    put the CAMERA

ive never heard this being suggested before and personally love it! Make filmstock magazines rare though! (i remember it used to be expensive as hell in the 80s) They where awfully bulky too. +1 for adding cameras for more gameplay options.

Should admins have more options at hand?

Any Client-Server system is hackable! You can implement checksums and algorithms all you like, but it can still be spoofed and more importantly it takes up cycles. There's enough latency without having to process packets through yet another series of loops before being used, the same with memory, checking the heap or even the stack every frame is prohibitively expensive in terms of performance impact. VAC and BE both already perform checksum compares they don't operate constantly however, because to do so would impact performance as discussed, but every so often they'll issue a challenge and compare checksums, either passing you, flagging you as questionable, or if you compare to a known hash you get banned. I really don't see what more can be done! Anti-hack software is a LOT like anti-virus software, it only detects KNOWN threats, and merely flags unknown for analysis. The real scammers are the ACTUAL hackers, they develop an exploit, put it up for sale, cash in on all the plebs with more money than sense or morals, sales slow, release the exploit to BE or VAC, a ban wave occurs because the checksum tables get updated, and all those flags now match a known exploit. Then develop another exploit and put it up for sale till those tail off, and repeat ;) There's no combating it, nothing is unhackable, anything that runs code can be cracked, just look into PS3 firmware, they has an entire core dedicated to monitoring the system and as soon as linux got removed it was busted wide open. Before linux was removed hackers didn't care because they could play around with the hardware, the moment they took hackers toys away they set to work on getting them back, simply to prove it could be done.
  6. Please tell me im not the only person to question the filename? fakedayzscreenshot_zpsa44a028c.jpg Hard trollin' going on in this thread... And back to the topic at hand, Riverzakariasen, id look into MSI and their GT Dominator product line. They're above average quality (and light years better IMHO than Alienware) They are not cheap however!
  7. Damn this is a good thread! I Admittedly skimmed through a lot of posts (seemed to get bogged down between a group arguing initially and i skipped the majority) I share a LOT of the same concerns and figured things where placeholders and then DayZ became a victim of its own success (like the x86 ISA where silicon is wasted on legacy to prevent the outcry) and to a large degree DayZ has fallen victim to its own success on a numer of fronts. I agree there should be an inventory overhaul that strikes a balance between visual representation, volume and mass, however im clueless as to how that could be achieved in a way that serves both realism and enjoyment. im certainly in no position to make educated comments, UI design isn't even close to my wheelhouse. I can also see a shitstorm occurring over it because 100% happy 100% of the time is simply not feasible, and finding a balance with a majority is difficult on fundamental core gameplay aspects. I'm involved with SpaceEngineers and love that the devs are active in the community, everything seems collated and there's a real sense of ownership, and involvement but its on an entirely different scale than DayZ which brings me to Shrubs point... The reason to use reddit is simple, its governed by a majority, someone posts something and if you like it, you upvote it dont like it and you down vote it. It gives a good view on the bellcurve, ideas that the community loves get up-voted and float to the top, ideas that the community hate get down-voted to the bottom, so you can see a fairly accurate cross section of how people will react if you add a feature without having to pay a dime for the hard work of moderating everything ;) This forum is insanely busy, again because DayZ is popular, and whereas the Mod initially attracted a more mature audience because it was constructed from Arma II players, it took off and by the time the SA released, there was a much wider demographic to attempt to satisfy. So you get some really great threads on this forum, mixed in with an awful lot of a lot of shitposting, and its hard to tell one from another unless you're reading everything. Its a nightmare to moderate, and not everyone has thick skin, especially when you're working hard on creating something you consider beautiful and have a personal stake in, then putting it up for criticism. I'd love the devs to take a more personal and involved approach to these very forums, but i can understand their reticence to do so. It doesn't sting any less that i find most decent information on there, before being posted here however :( This is the best news I've heard all month! the tracker right now is a nightmare, id love to submit but trying to filter known bugs from all the junk is futile, and i don't like wasting someones time by adding to the fiasco, the only thing i do regularly on there is upvote known relevant bugs, but its like wading through a swamp! And as for the crazies who are in the "The Devs have fleeced us!" camp... Just take a look at John Romero, what project of any real significance has he worked on since Ion Storm? A games "Hype" will get you far, a reliable reputation will get you a WHOLE LOT FURTHER. Every job Dean has later in his career will be referenced from how this project went. Reputation in this industry means waaay more than making money off a single title, Romero is an easy target, but the industry is full of cases of vapour ware, insane time scales, and fallen rock-stars Peter Molyneux for instance (syndicate, populous, theme park, dungeon master) I've not trusted him since he released Black and White, tried Fable and was not a fan, Now that i think on it, I've disliked everything hes done since Bullfrog! The industry is littered with these stories. I wish Dean all the success in the world, and don't envy the pressure that's on him one bit! And the commentators shitposting about the mans vacation time? To those i say "before judging a man, first walk a mile in their shoes... and then? who cares? you're a mile away and you have their shoes!" Overall a very high quality thread! im glad i didnt miss this one! BEANS!

This was thoroughly tested, i tried a splint and even used up an auto-injector, didn't make a difference, even tried different DPI settings on my mouse (200, 2000, 4000 and 6400dpi) i can manage to handle it at low dpi but thats just me compensating for the sway manually. Zoomed in at a target 100m out i get several yards sway on all axes, further out than that and it amplifies significantly, its like trying to LRS after a long distance sprint (which is fine if you have indeed been sprinting) but this is from a full rest ;) Sometimes its fine (once straight after a relog, but I've tested enough now to know that that was merely coincidental) but the majority of the time its all over the place. This is with mouse6, and 3 separate keys on a g13 bound to hold breath, and pressing combinations thereof. Before when you held 2 or more hold breath keys it would diminish the effect, but when it goes wonky this time, it doesn't make a dent. The only reason i extensively tested was because i had a fully geared toon stuck with a mosin/lrs/compensator combo (all in pristine condition) and a pristine PU scope in my backpack. Even iron-sighted the sway is insane.

Yeah, rarity just seems to be increased, I've just burned through 8 full stacks stuck inside a jail, zombies rushed me upstairs and seemed to keep respawning, i burned through all ammo id collected headshotting, they didn't seem to end, just wave after wave, id get a second to bandage and reload all 8 mags and another wave would flood through :D Wound up out of ammo and my primary (mosin) was worthless, there's just too many inbound to be able to reload fast enough, i wound up dead from trying to melee with a fire axe and barricading my escape with corpses :) The difficulty has definitely been cranked up a few notches in this patch! Whole lot of fun though :D Yeah, the sway is insane, i was fully healed and rested, LRS is neigh on impossible to use currently, prone, couched and standing, coupled with zombies infinitely re-spawning the mosin is fairly worthless, it doesn't chamber enough rounds to be anywhere near effective enough for clearance, currently looking for an AK variant to get away from using it as quickly as possible.
  10. I've seen a few arguments about adding things to the game and getting those ideas shot down with "the average person wouldn't know how to do X" (where X could be making radios out of coconuts for instance) Then the riposte of "If you survived the outbreak then surely you're already smarter than the average bear." This got me thinking about the fact you MAY NOT even be a survivor! Lets review the evidence. You awaken with out a clue carrying only a flashlight - this seems an unlikely scenario for your average outbreak survivor. Your ethnicity is questionable - how many of the playable chars look like they're residents of Chenarus? There are certain buildings and locations you cannot get into - whats hidden in those buildings? Banditry seems to be the most common playstyle, people kill each other without a second thought. This all got me thinking down the roads that I've been drugged, and dropped off on the shores of some shitty quarantine zone, stripped of everything and given a new shiny flashlight. Roofied and left to survive for someones twisted amusement. Those buildings i cant get into? i bet they're housing servers and telecom gear, fed from remote cameras dotted around Chenarus. Feeding into the central hub located at Green Mountain as a way of transmitting outside the zone, which is why the place is so freaky. Perhaps I'm some kind of Criminal! Maybe i was a murderer and got shipped over here as some kind of newfangled justice, which is why banditry comes so easily. Maybe i said the wrong thing publicly about my Government, took a hero's stand against my corporate empire, got doped up and shipped out to experience a scenario where there is NO government, i tried to be a hero in real life and this was my reward from the powers that be. Maybe I'm not just paranoid in thinking I'm always being watched, because I've always got a camera pointed squarely at me, modern society watching me, positively ravenous at the thought of me receiving some entertaining justice. Head north or east enough and things come to an abrupt alt, you get to see the exclusion zone, where society retreated and demolished everything between us and them, just far enough that you'll die of dehydration or run out of fuel long before you ever see the walls around us :p I can see a modern distopia all betting on how long i'll survive, talking about my shitty day around the water cooler in their offices all around the globe, phones going nuts the moment i break a leg and need to crawl around gathering sticks for a splint. This is why i hear cans opening, and zombies moaning where there are none, it to get me shifting along, frighten me into action and prevent the audience back home getting bored with me just sitting around drinking a canteen. Its why there are no vehicles yet (the exclusion zone is still being widened to prevent future escape) Those other people you see glitching out? thats just a side effect of the neurotoxin that you received after your trial. Died inexplicably on a stairwell or in a room that was otherwise safe? that's just you getting gassed for being BORING! The bastards just reset you back to the coast for round two! All these things you think are bugs are just part of the plan to keep you entertaining the masses. Just like the Roman empire threw Gladiatorial sports events to keep the masses amused and apeased and prevent too many questions being asked. You are NOT A SURVIVOR, you're merely a pawn to keep the plebs working!

  13. Haha! I just grew up watching The running man, battle royale, playing Smash TV and reading waaay too many shitty sci-fi novels. Then looking at history and modern society, Big Brother always on TV and the rise of Reality TV in general, cheap to shoot trash that passes as entertainment nowadays, and followed through to its logical conclusion. If a company thought it could get away with it i don't doubt for a second they would be dosing criminals with Scopolamine and shipping them out to TV island for an entertaining death. International Governments would also love the idea of shipping out dissidents and criminals, it solves the prison population and budget issues, gets rid of "terrorists" (whatever this weeks definition of terrorist happens to be) and brings in revenue, keeps a populace entertained and therefore under control. The only downside would be the bleeding heart "Human rights" types. But lets face it, they've been unable to stop the march of Guantanamo, so they really don't pose much of a threat. It also solves international terrorism, if Al Queda sees a country publicly executing their own citizens? they'd be like "Screw tangling with those psychos." The only downside is your average joe and public outcry, would people stand for it? Would they tune in? Guaging by some of the messed up stuff ive seen people do in DayZ id say that a lot of people wouldnt have an issue though :D

    MMO7 Mouse issue

I run an MMO7 and G13 gameboard setup through the same hub. Whenever im playing DayZ and only DayZ It seems to reset my mouse. I'll be running along and hear the dooDOOP noise of windows ejecting and reconnecting the USB and my profile sets to default (photoshop bindings) :/ Doesn't do this with the G13 connected to the same hub and after hours of testing on other games none of these seem to do it :) Oddest bug I've encountered thus far. I can't even duplicate it reliably, it just happens at completely random times. At first i thought it was hardware related, possibly a loose connection so i stripped it down (a nightmare of a job, there are several boards to strip out to get down to the baseboard with the USB interface) Checked everything with my multimeter, checked the USB wire through a range of kinks and bends, nothing out of the ordinary. The upside is i got the opportunity to clean the internals cause its a few years old now and was needing done anyway. I've even tried running on a different USB port, with and without being externally hubbed, tried unplugging all other non essential devices (ext hard drives, thumbdrives, the G13 etc) and it still randomly happens. Tried different driver versions, still the same. Some sessions i can play for hours without it happening, sometimes it will happen several times, and there's no discernible pattern. Sometimes i'll be pressing a button, sometimes i wont even be moving or touching anything, theres no consistency between events either, like zooming in or using a firearm. its simply random! Anyone else using one of these and experiencing similar? I dont feel its prudent to submit a bug on the tracker at this point, its not really all that big of a deal, just wondering if anyones experiencing the same kind of thing?

Should admins have more options at hand?

Any game is hackable, given time and effort (or in the case of the majority, "money") there is absolutely no way to prevent hackers from exploiting, the best you can do is patch (and in some cases even this isnt realistically possible) and issue global bans on known exploits. This takes down a single wave, till somone sits down, works out a way around the patch and develops a new hack and you're back to square one where you need to re-issue another round of patches and update the detection software to ban the next wave. Repeat ad nauseum. This is exactly what BE, VAC and BI are doing, its all you CAN do. After the initial code leak we saw a massive influx of hacks, now a few months on and several updates later, most of them are benign. I've not had my weapon removed, my inventory stripped or seen anyone i couldn't kill since the latest patch. Which shows me that at least people are on top of things. All I've seen recently is ESP and Telefags, but at least i have a fighting chance of dropping the bastards now. Things HAVE been improving, but its only a matter of time before the next wave is inbound, and then its back to waiting for more updates and banwaves. Same as EVERY PC game EVER. Back on topic: I believe admins should be given way more power, even something as simple as being able to toggle an overlay of nameplates and being able to issue bans. I understand that this is open to abuse, however, its a small community and if a server is abusing then it should be named and shamed, letting legit players avoid them. A strong community should be able to self govern and police itself.

    we need more distinctive characters!

Hair is set that way because its low poly and low animation, therefore it doesn't use up much in the way of computing horsepower. As for identifying someone you play with, simple! just use either hats or shoes, any time i squad up we stick to voice comms, update positions and all wear something similar and distinguished so we can recognize each other and hold fire till we get a voice confirmation. We initially squad up, decide on a feature (Hold fire on anyone shoeless/wearing a beret/radar/yellow raincoat etc) then move out and keep each other updated on the environment, call out spots, call out present locations, directions, shots fired and the like, have a strat meeting before going into a town so we know roughly how things are going to play, where we need to hit, likely locations of all players in our squad/unit/team or whatever, fall back positions, rendezvous points. Keeps us safe mostly (unless there's a breakdown in comms coupled with people being out of position or going rambo) and you begin to function more efficiently, its fun being able to hit a city, grab up supplies, then safely fall back to the rendezvous and share gear round a camp fire, someone goes on a bottle run, food run, ammo run, med run and a couple of misc runners, everyone meets back safe and the entire squad gets what they need :) More fun still is arguing over who's going to do what, "HELL NO! you where on Overwatch last run, your hitting up the police station in Berezino this time numbnuts!" I love playing lone wolf and soloing but there's a lot to be said for effective communication and running with a squad, and its a whole lot more fun when things go completely pete tong and everyone gets wiped, gear is transitional but mocking a team mate for a cock up last forever :D

    Rookie mistake, rookie question

I have no anecdotal evidence because if its less than pristine i just leave them. I'm just taking onboard a few threads on Reddit, these routinely crop up, but its hard to filter out genuine truth from complete morons. They crop up frequently enough for me to justify taking caution, i probably should harvest a few in different states and gauge them towards the north star, just to see if there really is a calibration difference! Its just a simple ranger compass so there's no declination setting to compensate for the variable difference between magnetic and true north (for instance there's a declination of +10degrees and 34mins East in Moscow or -3degrees 20mins West in Glasgow) i don't imagine this will matter in DayZ however as i doubt it takes longitude into account. Also if your running, pull up your inventory, right click your compass and click "inspect" it lets you see the direction your traveling without needing to equip it as normal. Useful if you're headed to a town or into a walker infested area and need to be weapons ready ;)

    Rookie mistake, rookie question

You dont really need a compass ;) Clouds in Chenarus always travel from West to the East so you can work out North and South from that. Or if its night then you can navigate by the stars just Follow the two stars from Ursa Major to Ursa Minors tail and you'll find the north star (Polaris) People often think that the north star is the brightest star in the night sky (at least thats what we got told in school at around age 6 or 7) but that's actually Sirius and that tends to move seasonally so its fairly useless as a navigational aid. Once you learn landmarks and become familiar with the map, the compass is essentially useless (save for giving out target bearings to a squad) but if its not pristine then it will deviate from magnetic north by a variable margin. just find your direction focus on the horizon and run!

    frustrated with death

sounds like a sync issue to me, a miss-communication between the server and client regarding player positioning, once the server updates your client you wind up ripped through walls, falling from buildings and the like, they happen to me infrequently and if i peg it back to the place where i died i generally find my corpse outside a building on the ground or in some cases i figure I've clipped through the floor. Its a known issue on the bug tracker. If its affecting you frequently all i can suggest is giving it an upvote :)
  22. um... im in the UK and seeing servers maxed out presently (23:45 26/7/2014) even HC's, and my filter is set to a max of 120ping several of those in France! I think you have a problem somewhere Pilgrim :o
  23. http://youtu.be/csyL9EC0S0c?t=15m The entire talk is very good imho, but his talk on waterfall had me in stitches :D
  24. As a gamer in general i tend to crank shit up to 11 (more often than not to find out that 11 is really just 10 and you need to actually complete a game once in order to really unlock 11 and i loathe that bullshit) so I'm not typically to shy away for "hardcore." That being said, i play good old "regular" DayZ for one reason and one reason alone and i quote Zero here: It was certainly true of the mod and it still holds true in the standalone. Don't get me wrong, i don't suffer from motion sickness or anything like that, i just find it awkward and unpleasurable, and this is with the bob cranked to GTFO mode, its still not pleasant. I know I'm certainly not alone in this boat, some people dig it, personally like a multitude of others, I do not. It has nothing to do with "immersion" for me, i feel just as immersed in third person as i do in first, but i grew up playing dig dug and adventure on a VCS so i had to develop the imagination to fill in a lot of the blanks. Would a naming convention change things? i highly doubt it, just take a look at the mod where its clearly noted as "3pp OFF" and you'll see servers just as barren, naming has very little to do with it imho, its a niche group who actively enjoy the 1pp experience, always was, always will be. A rose by any other name is still just a spade and so on. If there was a 3pp mode that was actually "hardcore" in terms of reduced loot tables, faster and smarter zombies and increased burnout of hunger and thirst levels with smaller stomach capacity, no player crosshair and increased damage rates for instance, id be all over that like a dog eating beetroot! That's the only feasible instance i can see there being a change of nomenclature, and I'd most likely be in a niche with empty servers because LOL-NOOBS-2HARDCORE4U-MLG-PRO-GET-REKT or something. But id have the option to play the way i wanted to play, so screw it, id be way too busy playing to complain about people not being forced to play the way i personally enjoy playing, because i understand that people are all very different and have just as much right to play their way, irrespective of naming conventions.
