Hey, it sounds like the exact same thing that happened to me. Unfortunately, the only option I found was to stay logged in for about four hours, letting myself die of thirst. Then the respawn button worked and everything has been going fine since then. The base problem is that you're dead, but you're not dead. You have to wait until you die of another method. If someone is in-game and can come shoot you, that should also work.

Playing devil's advocate here, but this entire thread was created because you're both a new player, and because you want to look "less militant," which is akin to "running around yelling friendly while playing dress up." With that said, I'm in the same boat as you. I want better interactions with others vs having to log out because two jackasses with M4A1's are chasing me around town for shits and giggles. I wish I had the faith in humanity to think that changing anything about my style of play would affect that, but I have been killed in every circumstance, including as a freshie less than five seconds after spawning. There will always be players taking advantage of situations, and it's just up to blind luck whether you have the misfortune of dealing with them.

The game works just fine on my new PC (with some lag at the main play/choose server/configure/exit screen every time I do anything, but I figure that's normal for this alpha game), but for some reason whenever I exit the game completely, it hangs on a light blue screen for about 30 - 45 seconds, then pops back up with the black screen that says "DayZ": in the middle, with "shutting down" on the top left corner for half a second, then it finally closes. Sometimes it freezes completely and I have to go to task manager and force it to stop.

I think you're a philosophy major reading too much into things. Every single online game is like that. It's the essence of the internet, not the essence of DayZ specifically. Go to reddit and you'll see what people talking from the safety of anonymity is like. This is almost the exact same thing.

What I gather from your posts in this thread is that you bought the game knowing it would be broken, but you don't think that the excuse given at the time you bought the game is valid anymore? It seems like you bought it understanding that it would not function properly, but now you've come to regret that decision because of how slow the development is going. I've only played for a week and I feel like I'll be in the same boat soon enough, once the novelty of the game has worn off and I'm running into glitches on top of bugs on top of errors. You seem to be angry that random people are still living by the "this is an alpha, and won't work properly" credo, but what else is the average user supposed to say? Is everyone supposed to admit "oh, you're right, this game was released early and the glitches/bugs make it an inferior gaming experience at the moment"? Yes, these people are hindering your constructive criticism, but your criticism just opens up the can of worms that this game isn't very far in its development. Most people would rather not focus on how long it will take to get a working product, since it's depressing to think of the beta not even starting until next year, so they just let "this is alpha, it's not supposed to work properly" be the motto they live by. You're reminding people that they paid $30 for a broken game, and they naturally get defensive and fall back on the only excuse anyone has given them.

If there's a red x, then you're trying to join an experimental server as a base user, or joining a base server a an experimental user. I take it you want to connect to a specific server? If not, just go to "change server" and that list populates dozen of servers.
