This is possibly the best system for defibrilators I have seen explained. In no way does this mean that I like the idea, because I don't, but it's well crafted. It certainly would not be a spammable option, and would basically allow a group of players that fought off another group to win++.

I'm sorry but I feel like you missed the point of the post. There will still be leaderboards. This is completely separate. This is an in-game system. This is not a tracking system. This is a atmosphere / sandbox system. Leaderboards are out-of-game. Leaderboards are so you can stroke your ego while away from the game. This idea is for in-game ego stroking. This is for people who wish to immerse themselves in a deep game. Regarding your reason for not wanting this... If you run away from a horde of zombies, the zombies have won. Why should you get teeth that you can show off to others? You just let a bunch of zombies beat you. Maybe they should have your teeth instead! You are absolutely correct that the amount of teeth you collect would be less than the amount of zombies you kill, but if you have 100 teeth that means you killed 100 + zombies AND clearly won because you could pull the teeth out AND you are a certifiable badass... just because.

Awesome, thanks for clarifying. You are right that there will be out of game leaderboards and things of that nature, which will be fantastic, and I wasn't trying to say we could replace it in any way. I just like things that add to the mood, and this just seems right to me. Additionally, when I go into my pack I want to have a reminder of the zombies I killed and spent the time to rip a tooth out. Once the debug window goes away there will be no more reminder of how much ass you have been kicking!

Yeah, ears work well too, but there is something I like about teeth that I just can't put my finger on.. maybe that they don't rot? Maybe that you can polish them to be beautiful? Maybe that pulling out a tooth seems more visceral than cutting off an ear? I dunno, but I like ears too :)

The start of this game isn't intense enough for you? I'm sorry. And to think that people were saying that starting with a just a flashlight would kill the popularity of the game. Why not just start you with nothing, in the middle of a forest, bleeding and surrounded by zombies? Would that be intense enough?

My opinion on the matter is that weapons should be like this (0 is common 10 is exceedingly rare) melee - 0 shotgun - 1 handguns - 1/2 hunting rifles - 2/3 Military (Russian) - 5/6 Military (US) -7/8 Sniper Riflles - 7/8/9/10 depending on the gun NVG, Thermal - 12 :) Once duping is killed there would be a lot less of the game we see frequently (Hardcore FPS), and more of the game it's meant to be (Immersive social experiment.)

Hells yes! Collectibles galore plz. :)) I honestly don't care how far this goes, but I do think that keeping the mood focused on horror should be a priority. I love running in the dark with a flashlight. I love flares illuminating undead walkers. I love the idea of ripping out a tooth so you have proof you are fighting the infection or that you have no qualms about killing another person to stay alive. If you have any other ideas for items that could add to the mood, increase potential sandboxy interactions, or anything like that please post here!

Of course I played Fallout, and I cannot say it had nothing to do with my idea ;) I think you may have missed my point that there are two different teeth, zombie teeth and human teeth. I do not believe that there should be any official currency, but these items could be used for that purpose. They could also be used for games, or testing people. I have no idea how many creative ways they will be used, but putting things like this in the game to facilitate creative playing should be a goal if this is to remain a sandbox. Some things should have no 'survival' use, but instead should be present to provide mood. Also, I don't think murder is going to ever stop being an option... Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not sure what you mean. How would teeth get in the ways of stat tracking? While there will obviously be stat tracking for leaderboards, I don't expect that IN GAME there will be any sort of kill counter. As with all my suggestions, the most important part of this is atmosphere. This is a horror game. Horror is nothing without atmosphere. Lovecraft knows this, and anyone that reads horror realizes it. Here is a quote of his regarding such things: “A certain atmosphere of breathless and unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces must be present; and there must be a hint, expressed with a seriousness and portentousness becoming its subject, of that most terrible conception of the human brain - a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space .... Therefore we must judge a weird tale not by the author's intent, or by the mere mechanics of the plot; but by the emotional level which it attains at its least mundane point... The one test of the really weird is simply this - whether or not there be excited in the reader a profound sense of dread, and of contact with unknown spheres and powers; a subtle attitude of awed listening, as if for the beating of black wings or the scratching of outside shapes and entities on the known universe's utmost rim.”

Yeah, I agree. The most fun I've had were personal encounters with people. Using direct chat or throwing explosives to fuck with people is second to none on the fun meter. I love watching people, stalking, see how they interact with others. Are they survivors or bandits or murders? (Yes there really are 3 groups.) I honestly think that murderers are just uninspired idiots who should probably be playing another game. If they aren't endangering you, and you don't need what they have, INCREASE ATMOSPHERE. I promise, you will have a much better time! I stalked a guy after his friend shot at me, soon after my buddy killed his friend and I patched up. He was hiding in a corner of the Berenzino grocery shooting rounds off at nothing. I could just imagine him at home, heart racing, adrenaline flowing, and hand shaking. I come around a corner and he shoots off 5 shots nowhere near me - but he couldn't stop shooting. I had a friend provide suppressing fire, told him to 'come out with his hands up', and threw a grenade outside the kill zone just for effect. If you are 'bored' enough to kill freshies, you are bored enough to get creative with your gameplay. Or you can just be a murderer and collect moar killz. -
I don't know about any of this, but I sure hate when the server gets reset and there is no warning..

OP thanks for bringing social conduct into the discussion. The mindset from every other FPS most of us have played is to shoot as soon as possible, but the videos I have seen and experiences I have had that are interactive and more along the lines of role playing have been the most cherished. I love riding through a city blasting ice cream truck music, watching people until they prove their mettle, or convincing another player to not shoot me in the face. It's the best part of the game for me, and as the game matures there will be more of the moments like these: -
This has happened to me before while driving, but ALL the vehicles on the server were gone. I always record all the save coordinates of all my vehicles on a google doc, so after another server reset I checked back to where they were. POOF, they were back like magic.

This is better placed on the ARMA boards, as they are the ones who control the weapon functionality.

It's not impossible. If the players believe it should be there Rocket may be convinced to pursue similar options. If the player disconnects before a timeout, put a zombie there in it's place. If the zombie dies, update the hive, kill the player. It is likely true that a straight 'disconnect timer' would require BI to do some work, but there is always more than one way to crack an egg. -

OP, thanks for the long detailed post. I love reading stuff like this because it shows that people care about the mod and want to improve it. However, I think that you, and most people, are over thinking/engineering this, including Ander's radio tower. From all the posts I have seen I have consolidated my own version of how to deal with ghosting and help minimize server hopping. Solutions to Ghosting: 1) Disconnect timer (30-60 seconds) 2) NO DISCONNECT IF YOU ARE IN SHOCK 3) If someone uses a weapon within 100-200m of you, +10-20 seconds on your disconnect timer. I have a different opinion on how to rid the game of server hopping entirely, which I won't go into here. I also LOVE the idea of radio towers, but only for the suppression of ZED spawning. -

I agree that hiding bodies is bad news, but while it's a feature I love hiding bodies that have high end loot that I won't use.... because nobody else will either! -

Thanks for the link, that was very interesting! I don't agree with the premise whatsoever, but at it made me really like the idea or portable radio towers suppressing zombie spawns. Now that is the way to do it! Add anti zed towers that players can setup so that they can liberate towns! With that in place you could make Cherno a party zone! -

I think you're completely correct, and that this seems to be a solution to ghosting. I do not agree with the 30 second timer fixing most of the problems. You also should not be able to logout AT ALL if you have shock. I also think that 60 seconds is more in line with how time flows in DayZ - faster than you think, especially when you are engaging a patient player. I honestly would prefer that the logout timer would increase if bullets were being fired in your direction. Example: Start at 30 seconds. If a weapon is used near you add +10 seconds (100m would be good to avoid snipers keeping people from logging in buildings they have no hope of hitting). This would make escaping an engagement nearly impossible and it would add stress to the situation as you watch your logout timer going up instead of down leading players to abort the disconnect and deal with the situation! -

While I like the idea of portable powered equipment and making progress towards creating bases and other ideas, this seems like a convoluted way to avoid server hopping. Once you have put in more than two or three hours with a character it should be temporarily locked to a server. Want to change servers? Wait until tomorrow. Server shutdown or restart? Let people change servers. I also see the idea backfiring depending on how large the radius is. A player that spawns not expecting to look for a camp may be clued in that a camp is near. It would not take very long to locate it once you know it is nearby. -

I applaud you for playing this as a young gamer, it is certainly not a walk in the park! Since the average age of gamers is about 30, you might find it hard to find anyone under 20 that plays this type of game. The experience continues to get better with other people and becomes less frustrating at the same time! Good luck. -
It's amazing how entertaining not being able to see is, and how trivial stuff in this game is so tense! Just wait until you meet up with people that are stalking you!
