    Tell us why we died

/thread Seriously, you're dead, give your next character the benefit of being just more cautious in general.

    More realistic food system

I was thinking a good and very basic nutrition system could look something like this: 3 pretty abstract "groups" to track: Protein (primarily from animal sources) Fat (more of a mixture from animal sources, some crops) Starch (primarily all from crops/foraged food) All food gives some amount of the three groups (that some amount could be zero). As one or more of the groups is drained from metabolic activity (similar to energy/hydration loss) or gained from diet you get various nutrition status effects with various effects upon gameplay and character performance. While simply trying to stay alive is the most obvious and primary goal of any survivor as you get more successful, gaining better nutrition stats will be a useful "end-game" goal for a character to achieve the best possible physical shape. While just running out of energy becomes unlikely at a certain point of progression, keeping a balanced diet could be a more enduring aspect of the game to keep track of that doesn't threaten death in the same way.

    More realistic food system

I definitely sympathize with the motivation. I just think that if hunger gets tied to how long or fast you are able to run, or how much weight you are able to carry (which I expect it will), people will start to care about hunger more than just as a way to stop themselves from dying without needing to rejigger the whole thing. I also think that some sort of nutritional system (like you mention above) could be really interesting. Eating just one source of food may be enough to keep you from dying but it could have other complications. Maybe in addition to your snared rabbits you have to pick some berries and eat some animal lard or maybe just eating pumpkins is good to keep you from dying but you will eventually need some protein to reach peak physical state.

How many zombies did you kill in that week with a fireaxe while sprinting from house to house with 20 kilos of equipment? :D

    More realistic food system

I like the thought you put into this but I'm just not sure the basic mechanics as they are need or want to be changed all that much. There are too many systems yet to be implemented to start reworking a system that is already in place without seeing how it will fit into a future set of conditions. Also the whole "it takes so so long to die from starvation" thing is a bit of a red herring. If you are an active normal person (not to mention the sprint all the time/vaulting over walls/super fast army crawl DayZ nonsense) you start to run out of energy and will just to do basic things within a couple days of having no food. Yes in certain situations you can not eat anything for weeks by just sitting still in a room where your only energy demands are basic metabolic functions but that has absolutely nothing to do with how characters behave in the game. Without a crazy amount of calories considering usual DayZ activities a person would be effectively useless without food in only a few days. Effectively useless in a game is as good as dead. Let's see how the current system works in tandem with a stamina system, with revisited damage system, etc.
  6. My guess is that most people assume English speaking Canadians are from the US and so the only time they're aware someone is from Canada is when they are Canadien. (Also about half my family is Québecois so a very polite f- you, to you, sir.)

    Whats the point of this?

Dear OP: You've done the same thing, multiple times and failed according to your account of it. Maybe try something else?
  8. I especially like that he shot you the first time. I imagine many KoS are just this.

This post is messed up Don't read.

If you're worried about the color of the press vest don't wear it. It's a trade-off, storage vs. visibility.
  10. I'd like to give the infected/zombies/whatever guns. Not all of them but at least some of them like in Stalker. The zombies in Stalker were just mind melted but retained some basic skills, I feel like DayZ zeds could be similar. Plus, people would take gun wielding zeds a bit more seriously. Brain scorched, infected, re-animated corpse, drugged up victim, they're all zombies to me.
  11. Unless I'm feeling really twitchy or startled or plain acting in self-defense I don't try to kill other players. Killing other players isn't nearly as fun as talking with them or messing with them or even just watching them. Aside from not dying there doesn't seem to be anything to gain from killing other players because then they're just dead and meh that's not fun. I fully intend to steal someone's boots someday, nothing else, just their boots. That day hasn't happened yet but it will and I'll make screenshots. I get that other people have different motivations though or just plain lack imagination and that's fine. I don't really mind dying, I happily suicide with every non-wipe patch anyway. Other people seem to really care about their gear and so I get the whole "ask questions later" approach even if I don't share it. I'd suggest finding your own way to make peace with it, OP, as I imagine this behavior isn't changing anytime soon.

    Incapacitation from extreme pain

There's no question that the shock value of some melee weapons needs to be increased a lot. You don't run away after getting smacked with a splitting axe.

    Incapacitation from extreme pain

Actually, this is why I think the current shock/blood system works fine and just needs to be expanded as I say above. A small round like 9mm or .38 won't have very high shock damage and you could probably if in good health before the shot still run away after taking a bullet, at least long enough to get cover and trying to bandage. But a 7.62x54 should deal huge amounts of shock, likely knocking you down or entirely unconscious with the first shot even if it doesn't not kill you outright. Assault rifle rounds would be somewhere in the middle, a healthy person may just be able to take a shot and keep going if it's a non-vital location while a sick or otherwise injured person will get dropped. Part of the work in the coming months is a new damage model, so we'll see what they do.

    Incapacitation from extreme pain

I'd avoid doing anything quite so radical I think. I agree with the overall premise that getting hurt should mean more though. I think a lot can be done with the current shock/blood system. As shock rises relative to blood players can be made slower, less steady, even fall over frequently, etc. Painkillers could help to speed up reduction of shock or morphine could do so far faster. Morphine as a way to repair limbs should probably go away now that we have splints but moving around with a broken or injured limb not in a splint should cause shock to rise - do so long enough and you'll just pass out.
  16. Why is that a bad thing? Come back in half a year and we'll be exhaustedly getting into our ladas to drive back to base after burning our stamina sprinting across a field running away from cholera-infected fresh spawns armed with improvised spears. :) It might be an ugly process getting there and nobody is forcing you to go through that save yourself the headache.

    Status Report - 27 May 15

There's a lot of cool stuff coming up and it only make sense that some things are going to break when so much more is being added so quickly. Fix as you go, keep working toward feature-complete status and then soften those rough edges. I can understand why it would be frustrating for some players but I'm actually really excited to see it as it goes.
  18. So I think this is true, there really are no blind corners or the like with 3pp camera as it exists now. That's not a reason to remove 3pp camera in my view but it is a reason to improve it. I don't want 1pp only but I do want the tactical awareness gap between 1pp and 3pp to be much smaller. 1pp and 3pp should compliment each other and not be diametrically different play experiences.
  19. ebrim

About the next coming camera angle

Let's actually see what the new 3pp camera is in action before we judge it too harshly. I'm reservedly optimistic. But maybe that's because I really want it to work so that we stop this endless back and forth.
  20. That's funny, my last favorite application of 3pp aside from "peeking" is driving. I vastly prefer driving in 1pp, it sounds better, feels better and I fully appreciate that not being able to see out the side window in 1pp is annoying. Plus 3pp driving camera gives way too much vision. Being in a vehicle by nature should limit perception.
  21. I'd feel like this was an unnecessary move but I would personally be fine. My position is to restrict 3pp so that 3pp people can enjoy the legit parts of 3pp: seeing their character, having peripheral awareness, etc. but be unable to do nonsense like look over walls. With this change I think we could stop the 1pp/3pp division and end this poisonous debate.
  22. ebrim

About the next coming camera angle

Or just eliminate the current nonsense 3pp and replace it with a more restricted view. Again, everyone wins in this scenario except people who exploit. When that is done we can bring 1pp and 3pp back together.

    Awaiting .57

    Clearly. :D
  24. ebrim

About the next coming camera angle

Sadly I was hoping an improved 3pp could end this silly debate finally. 3pp people get to see their character and have greater general awareness not captured in 1pp. Similarly 1pp people don't have to worry about silliness like looking over walls. Everyone wins except for people who rely on the most distasteful uses of current 3pp. The playerbase could be united again! Alas, that population which relies on current 3pp shenanigans has come to make their voices heard.
  25. ebrim

    Awaiting .57

Well that was a feeble attempt to amplify personal dissatisfaction by lumping together a bunch of generalizations and overblown assumptions. If you find you don't like early access just don't participate in it in the future, it really doesn't have to be more than that.
