Blunt honesty? I wouldn't even consider paying a subscription fee for Day Z unless it was significantly, significantly expanded (I'm talking in the neighborhood of about 1000% more content and map size than what we've got now with Chernarus) and even then it's unlikely. I paid $30 for ARMA 2 specifically to play this mod, so I wouldn't mind buying a box. But a subscription fee on top of that? Nope. If big budget MMOs like Guild Wars 2 and PlanetSide 2 are adopting free to play models there's no reason something like Day Z should require a sub. There are plenty of people willing to host servers themselves, I don't see why I should pay for 'official' ones.

They ought to have a chance to spawn in deer stands if they don't already. Trying to raid the international airfield is about as fun as shooting yourself in the dick with all the server hoppers. Nothing quite like spending 10+ minutes scoping the area out to make sure it's safe and then having some cunt spawn in behind you and shoot you in the back as soon as you enter the barracks.

Things I wish were never introduced to DayZ
Maderas replied to ForcefulCJS's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The fucking hacks. I've died so many times under extremely fishy circumstances lately that I'm not even really playing seriously anymore, I just run around willy nilly and do random shit. It's too annoying to play it safe and live for 3 or 4+ days only to run into some dickweed with godmode who absorbs entire clips of ammo and one shots you. -
POLL:What kind of person do you think YOU would become in a zombie apocalypse?

I've a feeling the vast majority of this forum would be option #10: dead within a day or two. -
Is there some kind of invinicibility hack, or WTF?
Maderas posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Seriously. I was willing to write this off the first couple times it happened, but now it's gotten to the point that it's ridiculous. First occurrence: I'm running outside of Cherno, some guy in a ghillie suit starts chasing me and shooting at me with his pistol. I manage to pop off three Winchester shots into this guy's chest during our running gunfight through the woods, he's spurting blood everywhere like a broken ketchup bottle... still finally manages to kill me when I'm forced to stop and bandage myself to prevent death by blood loss. Second occurrence: Running outside of Cherno with an axe at night. Some fucknugget (again in a ghillie suit) with a silenced M9 demands I stop and tell him what I'm doing or he'll shoot me. Knowing he's the same guy who tried to kill me at the apartment moments earlier (as I heard him saying "don't kill him yet" on his mic when he ran up to stop me, apparently being too stupid to realize he'd already hit CAPSLOCK), I said fuck it and buried an axe in his face. His butt-buddy was terrible at aiming and somehow only wings me with an entire clip of AK, during which time I'm able to chop his crippled friend in the head at least 4 times with the axe, but he somehow clings to life until said butt-buddy reloads and kills me. Third occurrence: My friend dies while we're looting a downed helicopter, I head back to Chernogorsk with the Bizon SD I recovered so we can link up quickly again tomorrow. Somebody opens up on me with a silenced weapon of their own while I'm running into the apartment my friend logged out in. Not wanting to be a bitch, I go prone in the corner and wait a few minutes to see if he's going to pursue the fight. He comes inside and walks right into my line of view, eating at least a solid second of sustained full auto fire (like 10-15 bullets minimum, Bizon has like 60 something bullets to a clip) to the chest before he swivels around and kills me instantly. I spawn in Cherno and opt to run back and check the apartments, thinking that surely the dude must have died from blood loss immediately after killing me... nope. He's still camping the roof with nary a care in the world, sniping every weaponless random he sees. Fourth occurence: Pretty much the same shit as above, only this time I only have an M1911 and I'm trying to hide behind a cabinet in the restaraunt in Elektro. Two PKers are murdering everybody in the street, when they come in to investigate I pop one in the head with 3-4 shots when he comes around the corner and spots me, he shoots me once with his sniper rifle and I die instantly, my screen filled with the sight of his head spraying blood all over like a power sprinkler. At this point I'm half convinced there's a fucking godmode hack floating around along with all the lolnuke and teleport crap that's already going on. Every time I've been shot by a gun larger than a Makarov I either get crippled and go into shock or my character just instantly dies. I've likewise got into firefights with legit players who actually died in a similar manner when I was able to score a hit on them. How is it then that some of these players are bullet sponges? Are they cheating? Does having a high latency make you essentially invulnerable unless you get hit 50 times? I'm leaning towards the former, as I notice it's usually the douchenozzles loaded with military gear who come to Cherno with the express purpose of shooting unarmed survivors who are mysteriously impossible to kill, and those are exactly the type of people I'd expect to be using hacks in the first place. -
Before somebody blows a gasket, no, I'm not suggesting they be removed. I just don't personally see what the point in using one is. Sure, the speed and storage is nice but you can hear the damn things from so far away that you're essentially broadcasting your location to every player within a thousand or so meters to come and murder you, so they seem impractical to use outside of maybe clans using them to come pick up their buddies on the coast. Driving them around to loot attracts way too much attention from what I've seen. I feel so stressed out every time I'm driving one that it's almost a relief when they do inevitably end up getting stolen.

Check the bug forum, it seems to happen a lot. The game is in a pretty bad state right now as far as hacking and exploits, but it's an alpha, so hopefully they'll get the kinks worked out. My biggest concern is that a lot of this stuff may be impossible to really prevent without big changes to ARMA 2 itself, which is most likely out of Rocket's hands.

Am I the only person who dislikes vehicles?
Maderas replied to Maderas's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Did you not read anything else in the post? Yeah, they're fast and have storage. They're also prone to getting stolen no matter how well you hide them and they alert everybody nearby. I wouldn't ever want to store anything overly valuable in them. It's really not difficult to figure out where somebody in a vehicle is heading if you hear one pass on the road. The way I found my first one was that I beelined straight for the nearest town after hearing its engine from about a mile away and managed to shoot the two people in the back and then steal it. I ditched it in the woods the next day because I got tired of attracting gunshots from halfway across the map, though. -
The netcode in this game seems absolutely horrible to me, honestly. Sometimes it feels like it's a complete crapshoot whose bullets will register in a firefight, it's almost better to just sneak away (but way more boring). Hopefully it's just a problem with the mod which will eventually be sorted, and not a problem with ARMA 2 itself. I haven't tried the vanilla game yet so I don't know what the lag is like there. Anyway, there are numerous PK montages on YouTube where you can clearly see people shooting one another at close range with AKMs and other guns that are supposed to kill in 1-2 hits, yet the other guy will take 5 or 6 before he finally goes down. I've even seen several where they'll come up behind a crouched player looting stuff and start unloading into their back point blank, and the other player will manage to turn around and pop a shot off before they go down.

Is there some kind of invinicibility hack, or WTF?
Maderas replied to Maderas's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I like how the guy in the second video said having invisible/invincible people running around might ruin the game after he's murdered like 10+ people. Gee, you think? -
Seriously, could we have this added? If you like playing on full-ish servers the coast is generally picked over and Cherno/Elektro are gigantic deathmatch clusterfucks. Having one of each wouldn't make the game significantly easier, it would just allow you to head inland faster and avoid being used for target practice by military-geared douchebags who enjoy killing people with no way to defend themselves. Everybody is always quoting Rocket's "most people don't own guns anyway" bit to justify removing Makarovs from spawn, but it makes no sense whatsoever that somebody with the foresight to pack bandages and painkillers wouldn't think to bring a can of food or a bottle of water with him. I don't mind having to scavenge for a gun. What I do mind is having to scavenge for a gun in a place where I'm almost certainly going to be shot down like a dog 2-3 times before I find one. I tried to run straight inland yesterday after being killed several times on the coast and ended up dying from thirst due to getting unlucky spawns with no food or water in the first town I came across.
-
Oh, get over yourself. Do people seriously use the term 'casual'? I thought that was supposed to be a sarcastic sort of in-joke. Getting killed on the coast is already commonplace as survivors like to camp it and kill new players once they have decent gear. I'm not really seeing how it could get worse than it already is, and I notice absolutely no difference in how often I get killed on the coast now vs. what it was when we spawned with food.
-
I don't agree that having ONE can of food and soda would somehow make the game easier, but whatever. All it would really do is significantly cut down on the stupidity one has to experience before being able to go inland. Yeah, sometimes you find food and water at the first northern town you hit. Other times you get unlucky, and if you get unlucky more than once you're going to die from thirst or hunger. But I usually only play on heavily populated servers, and it seems like a lot of people don't see a problem with just switching to empty ones on spawn to get gear, so maybe that's just my choice getting in the way of my fun. The tension of trying to survive other players once you have a couple items to your name is enjoyable, getting used for target practice for fun and dying less than 10 minutes after every respawn until you manage to find a can of beans and escape the coast is irritating. On the subject of people killing players for fun being douchebags, I don't think anybody who kills another survivor is a douchebag. I enjoy fighting other players myself. I enjoy it because of the risk associated with it, though. There's a very large difference in mentality and personality between people who enjoy fighting other players and people who enjoy killing players who have a 0% chance of being able to defend themselves.
-
As I said, I'm honestly hard pressed to imagine how it could get worse than it currently is. The coast is already a shooting gallery on populated servers. And really, how many people are going to run all the way back to the coast just to kill fresh survivors for a can of beans? It would be less dangerous to loot the mostly abandoned towns up north, because there are already a lot of well-geared bandits on the coast killing unarmed survivors for the luls.
-
I like to play with my friends, though. It's a huge draw to the game for many people, I don't think I would have nearly as much fun playing it by myself. And before anybody claims I just enjoy the ezmode loot from our camp, we don't have a camp. We all died and had to start over yesterday for about the hundredth time.
-
Server hopping or playing on low-pop servers just to gear up is kind of lame, though. Just my opinion, but I don't think a 'feature' which half the community regards as cheating should be mandatory to your survival. I know you can get guns from barns, but seriously, try spawning on a server with 45+ people on it and search the area around the coast. It's pretty hard to find anything good, most the buildings you come across either have ammo you can't use or tin cans. This includes the barns and whatnot nearby, not just the cities themselves. Basically everything within a 5 or 10 minute jog of the coastal spawn points is usually empty.
-
You're already a target at spawn, though. That's my point. Let's face it, here. Most people killing survivors on the coast aren't doing it because it's easier than looting an empty grocery store up north. They're doing it because they get off on killing players who can't defend themselves. I even had one who was taking potshots at me yesterday ask me to sing on directional chat if I wanted to live. It's all about their ego, not what they can loot from you. Yesterday I got killed once in Elektro, twice in Cherno, once in Balota, and once in Kamyshovo all within ~10-15 minutes of spawning. It was over an hour of playing before I was able to find a gun and head inland without taking a bullet to the dome, and then I died from thirst trying to find something to drink and had to start over. I'd rather spawn with one food and water and take my chances trying to break the blockade to head inland than being forced to scavenge in coastal towns which are almost always being camped on high pop servers. I know you can hunt, but finding matches, a hatchet, and a hunting knife isn't that easy. On the off chance you somehow spotted all three within a short time period after heading straight inland you would still almost certainly die from thirst/starve before you found an animal to kill.
-
I found a Bizon yesterday, wasn't very impressed with it though. I had an AKS-74 Kobra before that and didn't like it all that much either; it felt like a crappy version of the AKM (granted, the sight is better). Honestly, I think the Winchester might be my favorite gun. It's basically an Enfield that doesn't aggro everything within ten thousand meters.

Why does everyone become hostile the moment they go inland?
Maderas replied to Shadowbeing's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't get the people who go inland and live off hunting animals for days. I get why clans like to hide their shit up there, but random people playing by themselves or in small groups? Is that honestly fun, never running into other players? I'm usually relieved when I die up there as it means I can get back to being around actual people instead of buggy zombies. -
Broken leg? No morphine? Very good

Broken leg? No morphine? Very good
Maderas replied to GodOfGrain's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It is rather annoying when an infected gets one errant swap at you as you pass and it knocks you out, breaks your legs, and causes massive hemorrhaging... especially since the only viable ways to acquire morphine in an emergency is to visit Cherno/Elektro, AKA Deathmatch Lobbies #1 & 2, or crawl for six days to reach Berezino (and possibly still die, since all the people with good gear go there for medical supplies as they're too afraid to go near Deathmatch Lobbies #1 & 2). -
Anybody else noticed a problem with artifacts after downloading the new beta? I'd have problems with it once in a while which would necessitate a reboot of the game, but lately it's happening all the time. Rather annoying. Running a 580 with the 296.10 drivers.

It's probably a very small minority of the community that is here to role play. And the behavior isn't as strange as you make it out to be - watch The Road.

no Side chat = Community Growth will be damaged
Maderas replied to daish's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Voting no. Not having side chat adds to the tension when you encounter another survivor, and I got sick of seeing "PERSON SHOOTING IN ELEKTRO ARE U FRIENDLY???" -
I keep reading people saying you can use tin cans and empty bottles to lure zombies away and sneak past them. How? Seriously. I had an inventory loaded with tin cans yesterday and when I found a house I wanted to sneak into, throwing them into the street did nothing. I even threw one right next to a zombie and he didn't acknowledge it whatsoever (he did spot me laying in a bush from about 50 meters away when he decided to turn around of his own accord, though, so that was nice). Am I missing something?
