Regarding Northwestern Chernarus
LeeVanSpliff replied to tullyburnalot's topic in General Discussion
Gotta agree that the city-mass has increased rather drastically since the mod. I hope they're not adding any more major cities - don't really think we need large cities now that we have the distributed police stations (which are great for the map imo) and the options for hunting and fishing and other activities not involving looking for a can of beans in a house. -

Finding north if you don't have the sun at your disposal: http://dayz.gamepedia.com/How_to_find_North Anyhow, like people state, just keep going south-east. -
Very strange night. Anyone else experienced this?

People seem awfully certain that this is a bug, while it's obviously a case of alien abduction. The time loss, displacement, the missing memories of your ordeal and the fact that you were healthy and fed all point to visitors from outer space. -

In a survival game with severely limited resources, WTF...
LeeVanSpliff replied to tootights (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Googled it. Some pictures showed up. ... I can sort of see how that would work. -
Oh yeah I can see how that can be a problem. I prefer the SKS and the Magnum, and if I do have a clip/speedloader for those I have them in my inventory, so worst case I lose some rounds. I think people use the whole f-key differently. Friends of mine have the problem, but in the last 50 hours I've played (took a longer break, that's how I know) I only did it once. What I do is press F, and if the door remains closed I start scrolling the mouse wheel - it appears to only happen when I hit F twice in a row. Won't really solve the problem but might alleviate it a bit.
-
What happened was probably that the server reset without you getting to log out. Then it won't have given the latest info to the database that has information about your inventory. When you log back into another server (or the same server for that matter), the database will take the newest info it has - in this case, the info might have been stored while the ammo box was on the ground. Anyway, that's a possible explanation - and one of the few ways I seem to lose items myself.

I only Call of Cthulhu once and had no room for it. Still pains me! Oh and on the atheists in foxholes:

I sometimes keep a pen on me to write on notes on the floor. Not the most mature stuff, but along the lines of [someone appears to have used this note for toilet paper. You better go wash your hands]. Never saw one with text on it though, checked quite a few.

the new girls/robots/crackheads in town

Hmm, I think the models are pretty cool, albeit rather rough around the edges. My guess is that the hair is a placeholder? Otherwise this game has more short-haired women than most fantasy games have long haired men. In computer games men can sway from the pretty norm (think Bill or Coach in L4D 1/2) but women cannot for some reason. I consider non-pretty characters (male and female) a refreshing change. Sir, you have them! I'm certain hemp fields will be implemented sooner or later. .... Really? The stuff people can start whining about is almost agonizing. But not as agonizing as the method. It's the EXPERIMENTAL part of an ALPHA. -
Should admins have more options at hand?

Same reason every other game doesn't make hacking almost impossible - its damn hard! It'll be a long iterative process imo. I'd guess that they're gathering data now, and at some point the big ban-hammer will fall and we'll have relative peace till the next type of hack shows up or the hacker community loses interest. -
EXP - Map now shows the players exact position
LeeVanSpliff replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Yeah in-game map. And yes, you have to find it! Actually, in this game you have to put it together from map pieces. Good collector-project if you're bored. -
And yet a n00b with a mosin can end it all in an instant! Personally I prefer high pop servers. More chance of running into someone and you can't really gear your way out of an ass-whoppin in this game. You can increase your chances, sure, but if a couple of guys with rifles and ill intent spot you on long range it won't matter much. Of course that means that I die more often. Also a personal preference, but I don't think you can ever have enough ammo for your main gun. I remember this time where I thought I'd NEVER use the 60+ SKS rounds I had on me, but then we ran into three guy, had a really cool long gunfight and in the end I left with all grey vision and like five shots in the gun. Granted, that was before you could sort out good ammo from a ruined stack.

EXP - Map now shows the players exact position

Also, I discovered another amazing feature of the steam browser yesterday. I had gotten lost while playing on a night server a few days back, so I was crossing half the map to hook up with some friends. Suddenly, while sneaking past the airfield, I hear a voice talking to me - not English, possibly German or Dutch. I yell at my friends to shut up on team speak. Another voice starts talking, this time a woman's. At least two people. I'm outnumber, spotted, exposed and very likely outgunned since I've only got my Blaze95. Sounds like a conversation. I poop myself as quietly as I can manage, then say "hello?". No answer. Keeping my head down I start moving to get out of the way as quickly as I can. Conversation continues. Another voice joins in. I've moved a good distance - should be out of voice range, but the voices continue. And the voices are in ... Danish? How the hell did I just walk into a three person conversation in my native Danish on a German server? And they're talking about ... opportunities? Sounds like fucking advertisement! I shift-tab out and see the last few seconds of an advertisement for a university fade in the steam browser. I change my pants and continue north. -
Friend of mine had a similar problem. The 100% interface thing (seems to solve this for most people) didn't help him - possibly because his game was set to the wrong resolution. He couldn't work the drop down menu to change resolution with keyboard (or .... at least we couldn't figure out how). No idea if your problems are resolution related, but the symptoms appear to be the same. We fixed it by going into Documents\DayZ and opening the DayZ.cfg file. Then we changed the values for resolution width and height to match his windows desktop resolution - along these lines: Resolution_W=1920; Resolution_H=1080; Fixed it for him. Remember to back up your DayZ.cfg if you intend to mess around with it though.

It also fires a damn lot slower. I prefer the SKS to the Mosin.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.....

Two observations. That's nowhere near enough to do proper statistics. You'll need at least 10 where it explodes and 10 where it does not. Now get back to work! -
It started out as a really sad story, but then someone died in pain.

Well, it's not that I don't see what you mean. I guess my point was that even though it's only like ten-twenty lines of text, it has to be damn accurate and well-phrased or all of us impatient people would go "but you worked on that silly-bug for three weeks now" or "that feature was in the works 3 months ago". I'm feeling pretty damn impatient myself tbh, because I'm looking forward to have more features to play around with. I also want more info on what's happening but I think my rationale was something along the lines of: "even if it requires comparatively little effort, I'd rather have that effort thrown at the features I'm looking forward to". What I WOULD like, in terms of information is a info-posted-in-exactly-one-place policy. No more merging reddit rumors with twitter info and forum posts to get an overall Franken-image of what's going on. Unfortunately it seems that insidedayz.de stopped updating, otherwise those nice fellas were handling all that for us :)

Well, if you ever watched one of ye olde zombie movies, you'll also notice how a zombie can poke its hands into someone's gut and pull out intestines in just a few seconds. So yeah, I guess the rider's jacket should be possible to damage too. Besides, it already has the advantage of looking damn cool, I don't think it should be superior to other items on top of that.

I have never, ever been on any form of internet forum that didn't at least from time to time turn into a flame-fest (well ... maybe subsim, but that's only 'cause it's full of senior citizens and navy veterans ...). Some people just wanna fight on forums imo. Reason and information won't go far in appeasing them, and I don't think more information from Bohemia will do much. Dunno man. That would be eight updates per release to stable, I don't really think that's time well invested. Game development is difficult. Lots of cooks working on cooking the same dish. I'm a programmer myself, and I for one am happy that I don't have to give written, verified, understandable reports of what I'm doing eight times for each one release we do. I'm pretty sure the person who normally writes our patch notes is also happy that she won't have to compile long lists of garbled coder-written commit comments into something reasonable more often than now. I guess Bohemia is focusing on developing and taking info in (bug reports, suggestions, feedback) these days - rather than focusing on delivering info to us. I think that focus is right - they can start feeding people info once the game is actually published. Better use of their time.

Yeah HC seems a bit less hostile. Still the risk of a getting a few bullet holes, but less of a HELLO-BLAM attitude. Sounds like good times indeed. -
I believe you can also use them to gut animals, but I only tried it with a kitchen knife and machete yet.
-
Lol. Goats, pigs and chickens are waaay more interesting for me than a new gun. I mean, goats man! They're awesome.

That, exactly! A friend lost a completely legitimate M4 not long ago. Guess whomever got it could easily still run around with it.
