This is why you'd need almost half of a trade group to be armed guards. Also, I remember a video earlier this year with Dean explaining that there was going to be a change in the loot system so that certain items would only spawn once in an entire server.
-
Kiwi? Seriously? People are actively looking for those and willing to trade? Wish I had known that. I find the fresh ones all the time. I am sure I won't find any now that I know.

This is why I figured the blood test kits would rank high. I am always finding blood bags and syringes, but to date have only ever found five blood testing kits and even then only two were ever on the same life. I figure they would be super valuable to players and of course using a few on our own troops would tell us who has O- to fill some blood bags with as well.

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)

Odd. I had never noticed the behavior until just now. Either I was oblivious or I was really lucky. -
Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
leviathanapsu replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
In the last two days or so, I have noticed different behavior from zombies than I have seen so far. Always before, the majority of them were near buildings with one or two ranging out further (especially in big cities). One might wander once in a while if there was a noise or a recent player through, but most of them stood dully staring around them with an occasional glance to the sides. Instead, I am now finding them out in the middle of nowhere with increasing frequency. I have seen many of them walking aimlessly forward out on their own when there is no visible reason. Even in empty servers where no players could be setting them off outside of myself it is happening. I sat and watched one doing it for a while. It walked a ways, stopped, looked around and after a pause, began walking again. I hadn't heard about any changes to the stable version, so does anyone know why this sudden shift in behavior is happening? Don't get me wrong, I love it. Suddenly they are a much bigger threat and going out into the woods doesn't equal sure safety, but it is also strange to see when the only thing anyone has been talking about recently is fishing and hunting. -
I can sympathize. I bought this game without a mic to use and found out very fast that typing is an invitation to run up and kill you. The worst are those who keep trying to say friendly as they perfect their aim on your face. Playing with a mic hasn't made things any less dangerous, but I do at least find that I don't have to risk missing a shot if they rush me. I am lucky not to have gotten so far as to shoot random people, but only because I am paranoid enough to rarely move into an area where I don't have cover. I back away and just warn them. If they chase into where I am thinking it means I am without ammo or something, they take a sawed off shotgun to the face. I don't think you are a bandit persay though. You don't go looking for trouble or looting those who aren't a threat. You attack those who threaten you and react logically to the risk of an attack from someone who is rushing into where you are. Those are judgement calls rather than blatant KoS situations to me.

Looks sort of like Squidward.

Sound bugs - keep hearing zombies that aren't there
leviathanapsu replied to Ben_uk's topic in General Discussion
I am pretty sure I had a zombie phase into the ground while following me up a hill once. I kept hearing it as I ran along, but it was nowhere to be seen even when I stopped and waited for it. Eventually I cam back down the hill in another direction and wouldn't you know it, suddenly a zombie attacks me from behind well away from much of anything. Can't prove it was following me under that hill, but it sure seemed like it. -
Video removed by the user. That didn't take long.
-
To date, I have been able to carry a melee, a rifle, two handguns and a shotgun along with all the related clips and quickloaders with zero concern over having to drop something to climb. If all of that isn't enough, you have some seriously bad aim or you are just being way too greedy.

Level open ground at the time. I figured it was a ballistic helmet glitch and have since stopped using the ballistic helmet.
-
That might be true in some cases, but it doesn't explain how the same thing happened to me while standing. Full health and a pristine ballistic helmet followed by a one hit kill by a zombie.

I finally had the funds come through to purchase the game and have been playing for the last few hours. There's a steep learning curve at first I have to say. Life 1 - Apparently I was stuck in run mode because I was making enough noise to attract every zombie in the town even while crouching. I knocked one out and tried to run away, but they never seemed to lose my trail despite weaving around buildings and I was eventually ripped limb from limb. Life 2 - After consulting the guilde, I realized I needed to use certain keys to ensure I wasn't in a running crouch and proceeded to go exploring. Unfortunately I accidentally stepped right in the line of sight for a zombie and died while trying to figure out how to climb a ladder out of it's reach. Life 3 - Starting to feel like Lazarus from coming back to life so many times, I managed more caution this time. I found a fire extinguisher and even managed to kill a couple zombies who ran up to me. Great! Unfortunately the last one damaged all of my rags and it said I couldn't use them to stop the bleeding. I died looking for something to stop the flow of blood. Life 4 - This one was going great. I had full hydration, I managed to find a lot of food and the only down side was losing a pair of binoculars to a server restart. I wandered through a pretty much empty server until it dropped the connection and decided that with a number of items in my pack and fully refreshed, I would go join a newbie friendly server to try my hand at interaction. I suspect the listing of 'newbie friendly' was a trap however as I was KoSed from behind despite not having a gun and not a single word being spoken to me. Note to self, ignore any server claiming to be newbie friendly. Life 5 - To be seen. I expect to start sometime after dinner now that I have a better feel for the controls and a grasp on the basics of the system. I still haven't found a single gun, so maybe this one will be the time. I think I will also have to work on minding my surroundings better while I manage my inventory. That little KoS incident asside, I am pleased with the game so far. I haven't experienced most of the glitches everyone frequently complains about so far. Killed a zombie with my firsts more than once and once I had the machete it was easy enough to survive an encounter. I did get a little bit of zombie ghosting through walls, but even that was pretty minor. I think once I am a bit more skilled with the controls, I am going to have a blast with this game.

I think this will be my last update. I'm sure people don't really want to hear the ongoing journey. Life 9 lasted a while. I was fully geared with almost my entire wish list of items. I had killed countless zombies and now had a full stock of pristine items, head protection and the best gear the military could afford. And then this morning I got one-shot instant dead from a zombie. Literally, full health and armored up meant nothing to this zombie and it just did one hit instant kill. I am going to tell myself this is a glitch since if not it means bothering with the best gear is pretty much meaningless. This now puts me on life 10, which I am dubbing 9.1. Life 11 will be 10 if and when I die by something a bit more legitimate.

Yeah, I have heard of this happening a lot. You find someone friendly who acts the hero and then it turns out you are a walking inventory for when their friend logs in and needs gear. Excellent tip. I could never figure out why sometimes I could outpace a zombie and other times I couldn't. I would lay odds the times I outpaced them I was hitting a few diagonal lunges in there. Onward! Life 8 = I had almost the perfect gear set after a few hours, several near deaths and some lucky finds. The only things I really wanted were a better scope and bipod for one of my guns, a magnum to go with the two quickloaders I had found and a slightly larger backpack. I was heading towards an airfield, carefully avoiding anywhere there might be a lot of zombies or people, but hit a barrier I couldn't go over. I followed it to where there was a break (of course right near a town) and alerted one zombie. No big deal, I pull out my ax to catch it as it arrives when suddenly five more are on top of me. One from behind and two on each side. No sound, no warning. One minute there is one, the next six without any other players around to have pulled them to me. I had even scouted ahead with my binoculars to be sure I wasn't getting into anything big and yet there I was. All I can figure is that there was some sort of a glitch. Regardless, I was torn to bits in a few seconds since I was jammed into the horde. I only managed to take out two of them before I went. Life 9=Ongoing. Among other things, I have the best pack, lots of supplies, several decent weapons (though I need to improve them a bit still) and a note written out for whoever finds my body on the next death. It's looking good though. I might actually be fully equipped soon if I can survive it and have been improving at dealing with zombies as well as players. I still suffer from a lack of mic though.

I actually like this a lot. Now if someone could figure out a way to keep from regularly breaking legs on ladders I would be elated. I swear I have climbed ladders my whole life without ever breaking my leg. Why have I broken a leg twice in two days doing it? Seriously though, I like that you came up with an option that doesn't just instantly work out. Sure it saves the broken leg, but adds a lot of noise, disorientation and probably poor aim as well as the inability to take further actions. That seems pretty well balanced to me.

As I said, I did a lot of reading before starting, so already knew a lot of tips and tricks. So... I imagine a few people are wondering how day two went. I will try to keep the breakdown brief. Life 5 = Surprisingly uneventful. I found all sorts of gear and was loaded to the gills with great stuff. Two handguns, a sawed off shotgun, a mosen with scope and bipod, lots of ammo, food, water in canteens, medical supplies. You name it. Wandered aimlessly for a while until I ran into a fellow who turned out to be friendly. He was looking for a backpack, so I helped him get that along with some other supplies. We ended up in the shipwreck when a major desync caught me on the way out. I turned, the server decided I went forward instead and when the two resolved, I was dead, having fallen four stories from the broken section of hull. Life 6 = My newfound companion and I tried to make our way towards one another and I hit a town to stock up. I was way too lucky and found almost every supply I could need plus more. Ran into another person who stopped a respectable distance away. When I started to type friendly (I don't have a mic), he ran up and knocked me out for my gear. I awoke while he was looting me and was again clubbed, this time to death. Figures I had planned on giving him directions to get the other great gear I had seen. Life 7 = Wandered forever and by pure chance, ended up in the town with my new friend! We went out in search of more supplies for me (this time the only weapon I could find for two hours was a machette). Eventually found a shotgun with ten rounds and a quick loader and set off for the airfield. Ran into a ton of zombies along the way and it seemed like each one we killed just spawned one or two more. We finally died when a desync started causing us to miss wildly and stand taking hits. He survived me by about ten minutes, but zombies eventually got us both. Lessons learned: Buy a mic. Shot anyone who moves towards me without permission. Desync sucks and is apparently going to be the leading cause of death for me now that I have the basics.

I did a lot of reading here before I bought the game. As I recall the rags in question were from my shirt. As to the zombie, some of them seem to be harder than others. The woman zombie seems to take the most hits to bring down on average. I've killed a few now with fists, though it usually leaves me mostly dead and bleeding badly. The trick seems to be to aim above their head and knock them down frequently. While down, keep pounding the crap out of them. I figure my odds are better that way than running since I have only ever once managed to lose zombies who were chasing me and usually just end up setting off a bunch more anyway. Going up to a second floor seems to be a good strategy too, since most of them phase through the stairs and can't follow, then lose interest after a while.

I can see and move but everything is black

I am pretty sure that means it is night time on the server. Have you tried turning on the flashlight? -
Strange alarm next to Svetlojarsk (Guba)

Sounds a lot like some of the videos I have seen where someone was trolling the people around them by hiding nearby and playing sounds into the speaker. -
Anybody know what this is?
leviathanapsu replied to [Outcasts]Massacre's topic in General Discussion
This brings up a big concern for me. New players to the game such as myself won't know what is and isn't unusual for the game. It is entirely possible for us to pick up some hacked item we don't realize isn't supposed to be part of the game and get ourselves banned. I hope there is some way that the system tags when something didn't originate from the player or there could end up being a lot of innocent newbies getting banned. Edit to add: Obvious infinite ammo and the like is one thing, but otherwise normal seeming gear is what I am referring to. -
Dear Developing Team, I only found out about the existence of DayZ in any format a short while ago. Not interested in buying Arma, I contented myself just watching videos of people who were playing the game. Eventually I stumbled across Standalone. It was then that I rewatched every video I had already seen along with those of Standalone. Instead of getting bored, I just kept getting more interested in the idea of playing the game. I have not yet bought the game and won't for a bit as it will take time before my spare funds come in to spend on nonessentials. Hopefully I will have those funds soon, but that is neither here nor there. To content myself, I have been reading the forums and commenting on a few as well. Time and again, someone disgruntled with the pace of development will post how they are 'quitting forever' and why. I can agree with them to a degree. It most certainly is a long development time, though I have seen far worse for less impressive games. I am led to understand the team working on this project is considerably smaller than is normal for such undertakings and is probably a large part of the slow progress. I don't know why that is the case, but I am sure there is some reason to keep the team tight. What I will say is this: Don't think that there are only two opinions. It isn't the die-hards saying how great it is and the old disgruntled bitching about the pace. There is a stream of fresh blood out there who like where you are going. Some of us indeed understand that working with code from the ground up means you may take far longer to produce the same work. In so doing, we also know that the nature of that work is going to surpass what came before it. It is an easy thing to slap a new face on an old product and just tweek a few things. It is something else entirely to start with a skeleton and piece it together from nothing. I have seen aspects of early development and recent development. The quality is high on those things which get added and doubtlessly debugging has been a real chore with enough players hanging around to almost be a beta test rather than an alpha. If it takes three or four more years to see the full development of aspects of worth found in the original mod, I believe I speak for at least part of your player base in saying that it will still be worth it. Worth it because the quality will be higher and the execution tighter. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Keep up the hard work and thank you for suffering the endless slings and arrows of those who felt like a small team should have been able to build a perfect product at a breakneck speed. You've done enough that I am breaking my rule of never paying for alpha/beta test games just to have a crack at it. Or at least I will be once my play funds come through. Thank you, Signed: Another random player

I haven't seen anything else doing a few searches that quite touched this, so here goes. Having yet not played the game, but watching a large number of others play, I have considered the problem that comes along with base building. Server hoppers can come against a well built and defended base they can't manage to penetrate. They then just hop to another server, move in the direction they want to be and hop back. Suddenly they are inside the defenses. I thought it might be interesting to designate a home-base server for those who plan to build structures. Within your home-base server where you are likely to do all of your major building, you get a certain amount of space you can designate as no-spawn location. A circle around whatever point you set (unable to be altered without resetting your home server) that pushes anyone logging in there to the outer rim. This way, you can build a small base and prevent cheating to gain entry without violating anyone else's rights. If you try to have a base too big for your sphere, it is no different then when you have too much territory to try and watch in real life. Someone can slip through a crack. Multiple players can overlap their areas so that the larger a group is, the larger their base can be as a defensive structure. and setting a no-spawn zone. I think this would go a long way towards a more immersive and secure sense of building when the base building is put in. Any thoughts?

I think the OP is meaning that they would like to see the removal of player ability to adjust contrast and brightness levels at night so that people can't do so as a way to still see without the need for flashlights or other tools.

Buckskins have a lot of positive qualities over normal clothing, but take a huge amount of time to make. Much like many other primitive forms of construction they were slowly disappearing not because they weren't useful. Instead, it was a matter of practicality. It is easier to buy a ready-made item that accomplishes a function instead of spending hours across the span of multiple days to prepare an item. Flint arrow heads are just as deadly as metal, but break more easily and take more effort to produce in large numbers. I could see there being levels of ability in crafting such things though. Someone could toss raw hide over them to gain clothing/protection, but doing so risks disease. Eventually with practice and gained skill (read failed attempts) you get a grip on making leather and buckskin and can then have something slightly more protective than non-armored clothing that offers some benefits against cold or damp as well. Jack of all trades and master of none. Similar things could play out in other animal-crafted items as well. Invariably they are more fragile, but you can make them yourself and they do the job well enough.
