Winchester or Lee Enfield? [POLL]
StoneColdSteve replied to Dawn (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
how is this even a question? enfield all the way. unless you are one of those people who can't figure out that you use a pistol for zombies... (edit) lol u shot that one guy like 4 times. with the enfield that is just mutilating the corpse. -
they see too well and hear too poorly. the hearing part is supposed to be fixed in next patch so at least that's something.

Arma update nerfed revolver?
StoneColdSteve replied to daze23's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
well i was just about to post that it wasn't the zombies, it had to be the guns as it just took me 2 revolver shots to kill a boar, but if this is the case then it might be the zombies, idk. -
Your rules for shoot on sight
StoneColdSteve replied to Pappyjump's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
kill everyone i see. that unarmed guy approaching me? yeah, hes gonna find an enfield in about 5 minutes and put a bullet in my dome if i don't make him respawn somewhere far away. hatchet? please. i've killed lots of people with hatchets. i KNOW how deadly they can be. the only exceptions are if its some new spawn who is running along the coast or something traveling in the opposite direction that i am. i figure that we will be far apart by the time he gets dangerous. if i'm not sure i can get the kill quickly or it is going to put me in a dangerous situation i might just vamoose, as i don't want to botch it and alert him and possibly his friends to my presence. generally, if i can kill someone i will. it's safer and more satisfying. -
Vehicles... Are there even any?
StoneColdSteve replied to Bairhanz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
you also have to realize that people like to collect them and hide them. every now and then you will run across a stash of vehicles and tents that some clan has set up. loot city!! -
Whats the point of getting a M16/M4A1/AKS-7U etc?
StoneColdSteve replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
well, aside from pure sniper rifles i'll take an m14 over anything else in the game, but the m4/m16 variants and the ak-74 variants have a number of advantages. they are quieter. yeah, i'm usually using my pistol for zeds anyway, but in the occasional instance where i am not, they are less likely to bring down a horde upon you. also, other players wont hear you QUITE so far away (though still pretty far.) the m4 cco variants have a front grip that seems to noticeably reduce recoil. you can pump out a lot of lead into a target pretty quickly in semiauto mode with good accuracy and not worry about having to readjust your sight picture so much after a shot. yeah, each bullet does less damage but you can get a lot more hits. the 74u is shorter. that means you get hung up less often in doorways, etc. it's a terrific close quarters/indoor gun. the 74 kobra has that nifty kobra sight on it. full auto fire is a real plus in close combat. the enfield is great, i LOVE the enfield, but if we meet in a stairwell in a control tower you BETTER hit that first shot, because the guy with the full auto assault rifle is going to be spraying you with bullets and you will be dead before your second. each gun has its advantages and disadvantages. nobody is making you use a gun you don't like, use whatever fits your playstyle. -
so i'm moseying up to a deer stand, and BOOM!! gunshot really nearby, like right on top of me. made my heart skip a beat. sounded like an m14 or DMR. i break into a sprint immediately running through the tree that is less than a meter away to my right, then break left through another tree. i continue evasion tactics, sprinting, zig-zagging through cover, waiting for the follow-up shots. i begin to think about what just happened, that guy was SOOOO close, how did he miss me? i didn't see him at all, because i went into super-jackrabbit mode immediately rather than turn around and look and get a bullet to the face for my trouble. maybe he didn't see me till the last second either and just fired off a panic shot? in any case my pulse was racing and i felt lucky to escape such a deadly situation. i've moved far enough now through enough cover that i'm pretty sure i've made a clean break. i begin to consider whether i should circle around and try to find this guy and get the drop on him. there are a few other deer stands in the area, and he might be looking to clear them out. if so, i can probably get him. i mentally calculate where i would be if i was him, how long he was likely to have stayed at the first deer stand after missing me, the next-nearest deer stand, and the one after that. i start to move through the forest, carefully watching, pulling up the scope on my own DMR to scout ahead, when i notice... DMR ammo 19. /facepalm. so embarassing. nearly gave myself a heart attack.

bandits , survivors, and other. which are you and what is your play style for PVP
StoneColdSteve replied to picky (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i call bullshit. i pretty much KOS everyone in this game, as players are the only real challenge in dayz. irl, though, i'm a really chill guy (even though i look like steve austin.) i promise i have never shot anyone, and if i did it would be some kind of crazy life-or-death situation, not so i can rob them of their backpack. if you drop your beer on my shoes in a bar i'm far more likely to buy you another one than punch you in the face. dayz is a GAME. nobody actually gets hurt. saying that the way a person enjoys an online computer game has anything to do with the way they act irl is just silly. edit: added underline to the quote, the bold didn't stand out well enough -

the big $$$ bohemia has made from arma 2 CO in the past few months is about a bazillion times more noticable and important to them than this thread. it's like they found a found a fountain that sprays money and you want to send them a postcard telling them how cool money fountains are. but hey, i'll /sign anyway. -

Hernold the Axe Murderer
StoneColdSteve replied to Dead on Arrival's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
people underestimate the axe way too much. i have lots of axe kills. yesterday i lost a dmr, m1911, coyote pack, and gps plus assorted other goodies to a hacker mass teleport/kill. upon my respawn i found a hatchet and started toward cherno (spawned between cherno and elektro) i was in a barn on the way when someone starts taunting me over direct chat, telling me i better watch out, etc. well, i exited into an adjacent building (the big shed kinda one that you see near barns) then left the other side and looped around in time to see a guy going into the building i had just left. i ran up behind him and planted that axe in his skull. he had a dmr, revolver, coyote pack, and various other stuff, and now i am re-geared like i was before (minus my gps) that fool thought that just because he had guns and i didn't, that it would be a good idea to derp around in amongst buildings looking for a guy with an axe. i guess he learned better. -
been teleported and killed, had people teleport on top of me, seen choppers flying around, been shot through walls. my buddy got shot through 2 walls (he was in the next room) it's been getting worse lately.

Underestimation of Lee Enfield
StoneColdSteve replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
man, idk, i've killed people with 1 torso shot with the enfield before. if they don't die immediately they will usually go unconscious and bleed out. perhaps my 1shots were on people with less than 100% full blood, but it really never takes more than 2. sometimes i'll shoot people a 3rd time, but i'm pretty sure i'm just mutilating the corpse at that point. -
Underestimation of Lee Enfield
StoneColdSteve replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
enfield is a terrific gun. it has AMAZING power, better than any other gun short of a 50 cal. it has good range, and good accuracy. an all-around quality battle rifle. the only downside is the slow rate of fire. it is also for PLAYERS ONLY. if you shoot zeds with it you will just bring more to you, and by the time you kill all of the ones that run to you more will have spawned, until you run out of ammo. overall, though, i agree. one of the two most underestimated weapons in the game. (the other being the hatchet) -
Another silly topic; Why'd you shoot me, man?
StoneColdSteve replied to Inception.'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
when you say "don't shoot i'm friendly" i generally will simply consider you a more sophisticated bandit who attempts to use psychological warfare to get me to let my guard down so that you can fill my face full of bullets with less risk. -
Being unarmed is the only thing stopping you people.
StoneColdSteve replied to Inception.'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
you had a hatchet. you were NOT unarmed. i just killed a guy with a hatchet. chopped his face in. he had a dmr, revolver, coyote backpack, and assorted other goodies. really kitted out minus gps/nvg/etc. now i have all that stuff. he tried to stalk me in a cow pen (one of those long buildings) but he did not realize i had exited and circled around behind him. i sprinted up behind him as he crouch-ran in the building and 2-shot him. he got 1 desperation shot off and missed. i bet he's kicking himself for losing all that stuff to a new spawn who literally had only a hatchet. he could have sniped me easy if he had stayed back a bit and just waited for me to leave the little building cluster. he could have just avoided me easily. nope, he came down into the buildings with his revolver out to kill a fresh spawn and paid for it. the moral of the story is that a hatchet is a DEADLY WEAPON. i have killed plenty of people with just a hatchet. you know how zombies run sideways and zig-zag as they come at you so they are harder to hit? do the same thing with the hatchet. when you get close keep strafing around between swings. you will be amazed at how bad some people are at hitting a moving target. i DO NOT take a hatchet-wielder lightly. if they stay at a reasonable distance, i might not kill them, but if they try to close the gap at all im gonna unload on them. the best part about this story is that i had just lost a dmr, coyote, and a bunch of other stuff to a hacker that transported the entire server into some water and then killed us in retaliation for me murdering him and his friends in elektro. (yea i killed him too, he teleported to me but i happened to be backing up at the time, so he showed up with his back to me, i pumped half a clip of dmr into him and he went down but just unconscious. it took 2 full clips of 1911 directly to the head before he finally died. he had the coyote and i got a gps off of him too!) now i have basically the same gear as i did before, minus the gps, because some guy underestimated the hatchet. -
oh yeah man, i just meant that my buddy and i were probably the ones who got them so fired up as to do that. they tried sneaking up on the hill where fire was coming from (but i was relocating after kills) they tried ghosting me (but got killed and looted) so their last resort was to hack the server. pretty sad. take your beatings like a man.
-
i was there too, happened about 2 am cst. maybe a couple minutes before. it might have been my fault, i went on a killing spree at the elektro fire station and apparently pissed some folks off. somebody even tried to nightcrawler me and appeared 10m in front of me. got a coyote pack and gps off of him. he possibly had some sort of damage reduction hack because i shot him about 5 times with a dmr and emptied 2 clips of 1911 into his head before he FINALLY died. in direct chat: "stone cold you're so stone cold!" made me laugh. then i killed someone else on the firestation roof and was teleported to swimmy time. hackers are sad, i'll get more gear, but they will never get balls. edit: the poster above me (wisbowmen) was with me for a while acting as spotter until he somehow got killed coming back to where i was at the time. his death was kinda fishy too, but w/e. he came back and got his gun back and my old pack that i had looted off of the guy with the coyote, and then we are in the ocean.

Oh no watch out im unarmed please blow me away...
StoneColdSteve replied to Slyguy65's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i killed a guy today who had nothing but a hatchet. i was in a field near kozlovka about to kill a sheep for some meat, and i turn around and theres this guy with a hatchet running at me. i point my rifle (aks74 kobra) at him and he stops about 30m away from me and just stands there. doesn't say a word. just then, a zombie runs up (there was a building a little ways off, and you know how zombie telescopic vision is) and starts hitting him. i figure he can just hatchet it down np, but he takes a couple hits and starts bleeding. im about to help him out but he FINALLY kills it and bandages himself. he still hasn't said a word, so i tell him to go away over direct chat. i didn't really want a hatchet-wielding mute hanging around me, especially as i was decently kitted out (nothing exotic, but all of the basics you could want) he just stands there looking at me. i quickly scan the area for more zombies or friends of his, and he starts to close the gap on me again. now he's like 15m away. he's acting pretty fishy. so i pop him once, thinking he will run away. he just sits there. staring. this guy kinda creeps me out at this point, so i empty about half a clip into his face. he had a couple of mags for my ak and a coke, so he wasn't a completely worthless kill after all. i know he was technically armed, what with the hatchet and all, and yeah, i have my share of hatchet kills against players armed with guns, but i totally had the drop on this guy and really didn't have to kill him. i probably coulda just run away. i killed him just because he was creeping me out. even if he didn't have the hatchet i probably woulda killed him for acting like that. if someone shows up, even unarmed, and doesn't say anything, and doesn't go away when i tell them to, im gonna kill them. i won't go out of my way to kill new spawns, but if they act like they wanna die then i will oblige them -
i like your story, but... you were in stary. stary murder-capital-of-chernarus sobor. on the danger meter i'd put stary a notch above even nw airfield. if you are not prepared to kill, you should probably stay away from military sites. you see, i can understand refraining from killing someone on the coast. they are a new spawn, they don't have anything yet anyway. even in a city, you can probably avoid bloodshed if you want. at stary, though, its KOS always. nobody goes to look for high-end military loot so that they can kill zombies with it. everybody going into that deathtrap of a tent line is on a hair trigger. if it makes you feel any better i'm pretty sure that guy woulda killed you if he had known what was up. i don't really understand your angst, as it really is just a game, and you can kit yourself out pretty easily from deer stands and inland supermarkets. unless you have a bunch of really exotic stuff dying isnt really that big of a deal. so you killed a guy. don't sweat it. maybe you need some desensitization training. go to the highest-pop server you can find, get an axe, and run full-tilt around cherno for a while trying to split some skulls. anyway, good luck. i hope there's lots of players like you on every server i go to. i also hope you are really lucky with your loot spawns so i can get some great stuff off of your corpse.

no, i can't see the back of my own head irl, nor can i see around corners without sticking my head out. on the other hand, i don't walk around wearing horse blinders either. the 1st-person view in this game is incredibly bad, if your vision looks like this irl you need to go see an eye doctor. tell him your peripheral vision has gone blind. the 3rd person view gives a much closer approximation to my real life awareness of my surroundings and my body position. i can do a lot of things irl that it's just not possible in a game to simulate. if i'm crawling through high grass, i can pick my head up and peek over the top without getting all the way up into a kneeling position. it's much easier to control one's body to peek around a corner than to painstakingly crouch-walk up to the EXACT right spot in a game and press q/e. i can scan my vison around effortlessly with both eye movement and head turning WITHOUT changing direction or having to use a command to enable "free look" and then hurriedly turn it off so i don't run into a wall. if being snotty about how hardcore you are because you only play 1st person makes you feel good, then ok, go ahead. it DOES make the game harder, no doubt, but it is NOT more realistic. it's just an extra handicap. if you are really super-1337 hardcore man you should turn your sound off too, maybe jack your video settings down enough so it looks like nighttime in the brightest day. that way you can play as a deaf person with some sort of even-more exotic eye disease than just lacking the ability to see anything not directly in front of you.

3rd person is MORE realistic.
StoneColdSteve replied to StoneColdSteve's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
messing with fov is just substituting one eye disease for another. "great, my peripheral vison is back! umm, why is everything so far away?" 3rd person is flawed for sure, but it's still a closer approximation to my actual awareness of my surroundings than 1st person is.
