Most people just bother to say something when they want to complain. Thank you guys! You made me buy the game to play a mod in alpha and I know I'm not alone. That says something about the work you've done. I love it!

have to drink when I havent played the game for a day

I was wondering this too. I haven't logged in for some time and I was already thirsty without any water when I logged out. Should I expect a dead character when I get back home? -
Frustrations as a new player in Day Z 1.7.1.1

What a huge improvement over "you're a stupid shitty CoD shit eater" in your OP. -

I like the idea of starting with almost nothing and finding some way to survive but I still haven't tested it that much. I wouldn't want to get my character killed intentionally to go through that experience ;) -

The content of your post could have been summed up in two sentences and might have been worth reading if it wasn't for all the filler in it that is obviously intended as flamebait. Also, your tone is offensive to those who disagree with you. I'm also a new player and I actually agree with the little content in your post, but frankly, your attitude is probably some of the worst I've seen in these forums. -
Different behavior depending on whether you're in a group
Smig posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This mod sparks something in me that few games do. I really get into character of that loner survivalist in a hostile land. I spend too much time beyond the tree line, watching a town, making sure it's safe. I feel the fear of death when in a dangerous situation and I'm very cautious about shooting at someone. Many people play the game in different ways though and the way you play it might say something about you or the context you play in. One thing that may be interesting to highlight, is how you behave depending on whether you play with a group of people or alone. From what I've observed, if you're alone, you're much more weary of any contact, while, when you're in a group, you're much more likely to be more trigger happy and bully newbies. It might be essentially what would happen in the real world, if there was no order. Groups of people would naturally become "bandits", raiding and exploiting anyone that is alone for resources, while any loner would be hiding and very weary of any contact with strangers. -
I was too friendly at first, until I got murdered on sight. That didn't turn me into any of the other, though. I'm just a loner now. Not shooting on sight but not teaming up either. Just staying the hell away from other survivors. They're worst than zombies. Shooting, even if you go first, can be more risky than just vanishing behind cover and getting away. That's what I do. I also stay away from the bigger cities that attract the most attention.

My first experience with DayZ was at night and it was just unplayable. I tried to follow a road with flares but I ran out and I quickly discovered there was nothing I could do. In my second attempt I fell into the water and I couldn't find the shore again. The suggestion of changing game settings to deal with it may be useful but it doesn't solve the issue. Either the mod is intended to be unplayable at night with starter equipment or it is intended to be playable at night, in which case, it should be playable with normal game settings. Also, the results of increasing gamma and brightness is graphics card related. In my game, I still can't make out any silhouettes at max. About realism, I honestly don't know but I imagine that, without any man-made light sources around, it would be too dark to properly navigate in the wilderness. Sometimes there needs to be a compromise between realism and playability though, joining distant servers with higher latency doesn't seem like the intended game experience.

Is there a way to see the chat history? Sometimes I have to leave for a minute and I don't know if someone talked to me or not. I've looked on the game and I can't find anything. I also searched the forums and didn't find it. I'm posting in the suggestions forum because, if there isn't, there should be. :)

This would be very useful too, not just for the cool effect. My first log in was at night and I quickly spent 10 flares following a road. Of course, I didn't get anywhere but if I could run with a lit flare, then I could cover more ground. I'm not sure about realism though. Would the flare be a hazard being lit in your hands?

I'm one of those guys that just bought the games because of DayZ. It's been a bumpy road, to say the least. I spent hours trying to put everything together. - I started by playing a bit of Arma2. Then, I tried to launch OA but it wouldn't run. I had to run Steam as admin, which is causing issues with the rest of my setup. I feel like I shouldn't have to do this but I'll have to suck it up as there doesn't seem to be a better fix. - Then, the freeware DayZ installer was taking hours to download the mod, which I thought was odd so I tried Six Updater. - Then, I was kicked out of games because of BattlEye. Tried to install it through the option under AO, in Steam. Nope. Missing String error. Had to do it manually. Now, this is what I'm dealing with. If I launch the game through SU, all goes well. If I launch it through Steam, DayZ isn't loaded. I already added the line "-mod=@dayz -nosplash" on OA target, and indeed, if I go into expansions, in the game's main menu, DayZ is there. There's no mention to DayZ in the main menu though, as I see when I launch through SU, and I can't join DayZ games saying its missing DayZ files. I'd rather use the game's server list then SU's, and although I can join a game through SU, leave and then search the game's list, it would be way easier to be able to launch it through Steam. Any ideas? PS: Oh, and sorry for all the extra info, that's frustration speaking :P

I just started and man, that was fun. My first log in was at night. As you can imagine... very disorienting. I threw a flare out and saw a road. Then I threw another flare along the road and started following it. I quickly spent all 10 flares without finding anything but more road. I realized I couldn't do anything in complete darkness so I decided to respawn. I thought cities might have lights so if I respawned near one, I could walk towards it. Spawned, I could hear the ocean but again, couldn't see anything. Threw a flare but it went over a hill. Walked towards it and somehow, fell on water. I swam for a long time, until I started to suffer from hypothermia but I couldn't find land. I couldn't send flares either because I was swimming. I still don't know what happened but maybe there was some cliff that I couldn't climb from water. Anyway, I chose another server, hoping there would be daylight and voilá! I could see! :D Spawned in the water so swam to shore. There were many zombies and 2 big silos with ladders. Sneaked to one ladder and climbed it to get a good view of the area. Saw someone prone before realizing that zombies could go prone too so I spent some minutes asking who he was over global chat. Eventually, someone told me I was talking to a zombie... While I was waiting for a good time to climb down the ladder, another player spotted me. He told me to run into a warehouse if I was spotted. Sure enough, they started attacking me while I was still going down so I ran to the warehouse. The other survivor got there too and we started to pick them off... until I had no bullets. Then, we made a run for it and we split paths. When I lost them, my vision was all gray and shaking so I basically used everything in my inventory. Sneaked out of that crowded place and into a building. Found some more food there that I ate right away to recover, then I sneaked out of the urban area to a cluster of trees and disconnected. So... here I go again! Vision's still gray and I'm at 4000 blood I think. Hopefully, I can get through it

Actually, what a great idea! :D Shouldn't there be bears or other dangers in the wild? It would be realistic and since zombies don't stroll around the forests, other threats should. It could still be way safer than cities but as any survivor living in the woods, you'd still have to worry about wildlife.
