Lol I'm the oposite of you OP, when I started in the mod I would kill anything that moves. Even my friend who was playing with me got his head blown up, not by accident lol. Nowadays I find more fun in trying to make contact with a person, you know the risk in the first 10 secs you meet someone with a gun and simply can't know what she/he will do to you? Its cool to talk your way through these situations, where the person has the drop on you. Yesterday I was a freshpawn in electro, turned arround a corner and there was a man with a shotgun pointed at my face. I though I was dead man, but we managed to talk and stablish a basic trust, so he let me live and we go on our ways. The tension it creates when you have a shotgun in your nose, the fact that you life can end by a simple click, its much better then KoS lol.. Its amazing how immersive it is, you really start to think on things to say that might save your ass! But in the past that was the thing I did the most, shot people in the face, not even for their loot, just for the thrill. Even better when they cryied at the global chat, that was my KoS fuel tbh. But hey, killing people is really fun too OP, I do recomend. Once in the mod I made 2 clans start a war, I sniped a member of clan X in balota airfield, the guy was a fresh respawn. He immediately blames the members of clan Y for this terrorist act, now the global chat is filled with swearings and death threats lol. Next 2 days it was a violent clan war, I never laughed that much in DayZ man, then I meet one guy from clan X, at start I was all friendly and helpfull but I couldn't hold it, I had to tell him that I was the one who killed the guy at balota and started the war. Man, they got so mad at me lol I was laughing my ass off man, they proceed to kill me, then I respawn, walk a bit and hear a humvee aproaching, killed again. They killed me like 8 times in a row man, best fun I ever had in this game so far. As for a hoarder, I never was. I don't have patience OP, wish I had so I could find some cool stuff but I don't.

Hey guys, well I believe this would help greatly to reduce the deathmatch factor of this game if it shift its focus to melee combat then ranged. Firearms impose little threat to the one wielding it against its victim, even more if said victim is unnarmed. The risk in ranged combat is way to low. Now if firearms become rare as fuck and the great majority of survivals start using melee weapons, the risk in killing someone is a lot bigger, one single hit you take can make your arm broken, or make you bleed etc and no longer simply having the drop on someone means you can easily kill the person. But to make this happen, we would need a more robust melee mechanics, adding parry/block, making the windup/release/recovery and range of each weapon something much more important and as consequence, melee fights will no longer be a straferun spamfest and will actually requires some strategy and skill, adding depth to the game and making melee fights something fun. I mean, the way I see it, this will only bring good things to the gameplay of DayZ AND will make it different from all the other survival games out there. I really don't know how viable this is due server/internet mumbojumbo, but imo would do a lot of good to this game. So, a good and complex melee system is a must imo, because is something that will change a lot how things play. What you think?- 101 replies

You already can 360YoLoSWAGSWAG-noscopeheadshot in DayZ with weapons that does a overhead animation thou. The "bad" thing about Chivalry's melee is already in, that is the tracer system, these """""exploits"""", in chivalry, are nothing more then a clever use of this mechanic (and you are a real noob if you disagree with this lol git gud). I agree with you that these extreme moves doesn't belong DayZ, what I think would be ideal for this game is that system made more realistic or less competitive. Well about parrying, change parry to block then. You use your melee weapon to avoid getting hit in the face, nothing Jedi here. You could dodge too, whatever. My point is we need some form of defensive move in melee so fightings are no longer spaming LMB, that is something very poor gameplay wise and really stupid realism wise. Feinting is in fact a very basic thing when fighting, if we got in a real life fight with baseball bats, you would naturaly feint me I'm very sure of it. But feinting only makes sense if there is some form of parry/block/dodge, so its used as an extra factor to avoid the fights becoming attack-block-attack-block, together with stamina AND it adds a HUGE skill celling, that is reading the feints with many kinds of weapons. -

It is exelent, the animations looks like the punching, but kill zeds in 2 (or 3 don't remember now) hits to th head, Aim with the animation and do not walk foward + strafe left/right when you click to attack because that breaks the animation. You dodge the zed attack, and then hit him, its a very good weapon if you respect the zed intiative and react accordingly. Go full caveman against the zeds! Think about it, stone knife is all you said + uses only 1 space in inventory + rekt zeds left and right + you find it everywhere. Best item ingame?

Never using outside of the game resources like map and TeamSpeak, I try to play exacly as I would try to survive in a real life situation, which means I moslty walk around, trying to be as stealthy as possible you know. Before all this I smoke a bit of weed and then BOOM I'm literaly in fucking Chernarus. Oh also I almost forgot, I avoid melee fights with other survivors aswell when I want to be immersed.

I played dayz mod and I agree with him. The way I see it, the only thing now that is endgame is loot, farming, base building and all this is "loot" if you think about it. I believe that adding soft skills like these makes the endgame more rich AND creates a bigger value in the life of your char. But yeah, if its not balanced it can generate unfair advantages. But its a balance matter i believe

I KoS when I panic, and boy I panic a lot. People comes out of the fucking nowhere in this game, I try to be as stealth as possible so that doesn't help too. If the survivor resist the first shot, then we talk and maybe I even help the person. If I have melee then I rather talk first you know, I find it a safer option

AHhahahhahahha you hoarder, when I have more then 2 guns its because I plan to give one to someone else or I'm waiting to find ammo, that kind of thing. I usually don't like big bags, I go just with the simple bag you craft with burlap and rope so I can't even hoard! -

What about wielding something as a shield so you can bash through zeds? Over the top too much? I think if it was made possible, you should not be able to shield + melee weapons, you just use the shield so its really easier to parry (maybe shields could have a holdable parry) and to bash through a few zeds! EDIT: GUYS GUYS, I had asked a dev about all this and look what we got AW YES strafe and spam will finaly rest in peperoni -

This is such a well made thread man, good job. The idea, imo, is a must for a game like this. Where the endgame can be having a pro shooter survival instead of loot. Gives players a lot more options on how to play. Maybe these softskills idea could be applied to melee! But not only combat, I believe we should have softskills a lot of things like foraging, cooking, medical skills and all that, so people who play in groups can especialise themselfs. I seriously can't see one single solid argument against the idea. I think that the more RPG elements we have, the better.

Worse part of realism in this game is on the melee combat. On PvP aspect you don't have initiative, this doesn't even exist in this game. You simply run around your opponent and spam lmb, while he does the same. Have you guys watched 2 survivors fighting in this game? Its cringe worthy, ridiculous. Totally breaks the immersion, imo it's something that requires A LOT, no seriously, a shitton of work to get even close to decent. Until then, I laugh at this game realism, you simply cant say this shit is realistic when melee fighting is worse then Counter Strike 1.6. -

How is multi directional attacks and the halibity to parry/dodge hollywodism maneuvers? Anyways, to keep it real then and not over the top, we gotta strafe and spam BUT with nice animations, thats realistic/good gameplay right. I believe you don't even know what a fun and good melee is, by your posts one can clearly see that you are clueless. You should try Chivalry. Do you think that melee now is authentic? -

There is a game that is going to be released maybe this year that focus on melee combat, just like Chivalry, and also has tracer based system and what not. In fact, it REALLY looks like Chivalry gameplay. Well, said game will have low, mid and high parry and you do them by looking up, down or straight. Its all done by the same mouse buton, but depending on where you are looking one or another parry animation will play. Its an awesome idea imo Its even kinda intuitive if you think about it, if someone ingame were to hit your legs, look down and parry! It plays just like the big parrybox, but open more oportunities to attack and raises the skill celling of parring. But we might then fall in the "DayZ survivor is not a pro fighter", and dodging I believe is far more intuitive then low, mid and high parry but idk, I like the idea anyways, seems like good gameplay. Simple huge parrybox + dodge would already be very, VERY good to this game Imo. -
You are most welcome my friend. Let me tell you something, if you don't mind top-down isometric 2d game I recommend you to take a look at Project Zomboid. Its all you discribed you want, and in my experience is a AMAZING game with a very solid gameplay, really complex and has multiplayer aswell. Take a look at it man, you might not regret it! Yeah a simple back/side dodge could be really awesome too and open many possibilities. The parry is a complicated subject, because for example, if they are to make it realistic, your "parrybox" should be the same size of your weapon. Problem is, this method leaves your legs totally vulnerable and that would result in dumb leg hit meta. So if the parrybox is made like this, we would need at least 3 parry animations, low, middle and high parry. Easier solution to all this but less realistic is what Chivalry did, you have a "huge" (from your face to your ankle and its as wide as your shoulders) parrybox in front of you that is activated when you parry, so you still can bypass your opponents parry using those attack manipulations technics (like a side-stab) and avoid inconsistencies and fucked up moments that would be caused by unparriable attacks aimed at your legs. Imo, the huge parrybox its not really bad, at least in Chivaly it plays kinda well. But I would totally prefer that the parry were made by the weapon model, so if you use a knife against a sledgehammer or a axeman, you would have to dodge and play smart because it would be a seriously risky trying to parry that thing! Also in DayZ I don't think it would be bad if you for example, parried a sledgehammer with a butter knife and you broke your wrist or got some kind of damage depending on how well (timing and direction wise) you parry it. Another solution maybe is the dodge, so if you see that your opponent is going for a leg hit (telegraphed by his torso moviment) you dodge the fuck out. -
Then you should delay buying DayZ and go for Project Zomboid, there you can smash as many windows and doors you want, and the windows does a really nice sound when smashed! We still don't have even the option to jump over windows, they are unbreackable and so are doors. Idk if this will change man, maybe doors will but windows... In DayZ everything that depends on the building interiors is kinda hard to conceive imo, because they are all disproportional. Thou it would be really cool if zeds could pass through windows or break them!

Great idea man, way better then making weapons rare indeed. As Whyhero said they are also used as melee so really, no point in making them rare. I like the "under fire" idea its like Red Orchestra right, where supressing fire actually means something! Its a great game too imo, exelent gameplay. What you think about the melee complexity? I mean, firearms are obviously gonna get nerfed either by rare ammo or ideas like yours, so melee is going to play a great role ingame. Would you also like to have a bit more complexity in melee? -

Its a great thing to create distance between you and your opponent AND take the initiative back when you lost it, could be some sort of bashing instead of kicking too. Makes me thing, for a complex melee we need flinch! Together with parry is one of the things that makes spaming useless and create strategy -
