simply a target of opportunity. I don't know if you can still communicate once you are dead. Does anyone know?

Was not playing for 6 months... what's the Top 10 things I should be doing?
Concord (DayZ) replied to cuddly_rabbit's topic in New Player Discussion
It's been a very long while since I've played this game too. Did a couple hours today. WHERE has all the loot gone? The whole place seemed empty. No backpacks, guns, ammo, chow, duds. Nadda! Well, I did find a pen and a wool dress, both of which I MacGyvered. ;) After dieing multiple times from dehydration or starvation on various servers, I finally gave it up. This is just a temporary aberration I assume?? -
Nice work Aggathor. I've watched several of your Dayz vids with great interest. For science!!!

I've either found the gun and no mags for ages, or come across multiple mags but no Sporter. Had to ditch the mags to make room. In the end, I kinda gave up on it.

After a rough time getting started again after the 0.49 wipe, I finally got some basic equipment, and was healthy and healed. My son decided to join me in some Dayz again, and he too was having a rough time as a bambi, with zombies...and players. He discovered where he was located, so I changed direction and began navigating to the east coast (gotta luv that compass!). I looted as I went, and eventually had a fire axe and a Makarov with some clips. A mountain backpack with some trusty tools, and a worn leather cowboy hat. I came to a small city and spotted a multi-story office block or school. Having watched a video recently about the Longhorn, I thought I'd try my luck. Up the stairs I went, around and around. Suddenly, a player appears, running down the stairs, with fire axe in hand. Thinking quickly, I just kept going, dodging around him, with a friendly greeting over my shoulder - no reply. I imagined he was a startled as I was. I go up several more flights of stairs to the top landing. To my surprise, I see him coming back up after me, this time with his axe at the striking position! "What the hell" I think to myself. Not wishing a confrontation that will not end well for either of us, and not wanting my gear ruined on the way to joining my son (I had gathered extra stuff for him), I decide to try the trick again. As he charges at me, I duck past him, and start back down the stairs at a run. I spot a zombie coming up the stairs, and dodge past him as well. A second one appears from below, and I get past him too. A third in the lobby of the building. Finally I'm free and clear, running through the streets, muttering to my son (who's in the same room as me), about the crazed player. As I do regularly, I had a look over my shoulder...and to my surprise, this guy is still chasing me through the streets, axe raised, pack of Z's on his tail. Crazed AND persistant! As I'm running, I ready my Makarov. I stop and whirl around, ready to end this little hunt...and he's gone. I pop a hopper, and then leave the city. As I travel, I keep checking my six to see if I'm being followed. I'm shaking my head at the play style of this guy, chasing a player so doggedly, despite zombies taking such a keen interest. I consider returning to the city and trying to hunt him down in turn, but decide against it, and continue towards my rendezvous.

Hiya fellow DayZ'ers. I have started this thread to share some of my stories from the game. Share your own random stories if you so wish. Game on!

Watch out for Z's spawning in unlikely places too. I had some come at me (bro!) next to one of those radio towers with the little shack. Never had that before. I had my previous character before the wipe for a long time. Now that I've been forced to resawn again (several times), and being more experienced (Steam says 102 hours now!), I've got a different view of gear. My one essential bit of equipment is the fire axe. With that, and some rags, I'm good to go. All the rest is bonus. :-) Edit: another Z point: I was taking a brief break from my work to play a spot of Dayz (I work for myself). I heard an email notification, and thinking I was fairly safe, alt-tabbed out. I quickly forwarded it - took about 10 seconds all up. When I tabbed back in, my character was being attacked by a zombie. Killed it and bandaged. Thing is, while a coastal town was visible in the distance, I was deep in the woods, high up on a hill. In earlier versions of the game I travelled many hours in just such locations without seeing a player or a Z for days.

First day trying the 0.49 update. First thing I notice is my character has been wiped. I knew it was probably coming, but...sigh. ;-) My character was the most geared up I've ever had. But never did find a damned PS01 scope! I'm on the east coast somewhere, a large city. Within minutes I have an entourage of Z's on my arse. I high-tail it into a fire station, shut the door behind me, and climb all 3 flights of stairs. But no go. Before I can start searching for equipment, a congo line of Z's are coming up the stairs at me. I get trapped up there with the stairwell blocked and no weapons, and goodnight. I respawn in the same area. This time I get some basic gear. I come across another player who's geared in the firestation, but the encounter is friendly (despite his scary clown mask) and we go our own ways. A few minutes later I hear a voice, someone calling for help. The guy sounds like he's young, maybe quite a bit too young to be playing this game. He's being chased by a pack of about 8 Z's!! Never seen anything like it. He's obviously got no gear and is calling for help. I try to wade into the fray, but my crowbar isn't up to the task, and soon I'm in trouble as well. We run in different directions, flapping like chickens trying to fly the fox. As I'm running through the city, I pass a player on the second floor roof of a school. I call out to him "hey hi buddy", as I pass by, crowbar in hand, pack of Z's snapping at my heels. He sees me - he shoots me! What a bugger. I don't go down however. I dodge and weave with him still taking shots. As soon as I turn a corner, I'm out of sight of the shooter and the Z's, and duck into a doorway and shut it behind me. I climb the stairs double-quick, and bandage myself in the nick of time. Seconds later, I hear him shooting again. Then closer. I peer cautiously out of the top floor window. I get a perfect view of my sniper fellow - running along the street. He stops, turns, fires some shots behind him. He turns and runs again. Moments later a horde of Z's goes motoring by, hot on his trail. Justice. The twit! I wait for a minute, search the room, and then I'm out the back door and headed for the hills.

Starting to think I'm too nice of a player.
Concord (DayZ) replied to OptimumVision's topic in General Discussion
Even though it's only a game, it shows that player had no honour. The in-game character is not alive obviously, but the person controlling it is. For him to shoot you and mock your generosity and trust after you gave him valuable stuff shows their real-life character to a degree. If I had a wad of chewing tobacco, I'd spit to show my contempt of his actions. -
Decided to run for the hills. Was chased by a couple of Z's, and one military Z followed me way out of the military base. Turned an tapped the trigger, and 2 bullets brought him down. Geez I like the ammo capacity on the AKM drum mag. Took Xbow's advice and headed north. Not a single 2-legged seen. What great looking graphics this game has - love the terrain. Drank from my water bottle (knocking myself prone in the process (again - not the first time I've experienced this glitch), and refilled with rain water. Eventually I came to a plains area, with a strange looking ground cover...realised I'd reached the northern map edge! Not sure if I'll be lucky enough to find a scope before the wipe, but it's been fun looking for it. This thread has really increased my knowledge of the game, and the behavior of the infected freaks. Appreciate the help - great community here. Game on!

Ditto. ^^^

Voted it up to change, good work Robert. Evil Minion, your idea sounds like a good balance. But how much would it impact performance to have it otherwise? There's other games that have 'crowds'. Is it because of the map size?

I didn't know that ld-airgrafix, thanks for the tip.
