Ha, thanks, I always keep a potato in my inventory once I find one because you just slap that thing in the ground, add a little water and you'll never starve again. They are remarkably good for energy.

There's basically food everywhere in Charnarus but it does require a bit of work to get. That is to say that with berries and apples*** starvation never needs to happen but foraging them is going to slow you down. Best bet is to forage to keep yourself alive (don't worry about getting energized/hydrated, just try and not be starving) until you find seeds/a potato and water*/shovel/hoeto plant and then garden yourself to happiness. If you find a firearm you can try to hunt, eating uncooked meat is generally fine - just don't eat the guts unless you have charcoal tabs. Finally there are metal wires in industrial areas/sheds around the map and that with a stick allows you to make rabbit snares** which (like gardening) are a great passive way to get food. The point of all this is: staying alive takes effort and especially early on so running off across the map to meet your friends simply can't be your top priority. Rather if they are more established they should be finding you and helping you out. A small amount of gear can make avoiding starvation dramatically easier and from that point you have much more freedom to do other things, your friends should be helping you with that. My own personal houserule is that I never eat food that I don't forage/hunt/grow, it's not difficult but it isn't free either. *If its raining, your crops grow without you watering them but sadly in this build there's no rain, so Chernarus is like Nevada. **Double bonus from rabbits, if you don't have a water bottle/canteen you can make a leather canteen with only one rabbit pelt if you have lime and a leather sewing kit. *** Berries for calories, use apples for hydration. Just a couple apples here and there will keep you hydrated but a berry bush addresses hunger much more effectively and better yet to no risk of cholera or food poisoning.

I think the official word is that LRS will not be mountable on the mosin without modification. That is to say, it may be possible through crafting to make an LRS mount eventually but a standard (unmodified) LRS will not fit on a standard mosin. This also seems like the most ideal situation.

I appreciate (though don't share) your optimism that having more than one (even one) magazine for a weapon will be a common occurrence in future builds. Still, the animations for drawing mags from the appropriate area would be cool, no doubt - and no doubt difficult to implement.

Probably next week according to the latest status report.

This all looks really nice. I really appreciate these status reports.

Loot splosions ruin a character for me. It's not long after finding one that I find a way to suicide or die creatively because I lose interest and feel tainted.

Any of you guys wonder what time period dayz is in.
ebrim replied to Azzerrrr's topic in General Discussion
What's funny is how much Chernarus reminds me of rural Maine. -
These really are fantastic, I look forward to the other cities, particularly in the north. Some of the new towns and cities are really impressive.

What's the fascination with having pristine clothes?
ebrim replied to HarryPotter (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I find it funny you guys are talking about damage mitigation. My main concern with damaged clothing is reduced thermal value. -
Oh man, can't wait to get my Lada.

Vehicle cargo is a planned feature. Also, is refilling a truck via bottle/canteen really practical? The volumes are of such different scale compared with fuel can.

Authenticity: Time Acceleration vs Night Lights
ebrim replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I love the accelerated time servers. Night is great and people who gamma exploit should be shamed at every opportunity. No to street lights unless you find a way to power them. It looks like electricity may one day be an option. -
Great work Tatanko!

I think that the plan eventually is to have the animals acting like animals, going towards water at certain times of the day and such. They will also wander a bit more. I think it's a great idea to expand animals spawns into extended parts of the map as well but I also imagine that the current spawns will be better utilized with the new AI.
-
Yeah, I'd prefer it if most plants spawned this way are rotten. Still, cool idea and it works well with the potato idea I posted some time ago where digging in greenhouses gives a chance to dig up a potato.

It's a shame for things to have gone back to easy-mode but I have faith all this has been very useful for the devs. Very much looking forward to 0.56, a return of the central economy and bows working!

Any info on the 24 hour cycle bug?
ebrim replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
The accelerated is so nice though. -
I'm not so sure about this. You can eat raw meat without getting food poisoning, yes, but I think there's still a chance to get it. You definitely get it with more frequency from eating the guts.
-
Look at it this way: one day you might come across a CR527 and just not really have the option of simply picking up another random gun of your choosing. Maybe you will discard it as soon as you find another, but with that in no way guaranteed - it doesn't really matter if you think it's the best or the worst - it's all you have.

I would certainly appreciate some way for DayZ to seek further funding through DLC. Lore is a great way to do this as would different character models and such (beards!).
-
I won't be satisfied with DayZ vehicles until I'm driving a Lada.

Towns should be FULL of junk loot and very few usable loot
ebrim replied to andrestor's topic in General Discussion
I agree with the original premise of this thread to a point. I don't really want to see anything be very common to the point of it not having value though. Part of the draw of the survival genre is managing an economy of time and resources. There is no economy of oxygen because for practical consideration there is no limit to oxygen. Similarly if you can find a shovel in every shed in Chernarus then shovels have no economy and very little value. -
I'm currently playing with house rules to eat nothing that I'm not taking from the environment - so just foraging, horticulture and hunting on a 1pp server with 24x accelerated day/night cycle. If I can manage that then I'm sure anyone can manage to survive under "normal" conditions if they're willing to adapt their strategy.

I'm not sure actually. It used to be the case that moving had one rate of metabolism and not moving had another (far less) but rate of movement didn't matter. If it has been proved otherwise, I haven't seen it. I tend to jog as a primary means of movement, I rarely sprint, just because I think this is a good habit. I'm not sure that it actually matters yet. A stamina system is in the works though, so if it doesn't matter yet, it soon will.
