I am curious how many other people have tried sneaking up on someone so you can covertly place a pre-written note into their backpack. I know I have seen video of people leaving food and gear in people's backpacks for humor, but I haven't seen anyone yet leave a note. I have considered trying to sneak up on someone deep in sniper mode sometime, but haven't yet tried to make this idea a reality yet.

I haven't tried yet, but I am led to understand that you indeed can.

I am convinced that Russia must be in a perpetual state of monsoon season if the game is to be believed. Seems like it is constantly raining. Sometimes with huge claps of thunder and heavy downpours, sometimes drizzles, but it is raining at least fifty percent of the time I play. My guess is it just cycles through weather off of a chart that says dry, drizzle, rain, thunderstorm.... so of course dry weather is only 1/4 of the total time on a server. Heh.Just a guess. I think it would be interesting if it sometimes managed dry spells where the creeks went dry or sleet and snow so that things like those bulky jackets had a value.

I am having the reverse problem. I found several hacksaws in pristine condition, but have yet to find a single shotgun in the last month.

There are four basic sorts of play in DayZ in my experience. With the exception of Hackers, I don't think one style is inherently worse than the others, just different. Each group plays for a different reason and gets something different out of play. The problem occurs when someone playing one way runs into someone playing another way. Most of the time, those further down the list get their fun ruined by those higher on the list. Those earlier in the list tend to look down their nose at anyone complaining from a later list as needing to accept them. IE: you play the way you want and I will play the way I want. Nevermind the obvious problem they have when someone else does something that ruins the game for them. A Deathmatching player will tell an Interactive player to fuck off if they don't like getting shot in the face, but watch how quick they scream when a hacker kills them without a chance to react. No, hackers aren't acceptable, but at the end of the day when you KoS someone who tried to say hello, you are doing the same thing to that player that the hacker has done to you. First up are the hackers. They generally lack the skills required to survive long in the game as it was designed and are easily frustrated with losing. Bypassing the normal difficulties allow them to feel like they have some level of power that they otherwise could never have obtained. They play games because they want to feel like they are unstoppable and awesome. Some of them aren't even inclined to always KoS, as evidenced by some of the videos people have posted, but they are also never comfortable without their crutches. These are the same sorts who always look up the cheat codes right away on any game they play so they can enable God-mode and run through the game blowing away the enemy. If they die, they just respawn all their gear and teleport to go take out whoever made them feel less powerful for a moment. They will complain whenever their account gets locked, along with trying to say they have no idea why it happened. The second is Deathmatching. This is where you KoS against any living person you see regardless of your being outmatched and outgunned. Camping falls into this area, as does the younger crowd who think the only goal of this game is to see how many people you can kill before getting taken down yourself. A few of them get a tickle out of playing friendly long enough to either get gear to walk with them to where a friend is or to get someone with better weapons to drop their guard for a kill shot. They only ever complain when a hacker does something to outmatch them and takes their fun away. The next is Banditry and Heroics. It still involves some KoS, but generally does so as part of a larger narrative. Bandits may ignore targets without anything useful to them and more than a few try to do hold-ups rather than just outright killing. Heros try to take out those they assume are bandits, sometimes killing from a distance without knowing the situation. (not everyone with a mosin or who happens to be looking around at a distance is trying to find someone to shoot after all). Many of these like some degree of roleplay in their interactions. Those who like to interact with targets first are often complaining about how strait KoS players are taking the fun away. Last are the cooperative players. Sure, they don't mind having enemies after some interaction or even strait PvP in a roleplay setup, but they loathe getting shot for what they perceive as no reason. Some want pure PvE and quickly learn to just avoid people altogether, but most want a blend, so keep trying to interact despite the risks. If they have to, they will shoot people, but it is done only when the risk is exceptionally high or the danger extremely obvious. Of course, when they get shot in the face for reasons they aren't able to understand, by any of the other groups, they are upset. We all quickly learn that the battlecry of the KoS/Deathmatch player is 'Friendly!" It becomes especially frustrating for one group when they enter a server focused on their type of play only to find a number of those from another group lower on the list than them is there. Roleplay servers attract a lot of bandit/hero types who will shot you at a distance without interaction. No KoS servers are a huge draw for Deathmatchers who know that many of their targets aren't going to put up defenses as quickly. Every server gets plagued by hackers, though they seem less common on roleplay servers (probably because they don't get to feel as epic when someone isn't firing back). I don't really have a solution, but I sometimes wish that we already had servers with the ability to boot and lock out players who weren't sticking to the style of that server. 'Friendly' servers could boot anyone who is noted as KoS. Roleplay servers could remove people who aren't getting close enough to interact before doing headshots. Every server could boot hackers. Everyone could focus on the sort of play they enjoy without the endless fights on the forum about if KoS is horrible vs LYOL sentiments. So why am I even writing this? Good question. Maybe just to get it off my chest. If a few people read it and start to consider how their own style of play may affect others in the same way someone else has affected them, maybe that is enough. I doubt most will though. Deathmatchers just have too much fun with targets who don't get a chance to defend themselves, etc. I don't know. What does everyone else think about the matter?

Interaction doesn't mean a lack of conflict or touchy feely exploration only. It just means someone has the decency to say "Hands up and don't turn" or "drop the weapon" before firing so that you have some decision to make and you deal with the consequences. It doesn't mean they won't still kill you at the end, nor does it mean that every situation is going to play out with instant interaction. If you turn a corner and a gun is pointed at you and who never made a sound while you were clicking along upstairs or such, it is perfectly reasonable to assume you are about to be shot and react accordingly. That is KoS that I don't think would be considered an issue to someone who plays on any server. I don't think KoS is an invalid style of play, I just think that there are clearly those who aren't interested in every human face being an instant buckshot to the eyes and it would be great if/when those who like one style can manage to regulate the servers in a way that lets each play in their own favored style. I can't deny that I have a bias against KoS. I don't generally play many FPS games because I find it boring and tiresome with no real gains to be made other than body counts. Here, it can be made worse by the fact that fully kitted folks will shoot newspawns for fun or newspawns will boldly run up to people with gear and start attacking since they have nothing to lose. The reason this game appeals so much is because you have to go out and find what you are going to use. Put hours of time in. When there is conflict, you may die and lose it all, which adds a lot of tension and makes you much more aware and cautious (in theory anyway). Even better as they add ever more systems to explore and try out different roles. I will probably never deathmatch here and it is fair to say I am indeed bias against it since it makes the game dull and makes my hours of play feel like wasted time (which it is anyway if we are being honest, but the illusion is nice). If I go on a general server, I recognize that KoS and Deathmatching is perfectly acceptable and viable there and act accordingly. When I go onto an RP server, obviously the thing I am looking to do there is interactions. Sometimes things go well, such as having two people playing out the roles of UN aide workers patching me up and helping me get to food and drinks after a near death along the coast with zombies. Other times things go bad, such as making a trade with a random person who realized I had a lot of things they wanted but didn't have anything to offer for. They stalked me after the interaction waiting for a chance to take me out and the gunfight that followed was dramatic and felt like it had more weight than just 'Gimme yer shit'. Yeah, they wanted the same thing in the end, but it was through the interaction that it came about, not just because I was random target number 200 who walked past the crosshairs. Whatever server you go to, you obviously are looking for that on that day. Maybe, as with many, it changes over time. Hell, I might even say group 3 of hero and bandit are really just another part of the interaction group, since most of them do interact first. *shrug* My point is, you are welcome to KoS. I don't have issue with it outright. My issue is only when people looking for one form of play on a server labeled with that sort of play, get stuck with something entirely different because someone decided to take advantage. If indeed the majority of players are KoS, it's because those who aren't end up bored or frustrated enough to walk away from the game after a while. KoS folks rarely rant about someone (hackers aside) ruining their fun because very little can. They do however love to get into arguments with the people who are frustrated with the other styles of play getting short shrift. I run into very few KoSers. I have only found one person I suspected of hacking. I wrote this, more as an exploration since I am constantly seeing people bitch about one side or the other. Hell, it is obviously starting here as well. I considered a comment about us all playing nice in this discussion, but that would probably set someone off again about a need for civility = a lack of conflict.

The reason I make this comparison is because of the tendency of those who are seeking things like RP/friendly/non-kos servers are doing so because of the expectation that there is a rule (granted unenforcable right now) in place that says you need to try interacting at least a little first. Those who go onto those servers intent on deathmatching and KoS are violating a rule as well. Not a rule of the game as a whole, but a rule of the server. A hacker and a KoSer on a RP server are both gaining an unfair advantage over the people who are following the rules. One form of cheating breaks the game, the other form just ruins the fun of someone. Most people on servers where you are supposed to interact aren't upset at defeat so much as upset at some guy who sits on a hill and pops their head off for no reason other than to amuse himself with how superior he is at taking out easy targets. To me, anyone deathmatching on a RP server is no better than a hacker. Reverse it to where a RP person goes onto a server listed as 'Deathmatch' or something like it and they have no reason to complain and no cheating occurs.

There already are separations, but they get ignored. Several Roleplaying servers exist, but those who love to deathmatch hop onto them (along with anything that says friendly or no KoS) because they know there are easy targets there. Short of locked, invite only servers where the admins can boot those players who prove to have only wanted to deathmatch and snuck in under the guise of someone who actually wants some sort of interaction... I just don't think you can make it effective. After the features get added to allow admins some control, then we will see effective separation for those who are disinterested in deathmatches.

A guy with an orange backpack who obviously surrendered to your firing squad, a guy running away who never fires on you once and is just trying to escape with the tent he found and a couple completely unarmed folks you gun down after seeing he is unarmed. The ones who shot first at the start might have been bandits, but the majority of this video and the tent seem to show yourself and your crew as the bandits. Congrats on getting one extra view, but it won't be happening again.

Might take a little more than five seconds for some people to type. If they haven't turned towards you or lifted a weapon, it might be alright to give a touch more time.

What Video content do you look for in DayZ videos?
leviathanapsu replied to hiniberus's topic in Gallery
I think way too many of the videos I find are focused on either grade-school style humor or banditry. Sometimes someone who thinks they are funny actually is, but only one in ten manages that. As for banditry, if I want to see that, I will just head for the coast and play. Sometimes it is interesting to watch the tactics people use, but on both combat and humor videos, there are just way too many of them for that to be a good niche. If you are trying to find what will get the most views, you have to do something unusual compared to the average person. Either edited/scripted or spontaneous, I can think of only a few who do stories and scenarios where they get partly or fully into a character for the duration of a video or several videos. In every case, the person in question has highly popular videos for doing so because of the rarity of it. Regardless, find what you can comfortably do and then look for an untapped niche within that framework. -
I don't think all of his fanbase ignored it. I found the evidence pretty damning, but still watch his videos when they come out. It isn't that I condone the behavior, but rather that his videos offer something almost no other DayZ videos do: Cohesion. They are edited together from any number of filmed bits, reworked and sometimes dubbed over all to create a storyline within the video. There is a sense that there might be more than just running around randomly shooting people and looting. You get a story with a set goal and a sense of conclusion. I attribute that more than anything to his popularity. People want to feel like there is something to focus on in DayZ. It makes the game more fun. When they watch those videos, they are feeling like there can be goal oriented play in DayZ and it inspires them to want to play more.

I am looking for one thing only at the moment. A tent. I would prefer pristine of course, but condition can be negotiated on. As for what I offer in exchange, it depends on what you would like. I can readily offer a bow along with some arrows. I can quickly construct a fishing rod with what I have in my inventory. Maybe you'd be interested in a longhorn? Ammo clips? I even have several bags of O+ blood if you are interested. Send me a message and we can work out the details. This would be for regular mode, as I am limited on what I can offer in Hardcore outside of a bloodbag of O-. If several people offer me tents, I will likely do what I can to trade with each of them, as other members of the Trade Guild could use them as well.

What is the behaviour of zombies at night?
leviathanapsu replied to Robert Neville's topic in General Discussion
My experience with night zombies is that they spawn less and have much duller senses. I walked right past several of them without them noticing me. I was crouched, but in daylight I would have been seen at almost any range. This was only about 50m away. I got through the whole NWAF with only two zombies noticing me at all. -
I want to first preface this with the fact that it is not a recruitment at this stage, but rather a discussion, hence why I am placing it in the general discussion forum. If it seems like there is a lot of positive feedback, it may eventually move into recruitment. I have been pondering the issues of deathmatching in the game for a bit now and the standard comment seems to be “There is nothing else to do.” which is a valid complaint. The running comment that follows is that it is because of a lack of <insert whatever that player enjoys most here> in the game. Inability to move away from the coast readily isn't helping this either, but that won't change until vehicles show up. One of the things I learned from text-based gaming and roleplaying is that you might do well with a good person at the helm and not need to put much thought in, but when you have someone who isn't offering much to work with, you need to be proactive. In this case, the game isn't fully developed, so is only giving us a few tools to work with. I personally can't join a roleplay server due to a lack of a mic (typing makes you move which gets me killed more often than not for acting 'hostile' as it forces sudden lunges forward) but that seems like avoidance of the issue anyway. I suppose I should get to the point here. I am imagining a group or guild who work together to create playable situations for people. Maybe several sub-groups involved. I envision them perhaps taking up residence in a town on a server that doesn't frequently restart and handling matters like trade and mercenary aide. Something where everyone knows if you go to that town, there is a chance they will have been set up there and you can head to a certain house to get food, another has ammo, another supplies, etc. What you have to give to get them is based on the current supply and demand. Nothing is stopping you from trying to raid them, but at the same time there are heavily armed men and women about who are there to stop just that. Maybe one or two people who run supplies between the various houses as trades are made and others out gathering certain types of supplies. Mercs obviously just hang about and then accompany people to dangerous locations for a set price. It would take a commitment on the part of those involved to spend boring periods of doing nothing but chatting with other members of the group, so I don't think anyone would be doing it all the time. Just maybe once a week everyone gets together and does a setup or maybe break it into a few times a week based on smaller subgroups. More or less committing yourself to improving the gameplay and creating an interesting situation for others so that there can be something to do other than deathmatch. There could even be an occasional odd event like a scavenger hunt where everyone starts in one spot and has to run around finding everything on a list. A few enforcers hanging around watch for anyone deathmatching and bring them down. Such enforcers would need to be identifiable, perhaps through a specific article of clothing or something. Anyway, what do people think of this idea? Feel like it could add a bit more to the game until the developers have added new things for us to work with?

Proactive Players Creating New Layers
leviathanapsu replied to leviathanapsu's topic in General Discussion
You will note the original posting was in May. I have since gotten a mic. Up until owning this game, I have never had a reason or need to own one, so it was a waste of funds to buy one. I found very quickly that typing in this game = instant gunshot to the face. I modified the idea a bit so that we mostly travel in small groups trading with those we run across and killing those who decide they want to loot us. We would still like to do a larger event once in a while, but not until the group is larger and persistent loot is in place. Any safe zone we would do won't have a permanent location. That ties into this quote: Instead, it would be selected before the event and then announced impromptu that such and such town on a specific server is having a trade event. Looters and loners would have an equal chance to get onto the server, but our people would all be in place beforehand. Harder to predict where the event will be before it happens. -
So I have been thinking a lot lately about the Trader group I mentioned in this post previously. I am pretty sure I am going to start recruiting for this soon and building up a few like-minded folks into a workable group. With this in mind, I am trying to decide what sorts of items are the most desirable for trading. Ammo is probably always going to be in high demand, but beyond that, I know what I consider valuable. Favorite weapons (often those with more than two shots in them)Quick loaders and large clipsCanteens and WaterbottlesTactical Jackets and HolstersRice, cereal and powdered milkLarge packsAmmo cases and protective casesMedical supplies, especially blood test kitsAre there any other items that are probably in high demand that would be of great interest to players willing to trade? (yes, I know bandits are probably going to be eyeing us too)
-
I'd only mentioned the things people have been asking after. I do have several pistols and a few clips, though I will have to go through and inventory which ones I have that pair properly since I've not had any requests lately for them. I have a good supply of backpacks at the moment, but a shortage of rope, so improvised backpacks, bows and full fishing rods are currently in short supply. If people want full fishing rods, I can probably pull something together in the next few days. Most of the time I find people looking for one component of what they need (often the lures for example) rather than a fully made set. Since the full sets tend to take up a lot of inventory, I usually only make one if requested. If you like, LeeVanSpliff, I will message you on here when I have one ready for you.

Some people really like cereal. I never bother with cereal or rice most of the time myself due to how much hydration you lose, but I do know there have been people who were very excited to have it.

There is a very good chance the trade group I started will soon be able to start offering up O- blood bags. I will keep people posted on that. I had the Orel uniform and press vest, but the new zombies got to those. I do however still have an engraved 1911 and a few LRS up available for trade. I now have quite a few of these for trade, Several pristine and one with a pristine hat to keep it on. No one has requested any who I've met yet though. I could swear someone was asking about a pristine cowboy hat too, but haven't found that posting to offer it to them.

LOCKED server characters (once persistent items and player storage are working properly)
leviathanapsu replied to Baklavah's topic in Suggestions
I very rarely KoS and when I do, it is because there is too much risk (for example NWAF inside a building when someone suddenly turns a corner. I've been shot every single time I tried to talk first out there unless the person had their hands empty, so I don't risk it any more). I generally don't server hop either since that isn't particularly fun for me. I do however have frame-rate issues from time to time. More than once a server that is normally a good ping ends up going through the roof for a while. This is especially frustrating after playing in it for a while and then suddenly having my frames drop down to a flip book in slow motion. So when this happens, I just find a safe spot, log out and look for a server with a reasonable and stable ping again. I don't want to have to try figuring out what I was doing or where I was every single server. Several of my favorite servers have identical names, making it impossible to know on the opening screen which is which. If I play a console game and have to restart from square one every single time I log in, it isn't fun. If I am constantly dropped in new locations with random gear and no idea what I was doing, that isn't fun either. That is without taking into account my Trader group RP going on. I get it, I really do. I don't really like the idea of insane looting from server jumpers or people using private servers as loot safehouses. The solution to the loot storage on locked servers by balancing out that option with storage not going between locked and unlocked servers. Locking the server controls who gets to play there, but also keeps you from looting all the other servers and then hiding it in your own. With the transfer of items between open servers though, I don't see a solution that doesn't heavily interrupt the ability to play for casual players. Accusing everyone who doesn't agree with you of being cheaters is pretty childish and doesn't offer a viable solution to those who disagree. It just puts up a wall of hostility between you and anyone who reads it. That won't convince people, it just makes them feel like you're butthurt over something and ranting about ways to make sure you never have to get butthurt the same way. Is that true? Maybe, maybe not, but that is how it comes across. Instead of shooting down anyone with a different opinion, try formulating a solution to the problem that resolves their on concerns. -
Assuming the bandages weren't ruined, then this is a bug I encountered once or twice as well. I would go to use bandages and nothing would happen, or worse yet, it sometimes didn't even offer me the option. From what I can tell, it had to do with my computer lagging with the other. Most of the time it fixed by just logging off and logging into a new server with a lower ping rate.

Is anyone else finding current stable build.. well, unplayable?
leviathanapsu replied to Forrelist's topic in General Discussion
1. Never seen this one yet 2. I haven't had them slide after killed, but my god are they otherwise a bear to deal with. Certain ones pass through walls and doors almost every time, but none of them fall through stairs any more, so the only safe places are on roofs or firestation towers. They hit even when you are very far away from them (sometimes out of sight entirely), have very small hit boxes, respawn constantly so that if you shoot one, another will always replace it and are able to track you without line of sight even if you are crawling. Of anything you mention, this is what makes things the hardest to play for me since I don't travel in groups. The hoppers are almost assured to destroy half of your gear if you have to fight just one of them in melee (as often happens if you burn up all your shots trying to get rid of the endless horde walking through the closed doors and climbing the stairs to get you.) 3. This, as was said above, sounds like the latest hack. I do find that G gets accidentally tapped often when I am trying to press F, causing several items of gear to have gotten lost. I remapped my throw key and haven't had a problem since. 4. I almost never lay prone with the mosin since I am rarely sniping in a location with a clear shot from the prone position. I haven't noticed this problem from crouched though. 5. Never seen this happen. 6. I haven't found morphine a single time since the patch. 7. This happens constantly. It seems to happen most often when there are three or more zombies very close to me and I am doing a reload. I am not sure why that is, but once it happens, the gun won't do anything for me most of the time until I log out and log back in. More than once a snaploader that had been in it was gone entirely from my inventory after the reload. I know the zombies aren't hitting me, so not sure what it is. 8. Haven't seen this bug happen. 9. Framerate on a busy server jumps around a lot now with the latest patch and zombie spawning. It will be fine one minute and then suddenly jumping and crawling the next. I expect this will fix a little in the next patch.
