When Does The " ALPHA!" Excuse End?
bodybagger2430 replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
It is a paraphrased version of what I (and others) have said many times. I have experience working on alphas and betas and even patching with the fallout 3 overhaul kit for both fallout 3 and New Vegas, we did research on such things and found that Alpha was for adding and getting a bare bones framework, and beta was for fixing. you might consider a "beta 1" or "alpha 2" where all the bells and whistles and little additions are added, but that is the jist of it. Alpha is add, beta is fix. unfortunately the public alpha and people who don't realize this adds to confusion and bogs down the devs attempt to create the game, causing delays and bugs to be missed. We experienced this when someone leaked an alpha of our mod and people started screaming about it, to the extent that even I told them to kiss off and go back to the previous version and let us work. -
Stop With the "This is Russia BS"
bodybagger2430 replied to Insane Ruffles's topic in General Discussion
I remember the "brony fire axe" on inside DayZ, it was a hoax, but the idea is great. what if we had other types of spraypaints and by combining them on items we got easter egg items, like a fireaxe with a dayZ logo on it? or be able to put "veteran skins" on certain items like the m4? (tally marks for kills and such) or anarchist/redpunk weapons? it would be a great idea I think. however it leads to the obvious flaw of having to reskin the weapon and CLONE the weapon like they do now. Hopefully they can make it like the attachment system in the future. -

What dayz could have been without zombies
bodybagger2430 replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Wrong. Because no matter what you have people who will shoot on sight, then turn to the conga line of zombies forming and open up with the M4 while zig zaging to make sure they cannot be hit by them. Will it cut down? yes, I will concede on that point. And really that is all we want. hopefully once the new CoD or battlefield 295 come out the KoS CoDsuckers will leave and we can get back to a real post apocalypse instead of CoD blackops 3: minecraft I do however agree on the second point this NEVER should have been an open alpha. People have no regard for what an alpha is, and how to work with it. Alpha testing should be done by invitation only, and by the dev team only. They have a focused plan that is in play in an internal and can make surgical strikes at the problems without people going onto forums and raging, and thus causing more chaos and confusion as we are now. The team is overwhelmed with both good and bad communication from the public, and it is making their jobs harder, thus bogging them down with development and making things go slowly enough even Gabe Newell and valve is giving them funny looks. Dear God, can you imagine if half life 3 was early access and how slowed it's metaphorical development would be? -
What dayz could have been without zombies
bodybagger2430 replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Can it be shifted from PvP? Yes, easily (actually probably not engine wise). Should it be so drastically shifted, nah. How do you do it? Weapons no longer hurt players, only zombies. 90% of the playerbase disappears, mass and rampant screaming for refunds, dayZ burns in a ball of fire, and we have Minecraft with zombies only and people find OTHER ways to grief each other. The only way to prevent rampant KoS'ing and PvP is to have "safe zones" or "safe servers" like in games such as WoW. You enter the area and boom weapons no longer can be fired and people can no longer be harmed, you have to leave the zone in order to do it. I'm sorry but if that happens and is part of the game, I would hunt dean down personally and demand a refund. The PvP and fear of the KoS raiding JACKWADS who have no sense of accountability for their actions and just want to play call of duty, are what add to the atmosphere of fear in this game, you remove that and make everything safe, and it becomes boring. It's like sitting in a save room in resident evil and going "look how much fun I am having!" It MIGHT work to make another game without zombies, and just focus on the human aspect, but it would have to be done RIGHT, and there is a fine line. Just like there is for dayZ. Those guys focused on pure apocalypse and may they have as much success as dayZ and fallout and such, but dayZ focused on zombies. Sitting around saying "should have, could have, would have" does nothing but irritate people on both sides. ...how was this topic related? now that I think about what I've been reading, it seems to only be here to say "this game sucks, and you are all idiots for playing it" -
Concerned about the Sawn Off
bodybagger2430 replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Well then in theory it's possible the pellets are missing because they are spaced too far forward/behind/left/right of the target, thus causing less damage because the pellets are being hitscanned rather than projectiles. Flaw in the projectile itself rather than the shotgun? Edit: clarification and spelling -
Stop With the "This is Russia BS"
bodybagger2430 replied to Insane Ruffles's topic in General Discussion
Ah, I never played Arma 2 nor dayZ mod, so I dunno. What I know is solely from looking around me and observing the use of NATO weapons, the presence of US tactical shirts, and the UN helmets. All I know is that the UN and NATO were there, and shit went down. Thus the abundence of said weapons. -
Concerned about the Sawn Off
bodybagger2430 replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
I can vouch something is wrong. I made a topic about it. Long story short: cornered in a barn by a group, shot a guy less than 5 meters with both barrels, saw the pellets hit him and around him, he walks away with no damage and not even bleeding. Me and my buddy are both dead. I've never carried a sawn off again, It is a shitgun as someone else said. Until some balancing is done it will be little more than a novelty. "found a shotgun! *point and laugh, pull out pistol, shoot guy in head*" -
Where have all the experimental servers gone?
bodybagger2430 replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
I think you hit the nerve as to why they aren't being released yet. It NEEDS loot respawn. The only possible way to make such servers viable right now is on low restart servers, everything else will be looted so bad that you can hear the cockroaches stomach's rumbling in elektro from Berezino -

Chernussian Movement of the red star member perhaps (I Assume they are some kind of civilian militia type thing since the military seems to be Chernussian defense force)? There are some drops that should make you look around and wonder what the story is, and perhaps be able to work out that story. It's something I loved in Fallout 3 and NV is finding all these notes near skeletons or walking into a bedroom and seeing a couple of skeletons holding each other in bed, or opening a personal shelter and finding a skeleton with a pistol and bottles of water. It made you look at it go "I wonder" something that Chernarus is sadly missing right now. But I hope to see in the future as lore is revealed and written -

What dayz could have been without zombies
bodybagger2430 replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Well I can think of a few things here for this topic. First of all it would be Arma: Operation we killed most of humanity but continue shooting each other cause we are bored. Second: Wasteland 2 on steam, wasteland 1, fallout 3, Fallout New vegas, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Metro 2033. Want the point and click "LOL ALL MY GEAR POST APOCALYPSE LOLOLOL!" affair? There ya go. Want pure survival? Go play freaking minecraft. Want something that blends both genre's and is actually trying to do something? Stick with DayZ and see how it develops once beta is out, and maybe pop in to see what H1Z1 is doing. (or rust if you want to pay for another early access game) Let's be honest, from what I have seen the last few weeks and nearly 200 hours, this is not a public alpha or project. The devs, with their lack of info on what is being done and needs tested, experimental servers going down so quick, the seemingly scatterbrained development of items, they are testing this game themselves and writing it as they see fit. The only input from the community seeming to be "what small bells and whistles should we throw in just to appease the people and get them off our backs till the next patch." I can't blame them anymore, they try to appease the masses saying that zombies are too easy? Massive backlash from the KoS community about the fireaxe not being a one shot. They try to develop new survival items and gear "I want more tacticool military cosplay stuff! you guys suck!" Move spawns to east coast so people will start heading west and going inland to explore?"I WANT MY ELEKTRO DEATH MATCH! GO TO BEREZINO SO I CAN KILL J00!" At this point I'd hire someone to follow the forums and report what the major complaints are, then make something even more annoying. Footsteps too loud/low? Release a hotfix that makes it so every step you take is the sound of nails on a chalkboard recorded live by members of the team. Weapons too inacurate? Make it so that every shot causes your guy to spin 360 degrees and start singing trololol. TL:DR Too much complaining + not enough actual feedback anymore = Public alpha ruined for everyone by jerks, you will get what the devs say now, and you will have little to no input. -
They got past the captcha and anti bot stuff? Even I have problems with some of that stuff. DEAR GOD THEY ARE GETTING SMARTER! THE RISE OF THE MACHINES IS UPON US! EVERYONE GRAB YOUR FIRE AXE AND HEAD FOR THE HILLS!

This patch is littertly game breaking.
bodybagger2430 replied to Naberius (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I hate to agree with a rage topic, especially a misspelled one, but as of the last patch my game appears to be almost, actually unplayable. I am currently staring at the server browser. I have adjusted filters, followed topics saying the same, but Servers are almost never appearing. When the odd server does appear it does one of 3 things; Kick me screaming about PBO's (what is a PBO?), "wait for host" eternally, or permanent night with no people, which makes me a sad because even in local servers my game appears to be perma-night Most of my medical supplies are being eaten, specifically morphine and splints. because of increased rubberbanding since the last patch which has caused me more than once to fly off a staircase and break legs because I am sprinting on a road then rubberband a 100 meters back to the house I was in a minute prior and continue sprinting thus flying off the staircase. My game is also behaving uncontrollably on exit, doing the same thing every time; Spin eternally and not respond till I ctl alt Del and close the task manually. In addition despite how I tweak my filters and however many video guides/topics I follow, not a single experimental server ever appears. Not even the German one that used to be the only option I had, so going to EXP is out of the option. I still have fun when the game decides to work, it's just that seems to be fleeting moments now. -
Found an Engrave 1911, shoved a magazine in, later emptied that magazine into someone who didn't know how to breach
bodybagger2430 replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Funny, I found one in exactly the same place, then reluctantly ditched it for an FNX so that I could carry more medical supplies and have more ammo per mag.I LOVE the 1911, it is such an awesome gun, however in the game there is little reason to carry it over an FNX if you are going to use a .45. I miss my punisher looking 1911 though -
I wanted to enjoy night, I really did. I got a pistol light, a spare rail and weapon light for the m4 which I don't like using. A gas lamp, and played normally, come night, nothing I did could salvage it. It was too dark to see despite my monitor's brightness being extremely high and contrast being pretty decent (enough to see in even amnesia at some points others couldn't), and I blundered around looking for the full experience, trying to SURVIVE the night. iInstead I ended up Jacking my gamma up and stumbling to a bush to log out. I had no ability to see anything but the cone in front of me, as opposed to the gradient of a real light, tried looting a tent for my spare RIS rail, just to have the entire area go dark, and only certain items light up unless I held my head just right. I constantly found myself ready to bang my head on the keyboard as zombies charged from 20 kilometers to meet me, when I couldn't even see more than 3 meters, it was like playing metal gear as a guard and being limited to yelling WHAT WAS THAT NOISE!? at every sound. So I shut off my light, jacked up my gamma, hobbled to the nearest bush, logged out and went to play something else, or at least try to find an X64 server. And X64 wasn't much better, it was about 20 minutes of day, with 30 of night, I would see a zombie come screaming toward me from about 50 meters as I approached a clinic just for everything to black out resulting in me having to get out my .45, shoot it, then deal with the other zombies coming screaming toward me from all across the map until day came. I was ready to find the nearest person, give them all my stuff and jump off a building and not come back till beta started, it was unbearable. Still have my lights, but I tossed the gas lamp for being a giant "SHOOT ME!" beacon however, I'd prefer to just not play at night anymore till the lights are turned up a bit. TL:DR Me with flashlight: Hurr I can't see 3 feet in front of me! Fresh spawn 2 feet away: WHAT WAS THAT NOISE!? Raider: *headshot on both from gamma exploiting* Edit: This is also THAT ONE GUY who played Doom 3 mildly irritated, but not having an problems with the flashlight and darkness.

I hate KoS but I won't deny an awesome story. Also that thread was a masterful piece of troll, and this all coming from a medic who is fairly new to the game, and a veteran (observer) of gamefaqs troll threads. You acted in the moment to the unknown, no need to feel bad, I did at first for my first kill as well, analyze it, try taking a different path next time and see what works. All you can do, it's no different from learning to play team fortress 2, Banjo Kazooie, or anything else. you make choices, screw up, and try again. That unknown is what MAKES games like dayz and its various spinoffs. No Regret, No remorse, Only madness.

Alright, I am finally concerned about the standalone
bodybagger2430 replied to JimmyGate's topic in General Discussion
The thing most people don't realize is that the alpha is not bug quashing while working on the main stuff. The alpha is that outline before a research paper that shows all the high points and topics. you get each topic working at a very BASIC and barebones level. The ultimate goal is the beta, where all bug squashing goes and the refinement and adjustments go. They may make some of these beta adjustments on the fly as needed when someone has free time or when it gets to the point the devs are smashing their heads on the computer cause of something, but for the most part that stuff waits till beta. If you want a fully functioning releasable product by, say, EA you wait till beta. right now what we see is just the tip of the iceberg. Now as for H1Z1, the video posted a bit earlier is very nice, and looks like what DayZ will hopefully become, however they are in closed beta, not alpha. so things are much smoother and more friendly, however if you look they also have the same issues dayz does with night. DayZ clone? you bet. Better? maybe, maybe not, we will see. We can only judge it once the games are both complete. -

[Experimental 0.44] Zombies are fixed?
bodybagger2430 replied to scriptfactory's topic in General Discussion
I had a zombie walk up the stairs recently while I was scavenging for items in a house most people don't visit (found a canteen, you chuckleheads on whatever server it was missed :P) it scared me half to death and I was just punching it in the face with no weapon as I was fresh spawn, I noticed as long as I aimed for the head I could stun lock them into permanent get up -> collapse animations and they MIGHT get 1 shot on me if I can't move around them. Very tense, but very rewarding and fun. I would say keep melee at 2 hits minimum for items like the fire axe, so all melee is viable, not just one God like weapon. right now it is absurd because of the bug that causes even the fireaxe to require 5-6 hits, and everything else till the end of time (3 minutes with a splitting axe the other day, this is a known bug with experimental) Low tier weapons taking about 5 hits, higher like the hoe and splitting axe should take 3 and the fireaxe 2-3 (for zombies, not people, that would be more difficult to balance) -
Melee is now a Joke in Experimental- Fists more effective then Fire-Axe
bodybagger2430 replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
It took me aroudn 20 swings and 3 minutes to kill a single zombie with the splitting axe, contrast that with the 20 hit stun lock the fists do if you keep hitting them in the head, it's easier to take on a single zombie with fists than it is with any weapon right now. it also makes me feel bad ass, like I could rip its head and spine off and hold it up and scream making all the new spawns run from me. -
What's that one quote from around here? "there are no bandits, there are no heroes, just people making decisions" I always give them a chance if possible, I had a guy dead to rights magnum on his head and could have killed him, but I shouted "I'm a medic, put it down and I will let you go!" He drops his mosin on the ground and we exchange conversation about the good places in balota to try and find med supplies and canteens and then when I mention people ambushing me and he gives me his Long range scope in exchange for my PU scope. another time I shot at a guy on sight entering my barn with weapons drawn casue he LOOKED the part of a KoS raider. I then gave him a chance to stop. Still got killed, but I died knowing I gave him a chance to redeem himself, one that he squandered, and I missed my chance to win the firefight by using my sawn off instead of mosin or magnum. Learn and move on. Everyone makes a decision, be it KoS and play raider, play bandit, or play hero. Sometimes a pre-emptive strike is necessary, sometimes you need to defend yourself. Most likely it was a new player with so much adrenaline thinking about keeping his stuff that he couldn't see straight, it's encounters like that that get your blood pumping, and making bad decisions. you have to keep cool, think and make the decision that seems best at the time.
-
So as you can see from my sig, I am a wandering medic. my buddy and I were heading to balota and elektro to pick up more medical supplies when we duck into a barn. He heard gunshots in the distance, I didn't. we ducked into a barn to look for supplies/eat/drink and we hear heavy breathing next to us from sprinting, we duck behind the crates both covering a seperate door, knowing we were at balota on a FULL server. I get my sawed off out terrified as we hear people surrounding us. No voices or warnings, I aim at the door, a guy in solid black military gear steps in with a rifle pointed at me, I fire, he jumps back out, not bleeding nothing, a guy shouts "lets be peaceful" I shout "I am a wandering medic and this is my escort, we won't shoot if you don't enter with weapons drawn" I haven't reloaded another guy pops in, chest shots me you are unconscious, "let's be peaceful about this!" from the other guy. My buddy starts emptying his SKS into the other guys chest, meanwhile another guy is shouting about being peaceful, and I'm shouting about how his buddies continued sniping me and he is nothing more than a raiding, lying piece of well you know. A few seconds later "you are dead" So I ask what was the right choice here, I didn't declare myself until after I shot, no but they never did either, given the gear, the entering with weapons drawn, surrounding the barn with most likely 3 people, I assumed they were raiders/bandits and emptied both barrels in the first guy I saw, what should I have done differently, if anything? At this rate, after having been shot so many times my buddy is ready to give up on dayZ and just go CoD and shoot anyone he sees including fresh spawns, I don't really want to be part of the problem, but have to agree it is very disheartening.
-
Thanks for all the advice, right now in hindsight I believe my buddy did hear gunshots, these fellows finishing off someone, they were raiders, not even bandits, just KoS raiders. The choices I should have made were to head upstairs, pull out my magnum and just blow a hole in the guys face instead of using the sawn off set to fire both barrels at once. and I should have reloaded, I completely forget this game requires you to manually reload, even with snap loaders, so I didn't reload, which would have at least scared off the second guy even if it didn't hurt him. In real life even a single pellet from a shotgun would cause major damage, and I was banking on it being more realistic and being able to drop the guy by doing the killing floor thing and emptying both barrels in his chest. and finally, stick to the magnum/mosin or .45 SKS setup, the shotgun is effective when you put it in someones mouth yes, but the problem is that you won't get that close unless in a building, and that is more inventory space I could use for med supplies.
-
Correct, if I had gone above on the catwalk I would have had a nice view a chest or headshot since the guy was wearing a boonie hat. The big question is was it misguided heroes, or an ambush?
