I too am a little confused when the server list comes up. I get that they are all running the same game with the same basic rules. But reset times, day/night 24/7, starting spawns aren't always the same. Most will tell you in the title reset and day/night settings, but I have yet to decipher spawn settings. Some servers ignore my saved data and spawn me as a bambie, usually the fragnet servers do this. Fragnet servers also seem to be pretty empty, and there are a fuck ton of them. Are people avoiding them (I have started avoiding the fragnet servers) and why, are there other servers to avoid (I'm mostly worried about bambie spawns)

I finally found a compass last night, saw it on a shelf in the school building at the end of the railroad track on the west side of the map. Only to have the red chain/server reset countdown before I could grab it. Of course. I did finally combine maps to have a complete in game map. so there is that (I refuse to tab out to check an online map, I had been trying to navigate from memory) Having a complete in game map now makes navigating from road signs much easier. Plus the ingame map has the best topographical info.

It seem like there are allot more now. Where once there might be one not it seems there are three or four lurking about

Then your repeated death should be incentive to get a mic. Over teamspeak or game coms? Flight of the Valkyries night be cool too. I'm never going to engage a 4 man squad heading to a hotzone. Now I will kill someone playing rap music over their mic or happily die trying.

when I meet someone at first I try to stay out of melee range at first, I keep my weapon lowered, and stay slightly turned at an angle to try and demonstrate that I am not hostile. I expect people to also try and demonstrate that they are not hostile too. What I'm talking about are those people that run right up on you in melee range, maybe looking to knock you out.

Yeah, if he was sick all the moaning and retching was bound to attract zombies or bandits. Better to put him out of his misery.
-
If they don't speak. kill on sight if they refuse to lower their weapon at the very least, if not completely put it away. Kill on sight If they insist you put your weapon on the ground. kill on sight if they sound like they are 10 years old. kill on sight (likely to get easily bored and kill you) if they play crappy music over mic. kill on sight (assumes everyone simply LOVES the music they are playing and will likely become easily offended when you complain about it, or complain about anything they do, and kill you) plus music breaks the GD immersion People that seem to always be trying to stay behind you, always circling around behind you, or keeps running into melee range. kill on sight. And like the OP said, aim your weapons at me once, and I will put you down. you never aim at anything you don't want to kill, so aim at me and I'm going to assume you mean to kill me. Never warn a player of your actions. Say a player aims at you. Don't warn them not to do it. just kill them. DayZ is a harsh, cruel world only the strong (and smart) survive.

I was watching some people play experimental on twitch and yeah, zombies seem allot tougher. This is a great thing. it bugs the shit out of me that people can run around Berenzino popping off rounds and never attract a single zombie, much less 10 from every direction. Shooting should be the last option to deal with a situation because you don't want 30 zombies swarming you from every direction. I am avoiding the high pop servers until I'm a little more comfortable with the game. learning to crawl before you run and all that. And untill I have some skilled freinds to play with I will also avoid the hotzones. I'm not terribly interested in PvP squad play anyway. Been there, done that.

Yeah it pops up for a few seconds. It's not an "always on" thing

true, using cardinal points is the best way to communicate directions to squad mates occupying the same location (eye on target moving to the south), but nobody is going to pull out a compass, take a bearing, and say "SKS fire coming from 231 degrees". Good players will keep cardinal directions in their head at all times. They will know which direction they are facing, heading, and directions their mates are in, Better players will be able to reverse the directions for issuing command (Billy is south of me so:"Billy I am to your north"). But mostly it seems players always hunt in the same area and name the features then orient themselves with those features (target at ATC moving towards the hangers)
-
yes, right now a broken red chain pops up when another player is within 1000m (or so I've heard, I'm probably wrong about this distance). I have heard this happens as the two players and the server sync with each other.

I'm sure I will find one, probably when I'm no longer in need of it. I found couple when I first started playing but now that I actually want it can't find one to save my life. At least with the current build, food, water, basic clothing and basic weapons are very, very easy to find (I would suggest maybe too easy). The compass is a very specific item, maybe a little too rare given it's limited use in PvE (your skills will quickly outgrow it's need), and complete uselessness in PvP (I can see no advantage it would give the PvP squad players). So maybe it shouldn't be quite so rare (It been fairly rare for me) I've never used the flashlight. While I do carry a head lamp (never used it), and I do not avoid playing at night. I get what I need done before the sun goes down and avoid civilization after dark (it occurs to me that a compass is even more needed for night navigation). There is just no safe way to use a light at night, doing so just puts a huge kill me sign on you. I don't even use campfires or portable stoves after dark. I do see a use for flares and the upcoming chem light (in experimental) to use as diversions when you need to loot or move throught a dangersous area.

This is great to hear, I actually hate the red chain. It destroys immersion.

I'm sure I will eventually know the map by heart and have zero need for a compass, or watch. But as noob I am finding it very frustrating that I can't use this strategy (and why put it in the game?), and that it will eventually become unnecessary. Doesn't that strengthen my point? A noob needs a compass while a more experienced player doesn't. A flashlight... a sure way to give away your position and get yourself killed.

I am playing the game, my way. I'm not running for the closest weapon then dashing down the road for a little PvP at Berenzino or the NWA. I'm playing lonewolf survivor living off the land, and I need a god damn compass. Like I said, twice now I have spawned into what said it was a morning server only to later discover it was actually a evening server, and dead reckoning with the sun went it the opposite direction I wanted to go. Without a watch it can take awhile to figure this out. And now I'm always wondering. Plus I'm not using roads to travel, I will occasionally approach a town to see the town sign and confirm my bearings (and maybe find some food/fill up my canteens), but I stick to the forests. I'm trying to explore the whole map and without a compass trying to triangulate your position using landmarks and topographical features is almost impossible (and they added this ability/feature to the game for a reason). I don't think there is a single road the runs n-s or e-w on the whole map, If I knew that my breath would always blow towards the east, or campfire smoke blows east (when there are no clouds moving in the sky), this would make determining east in the absence of knowing the time of day much easier. Or infinitely fucking easier, spawning with a compass instead of the flashlight which I immediately throw away because it's useless.

So far I've had nothing but friendly experiences. I avoid hi pop servers like the plague, and also avoid the hotzones. When I see the red chain I go on high alert, try and spot them before they spot me (this is especially important to determine if they are alone or with friends), and choose advantageous place for first contact, And my first words are "friendly", not "hi". Always try and have the upper hand. I like to approach while people are in a building looking for loot. I say I'm friendly and try to get them talking, ask if they need food, water, or med supplies. They know I'm outside but not exactly where, and that I have the drop on them. But because I have chosen to talk and not pump them full of lead as they walk out the door it seems to have gone well so far. If they don't talk I either beat a retreat or waste them, and tell them why I'm killing them (use your mic!). But I'm sure I have been living a charmed life so far and it's only a matter of time till someone roleplaying a psychopath blows my head off.

I've seen that some servers reset every 2 hours. This is just so loot respawns, right? The time and weather stays the same or do they reset too?

Three things that completely ruin the DayZ experience...
zyryx replied to Daricles's topic in New Player Discussion
I think most of this can be avoided if you avoid the PvP hotzones (NW airfield and Berenzino ATM). Though I have hopped to a new server a few times when I the one I am on seems to have been looted. I would love to see loot respawn without a server reset. I hate getting on a server that resets every two hours and breaks the immersion. -
What is the difference between "Worn" and "Pristine" (Clothing ONLY)
zyryx replied to KingJaeEmpire's topic in New Player Discussion
I get that we should always upgrade to a less worn item when possible. My questions is: Say I have a badly damaged/ruined assault vest, I want all the extra inventory slots it provides. Will items stored in the ruined clothing disappear simulating holes in pockets, and are items stored in ruined clothing more susceptible to damage and therefore you should only keep less valuable/common items in ruin clothing? -
Also, how soon does the experimental updates transfer to the stable servers?

What are the disadvantages for keeping badly damaged and ruined clothing? -
The in game maps are much better for navigating, the topographical info matched with a compass is perfect for getting around when you avoid going anywhere near a road.

Good stuff here I didn't know. I saw a "camo" mosin and had no idea how it was done (now to find some green paint). The compass is proving very hard to find, I found a couple easily when I first started playing, and dying. but my current character has been around quite awhile, fully geared with all pristine, but I still need a pristine LRS and that bloody compass. I'm still playing lonewolf/surviver at the moment but I'm confused by hunting/cooking. Is it better to go with the gas stove/skillet/cook pot option or the campfire/stone option. Can you cook meat in either the skillet or pot (and are there other recipes with rice and veggies?)? This option takes up a minimum of 6 slots but I have found gas relatively easy to find. On the other had you can make/find just about everything you need for a campfire in the forest so that frees up slots in inventory, but I would need to exchange my fire axe for a pick axe to harvest stone. How does stone work? I'm assuming each stone placed in a campfire equals one spot for cooking (or do you still need a skillet/pot?), but can you resuse the stone or do you need to harvest new stone for every new campfire? Another plus with stone is I have heard you can sharpen/repair blades with stone, true? Also, ruined clothing. You can still wear it, so what's the disadvantage?

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
zyryx replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
I have heard that people are hacking weapons like the M4 into the game. First, if you loot a body how can you tell if the weapons and equipment are hacked? Second, will taking/using these hacked weapon or equipment screw up my character or get me labeled or banned from servers as a hacker myself? -
logged into a server at noon when the sun is high but to the south (the sun isn't directly overhead at noon). Was back in play space with 10 minutes!
