How did you get a Private Shard already - are they available to everyone who could rent one now?

So the title pretty much says it - I'm curious what well known HERO clans and groups out there have the best reputations in the DayZ community. I think the most helpful comments will be from members of one established hero group commending another hero group (not their own) they admire and respect. This is to keep this from being a recruitment thread for one's own organization. I really want to know reputation-wise who is respected out there and why and what the community's consensus is on this. I'm most interested in hearing about those that are extremely well-led, active, organized, committed to their values, and tactically proficient and effective, and that don't take any *#@& from members who are not committed to a pretty strict hero-type ethic, however they define it. Let me emphasize that I am NOT looking to be recruited - this is not a recruitment thread, but a discussion on what it takes to run a well led hero group. Thanks!

I can add to this that in our tents, clothing items - a rain coat, a rider's jacket and a pair of hunter's pants - have disappeared and nothing else - not a single item otherwise - has gone missing in almost 2 weeks. Neither the rain coat nor the rider's jacket had anything in their slots when placed in the tents.

Wow, I almost can't even begin to dissect the thoughtlessness of this statement. You don't even have to be a serious student of anthropology or history to know how ridiculous such a point of view is. So in your own words, sociopaths who kill for fun have the evolutionary advantage, and you think history proves this? Maybe higher evolution always wins -sure. But to understand evolution as being evidenced by simply whoever can mindlessly and dispassionately kill the most effectively and enjoy it while doing it is just ignorant and sad - in the scientific community that would be called de-evolution; the change of a species into more primitive animalistic forms. Look it up and educate yourself. The highest developed, most knowledgeable, safest, most thriving human societies throughout known history - the ones that have contributed to scientific knowledge, understanding of the universe, and advancement of the human race - all have a few things in common despite different worldviews, religions, etc. Among those are a deep sense of order, some rule of law, an idea of the common good, a desire to make order and beauty as they see it out of chaos, and to band together in order to be stronger and survive and thrive more effectively. Sociopaths do not in fact have the advantage. Instead, in reality they have the greatest disadvantage over time. Rather than build something of lasting value, they will kill off the human capital around them - sure this make work for a very short time, but they will make enemies and expose themselves to the danger of those they prey on as their prey tries to defend itself. When they do try to band together, because of their psychotic nature, they will only be able to find the company of those as twisted and morally vacant as themselves, or of those who eventually resent their manipulation. This will further expose them to the kind of back-stabbing, betrayal, and impotent power-hungry ambition that destroys both individuals and any form of thriving society between individuals. No, my friend, the morally vacant sociopath does not represent the highest form of human evolution, but rather the lowest form of de-evolution. Qualities like trust, compassion, nobility, selflessness, courage, and integrity are almost universally valued and striven for amongst the human race, and certainly so among those societies that have thrived, because they foster the environment for advancement in knowledge and understanding, artistic beauty, creativity, and plenty in terms of material needs if not also for some less understood, less concrete value of the human psyche or soul (depending on the worldview). There are only a few antiquated voices of note in academia who tried to promote the view you espouse and they are better known today for the destroyers of human beauty and life they inspired in the modern age than anything else. So if you want to come right out and say you admire the likes of Joseph Stalin or Adolf *&%^ or whoever, then go for it, but otherwise please have some personal intelligence and integrity and stop promoting these silly thoughts.

It's really sad when people can't do anything but turn a game like DayZ into a mindless PvP game and act like they don't have the capacity to understand how playing with some imagination or desiring immersive realism can be fun. Think The Walking Dead. I'm so sick of hearing the useless and ignorant arguments that "in real life everyone would just kill everyone else." In real life 90% of people would NOT be sociopaths killing everyone every chance they get, using their own life to hunt down and kill others for entertainment "fun," no matter what the situation. History proves that. And if you think that history has nothing to say for chaos on par with a zombie apocalypse, then sadly you don't know history. Yes, there will be some demented crazies who surface when society doesn't pose inhibition, and woe to us all when they get into power - and yes there will be some who feel they must kill those they come across for their own protection, but the majority of average people will try to create some order amidst the chaos and will be averse to murder when avoidance would suffice - again - history proves this and it can't even be argued otherwise unless you are totally ignorant or only pick isolated anecdotes that are not representative. Again, yes there will be individuals and even groups that amount to murdering psychopaths - many of us simply feel disappointed that the PvP mentality puts the DayZ experience far out of balance with reality and feel that by creating like-minded communities focused on immersion and at least an attempt at realism the game would be deeper and better. Some of us envision a DayZ world that feels more like an immersive reality, where, yes, you might be killed outright without question by a psychopath or bandit group, but you're far more likely to have a different encounter - either avoidance, robbery, or perhaps warning shots, or maybe even a tentative helping hand. There are just very few people who will stoop to murdering outright for self interest or for fun the way they will in a video game they are playing with a PvP mindset. It eventually comes down to whether you want to PvP or whether you want DayZ to be a more immersive role playing experience like finding yourself really living in this environment. Some choose the former, and many are hoping that private shard servers will provide a platform that makes the latter possible, but that would of course necessitate the exclusion of the PvP types from these communities. To each their own or something like that.

Those are great ideas - I do know that in either the last status report or the last dev stream there was mention that as soon as they finish with adding all the towns they want they're going to go back through everything and make it look more appropriate / run down.

I agree with you guys and have seen it stated before that axes become damaged way too quickly. The other thing is that IRL, you would gather smaller pieces of dead fallen wood in the forrest rather than going around cutting down huge pine trees to build a fire. Dead dry pieces of "firewood" should be relatively abundant and easy to find in the forests and you wouldn't want to chop fresh live wood for this purpose. The cutting down trees to gather timber thing should be used when barricading (using pieces of wood to block windows and doors in buildings) is in game. Lastly, I think when persistence (having a camp or base) is a working mechanism, some of this stuff with having to use a lot of tools like pick axes, stones, axes, and maintain them, will actually be a fun thing, as you'll be able to store more of the tools and implements you need at your base and take them with you for specific tasks. I rather like the idea that it would be pretty hard to carry everything you could ever need on your body at all times. Especially when they implement a more realistic weight system you won't want to carry a crazy load out all the time. Having a camp will mean that you can take only what you need and travel light for, say, a hunting trip, taking only a small pack, a rifle, a small amount of ammo, water, maybe a couple of items of food and a knife and a few basic medical items, and leaving your other stuff at a secure camp. This, to me, is really immersive and more realistic to how a person would survive longer term and will add a good dimension to the game for the survivalist.

This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. You want instant respawn to get into the action / die / rinse / repeat? Go play one of the hoards of mindless twitch shooters. That is not what DayZ is. If you hate the process of finding your friends you are playing the wrong game.

Aren't there a lot more factors in play than just the weapon or round and the general area of the body at which you think you probably hit someone? Don't forget that the kind of gear they had such as a vest and even how many items were packed into their clothes, and even more importantly, their existing health level at the time of the damage play a huge factor. You don't know whether someone was fully healthy when you shot them or whether they were already extremely low on blood and in shock from previous wounds, and starving. All of these factors are much more likely than some kind of inconsistency with the mechanic of the weapon or round.

Good job, OP. A mature and intelligent showing of how being a bandit is completely different than a KOS'er. I'd say you could rob me anytime except I never comply with demands from others - I'll go out swinging or shooting every time. That's not because I can't appreciate being the victim of a good 'ol straightforward robbery or mugging, it's because I'm not going to put myself in a position where I can get restrained only to be the victim of an execution or some sociopath's weird torture role play. Too bad more aren't like you. It's unfortunate that the vast majority of those who think they're "bandits" are actually just boring metagaming KOS losers who can't get past shooting at everything or griefing other players, playing the bully they couldn't be on the playground at school. Fully agree its many times harder to successfully hold someone up and then release them alive. Killing is the easy way out.

Hey all, Hoping someone can shed some quick light on what in my system is holding me back - I'm not extremely knowledgeable about hardware. Here's the problem: My frame rate will sometimes go down to almost nothing and the game will freeze or CTD. This happens any time I enter or go close to a large city, and rain in the game seems to make it much worse. Sometimes when running fast through the forest with good FPS, I will suddenly get a quick drop in FPS and almost freeze as well. In rural areas in game I generally get 60+ FPS at minimum. Here's what I have: CPU: Intel i5 4440 GPU: Radeon 7950 HD w/ boost 8 Gigs RAM Windows 7 32 bit old 500 GB HDD - don't even know what the RPM is. I'll also add that I've optimized all of my settings per the best rated Dayz optimization guides I've found. Had this problem before and after that, and significantly, my graphics settings, wether very high or very low seem to have no effect - pretty sure my GPU is not the problem. My thought is that the hard drive is actually my problem as I think I read somewhere that Rocket stated a SSD is the best way to boost performance with rendering and loading especially in towns. With a glance at my current setup above, do you agree, or could my CPU or another component also need upgrading? Thanks!

Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated all around - seems like the consensus is upgrade to 64 bit OS and maybe SSD after that. Didn't hear anyone say CPU or GPU might be limiting so that's good news. -
Fair enough mate. Certainly you understand then on some level in that you seem to see that the game has so much more to offer than being sniped from hundreds of meters out for a piece of clothing. What is disappointing is that so many players seem to want some level of more interesting interaction (whether helpful or banditry) but will give up and resort to taking the easy road and just kill when they have a sure drop on another guy if it suits them in that situation. You don't seem to be the mindless KOS'er type and it's definitely valid with your level of experience in the game to feel as you do about trying to be friendly and having your reward all too often be a burst of 5.56 to the face. It is of course valid to play how you like in this regard, just thought I'd counter your enthusiasm over the kill with a different point of view and point out its meta-consequences since you did make the post and all - not sure what you were expecting as it seems the first few to respond here reacted similarly to myself. Perhaps well-moderated private shard servers being released soon will help sort some of this out.

Keep walking around in the building and trying to go through different parts of the wall, try crouching, try going prone and crawling - I've had this happen several times and have always managed to get out eventually.

This exactly. I posted somewhere about an idea to divide some of the slots for each backpack, vest, or other container into smaller quadrants. So for example a 25 slot hunter backpack might have 5 additional slots (representing the smaller pouches on the pack) each divided into smaller quadrants of 4 which only fit certain small and light items, for example batteries, fishing hooks, paper, pen, maybe even some of the smaller medium sized things like rope, loose rounds up to a certain number, some of the small medical items like syringes, water purification tablets, etc. - basically anything that is both small and has negligible weight. This would be a more realistic way to carry a lot of small items that really take up negligible space and weight in real life, without having to sacrifice lots of "slot space" in an unrealistic way as we do now. The fact that a fishing hook or a pen takes up as much "space" in a backpack or pocket as a 1911 magazine right now is silly. But I think the Tetris system is reasonably realistic in that in reality in packing things into a bag or any other space you have to take into account both the size of the item and space it takes up, as well as what angle it might fit into the bag to make it fit as well as to make it accessible.

And as for your friend the pig, he is neatly packed in my hunter's backpack in the form of 6 nice little pork chops all ready to go. Have they added pineapples and the mechanic to dig an authentic cooking pit yet? -

Can we bring back some of the small gadgets slots?

I haven't played the mod, so I don't know how they did it there but here's an idea: What if each style of backpack had a certain number of "mini" slots in addition to the standard size slots? So a certain number of the square inventory slots could be divided into 4 quadrants, and only certain "small" items that IRL really take up negligible space and weight can fit in these small quadrants (for example, fishing hook, pen, map, etc.). Hypothetically, for example, say 2 of the existing slots on the hunting backpack, 5 on the mountain backpack, etc. could be either used like this, or treated as a single normal sized slot. Or alternatively, the "extra" mini quadrant slots could be added to the existing available slots on each backpack. The same could be done for other items like vests, cargo pants, etc. -

I love tents and the idea of being able to barricade and make a place your "home." I agree with OP in that I don't like the idea of players being able to return to their stash to gear up after death. I would keep tents and barricading eventually, but everything you've stored somehow disappears when you die so that you truly have to start all over. -

I hope you two can get along because you both seem to be great people and I hope you'll be playing together on the same server soon. :) There are some valid points on both sides of this debate, often where you land depends on your own experiences with the issue and how you've been affected personally. I'm sure being a police officer exposes a person to the scary underbelly of drug culture and drug use and it's affects - a side very few other people have to see in such frequent detail, and I can also agree that here in California the illegal growing is indeed both out of control and also pretty scary and incredibly profitable for the worst types of big growers - cartels and militants. I would think most police officers would agree that alcohol might be the more dangerous substance when it comes to violence, DWI, etc. (at least if we're talking about weed), certainly in terms of domestic violence and DUI deaths I would think. In the end, it's an unfortunate fact of the world we live in that highly addictive substances have a lot of other negatives attached to them. -

You are correct yet again. The "bend" on the bolt is literally just the handle part of it, which when "bent," is welded into a crimp so it is turned about 90 degrees downward to where it now bends down and points at the ground when the bolt is in closed firing position. The original standard Mosin bolt handle points outward directly to the side of the rifle's receiver when in closed firing position in contrast. When a bolt on a Mosin is operated, the shooter grabs it and cranks it about 90 degrees upward to release it, then pulls back on it to open the chamber and eject the spent shell, or to top feed the chamber / internal 5 round magazine either manually with single rounds or with a stripper. This means that there is about a 90 degree difference in the ending open position of the bolt handle, just like there is about a 90 degree difference in the starting closed position of a standard vs. bent bolt handle. So when the "bent bolt" is opened, it's bent handle goes from pointing down at the ground in closed position, to pointing out perpendicular to the side of the receiver in open position rather than sticking straight upward off the top of the rifle's receiver where it would be obstructed by the scope mount. A bent bolt effectively operates right beneath the scope mount (and stays slightly to the side in the case of a PU scope).
