    Man, folk just aren't nice in this area of the forums. I'll stop contributing now.
  2. Man if there's ONE thing that sucks about DayZ in all forms, it's the fact that you can't shut yourself in somewhere and catch a breath. Please, someone make it so that zombies have collision and you can close a door on them. I'd personally go an extra mile and make it so the zombies then attack the door and it has an energy bar, so you have a good few minutes before they break in - but if you combine, I dunno, toolbox with lumber, you can barricade it and make it so they can't get in. That's one of the main focal points of any zombie apocalypse fantasy - holding up somewhere that you've secured - even if only by closing the door.

    Thanks again for the tips. I did only just find food on steps for the first time today actually. Well, a soda can. Useful to know about shooting the windows in hospitals!

    Cheers Sula. So here's my next issue. I have the Chernarus map: dayzdb.com/map/chernarus and I thought I'd use it as a guide for where to find food/medical supplies etc. and I started out around Cherno and ran up the coast and just finished up in Kamyshovo. Along the way I saw markings on the map (the hospital for example) but when I get there it's not even available to go inside. I knew that the mod didn't have many buildings you could enter but I thought it would have more than just a tiny amount. Pretty much 90% of the stuff on that map isn't available. I did manage to employ the advice here in picking up the axe. I think it's because I have't had an empty slot for the axe to go in. Still never once found any food in my travels today. Also need to figure out how to find bandages if there are no hospitals to go in. I play Epoch by the way. The End Days server.
  5. Just a basic question here. I thought I'd see if my character gets saved after I log out and then log back in. Been playing the Epoch mod. I acquired a few trinkets, logged out, restarted (different server probably) and don't get back the same guy with the same stuff. Is that normal for these mods or is there something basic I've overlooked? Cheers.

  7. I thought I'd test the water with the mod version of DayZ. Played standard, Epoch and a bit of Origins. If I'm being brutally honest, and not trying to add too much dramatic emphasis, I'd have to say it was one of the worst gaming experiences I've had. Spent about 6 hours in total. 98% of that was jogging. During that time I met two people. TWO. Neither responded to my chat, seconds before slaying me. Gave up trying to kill zombies when I realised it was practically unrealistic, using a hand gun or an axe - I never found anything better. Gave up trying to close the door behind me because zombies can just pass through them. A not funny joke that ALL versions seem to share. So if you're in a position of bleeding, unable to heal yourself while being chased and unable to defend yourself, running around a forest with a map but no bearing - time and time again, it renders the exercise futile. I can't see me playing again. Which is a damn shame because it looked like fun on the various youtube channels. If the above issues were ironed out it might be ok. Only redeeming thing is that I was genuinely terrified. Felt like I was gonna puke with fear. So not all bad. Maybe standalone will be better.

    Oh and can I buy food anywhere? and if so how? I've seen places where you can buy weapons but died of starvation before finding out if they had food lol.

    Cheers. There's been a good few times though when I've seen a hatched in a barn that can't be picked up. Ever get that?
  11. So I updated DayZ Epoch via Commander and today I can't seem to play on the first couple of servers I found. End of Days says I'm running 1.0.4.2 and its version is 1.0.4.1 (maybe that means whoever runs the server isn't up do date so I'm not compatible?) Then another server said the same thing (except that one seemed like it was many versions older). Is this normal and should I then just check the box for 'hide wrong mod version'?

    Thanks a lot for the info Salva. That shit saved my ass! I had been running for a few thousand meters from a zombie, each of us running at about the same pace and I had no confidence in my shooting abilities (besides, each time I'd turn to fire it would zig zag) so I thought... hmmm, run into some branches eh, surely not. But I had no choice - I went into the branches of a pine tree and sure enough, it couldn't get me! so I carefully aimed at the head and down it went. Still not totally sure what people are saying about zombies and buildings. Are we saying they can go in but just can't 'run' in? I was in the north east air field today and, dammit, all I have is this big ol' loud shot gun. So I go into this little barracks and I'm follow in, struggling to close the door and a zombie gets me, so I turn around and fire, then close the door. Then bam - 10 zombies somehow end up getting through the door (it's now open - shurg) and I have no choice but to take out each one. But they did walk and not run. So if we're saying they can't run in buildings and then that's a good way to lose them, then that makes sense. But I wish they could stay out of them. Currently my character is desperate for food and is loitering around the aforementioned airfield, trying to run around, Benny Hill style, with a queue of zombies behind while trying to loot. Really frustrating. Not so much as a can of beans. Guess I could do with finding a quieter weapon but again, my problem is - stuff is in buildings, zombies surround buildings, can't realistically take zombies out. So yeah, currently exploring Chernarus. Thanks for the suggestion. Is there any method to finding friendlies? or do they pretty much not exist in the mod? I know you mentioned finding places where people gather but that to me sounds more like, places where people gather to snipe each other.
  15. Ah cool. I just managed to re-join. After playing on a server and leaving I saw the it was hilighted on the list. I added to favs but that makes it leap up to the top of the list. I thought it sort of refreshed and I'd lost it but it's there. Cheers :)

    I'll give those a try then. But I just pulled up Epoch and straight off, zombie legged it towards me, zig-zagged, then I was shooting by aiming straight at its head and every shot hit his shoulders, took about 5 shots to die. So Mr Sinister, does that sound in keeping with what you were saying or am I playing a different version of the Epoch mod? Edit: another example. Go into a house, zombies in pursuit. Trying to open the first door after the main front door but I think all that's happening is that the door behind me is opening and closing. Meanwhile a few zombies pile in, I turn around and empty a mag into one, it does nothing. Now I have no weapons and die. But, the 'deploy bicycle' is ace.

    lol, easy! that's my whole point, it was prohibitively difficult due to bad programming. (see zombie collision and inability to deal with them, especially when starting out). I don't think I need to play a harder version. plus, no friendly folk seem to play. And it feels like I could play for days and never see another soul. Better to get a few mates together from the get go, then you could deal with zombies better and at least have some company. and again, total lack of 'you are here' function in the map means running for hours through forests, wondering if you've left the map.

    Hmm, I don't really recall the Epoch mod being much different in those respects. I'll try it again and see if the zombies are more sensible. Do tell, I'm intrigued.

    Sounds interesting. What version of the mod is it? Sounds like Origins. But, the key questions are: do zombies still walk through doors in that version? and is killing them any less rediculous and haphazard?

    lol. And yes, I was genuinely terrified of the zombies in the mod. At one stage, running around in the dark, my shadow cast against some passing foliage. Shit my pants.
  22. Hi Guys, Disclaimer: total noob, please don't flame! I've been watching most of the popular DayZ video diaries. Mainly Standalone but a bit of mod. Really fancy having a go but not keen on the idea of paying for the game quite yet as it still seems rife with bugs and/or primitive game play. I saw that arma 2 is available for very cheap now so just wondering if the mod version of DayZ is still a viable option as a cheaper way to test the water? Is that mod and all the relevant servers still going strong? If so, do I just buy arma 2 and download the mod for free? or... do you still have to pay for the mod separately anyway? Thanks :)

    Suggestions on how to start playing

    Ok, almost there. Got DayZ mod running from within DayZ Commander. But when I play it, it sort of looks a little old or something. I installed the mod via the install menu from Commander, just the regular DayZ mod. The inventory doesn't look like I've seen in other videos and the hungry/thirsty icons are tightly grouped together (slightly overlapping). I mean, this could even be because my version is actually much newer than the videos I'm looking at, lol. What do you advise? EDIT: ah, I've just tried another server and it's slightly different (icons are normally spaced). Can different servers play slightly differently?

    Thanks iBane :) hopefully should be fun! Quick question folks, I installed Arma 2 and now it's downloading Operation Arrowhead. Because I just bought this PC and it's my first SSD, it's just filled up :/ so wondering if I can uninstall regular Arma 2 if DayZ requires Op Arrowhead, or does it need both? Secondary question (points if you can answer this one) seeing as my main OS SS drive is full, I decided to install Arrowhead on my other internal D drive. Reckon this will work ok? or should they be on the same drive as windows/each other?

    Fair enough. Hopefully simple then. Cheers :) As per your recommendation I bought 'combined operations'. It's currently downloading 'Arma 2' and under that I see two more available 'Operation Arrowhead' and 'Operation Arrowhead Beta'. Any good?
