Death Stories From First Week of Playing

This week for me... Death #1 Slid down a cliff at Pik Kozlova > dead. Full kit. Corpse ran but it had de-spawned. Death #2 Fell off a stairwell > broken leg > zombie > dead. Full kit. Too far for corpse-run. Death #3 Fell down a cliff at Zvet > dead. Full kit. Corpse ran but got the self-corpse-cant-loot bug. Note to self: NO MORE CLIMBING FFS! ;) -
Since a weapon cleaning kit can bring the gun from damaged back to Worn that would probably be ok. What is the damage reduction from Pristine > Worn > Damaged > Badly Damaged, anyone?

Other people have given reasons why the smaller hunting pack is "better" in some respects. Here's another reason why you might down-grade to the smaller size; As a newer player you tend to carry more because naturally you are less sure about which is the best/right gear for you and your play style. As you develop your skills and play style you will likely carry less stuff because you know exactly what you need.

The pistol and M4 compensator are bugged and do nothing as far as I have read. Not sure about the Mosin.

Small falls, even as small as this, can cause broken legs and even death. I've broken my leg several times coming off the edge of a stair set in a barn. There is also a bug ( I think, unconfirmed) where the fall distance is somehow amplified - so a small fall effects you like you jump off a cliff. I was climbing around Pik Koslova the other day (the rocks) and I slid down the side of one quite slowly; dead. Welcome to DayZ Alpha, bro. :) -

Honestly, shooting fresh spawns gets you no loot, it's not bad for the new spawn playerbecause they can just respawn again, and all it does it give away your position whilst popping away at new spawned. You probably get a few dicks shooting fresh spawns but otherwise it has very few positive outcomes and it would make more sense to snipe a location where killing players earned you more loot or tears, whichever you are after. -

Fights can be a lot of fun and I think everyone needs to get some kills down when they start playing. I'd saying that a successful lone-wolf trust meeting gives you a pretty awesome feeling.

Ha, classic. So the only way to "know" is to try firing it and see.... Also, am I reading correctly that the "semi-auto" setting is more accurate? Just checking there was not some bizzaro-logic where it was more accurate on full auto or something. Thanks

Thanks for the advice. For 300m with the M4 I'd always be using a bipod. But I've found I can hit consistently at this range. I'm going to stick with the M4 for this life then give the SKS another go. Also discovered today how to get a shotgun in your pack using a hacksaw. :)

Thank you. As with anything I have found doing in-game range shooting at zeds has been a good measure to test the effective accuracy. I was trying to see if I could survive with the M4A1 as an assault weapon and also use it in a fashion at 300-400m range. Turns out I can with a combination of your above advice (either ATLAS and/or the MP/Magpul setup). I'm quite fond of the SKS and it seems pretty accurate at range but it is no match for the M4A1 at close quarters in my fairly brief experiences.
