make all server favourite pro tip
LeeVanSpliff replied to Shrub Rocketeer ™'s topic in New Player Discussion
Apparently under view -> servers. Can't filter for DayZ in the game dropdown for some reason, but in stead just filtered for the map. Seems to work fine. -
Nice! Now don't get shot through the compass!

Okay, yesterday me and my friend were running around in Novo. Inside the hospital stairwell, we turn a corner and run into a player. Normally we'd try and engage him in some form of conversation, but my friend was apparently about as calm as a chihuahua after the tenth espresso so he immediately fired a round. Obviously all hell broke lose and reigned for the next few seconds. Random-guy fires back, I break a leg and get knocked unconscious, but not before I managed to land some shots on him. He gets away, presumably wounded and with a lot of bullet holes in his inventory. I'm conscious rather quickly (before my friend is done bandaging me) and I'm kinda looking forward to having to make it out of Novo with a broken leg, ruined pants and only a few rounds of ammo (DayZ peaks when you're screwed imo). Anyhow, I don't get to enjoy my fail, because then the "no messages received" text shows up. After reconnect, our characters were set back to before our hospital encounter. It seemed a little suspicious that it happened JUST after our gunfight - and it wasn't a scheduled server reset because we had just had one of those. The guy didn't appear that impressively geared. He wasn't down either but he would probably have been bleeding and the gunfire might have ruined his bandages/rags. Not accusing anyone, might very well have been a random crash or isp problem. However, I've got a few questions that some of you wise people might be able to shed some light on: -Would people actually reset their own server over what looked like a mediocre set of gear? Seems very bad for server population. -How long would it take from the time an admin deciding to reset the server to me seeing the "no messages" text? Must be a time-out of sorts involved... -How often is character data transferred from a server to the db? -Is it done by character or bulk changes for everyone on the server? Edit: failglish.

If you go to find out, bring a bible.

Dayz helicopter crash sites not spawning in stable?

Gods ... have some beans for your effort, Sir! -
No, he's probably not hosting it to make me happy. How does that make it okay for him to restart his server to protect his character? If he did indeed restart the server to save his character, it obviously violates the permadeath premise of the game. And ruins it for all the people who're not even nearby but get kicked for no reason. Which is probably also why it's stated as one of the very few examples of unacceptable behavior from server admins. This is a pay to play game, not a cheesy pay to win game. Whether he donates money to the UNICEF or a server doesn't really make a difference imo.

Not really, no, this is from the server rules:

So placing the Bible in my Press Vest did this..

I agree wholeheartedly, the crafting and hunting makes the game fun again. And no, I haven't seen an ashwood tree either. Must be damn rare! I usually come upon the pick in buildings like these: But you know, sometimes you only get fire extinguishers ....

Three things that completely ruin the DayZ experience...
LeeVanSpliff replied to Daricles's topic in New Player Discussion
What's with KoS being bad per default? I rarely KoS, but the risk of people who KoS is a part of the fun for me. I like feeling paranoid. I like fleeing through woods while bullets are flying. In my experience, a lot of people prefer interaction to gunfights. Of the last four pvp encounters I've been in, one was one of the trigger-happy misunderstandings that occur when people with raised guns run into each other, two were people who got robbed and later came back to try to take revenge and only one was a KoS kind of situation where my friend caught a mosin round from somewhere. -
The shitbaggery is mind numbing! Nice, that would indeed solve the problem. Oh I read that poll as "should scheduled server restarts have warnings". I'd still have voted yes though, it's a fine idea.

Signs to tell if someone is hostile
LeeVanSpliff replied to natelawrence's topic in New Player Discussion
I use haruspicy to scientifically determine if people are hostile or not. Expensive in chickens, but very reliable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruspex "if the liver's clear, no need to fear". -
Absolutely! Having great gear is much less fun than finding great gear. And finding great gear is way more fun when you're paranoid and constantly scanning that treeline and nearly have a heart attack when someone fires a mosin outside the building you're looting. Only reason I ever join a low pop server is if I wanna play around at night (hard to find populated night servers). Dying sucks the first few times, but in the end it'll just add more fun to your game. I wouldn't expect people on high-pop servers to be friendlier - high pop servers also attract the people who just want a good shootout. People on low pop servers might be the type that don't want to lose their gear, so that might make them a bit more nervous and trigger happy though.

Poll - Why aren't people playing hardcore mode
LeeVanSpliff replied to TimF's topic in General Discussion
Hell, I'm high and I still can't follow the logic in most of these posts. Are you saying I'm not getting good shit? -
Oh lol. And here I've been feeling all dangerous while clearing houses with a sawn-off.
-
I guess the right order of business would be first adding all the features that create server load, then optimizing to make the game runs well again, then adding more players, then optimizing to make sure the game runs well again.
-
Indeed. Actually, green mountains are prime habitat for bigfoot. Which explains why he's always so damn well geared whenever I run into him.
-
Bigfoot in DayZ is a myth, not unlike the wild boar.

I spent a while converting people to The True Faith at gunpoint. Imo that makes me a 'socializer'.

Heh nice, I love being lost in dayz. Well ... not being lost, but that you can get lost. Anyhow: There's coast to the south and east. If you go south-east, you'll find coast and civilization (and trigger happy people ... but that's a different sort of problem). Use sun position or this stuff http://dayz.gamepedia.com/How_to_find_North to find north, then travel to south-east. You'll run into roads or power lines sooner or later. They mostly lead to settlements too.

Poll - Why aren't people playing hardcore mode
LeeVanSpliff replied to TimF's topic in General Discussion
Nah. As late as yesterday I spotted this angry kid approaching with an raised mosin. I was close to a fence, so my 3p cam went out to where I could see him. He was far from the fence, so his 3p cam couldn't go into a position where I could be seen. -
Are the "casual" players THAT dumb?
LeeVanSpliff replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Casual players. The scourge of demanding gaming.
