Zombo is right... its to stop defeated players in a big gun fight from running straight back, reclaiming their stuff and joining back in. Its also to put a price on when you die, make players a little less gun-ho or "deathmatchy" -
I stumbled across a wrecked town just last night... the name escapes me but it was the only place I'd seen with such devastation, burnt out houses all over the place. It was not far from the helicopter crash site near the wrecked church, mid map area. Sure someone will hop on the thread to offer its name

No I just think when you were playing as a friendly you were just not that good at handling the high risk situations.... KoS is the lowest risk action and the easiest, especially when you have the drop on your target

It takes about 20 mins to tool up to a *reasonable* standard right? I've said this before if you go round killing people (newspawns) because your a douche then for each min someone is under 30 mins since last respawn then you get 3 mins added to your wait when you eventually die before you can respawn.... So if your a total douche and spend all day killing new spawns essentially ruining the game in an act of vandalism then when you eventually die you could be spending hours or even days thinking about what you've done before your allowed to rejoin :-)

I fear the weapon availability balance is about right. Make weapons and ammo scarce especially assault weapons then when someone finds one they will be God like. Also worse still (and very very likely) that scarce assault rifle will end up in the hands of some ass-part troll who will then set about ruining the game for everyone. [EDIT] I think other weapons such as the machete need to be much much much much much more effective. I was on a server being trolled by two northern sister shagging inbreds. I'd been killed then 20 mins later ran into them again as they were spawn trolling... under fire I got into the only building in town with no rooms so shut the door and stood right behind it machete raised to hit the guy with the m4 who was chasing me.... The gimp was so unskilled he just charged in opened the door AND was too slow to shoot me before I'd hit him in the head with the machete... of course it had no real effect on him and I was gunned down... So in short, make melee weapons much more deadly

Why is development time being poured into more new towns?

I would of guessed more towns are added because its not work done by the coding dev team but more the art team... am I on the right track? I'd assume the team is divided into functional groups? I'd rather more towns than having some guys sitting on their butts picking their collective noses [Edit] ah... see the dude above has said as much :-) -
I was observing with a mate who did this.... Me binocs, him high power scope. Watching a town see two guys running through... then after a min watch them as they encounter another player who from their actions it looks like they don't know him. Now this is a critical time isn't it... we all know it.... wouldn't it be a shame if those chaps heard the "zing" of a mosin bullet zipping past them.... Well me matey fired then we watched 3 players all jump at the same time... kinda run round in circles for a few seconds then all split and run in different directions.... I'd of been sure the lone player would of got gunned down by the other two but seems they were all too busy flapping like headless chickens :D

People complain about no incentive to *not* shoot fresh spawns so how about this.... when you shoot someone, for each min under 10 mins old that person was you get 10 min added to the 30 min wait next time you die? We getting warmer with this idea? Before you know it one session of trolling cost you hours of gameplay. We could also have a public leader board showing who has had the highest waits :-) -
One "Used" bullet I assume? :D

The problem is if everyone did that, this game you enjoy playing... would fail, it would become unplayable, thus as I said it's vandalism, no less so than trying to hack the hub servers and bring it all down. -

The prolific killing of fresh spawns isn't even playing the game! its nothing more than a mindless act of vandalism on the game... in fact the wording of the OP does remind me of a mindless pond-scum vandal talking... -

I just sit back happy in the knowledge that the PvP peeps are going to get real bored when this game goes in the direction its intended, such as when the code is sorted to the point a server can host many many times more zombies. I understand people get desperate I get it there will be trouble at times but I have no time for strict PvP douches... sound strong? well its because there are countless options for playing PvP, so many games but hardly any survival game in comparison... so when your playing strict PvP on DayZ in my mind your a thoughtless douche.... There I said it. -

Why is it when a lone player or perhaps two players encounter a larger number of players that the larger number of players default to making lone player trust them? (put gun away, even put down gun) because they can? If they want to demonstrate trust perhaps the single player should get to keep hold of their weapon? its not like one guy vs 3 has a great chance of surviving any which way if it goes south but makes for a calmer lone player? Thoughts from those that have had these kinds of encounters....

Can we post links? just watched "day 6" of the dayz diaries (blackout's vids) on youtube.... bizarre three way negotiation that resulted in a nice group photo! so funny, but good example of how things can go well :-) FYI, vid is nowt to do with me.
