[1.7.1.5] Character stats reset and Items missing upon log in
hkurban posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Date/Time: 1900-2030 Eastern Time on July 3rd What happened: Disconnected to take a dinner break. Upon reconnect, I found my character in the middle of a road near where I had disconnected. My character was no longer wearing the camo suit I had put on a few minutes prior to disconnect (still in inventory), my character still had the winchester that I gave to a teammate a few minutes prior, and my M249 had disappeared from my inventory (or that of anyone else in my group for that matter). Additionally, all of my character stats had been reset. 0 zombie kills, 0 headshots, 0 murders, etc. and 12000 blood. Disconnecting and reconnecting did not rectify the problem in any way. Another member of my group found himself spawned in Kamenka for some reason. His character had also had all stats reset, but he retained all inventory items. My guess is this is some sort of server hiccup, as there was a time shortly prior to disconnect where my inventory and location matched the one upon reconnect. Still, this does not seem to explain my friend's random teleportation to Kamenka. Where you were: Started out near the base of Pik Kozlova upon disconnect. Reconnected at the road between Pik Kozlova and the Cap Golova lighthouse. What you were doing: Reconnecting to a server after having disconnected for an hour. *Current installed version: 1.7.1.5 *Server(s) you were on: Seattle 74 *Your system specs: Win 7 64 Bit, i7 Processor, 8GB DDR RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX580 *Timeline of events before/after error: --The week prior, acquire a DMR and Mk48 off of a dead player. Lose the DMR to an inventory glitch. Teammate kept Mk48. -- Earlier today, I find M249 at lucky Heli Crash site a few meters away from my logout point near Berezino. Teammate loses Mk48 to inventory glitch on the way south to meet up with friends. --Met up with group of friends on Pik Kozlova. Had an M249 and winchester in inventory/backpack respectively. --One inexperienced friend died from zombies down by the road, so I went down to secure his stuff (he didn't have much) but he did have camo clothing that he couldn't use b/c of female character. --Attempted to trade winchester to friend. To avoid any sort of backpack or inventory glitch (as had happened with a DMR and Mk48 earlier), I first dumped the 249 in the middle of the road. I then walked a few meters and dumped the Winchester before going back to pick up my M249. -- Shortly thereafter I put on my new camo suit. -- Minutes later, we agreed to break for dinner and come back in about an hour. I move my character up into the foothills of Pik Kozlova. -- Upon login, character/inventory wipe is experienced. After a few minutes of raging, I attempt to log out and log back in. -- Aside from missing items, all items in my inventory still work including the camo clothing still in the inventory. -- Continue about my business, a little more than slightly pissed off, but enjoying the dayZ experience none the less -
It's sad that people leave when server hits night
hkurban replied to Rager (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I play at night when I get the chance. With gamma up and whatnot, I can makeout shape outlines and high contrast texture differences IE light vs dark, etc. It's enough to get around without chemlights or flashlights, so I usually am able to ninja around without being spotted (assuming there's no NVG users out and about). I like that there are so few players on at night, as it makes the game's world has a life to it. People perceive nighttime is dangerous (humans are not optimized for nocturnal activity, and our metabolism is based heavily on a long rest period that for most of society coincides with the day/night cycle, etc). As a result, it feels like the world of DayZ is "asleep". Most of the survivors have sought some hole to bunker down in, too afraid to move out and venture out into the unknown. Most of the bandits have gone back to their camps to swap murder stories, drink whiskey, and nod off at their tents. The operative word here, however, is "MOST." There will always be a few "night stalkers". Favorite part of playing at night, ambling my way through a forest or field, wind whipping up the leaves, than suddenly a bright flash of daylight and crack from an approaching thunderstorm. Almost makes me jump out of my seat. -
If DayZ wasn't situated in Chernarus

Lingor Island http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=10792 Emita City, Taviana Island, Fallujah City, and even Zargabad to an extent. http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=15482 http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=15085 http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=12315 http://community.bis...m/wiki/Zargabad Winter Pomegratskaya, Namalsk, Vostok Winter http://www.armaholic...age.php?id=8633 http://www.armaholic...age.php?id=7781 http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=13807 A number of these aformentioned maps fit the bill, with several containing multilane highways bisecting the map at points. There's no shortage of these in Arma 2, including a plethora of maps based on regions of Afghanistan, then there's Zargabad, Takistan, Sharpur, Qom Province, Isla Duala (more of a FarCry2-esque Africa Map), and many more. http://media.photobu...poftakistan.jpg http://www.armaholic...ge.php?id=13982 http://www.armaholic...age.php?id=9150 ------------------------------- All in all, there are countless different environments in Arma 2. I recommend you download some of these and mess around with them in the editor. Some of the mapmakers are truly brilliant and deserve recognition for their hard work. Rocket and Co's time is mostly devoted to getting DayZ stable and working properly, I highly doubt they would create a new map out of the blue, but all they'd need to do to get an existing map working is to set up player and object spawn points, loot tables for the new buildings, and the clutter and debris that sets DayZ Chernarus apart from regular Chernarus. If enough people petitioned Rocket to implement an EXISTING Arma 2 map into DayZ, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to do so, seeing as he's already expressed an interest in doing just that. -
This is a cool story, and I mean that in an entirely non-sarcastic way. I was going to withhold my beans until I saw photo or videographic proof of your exploits, but honestly, if you fabricated this story, it's pretty damn good with a lot of attention to detail.

Why is DayZ/Arma so easily hacked?
hkurban replied to kurtthecobain's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Mainly its because Arma II's focus was primarily cooperative teamplay, and hacking was almost a non-issue. -
There's plenty of Alcohol in DayZ, but all of it has been drank already.

I refuse to exploit, Abort, or server hop to avoid death, obtain gear or kills. What about you?
hkurban replied to Max Railgrave's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Which is why its one of the only ones I do. And at this point I rarely do. I've got more ammo than I need at this point, and I probably would still have plenty even if i hadn't done this. I have no problem admitting it because all the ammo in the world hardly makes a difference when encountering players. Most of the fights I've been in have never lasted longer than a minute, and if someone gets the jump on me, then there's nothing I can do but try to fight back. Exploits that dampen another player's experience like combat logging, ghosting, etc, don't even cross my mind. -
Are ghillie suits back in or did I just survive a hacker?
hkurban posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So I was on US 535 riding around on a bike looking for heli crash sites with a buddy who was on foot. I got separated from my friend, then thought I had found him, only he had a green blob following him. As soon as I realized this was not my friend, I booked it out of there as fast as I could, serpentining my bike as .50 cal and M16 rounds landed all around me. Poor aim aside, I was under the impression Ghillie suits were not available at all in 1.7.2.3, so my question is did this guy manage to hold onto his ghillie throughout all the issues, or did someone do some "soft" hacking to get an edge? Below: Ghillie suit and Barret on the rightmost bandit. Not sure what the other guy had but it sounded like maybe an M16. Judging by the size of the scope though, probably DMR or a FN FAL with PVS. -

hkurban replied to hkurban's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ok, I think I understand. Was just trying to wrap my head around how it was possible this guy had one without having hacked it in. Not like it helped him and his terrible aim shooting at a guy on a bike moving away on an open field. -

hkurban replied to Max Railgrave's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The intent of my statement was to say I do not just log off when my magazines are nearly empty just to get them back up to full. Still, since I know about this bug, I'll swap mags before they are empty, and assuming I haven't died, the next time I log in they will probably be full again. But if rocket has fixed it and I find the mags still have 1 round left in them, oh well. Boo hoo. Call it a contradiction if you want, I won't tell you what you can and can't do. If my intent was lost or we're just seeing things from different angles I apologize. -

From what you are saying it sounds like they are still broken. Are they not broken for everybody? Can some small percentage of players get a ghillie on without going for a swim? From what I had heard this affected people wearing Ghillies prior to the update as well. -

hkurban replied to Max Railgrave's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't just disconnect when I feel like it, but when I log out for the day, I usually have a few mags with 2 or 3 rounds left, and the next day they are full. No contradiction to be had. -

hkurban replied to Max Railgrave's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The only rules here I break is hopping on and off a bike to fix it, and while I won't DC to replenish ammo, I will swap mags before they are empty knowing full well that next time I log in to play they'll be topped off. Other than that, I abide by this. -
I've been working on something along these lines in Arma 2 for some time now, taking place in the "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-verse". A lot of what you mention here is quite possible within the Arma Engine and has already been dabbled in by various mod-makers. Right now this project is in its infancy... basic mechanics and whatnot. If anyone has any experience in scripting or creating game content, and this idea interests you, feel free to shoot me a PM.

why does everyone hate tthe idea of duel weapons
hkurban replied to resistence1993's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Here's some really big cons: The engine is not built to handle dual weapons. It would take an entirely new set of animations, scripts, etc. It would require an overhall of the already glitchy inventory system The manhours and work it would take to implement it would take away from the precious dev time needed to already fix existing bugs and implement promised features. The new code required to implement dual wield would likely cause more bugs than its worth. -
They're stock Arma 2 items (found in the editor) but they are not automatically in game. 99.9% of the trash, wreckages, and makeshift barricades were added to the map by Rocket. To be fair, the amount of vehicle wrecks available are pretty limited. For instance, in terms of military ground vehicle wrecks, there's a Humvee, UAZ, Ural, BRDM, BMP, and T-72 with the turret popped off. Wrecks of any vehicle in the game COULD theoretically be added, but they wouldn't look as good and would be more strenuous on the programming.

The Difference Between A Good Bandit and a Bad Bandit
hkurban replied to alienxxi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
A group of friends and I, when we're feeling particularly bandity (not often in my case), will hold up players we see and order them to tell us a joke. If we like the joke, they live. If we don't, well... more beans for us. -

hkurban replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That may be true, but one could argue that the bastardization of a language brought into common usage could be seen as the evolution of a language. After all, when the Brits conquered explored much of the world, they bastardized pretty much every non-germanic and romantic language they came across, and their versions became the norm, some of which are still used today (just to clarify, I'm not angry about this, just stating historical fact). Bottom line, I don't see any dialect of English as right or wrong. They just are. I'm starting to stray into Linguistics thesis territory so I'll drop it now. I'm well aware of your al-you-mini-yum pronouncing ways :P. I feel like there was a Monty Python skit on the subject I saw back in the day but I could be wrong. -

hkurban replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The first time I ever heard Zed was on Stargate Atlantis, where a Canadian character referred to something called a ZPM as a "Zed Pee Em", so I don't associate it with Zombies per se, but I do associate it with other-than-american pronunciations of the letter Zee. Not sure which countries follow this pronunciation rule, but I highly doubt it is everybody, since Rocket says Zee. -
There are altruistic reasons not to shoot. But it seems not many people get a feeling of altruism over the internet for strangers they don't know with digital avatars. Also, holy crap your text is hard to read. What's up with that?

Over 2200 people online on ARMA2 cheat forums
hkurban replied to zogin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The biggest problem with combatting hacks here is that a lot of these hacks are based on SQF scripts, which are also essentially the backbone of what makes DayZ work in Arma 2. The way SQF files work is: a parameter tells the game to read the SQF script. Basically the parameter says "if this condition is true, run xyz.sqf" and it will search for the SQF file either in the MP mission .pbo file or the addon .pbo (In DayZ's case it is the addon .pbo.) From there, the game will read the language in the SQF file and apply the commands to in game. For instance, there is probably an SQF called "drinking.sqf" that says, when the player right clicks and hits "drink water" on the water bottle, replace water bottle with empty water bottle, replenish the player's thirst meter, play the water drinking sound, and display the message "you have consumed 1 water bottle". I have not encountered a hacker yet, but based on the hacks I'm hearing described and seeing in videos, it sounds like they are either supplanting their own SQF files in place of existing ones, or adding to existing sqf files in order to keep their original function and game integrity, while still being able to bring in their own custom content/actions. With option A. A hacker would create a new script, call it "drinking.sqf" and replace the original. Then whenever drinking.sqf is activated, the hackers script would be called. With option B, drinking.sqf would still perform all of the intended functions, but would have the side effects the hacker implemented. For instance, say the hacker made it so that along with all of the normal effects, after the water animation is finished, drinking.sqf also spawns a fully functional, fully crewed Abrams tank in front of the hacker. These are only some simplistic examples to show that most of these hacks are hard for the game to tell are hacks, because they are doing the same thing legit scripts do, which is to tell the game to do something beyond its normal parameters. It is therefore difficult for a game like this to track hackers other than through players experiencing their mischief in game. My suggestion is to develop some sort of third party file checker that will check the integrity of the DayZ addon and mission folders to ensure there are no extra scripts and all legit scripts have not been modified. The biggest problem with this though, aside from the manpower allocation necessary, is trying to get Arma 2 and or Battle Eye to count this third party script checker as a prerequesite for joining a DayZ server. -

Or Notch for that matter. Pretty sure its against Minecraft's TOS to make money off of mods or otherwise profiting from their IP without their go ahead. I could be wrong though, it's been forever since I played Minecraft.
