So they should spend resources developing defecation that could instead be put towards zombies obeying the laws of physics? Really? I would love to see a breakdown of the yes votes vs. the no votes by age. For some reason I think their modality would be young vs. old. If they add it I'm done with the game, and I would bet good money the majority of people old enough to buy the game on their own and buy DLC would feel the same way.

I got overwhelmed by zombies in Balota yesterday despite trapping them. They just glitched their way through the doors/walls. The developers should just give them lazer beams and planet killers if they need to cheat to make up for shortcomings. It is getting silly...

I find mosins lately like dogs find bones. haha!

Oh hell yeah but I have not been there so you got one on me (sounds like you have many on me, lol). Quartzite - usually a hard stone but you are climbing something that has been weathering forever, and the genesis of quartzite is sandstone, so you start with a sedimentary material of unkown purity, cement and reorganize ionic structure metamorphically, then allow it to sit exposed for a million+ years... I could see where over time the fractures make it a suicidal climb. I climbed a small escarpment by Jasper Beach near Machias and was lucky I didn't fall the 20 to 30 feet as the material was so loose we had movement with each hand up. I used to hit the Shawangunks in NY for climbing. I wasn't one to climb the big heights but this place was pretty renowned for it. http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/trips/americas-best-adventures/climb-new-york-gunks/ If you ever get to that part of the world I highly recommend it. BTW - thanks for fighting the fires. And to heck with the tree huggers. They only see the world from the center of their universe.

LOL yeah, but for good reason. I am living in the left coast as well and last week I had to go north of Auburn to look at a job site. It was like walking into hell because of the raging fire northeast of Placerville. I am so paranoid about starting a fire I won't use model rockets with my son until the wet season is here (if it happens, that is.) Barbera Boxer did not endorse this message.

Well done devs. No, really, I mean it...

I agree completely OP. There are a few things I wish they would focus on fixing next, but progress is to be encouraged. I just wish some of the other bits like zed mechanics, layering, etc., made some leaps forward soon. But that is me being greedy. :P -

Sure, if they develop the parts that look like my head after a good shave. I agree there. More Islands would be cool as well but while technology grows every two years and allows more and more server traffic without lag I don't know that we've come to the point that it can handle 100 people PLUS zombie action. I and a couple others have been messing around with getting zombie stampedes going, locking multiples up in buildings, etc. If enough people do the same thing it will tax a server out as I have already experienced lag from just my own guy causing a 10+ hoard to run around after me. Multiply me by 80 doing the same thing... throw in the "kill one zombie and two take its place dynamic" that used to exist and we have the potential to make one of those "Dick move of the year" threads where a few people take down a server just by playing the game and exploiting some loopholes the devs didn't see or plan for. BTW, if it seems like I am dumping on the devs I am not. I bring this stuff up in hopes that if they didn't think about it they should know we are, and if we are, just imagine when they release the program and people who do nothing but sit around all day long dreaming of ways to grief MMOs get their hands on it. This is all meant for developer consumption even if it is all planned for and summarily thrown in the garbage can. They asked for input. Well, here it is. I wish some of the fanboys on this site respected that concept. -
Actually, that sounds a lot like a trader I ran into the other day. I couldn't say for sure, but the whole folded-up-stacked-high cap vests thing sounds like something a trader would do to maximize haul.

My thought exactly. If you bumped the total number of people up on a server by 500% the total number of peeps in a city won't rise in lock step to 500% as well... it will hit a maximum where people start feeling very unsafe in any city and they will ditch to parts assumed safer which is the country side. That means that all those big open areas where you wonder if someone is watching you? Well, suddenly they will be alive with multiple bogeys. -
I was more inclined for the parts a little to the northeast as it took me to an amazing columnar formation. I have a geology degree so the basaltic columns of the Devil's Postpile are something I enjoy visiting. As an aside, did you ever go to Mono Lake? They filmed an Eastwood western there. On setting up a fire IRL, tell me, did you ever need a "fireplace kit?" The concept is just so damn hokey, as is instantly breaking it down to components including the burning embers log. chucking it in your backpack, and scrambling outta there before the bad guys ride in. BUT, I can forgive the quick breakdown and lack of respect for glowing embers as all alpha stuff or fantasy you suffer through for the benefit the game offers in entertainment value. What is broken to the core is needing a firestarter "kit." When I was a kid, pre-hairy bits no less, I could walk into any forested place and gather what I needed in likely less than a minute. My fire starter kit was a pocket knife and a box of blue tips. Give me a minute to make some kindling and get some dry grass for the real 1st step to making a fire, and then get er ripping. I never used a burlap sack. I never had to chop down a tree. I must be a wizard or something! Or maybe the guys making this game should talk to some people, perhaps a nephew in boy scouts... and get some real world advice on what is good, and what is silly. And give us layering.

As I mentioned earlier it isn't about whether we are in alpha or not. I get alpha as I have supported all sorts of seemingly broken parts of the game in the past with the alpha factoid. I also expect that many things will be improved on in time - such as the complete removal of rotten food. They made the keep/don't keep choice, and I believe they made the right one. The devs brought weather in and I like it. But along with it they didn't institute any way to defeat it using a system that makes sense. The concept of a fire kit, needing to chop a green tree down to make a log... It reminds me of when someone (who never played) tries to tell me about hockey, or worse, designs a hockey game without any input from people who know the sport from a practical level. It is humorous. So here we are with the beginning of a weather mechanic that are married to a clothing mechanic, storage mechanic, fire building mechanic, and they scream that the folks building this have no idea on a practical level of what they are doing. Is this the worst thing in the world? Of course not, but just like when you have someone writing a book about a subject they know nothing about, it helps to do some amount of research, consult people who do know what is important to make the form of entertainment as close to reality as possible because the last thing you want is for someone to throw their hands up and say, "this is silly, like ridiculous silly." This opening stab at climate & thermal mechanics is silly. Not being able to wear a shirt beneath your hoodie is silly. And yes, it is silly even for an alpha. I am not looking for a polished end result like you say. I am looking for a solid start, which this is not.

Thank you and here's some beans for the recommendation to read the postman as opposed to watching the movie I wish I could erase from my memory. The Sierras rock. I am a big fan of Mammoth Lake and Tahoe.

I haven't had a cig in my mouth for over 15 years boss. Cold turkey is the way to go or you just aren't trying, just beware the weight gain. DayZ's map is super huge which is one thing that keeps me coming back BUT it gets crowded when maxed out depending on who is on with you. 200? **** yes it will be crowded. The cool part about this game is the long quiet bits punctuated by the unexpected pants shitting PvP moment. If you are desiring a game where it is massive Group A vs. Massive Group B there is this thing called Battlefield 4... I do recommend giving it a check but a good 10% of the base cheats with wall hacks and aimbots, among other things. Kinda hard to respect the FACT the makers of that shitware encourage the activity. My hope is BI wants to be better than that. This last wipe gives me hope. -

Regarding 100+ server sizes... That is more fps cod, bf4, etc. In nature. If they are trying for a survival game there has to be a limit. It would be anti-fun for the survivalusts if the areas are all crowded. Imo, 40 people per server at current size of the map is almost too many. If you run a shard that is fps PvP themed and zero survival themed then yeah, stick 200 into the meat grinder if you can. -
The system is broken and disregards reality. For example, in real life (OH NO! NOT REAL LIFE!!! Bane of programmers) I climbed Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine on a regular basis over 10 years. My typical experience: Start out as a hot summer day, hike up and start peeling layers off from heat, halfway up start bundling back up from cold, reach the summit after peeling layers off again from heat... it varied. Katahdin, First ascent = 1800' above MSL. Summit = 5200' above MSL. Mist, wind, clouds, weather, and my activity level in general played more heavily into me being hot or cold than the actual temp. They have to make a system that isn't overly complex and I get that, but right now they don't even have a good model to follow, let alone getting the mechanics right. If you ever hiked and know what I am talking about, bean me. BTW, I liked Stake Land.

what's your favorite backpack to use?
Zombie Milkman replied to TheMaxedout's topic in General Discussion
with a can of silicon I can make all the backpacks water proof. I wish some of these developers would go visit an REI one day. I am guessing BI is located someplace between SF and San Jose. Go on a company trip to Mendocino or Tahoe. -
Temperature effects are broken since hotfix
Zombie Milkman replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
True on the vest but that isn't the layering I mean. I am referring to thermal layering. The vests add zero insulation which is ok, but you should be able to use multiple shirts and such to completely defeat the cold. Currently you can't which is pattently ridiculous. I think the reason is because they Don't want folks abusing the pocket system, but they do by allowing stacked clothes in pockets (need to fix that soon)... IDK ...Cool in Maine boss. I used to go to Machias, Belfast, Desert Isle, Katahdin.... Love Maine. -
And I am all for that. Interestingly, I ran to the new tent city west of Myshka and it was pretty devoid of loot.

My 3rd person toon has 2. I would be happy to trade it to you for the small price of an M4, tent, or flame thrower.

TwinSpire - I want to address several things you stated so I broke your post up for ease of response. I hope you don't take it in the wrong light, ro that my responses are meant in any way as being attacking or trollish because I respect your POV. It goes way beyond something like that. While playing this game, which I like quite a bit and can't say that enough, I have been bugged by some of the core pieces of a survival game which should be more in tune with the topic. They are just flat out wrong when they should not be, and it is not a matter of exaggeration as you suggest. To explain the difference I see - the gun mechanics. Yeah ok, even melee, not near COD or BF4 but that's not what they are trying to sell. They CAN and will because it sells games, and I am all for this game thriving any which way it can, but it is fairly obvious even with the last release where they introduced thermal issues, wetness, etc., surviving is a need to have and pvp shooter is a nice to have element. I can completely forgive the clunky shooting/melee system. I am less forgiving on the surviving part. And I expect as we are all in the alpha for a reason, that the powers that be SHOULD care about this kind of input. Hell, the advice comes free of charge. Ask them how many of their contractors work for free. This is different. I am all for the shorter starvation/thirst issues as most people don't play the game 24/7. The temperature issues are different because you can't layer at all and that is such a glaring omission... like screen door on a submarine glaring omission. You try to relate the shorter starvation/thirst cycle to the issues with getting hypothermia in 5 minutes and I am sorry boss, it is just flat wrong. A better analogy would be if they prevented you from eating at all because not allowing someone to have on a shirt AND a hoodie AND a wool coat at the same time is way closer to that than what you theorized... Why did they do this? I can make an educated guess but I don't know why. Does it even matter? Their system as currently designed is a 2 out of 10. I think one of the reasons they did this is because even a T-shirt has carrying capacity. Every article of cloting has carrying capacity and they don't want someone running around with 10000 pockets. That was a good idea tbh, but instead of having this silly "only 1 upper piece of clothing" rule they should have used a system that only allows the top most layer to have active pockets. That way you still limit the loot, but increase the realism factor. Thermal protection and clothing system currently... 2 out of 10 realism. That needs to change. The developers have to make a choice actually, because this game is either an FPS, and as FPS's go it is on the very low end, or it will be a survival game in Zed land which currently there aren't any good ones with this game's promise. Maybe you are right, they are going for the fun factor. Well, where's the fun in having to spend 4 real time hours in front of a fire because you can't put three layers of clothes on you currently have in your hand? For that matter where's the fun in getting blasted by a zombie through a wall from 20' away? See, some things are just broken and need fixing. The lack of being able to layer and warm up needs fixing and with the addition of exposure, it needs fixing on the sooner side. And it isn't a reach to say the developers don't have the first clue about surviving in the wild. It is blatantly obvious for anyone who did that they understand it the way my reading a pamphlet on dialysis makes me an expert on kidney diseases. Question: what's the most you ever roughed it? -

Zombie Milkman replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
True. And I have dried wet wood on a fire no less. Seasoned wood is still the best like the other poster said but you can do it with a green piece. That said... If I had an entire forest to work with it would take me no more than 5 minutes without an axe to gather kindling and larger up to and including good logs to make a roaring fire with. When I was 9 Yeats old I survived on a 50 acre island off the coast of Maine for a week with the clothes on my back, a box of matches, a knife, some fishing line, a hook, and 5 gallons of water. I made fires as needed, I put them out as needed, I gathered plenty big logs as needed, and somehow survived an entire week in damp foggy conditions better than an adult in this game can in less than 8 hours. So yes it is SO obvious that the developers have not consulted anyone who roughed it outdoors without the benefit of a hotel with a Jacuzzi... Any of the hunters or military people in here will tell you the same thing btw... Again, I was 9 years old yet I could out survive our adult toons in cold damp weather? LOLZ!!!!! -

Kirov... thanks, but I have zero interest in speculation and best guessery from players even if they were Carl Sagan. This needs to be templated right from the devs because it is silly not to. -

The bottom line is the system is a broken mess. Here is why: 1. You can't layer your clothes. This would solve all the issues plus it is what you do in real life. I can't put a shirt and a hoodie under a rainjacket? Absurd! But alpha so ok, promise to fix this and I am ok. 2. Stop with the secret sauce BS. Keep a chart somewhere that tells us the current state of thermal ratings for the various clothes. Also tell us relative clothing combos to meet minimum outdoor temp requirements. The lack of communication on this is silly as we are your testers who paid to help test your product. Help us to help you. 3. I get cold, I build a campfire, I warm up, I get rid of campfire, I am freezing again in minutes... If you think I will play a game that requires 4 hours of real time sitting next to a campfire you are either a mental patient or a moron. Fix this first and do so by fixing layering. -
