In regards to a number of forum posts and discussions I have seen in-game, I think that there needs to be some goals that help make survival more enjoyable. Survival is the ultimate goal, which ultimately makes people leave the chaos of the cities in search of their own havens. If we look at Maslow's Hiearchy we see that Dayz starts you at the bottom, and with a little luck and skill you can take care of your physiological needs within a couple hours. What if the game also incorporated the next level fully, that of Safety. What players end up doing is using whatever game mechanics they can to achieve this level of fulfillment - usually by building tent camps with all of their goods stored in a secret location or hiding their helicopters off map. Wouldn't it be interesting if we could improve on this to create real safety (albeit a tenuous one.) What if players could band together to restart the power plants at the major cities? Obviously this would take a significant effort involving the fixing of vehicles to transport parts and fuel, regular runs to collect wood or coal or other fuel to power the city. Why would people want to do this? Give them a good reason! Here are some possibilities: 1) Zombies will not spawn in a lit city 2) Increased spawn times 3) Factories can be used to create things 4) Atmosphere 5) Gear is safe from theft while there is power in the city (when power goes out riot ensues) An additional benefit is that survivors would flock to cities that are lit, and revel in the safety. Why is this a benefit? Because where survivors flock, bandits will follow. Bandits may even start their own cities so that they too can have a safe base of operation, but I expect they would rather hide in the darkness with NV goggles, waiting to pick off stragglers or plan an attack on the city. Sure, you might not be out gaining loot from the local military base, but you will have fulfilled the goals of the next level of the Maslow pyramid: security of body, employment, resources, morality, health, and property. I understand that this might be something impossible on 50 person servers, but it would be fun to have with ARMA3!

Some simple googling got me this: "As an example, on average a normal, healthy individual who donates a unit of blood (about 450 ml or ¾ pint) will fully recuperate from the blood loss in four to six weeks.". If humans have ~5 liters of blood, it would take 10*5 or 50 weeks to regen your full blood supply. If this drug increases this by 4x we would be down to about 12 weeks.... or 1000 blood per week, or 150 blood per day (ish). All of this is rough math with very little research and/or calculations. Would this drug be worth it? But wait a second. Surely getting to 0 blood is not actually at 0 blood because a human stops being conscious after losing (googles...) 40% of their blood! So if instead we can lose 2 liters of blood, that would be 4*5 = 20 / 4 = 5 weeks to regen your needed supply or 2400 blood per week of 350 blood per day (ish). Hmm.. no, still not really worth it. Although that is better than 0... hmmm...

I love what this would do for the atmosphere of the game! +1 Recording some blood curdling screams and playing them when a player is being eaten alive would be so appropriate. Also considering how silent the world is with machinery and electric power off, it would be fantastic to be able to hear other players over a long distance. I believe that the screaming should also attract more zombies, but I'm a glutton for punishment.

Nice I like what you have said in here, especially all the detail you go into. I like the idea of these things being useable in cities that are already present. I don't believe that there needs to be new cities built, instead there should be a goal of restoring the ones we have! I detailed this a bit here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=13084 But I would love to hear your thoughts.

That's not an opinion' date=' that's a fact. You've added nothing. Good work. Of course, the zombies appear to melee, so.. what the engine supports in this regard is irrelevant and it's clear that Rocket could find a clever way of doing it if he so chose. [/quote'] There are lots of options for melee, it just seems that some people cannot get over the fact that this is a simulation with high realism. If I have a hatchet and I am chased by two zombies I am going to attack them. They might kill me, but I'm going to get it my all. I also might get a disease, but at least I didn't die! This is a survival game, let people use their survival instincts which includes scratching out zombie eyeballs with their bare hands even if it means losing 10k blood and breaking an arm. That is fantastic. Thank you for sharing!

THIS /signed There is no question in my mind whether there should be melee weapons, and I think this should include fists. You should never be without a weapon, and the weapon you use should never be without consequence. Use a gun? It's loud. Use a silenced gun? It's hard to find ammo and it's weak. Use a melee weapon? YOU'RE IN MELEE RANGE OF ZOMBIES. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO BE. Use your fists? You're pretty much f'd, but better to go out fighting.

Dying of thirst in a rainstorm next to a well
jesquik replied to Slamz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Or you could just let people drink from water pumps. There is no reason this should not be allowed, although there probably should be less water pumps available (maybe only in mountain villages) because of ground contamination from all the dead bodies! I appreciate that there is added stress from not starting with much, but if you make it to a town and safely approach a water pump you should be able to drink. -
I'm going to keep watching for reports of zombies instant spawning. If this is the case, I'm going to wait to play until a server side patch is implemented. Thanks for the heads up everyone!

Love it. Definitely think that the side chat gives players the thrill of interacting with humans without the in game need to actually meet up. This helps the lone wolfs feel like they aren't alone while they exploit the game world safely without any risk. If a lone wolf saw no chat and heard no human voice they would get lonely infinitely quicker.

I had been thinking about how hydration works in this game and find it particularly easy to get enough soda so that you never need to drink and refill water. I searched for similar topics and found this: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=8197 However, beyond the idea of having soda give you significantly less hydration, it should increase the rate you get thirsty for hours (Caffeine has a 5 hour half-life.) As a positive, soda should decrease the rate you get hungry for the same amount of time. Beyond this change in the mechanic, I feel like drinks should spawn much less frequently giving everyone a reason to seek out wells or ponds to fill their jugs. As people have stated in other forums, ponds should also have a high rate of infection which would require antibiotics. A main reason for this is that smaller towns with wells would be desirable travel locations even if the looting is low. Supermarkets would spawn sodas but sooner or later consumable liquids would run out in the main cities. I have never had an issue with thirst or hunger and I feel like I should. Make certain areas hot spots for food and drink. Supermarkets are good for everything, obviously, but make farms (animals) and water pumps important - something worth killing over.

A new 'status' to encourage cooperation
jesquik replied to ScienceCow's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Woah, woah. You actually might be onto something here... could we get some feedback from lonewolf players? I'm not wanting to make things easier or force playstyles, but adding some psychological tension would be awesome. Something related to being around people, that could be medicated if you want to lonewolf. Thoughts? I've been playing for 4 weeks and I'm 100% Lone Wolf avoiding players and hot spots like the plague, but I have noticed when I'm playing I subconsciously feel the need to see other humans, I get the urge to "creep", get the binoculars out and look for signs of life. I don't want actual contact because I don't trust anybody anymore, but I am human and this Mod pulls human emotions out and dumps them on my character. I could easily believe that if my current character survived for a long time it would start acting like a castaway, talking to scarecrows or animals, hallucinating, talking out load, etc. So yes, medication to deal with this is definitely worth considering. Great insight! This may have sold me on the idea. -
While I like the idea of starting a player with only a flashlight, I vehemently oppose the fact that a flashlight and pistol cannot coexist. It would be great if you could use both a pistol and flashlight and just have NO iron sights since you cannot hold the gun with both hands. This would still make the G17 useful with it's on gun flashlight, but allow most people to have a viable flashlight option.
-
This is huge, as often carrying multiple weapons to hedge your bets on ammo is critical. My biggest peeve at the moment as far as space goes is that flashlights count as a pistol... especially after the gamma nerf.

I am not very familiar with the engine or it's capabilities, so I'm glad you provided this input. I don't think it's impossible or I wouldn't have posted it to torture everyone with a good idea. I probably would be able to help code it, as I code for a living, but I honestly wouldn't know where to start and I just got interested in this mod this week :)

Anyone playing less or completely stopping until the new DayZ patch comes out?
jesquik replied to hazychestnutz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I doubt I will take any substantial break even though I am very excited for zombies to not see through walls! The server side vehicle fixes are also going to be fantastic. I haven't played with those changes yet. -
[Report] Spawned in Wilderness/Debug Forest/Endless Ocean
jesquik replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Yup, Happened to me again :) I think I noticed that this has happened to me twice after I have changed my uniform. Once to some civilian garb and the other time to a camo suit. Don't know if this has anything to do with it though. I hope this is getting serious attention, this will keep most new players from ever playing again... I'm already hooked ;) -

20 words or less: Super-Low Humanity Detection
jesquik replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
YES However, the way humanity is assigned needs to be addressed. You should receive humanity for killing those with low humanity, and lose lots of humanity for killing those with high humanity. I'm unsure what players should start with for humanity. It's not about the bandit having a heart beat, it's your own heartbeat increasing because you are getting anxious and filled with adrenaline. -
All items gone, Teleported to unknown location
jesquik replied to deadzen's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Yup, this happened to me as well. I spawned swimming in the water after trying to switch servers due to the lag beast. I never spawned in a forest and eventually drowned, or died, or some combination of the two. I had just got an AK with Kobra sightings too... :P -
Did i just have a heartattack? (died for no apparant reason)
jesquik replied to Oddball_E8's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
No, this is most certainly an issue with the server or hackers. I guess I'm incredibly unlucky because of the 6 characters I have had, they have been insta killed 3 times. Two of those times has been a mass heart attack where the entire server dies for apparently no reason. One time I just dropped to -14k blood while prone next to a fence. I know it wasn't a player because I had useful equipment which I luckily spawned near and recovered on my 6th and current character. I also have decided not to play until 1.7.1 comes out, maybe that will fix some of these issues. The server that keeps track of character deaths should easily be able to tell when an entire serve is wiped and reverse the deaths. I can understand that bugs happen and single players die, but when someone is able to script an entire server to wipe all players I am amazed that there is no protections in place.
