    will the standalone support TrackIR?

It would make no sense for there not to be support. It's running on the Real Virtuality engine, the API already exists, and frankly, I cant play without it these days. Project CARS goes unplayed vs rFactor 2 because of no TrackIR support yet

How do you scope you're head around whilst running?

The key to justifying it is using it across a range of games. I use TrackIR in a couple of flight sims and a dozen or so racing games as well as ArmA and DayZ - they're in fact a bonus. Once you get used to it, it's hard to play without one

    Standalone and Helicopters.

Get past that, it's not a dealbreaker - the throttle, especially in turbine helos, is almost a "set once" device. In ToH it's not combined with collective, it's just got three positions - OFF, IDLE and FLIGHT. It's available in the key mapping. Turbine helos generally use a governor to maintain constant RPM - like a CSU in a fixed wing aircraft. I believe piston engined helos have a linkage from collective to throttle to achieve the same goal but I can't speak from experience - I'm a fixed winged pilot and my helo flying is limited to a little stick time with mates on a few occasions.

    CZ550 Estimating Range to Target

Note I say approximately and that you can estimate range in a rudimentary fashion. I'm not saying the thing is as useful as having mildots, I'm saying it's possible with a little nous and guestimation to get a range estimate accurately enough to use the 100m zeroing steps to land a shot. I wasn't intending to walk people through it, I was intending to provide some information that some might find useful. YMMV.

    CZ550 Estimating Range to Target

The horizontal space between the vertical lines in the CZ 550 are approximately 0.4 mil apart. You can estimate range in a rudimentary fashion, knowing that. For interest's sake, the line-free gap in the centre is approximately 2 whole mils. Easy if you have a prone target at 90° to you, if it's a front on standing target you'll need to make a guess to target width.
  6. You understand that vertical mil-dots are primarily to find range so that the weapon can then be zeroed right? Remove range finders, name tags, waypoints and all other artificial range-estimating aids first.
  7. My two cents for what it's worth (based on the frequency of these threads and a floating exchange, I'm guessing about 0.0000000000003 of a cent): 1 - Replace the AS50 and M107 with the L115A2; spawn it only at helo crashes 2 - Remove the rangefinder 3 - Make all servers turn off crosshair range and name tags The Accy International is plenty good enough to allow decent snipers 1000m+ kills once you take into account the broken sight; no insta-range will limit the first-shot kills to people that take the time to learn how to use mil-dots or who don't mind the god-awful reticle of the SVD.
  8. elasticz, offtop for just a second but can I thank you and the rest of your country for your wonderful, wonderful beer? I should be over your way now, drinking beer and waiting for the Spa GP but alas my employers seem to think I should be working instead :P
  9. There's still people confused about this... In the early days there were TWO weapons with thermal sights. The AS50 TWS and the L85A2 AWS. The AS50 TWS was removed for balance reasons. About the time of 1.7.2.3 (or thereabouts) there was a bug that resulted in some people losing L85A2s from their inventories. Rocket mentioned this saying something like "there's a known issue with some weapons disappearing, we're working on it". People flew to the assumption that the L85A2 AWS had been removed for balance without reading/comprehending Rocket's words. It was fixed in the following update. tl;dr - there are thermal weapon sights in game, but not attached to AS50s.

Thermal sight needs to be removed

Yeah, I grew up in ArmA vanilla where the draw distances are longer and I like to be exact lol. Truth be told I'd rather they pissed off the AS50 in favour of my beloved green L115 but meh, thems the breaks.

Thermal sight needs to be removed

My apologies - I thought you were the OP. That'll teach me for skimming the thread. So discounting the L85 stuff and going back to the CZ - I'm not saying it's hard to aim the CZ I'm just saying the lack of rangefinding measurement with it make it inferior to the AS50. Like you say, some servers display range anyway. I don't have a rangefinder so if I use a mil-dot weapon I still use it to measure - hence my opinion that the biggest advantage of the AS50 is its reticle.

Thermal sight needs to be removed

1 - Assuming OP's scenario of stationary shooters both roughly knowing each other's location over a range of less than 800m, the biggest advantage the AS50 has is the scope - mil-dots allow much better range estimation than the CZ's chevron and ticks. I know the AS50's is slightly out of scale but using an adjusted target height takes care of that. 2 - Not everyone who disagrees with you, OP, falls into the category of duper or never-held-one. I have an L85. I haven't duped it and will not. It's the only one I've seen. If I lose it I expect to take a long time to find another. I don't think it should be removed - I think duping should be addressed. 3 - To those that say it's only use is PvP: you may be right the overwhelming majority of the time but I find it extremely useful for avoiding player contact. It also saved my arse in another way once - I was teleported to the beach by a script kiddie recently and was trekking through forest back to my preferred stomping ground at night. Was low on food to the point of losing blood in rain and darkness and the L85 found me a rabbit. Not everyone plays the game the way you do or the way that people that annoy you do. Finally, does anyone else appreciate the irony of this thread being started by someone with the following as a signature?: "There is no balance, other than the balance you will put in. I will put in the features required for you to either destroy this world into mindless PVP, or create something else. Don't look to me for that balance, because I will not give you it. -Rocket"
  13. Can't live without TrackIR. I've had it for a few years for flight sims and racing sims but I've always tipped my hat to ArmA II for including it too. In DayZ it's like it's paid for itself all over again.

    1st Person vs. 3rd Person

TrackIR? It's a head tracking device - lets you look around in Free Look mode (holding Alt and moving the mouse) while still having full controls. Mostly useful for flight sims and racing games, but bloody handy in ARMA as well.
