Good read and well played. I have had a bunch of peaceful, although rather tense, encounters and they can make your heart race. They leave you thinking about the other player a lot more than KoS does after you put someone down.
-
Great story. I am not a KOS kind of guy, but anyone walking IN TO a gun fight unarmed is either too crazy to trust or playing you for a fool. They need to be held up or put down. GG all involved, I am sure you left some people stinging from that encounter haha.

Thankyou Gews, I meant 600m maximum effective range. I typed that reply on my phone and edited 2 or 3 times trying to fix everything. The restricting factor between the two is the optic Attachments for both weapons.I know when we got Acogs at work our "effective range" increased by 100m. I am not sure if this is what is trying to be reflected in DayZ but the M4 does seem a lot worse than it really is without all the fruit hanging off it. I don't feel M4 is a particularly decent item in game, other than looking super bad ass. The .22 rifle taking 15 shots to kill someone at 50m is another good example of broken weapons.

In a GAME where body armour is not really something you have to contend with in a realistic way, the M4 should be a fairly decent killing machine. A short 5.56mm Carbine or rifle is NEVER going to have the effective range or mid to Long range accuracy of an SKS or similar. The M4 is a popular choice worldwide in its many guises, and used by a tonne of armed forces, as it is extremely modular and can be adapted to a lot of different situations. It is lightweight, ammo is lightweight and compact and a lot can be carried, 5.56mm causes less Colatteral damage as it is less likely than 7.62mm to pass through a Human body and continue on and hit another one. It is also less likely to penetrate cover and armor, but a hit on the human body causes a lot of damage as the round will expand and tumble inside, lacking the mass and energy to pass right through. As a result a single shot within the effective range (usually 300m for a 5.56mm rifle) is likely to cause significant damage but is not a guaranteed to kill even to vital areas, it will mess you up but not necessarily kill you, luckily most 5.56mm weapons have a good rate of fire and less recoil which makes them easier to control when landing the multiple shots necessary to kill someone. This is why M4's excel at short range, and they are easier to manipulate in tight environments. On the other hand you have an SKS, used in real life as a battle rifle and designated marksman rifle. it will inherently be more accurate than a 5.56mm weapon, and accurate over greater ranges, an SKS should be effective to 800m and able to harass outside that range, a 5.56mm rifle to 300m or 400m and able to harass outside that. A hit from a 7.62mm round will devestate a human target, but if they are lucky it can pass right though a fleshy area without losing much velocity or expanding which will result in less damage. This will typically occur at closer range, the upside being it will still wreck people at longer ranges, and defeat armor at short AND long range vs a 5.56mm. Ammo is bigger and heavier and less can be carried, an SKS is unwieldy in close quarters and not modular so cannot be adapted to different body types or tactical situations. It has a lower rate of fire and a smaller magazine as well. At the end of the day, in real life, there is no ultimate weapon or ammo types, hence why armed forces equip their soldiers with a variety of each, which changes to suit any given tactical situation if planning allows it. IN DAYZ, for me it is the SKS all day, it seems more accurate and seems to do more damage, though I have little experience with the M4, I have successfully repelled attacks and defeated enemies at range with the SKS, and killed snipers from 300-400m with one shot using a PU2. Ideally all the weapons will one day accurately reflect their RL counterparts with regards to damage and accuracy, then we will be able to perfectly select which weapons we want/need as they will all be better suited to a particular more than others. The M4 has somehow (I blame ovies and video games) developed a reputation as the ultimate weapon which sadly isn't the case, although it is amazing, there is no one ultimate weapon. In this case, with Day Z, the SKS is a better all round weapon in my honest opinion. PS. I am no weapon or science expert, but I have some pretty extensive firearms experience using a lot of different weapons, as I am an infantryman in the army. The 5.56 vs 7.62mm debate is ENDLESS, so is the 'Why don't we use epic M4's" debate.

I can't stop killing fresh spawns.

I want to know where he got 300+ mosin rounds, and where he stores 300 shirts in his inventory! I am sure it is a troll. Let us all know what Server you are on and we will come see if its true or not. Unfortunately when a heap of people act like this it turns off the new players who quickly grow tired of having their time wasted. When enough people play a game and act like total cock bags it can ruin a game, when a game already has enough hurdles to overcome and a lot of work left its a shame people like you may well be contributing to it failing through causing it to lose players. In summary, you are a real piece of shit player. -
Actually it's not a flank its a withdrawal and counter attack. I read what you said, there are times when a direct action flank in contact is the most effective option, however the OP said he didn't know where the enemy was or how many there were so a flanker is difficult. As I said, personally I would break Contact and withdraw, observe from a distance while concealed, then Counterattack after the enemy let their guard down or the tactical situation allowed me to get the jump on them, ideally an attack from behind. In situations where you can win or flank Without a 99% chance of death, then yes you are correct that is your best bet. Just last night my mate was stalked and ambushed in a police station, Instead of just running to join the fight I concealed myself, waited out, counter ambushed and killed both enemies who were massively geared up compared to me. Your suggestion and tactics were not bad, just your attitude toward other players as meagre and not worthy.
-
Don't look down brit, your a long way up there on your high horse. A tactical withdrawal will give you the chance to jump your enemy again after you regather yourself. Going toe to toe would result on death, 2 friends killed, and unknown number of enemies with good gear, and he sounds like a new player. Withdraw yes, but don't disappear. Reassess the situation, return to action and regain the initiative when your enemies guard is down.
-
Nothing wrong with a fighting withdrawal, in a game where a surprise attack or ambush can allow one person to kill a large group, I don't blame you. You lived to fight another day and to keep your gear to help your mates when they respawn. No point dying for nothing. I don't fight unless I can get the drop on someone and I always have an exit strategy, it's not a TDM its all about survival.

I have only killed a few other survivors in game, but each time it was completely justified, but I can see how you would feel bad, especially knowing how much it hurts you and your mates being KoS. My Body count. Number 1. Raiding the police station in Svetlogarsk, as we were leaving my brother went first and ran head on into a guy sneaking upstairs with an M4 at the ready, luckily my Bro hit his trigger first and put half a mag into the guy an killed him. He pulled back to reload and I took point, moving downstairs and aiming my sawn off 12g at the front door incase the corpse upstairs had friends. Within 30 seconds a second man came running into the station with his weapon up, only to be greeted by some serious buckshot. Number 2. I was a fresh spawn on this beach, literally 30 seconds old, and I was attacked by a zombie, which I managed to punch to death. I ripped up some rags and started bandaging when a guy appeared out of some nearby bushes, a witness to the fight. He came over and clapped me, then thought it would be funny to punch me in the head twice and run. I chased him down and knocked him out with one punch, leant over his body and beat him to death with my fists and stole his clothes, pack and supplies. Messed with the wrong spawn. Number 3 and 4. Last night I hit Gorka police station while waiting for a mate to join our group on the other side of town. He ran straight along the main road and into the station to meet me, but he wasn't alone, he was followed by some very heavily armed bandits he hadn't seen yet. I warned him but it was too late, he was gunned down in the back, dead. I waited upstairs for the gutless bandit to make his way up, SKS trained on a closed door, he opened it and took an entire 10rnd clip to the head and chest. By now my mate had moved from our position to the station to help clear my withdrawal, but he came inside to grab some medical supplies off the bandits corpse. As he was looting he took half an M4 magazine to the back from the bottom of a staircase. I moved into another position to watch the stairs and as the 2nd bandit snuck up I hit him with 3 rounds to the head, killed him instantly. I grabbed a protector case full of saline IV's and some rounds off the first corpse then bugged out as quick as I could. No time to hang around in that death trap Any more! The server reset as I watched the town from a distance to see if anyone else came, never got a chance to go back and loot the bodies, they had serious end game gear.

This thread is where I hope to share the survival stories of myself and my fellow survivors, a group I like to call the 'Band Of BrotherZ'. It consists of my two real life brothers and myself, along with a few friends. We plan on making a full blown Clan in the future. We have had many encounters and missions so far, I will detail them in a narrative fashion as I go, I hope you enjoy reading, and keep an eye out for updates on our exploits. Update - My older brother and I seem to have lost our gear on a server reset and both started again on the coast :( made for some interesting adventures anyway anyway. Part One. It had been almost a month since the outbreak now, although it felt like it had been a lifetime. A month seems like a long time to have survived amongst the chaos, but when I look at the state of Chernarus, now a shadow of the country it once was, I cannot believe it has only taken such a short time to become what it is today. When the outbreak happened, I was with my older brother Pavel, working in the lumber mill out by Berenzino. We had lost both our parents at a young age, almost 10 years ago now. we were left to fend for ourselves, but Pavel had always made sure he kept me safe, and more importantly, we had both made a promise to protect our younger brother Ivan, who was only 8 years old at the time. We had both taken up Jobs over the years to help make money to put Ivan through school, at least one of us would get through life not struggling like Pavel and I had. Most recently, our job at the mill had resulted in Pavel and myself moving for a few months to Berenzino, while Ivan stayed in Lopatino, our family house still stood there and it was close to school for Ivan. The day we got news of the outbreak was pure chaos. One minute it was an ordinary day, next minute the army trucks rolled over the hills, followed by droves of people from the north and west making there way in a huge pack, headed for the Berenzino port. The army were at their back aswell, hurrying them along, loudspeakers blasting as they went, "All citizens of Chernarus, an evacuation has been declared, please keep moving". "We are in a state of martial law". "A biological disaster has occurred". The people were herded to the dock to be evacuated, two large ships could now be seen rounding the point to the north, much to the excitement of the awaiting crowd. Despite the commotion the people still seemed so calm, the crowd appeared several thousand strong, they still moved in a quick and orderly fashion and seemed to remain completely civilized. The sheer amount of evacuees was amazing, but at the same time I could tell that na large chunk of the population were missing.Even as the army hurried the many hundred residents of Berenzino from their homes and workplaces, the growing crowd still seemed too small. I grabbed Pavel and ran to the nearest soldier. "What is this, what is happening?" I asked him. "A state of martial law has been declared,a major biological disaster has occured to the west and we must evacuate, I don't know any details beyond that." He answered sternly. "Lopatino! Was it evacuated too!" I shot back "No, Lopatino will be evacuated on the next ship, for now we can only take who came in this first wave" came the reply. My heart sank as I thought of Ivan, what was happening, was he okay, why weren't we there with him. The soldier barked again "We need you to get on one of these ships Sir, you need to go." "Not without our brother!" The reply flew back loudly from both mine and Pavel's mouth simultaneously. By now the ships were docking, the ramps came down and the evacuees were hurried on board by the soldiers, arms filled with what clothing, supplies and possessions they could have grabbed as they were forced from their homes. We watched for Ivan and shouted his name but got no reply, he was not here. With the last of the passengers boarding the ship, we were ordered on board but stood our ground, we were not leaving our brother behind. The soldier ordering us spoke to us quietly,"I understand, my family is not on the ship either, wait here and we will get you on the next ship with your brother in around six hours" With that he turned and walked back to his comrades who were now making there way onto the trucks to make their way back west to gather the other citizens of Chernarus. The last truck drove away and we were left, completely alone and in complete silence apart from the sound of the waves crashing on the nearby beach. "And now we wait brother." Muttered Pavel as he put his arm around me, and we made our way to a nearby warehouse to sit out the next few hours.

Thanks guys. At the moment we are going to keep to ourselves and not band with strangers unless it is a random encounter or we are helping someone. We are gearing up and stocking up on food and medical supplies to go and help new spawns for now.

Hello to Everyone. I have recently started playing DayZ standalone after months of nagging from my older bro who is very into the game. I wish I started sooner, I am definitely hooked and loving it. I do my best to be a hero and help everyone, I don't KOS and love banding together with other survivors and playing the game how I feel it is supposed to be played.I am an infantryman by trade in the real world and play the game as a hardcore survival combat simulator, not a run and gun troll game. Steam name is mj_gough for anyone who wants to add me.
