    Stable Branch - 0.55 Discussion

Just thinking out loud here, having seen this sentiment too many times in this forum... With "early release" being the vogue thing in game development now I bet it would be a valuable resource for the industry to do a (sociological?) study on what are the factors that cause players to get "testing fatigue" and effectively rage-quit the testing process. I use the term "testing" loosely here because, let's be honest, the vast majority of us see ourselves more as players than in a testing role. I wonder if there is a more effective model for incentivising early adopters to stick with the process than just "you get to play it early on" and a slightly lower price - an incentive that has us stick with the process? I think if we were brought closer to the actual development cycle (not sure how, maybe just being more informed like insiders?) "testers" would feel more committed to playing the role of assisting the project rather than just playing. That said, I do feel as though the devs make an effort to keep us informed through multiple outlets (some here say not enough), but perhaps there is a more effective way that targets getting us to want to be part of a collective team that is goals-oriented.

I hardly feel it is necessary for you to explain the development process to those who choose to see it in their own vision. Kinda makes me mad that devs should have to defend their process at all, even if it is just clearing up misconceptions. You are gracious for taking the time.

Gotta say, other than a few servers with coastal spawns that have nothing, food has been harder to find but not a deal breaker. And I don't even search trees or bushes. The other day we had 4 people start fresh on a private server (just to bone up on our new-spawn skills) that spawned between rifty and svet and we all survived (together) to be moderately geared up. I think you should give the game another chance by trying to rethink your strategies. There are simply too many people who do survive and even thrive to write off the game as unplayable.

    1. With a brittle sharp tip that breaks on the first hit on even a slight angle? Or do you prefer a blunt tip that just dents at best with simple arm strength? The amount of force and structural integrity required is not supported by a simple flaked stone blade and you would probably slice or severely bruise your hand in the process. 2. Prying will break the blade so I guess you mean ream open a puncture some more - that's reasonable 3. This I totally disagree with you on. A smallish hole in the can top would allow you to control what comes out, so at worst 70 or 80 percent would be saved. of course, bacon would be frustratingly stuck in the can How would I do it? A sharp stone point with a wide angle is most functional when perforating through hard materials, so the clear best solution would be to use indirect percussion. Put the can on the ground and support it firmly side to side with your feet as you sit, or set it up against a solid object. Flake the bit end of a thick, wedge-shaped stone to give it a sharp point of an angle no less than 45 degrees. The more surface area at the start will require more force, so keep it pointed if possible Set up the wedge so it is perpendicular to the can's top with the tip pointing down - preferably along the edge Strike the top of the wedge stone with something with much mass like a dense log or another fist-sized stone. Force must be fully transferred into the ground by the can's bottom and not lost by side-to-side slipping motion Once it punctures through set up again right next to that hole and repeat step 3 until you have at least 2/3 of the lid free Peel back the lid and serve up the yummy morsels, basking in the self satisfaction that you have outsmarted most of the average out there in the ZA. Those fools have a single stone knife that keeps breaking on cans and cuts their hands in the process while you implemented a more intelligent 2-piece system that is reusable.Seriously though I don't really expect anyone here to care about stone knives or flint knapping as much as I do, but for the sake of being in the position to defend, it's simply not feasible to do this with just a small stone knife. I'll let it go now. I've made you all suffer enough ;)

    Clear History Option

This is not just a great idea but really should have been built into the game from the start. If you are going to make the history list useless (i.e. you don't say WHEN I joined the server - kinda basic for a history list, right?) then at least give us an easy way to clear it. For those who think this is a bad idea, can you come up with a compelling argument that we should not be able to clear our history?

That doesn't help my understanding why they are (still) nerfed. Why add things that are designed as deadly weapons but do the same damage as things that were not, like brooms and hockey sticks (though a babushka could wield a broom like a ninja most likely, and most Ukrainian/Chernarussian youth could probably hunt deer with hockey sticks by the time they reach puberty)

Why, oh why are the sword and mace nerfed?!? They are somewhat rare after all, right? My friends and I found one of each last night and tried them out. Jesus, just about got those guys killed trying to take down a single zed each. I counted at least 10 body hits with the mace before it went down. The sword did slightly better. I'm not saying they should be one-hitters but its somewhat of an insult to the classification of weapon IMO. Since I'm on the subject of swords... I think it would be awesome to have a Highlander mini-game where whenever a player meets another player they have to sword fight, continuing until one player is left, because... well... there can be only one! Probably make for a good modded game after full release.

I'd like someone to explain to me how you would open an aluminum can with just a stone knife IRL. Is this a feature in DayZ? I've never bothered to try, Stone knives are brittle and dull very quickly against hard materials. They are optimal for slicing or sawing soft to medium-hard materials like flesh, hide, plants, sticks or bone.
  9. Interesting experience last night that was unusual - could have been KOS but wasn't. Was server hopping with a group just outside the NWAF tent city and got in first. After a brief pause I went in at the north entrance with my SKS in hand and was walking around a tank with TAB, so screen was filled with stuff. Someone brushed by me casually so I figured it was one of my buddies. Nope. I turn to see and some guy in a full ghillie suit is walking away from me toward the bunker, no weapon in hand I could see. He turned around after a few seconds and looked in my direction.so I waved. He just turned around and kept looking for loot in the bunker, treating me like I was a deer walking near him or something. I was so confused. I took off and told the other guys to back off and we all let him have the tent city to himself. In the back of my mind I guess I thought there must be a few other ones nearby ready to pick me off if I so much as raised my gun. After all, those wookies are terribly hard to see and my game was apparently not on that night.

All of these preceded .053 and I confirm that all are annoying. Playing around the bugs sometimes feels like tiptoeing around an alcoholic dad (not that I had to, but know those who did). With the character loss issue its always tempting to think you might have accidentaly chosen a private server. Especially where you suddenly got it back after a few hours. That said, a buddy last night thought he lost his stuff and then got it back after playing minutes as a freshie then logging into another server. Of course we all assumed he was on a private server but he confirmed he wasn't.
  11. You know what you need? Get on a low pop, find a truck and drive around the countryside recklessly for a few hours. Great fun and it takes your mind off Chernarus troubles. :) It's a popular thread because its a hot button topic. Your allowed to rant a bit.
  12. Disclosure: just last night I got killed in the Vybor MB by an a-hole exploiting the prison floor glitch. My favorite part of the game is being a fresh spawn so I really didn't care much, but I find hackers and glitchers who put themselves in the position of killing without the possibility of being killed to be complete and utter losers who don't even deserve the love of their own mothers. That said, this game is augmented by KOSers even if they are very frustrating at times. Have to agree with you man. It's a tough truth but truth nonetheless. When I describe this game to non-players I say "If you're looking for a game that makes your chest thump this is for you." The best part is you get lulled into lazy habits by the exorbitant amount of non-action play, so tense moments go off the scale. Lol - Morgan Freeman inspiring youth in ways he never realized. I agree with you fully. I don't have any problem with your actions in that story - you employed a strategy and caught people in a trap by preying on their predictable, emotion-driven actions. Any of those "heroes" could have tried to clear the area before helping. Their choice to throw caution to the wind. One request though: can you stop graying out your text... it tough on my aging eyes :/
  13. This game is rife with cowardly acts. If one were to make a sociological study out of the player population as a whole the conclusion would be a dead obvious truism: when a population is suddenly put on a level playing field (i.e. resources, status, physical capabilities) human interaction will settle into a pattern of those "wishing to have more" maliciously preying upon those who haven't discovered the the will or desire to want more. Human nature is, I believe, inherently enthropic (tending toward disorder and imbalance). Also, in a way the term coward becomes irrelevant because it is defined by its opposite, heroism... and when everyone is forced into equal opportunity the need for heroism is lost. The place for heroism in the game only returns when the cowardly, selfish KOSers make life for the others unbearable. But since any fresh spawn is easily capable of getting the same guns, gear, etc. as the KOSers there is no systemic class of "downtrodden" for the wannabe hero to save.

You're right regarding base building, though I was remarking on the current state of things. I keep reflecting on the current state of things where I plop a fire down in the safest spot close to where I'm currently at in my nomadistic (is that a word?) journeys. In that scenario the oven is overkill in a RL sense. I suppose I should broaden my horizon to longer term development trends because you make good points. Oh dear, well that explains a lot. I thought it was 8 "stones" (which take up 4 slots and are not stackable), not 8 "small stones". Crap! I'll have to try it now. In my defense though - I would have never guessed you could make an enclosed fireplace with what any given hobbit keeps in his pocket for target practice. I promise I'll read the wiki better next time.

Completely agree with you regarding a sharpened stick for cooking steak one at a time. No - getting 8 stones seems like a really annoying task so I haven't bothered... and talk about "not authentic" for a survival scenario. Building a fully enclosed pizza oven would be quite low on my list of effective strategies for establishing an ephemeral campsite. Odd game design choice IMO.

Not sure how you got *cough* worn meat *cough* but you can't place meat directly into a fire anymore or else they become quickly ruined. You need to use a cooking pot on a tripod.

Not bodies, but multiple packs that people have dropped (possibly during death) that disallowed me from pulling anything out of them.

Had two incidents with the trucks last night. Nearly flipped over after taking a corner at middle speed... couldn't see what caused it but the vehicle righted itself after some quick silent prayers ;) Also was moving slowly uphill on the road closest east to the NEAF -- somewhere about where it crosses 126 029 and came to a sudden dead stop that jolted the vehicle... apparently some kind of invisible barrier. I backed up and went around. Fortunately I was going slowly, but then speed was removed as a factor since going uphill without any momentum is currently slower than a guy crawling with broken legs. Really wish that would get looked at some day.

Defintely saw this. Distance was about 30ft/10m. Both of us saw this happen at the same time to each other, so it is consistent.

As someone who makes improvised knives from stones IRL it is more complex than you think. Try making a sharp edge out of crumbly granite or platey shale. So spending a little time looking for the *right* kind of stone (material, size, shape) is appropriate... and you should fail sometimes, especially if you are not experienced at this sort of stuff.

Well, I guess I have my answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWAw7Cf572U WOBO confirms through testing (though not actually shown in the video) that non-Prion players on a server can hear the laughing/crying sounds merely by having a player on the server who is suffering from Prion. He calls it a bug (rightly so) but details are lacking. For instance, does the sound-affected player hear it because s/he is in certain proximity to the Prion player or is the sound-affected player randomly chosen? I ask because of the 3 of us my buddy is the only one who heard it... until we got close to him. Since there was only one other player on the server apparently he MUST have tasted the forbidden flesh. From my 1st hand experience it appeared that the sounds were coming from my buddy's player as if it has "attached" to him. EDIT: Forgot to say that he/we still heard the sounds even after the other player left the server. Thus, why I use the term "attached". And for those who don't feel like watching you should ook for the player twitching as a positive ID of a cannibal. Curious what others think, but I would consider KOS for a cannibal based upon some in-game sense of him being an "abomination" of humanity. If nothing else it gives a valid reason to KOS for those who would not normally do so. My personal rule would be to make an effort to tell the player why he must die - kind of a role playing thing - but I suppose killas gonna kill if they want, lol.
