    .357?

I typically find Magnums in the schools (top level storeroom) and tops of "taco-stands" in town. (little shops along the street with a ladder at the back to get to the roof) Also have seen them in ruined jeeps. (open top vehicle wrecks that often spawn some good loot.)
  2. It's a fair bit better in experimental (0.48) so hopefully this will be patched into .47 otherwise we'll have to put up with it for a while in stable. Main thing is you need to learn how to avoid zed attacks efficiently while lining up your own attacks, don't expect to go toe-to-toe with them and kill them before they hit/kill you. Once you can dance around the zombie attacks then you can take them out, albeit it will take a bit longer due to the whiffed strikes that normally would connect. I normally have it down to an art with an axe, but on stable it takes 2-4 swings to get a connect typically. On exp. the occasional one misses, but the real difference is I cannot reliably hit them as they pass like I could in .46.

How many ammo do you carry?

Yeah, the zombie hit-boxes are definitely different with .47, but it typically just means you can't reliably hit them on the first swing as they pass by you.Now I just circled around them, wait for them to start turning, then whack them in the head. You used to be able to time a swing to hit them as they passed your side-step, saving a bit of time. I've yet to have one hit me using the same circling side-step that I used in the past though they do react a bit quicker. The occasional swing whiffs, but nothing to be concerned about. Shooting zombies is suicidal with anything but an amphibia. #1 more will be attracted. #2 more will respawn in. #3 players in the area know where you are. Works well enough on low-pops, but doing that on a 40 will likely see you dead or running for your life.

How many ammo do you carry?

Melee works a hell of a lot better than shooting once you know what you're doing. Even the .22 will attract respawned zombies. I can axe 3 at a time without a problem even after the patch. Priority 1 is evading, then timing my swings when I circle into position to strike one. I think the hit-boxing for the new zeds is a bit tighter so it can be a bit tougher to connect until you adjust your natural timing for swings. I only carry an ammo box to carry extra ammo for my team. Typically I carry 2-3 mags for a pistol and another stack of pistol ammo, plus another 40-60 rounds for my Mosin. Other than that I fill up my ammo box with Mosin and SKS ammo that I come across along with any extra mags I find for my team. I don't bother with Shottie, .22, .357, or 9mm ammo since few if anyone on my team rolls with those.

    Friendly or Bandit?

KoS is the way of the coward. Not to insult, just literally the truth. You need to be brave to hold back the fear in order to control an encounter and know that you will kill them only if you need to, but it will be their choice whether they live or die. The simple way out is to shoot the moment you feel you have the upper hand. There's a lot more to be had from this game by fighting through the fear and developing the skills to turn a situation in your favour.
  6. +1 on Barracks. I have found 3, all in barracks. I always take them when I find them, 30 rnd mags I will just strip for ammo to ensure it isn't used against me easily. Other rare-ish item loot spots I've had a lot of luck with: LRS - Schools (top floor storeroom) and very occassionally in garages. PU scopes - Garages & construction sites. Compensators - Only reliable place I can recall is in those large single-storey brick inns. Would like to know of more spots. MP5/mags - Police car roofs. Most people favor piano houses for loot. I find they're good for ammo and occasionally a Blaze, SKS, or Mosin, but I typically find the brick 2-storey with the arched entrance a better loot spot. Often has a gun (top of stairs) and useful stuff like a compass, keys, handcuffs, ammo, plus food in the kitchen. Police stations are complete crap for loot since .46. Hardly worth checking anymore. I think the most useful thing you can find in them these days is an Mp5 mag. Interested to learn of any good spots for pistol mags. I used to scour tents for these, but since .46 they seem a lot more rare. (either that or it's just that more people are scouring the tents)

How many hits from a zombie to kill you?

I believe they mentioned a while ago that when crouched, zombie attacks will mostly (if not always) result in head hits. Simply put, *don't* crouch anywhere near zombies. When engaging zombies *never* stop moving or move in a straight line even if the Zed doesn't look like it's attacking in your direction or has lagged out. (I.e. running away or rubber-banding) They can snap back at a different position than your client knows and you will be on the receiving end of ghost hits.

The sun... so OTT, needs toning down.

I don't find it bad. When you have the sun near the horizon on a clear day it will screw up your vision. Sunglasses do need to be implemented, however only in 1PP. In the morning drives some days in the Winter the morning glare from the sun as you come around a bend can be utterly blinding without a visor. Beware the hun in the sun.

    My boring life.....

Pretty bad luck to go East to West without at least spotting another settlement. :) Power lines aren't great things to follow. Roads are better. You will get better at it, even without a compass, just take a bearing based on a map and travel in a straight line but keep your eyes open for landmarks. A hunting hut, pond, or set of houses/crossroad. Between spelunking in Minecraft and DayZ it's surprising how my real-world sense of direction has improved.

    Your first kill

I have to report my first kill last night. I decided to hook up with guys that run a local server since I had details for their TeamSpeak. Great bunch, quite friendly. I'd mainly decided to join TS because at least that way I knew a few people on the server would know who I was and not shoot me on sight. :) But it turned out to be a good decision because these guys do tend to squad up PVP areas so it's good to know where action is when I want to avoid it. I've roamed with a couple of them for a few days, never seemed to find action. The other night about 6 of them were on and they were working Berezino when I logged on so I was scouting the south end of town from the treeline when I heard single M4 rounds being fired off. Another sniper called spotting 2 geared guys on the hospital roof so I moved back into position and had a clear line on both of them. Over TS I heard 2 other players discussing range and heard 500m so I zeroed to that without even thinking that they were off to the West which was a fair bit further away than me. I called out the shot first and likely sent a bullet way clear over their heads when they turned around and started scanning my direction and popping a couple shots into the trees, so I backed off. The other sniper managed a probable hit on one of them before they left into the building. But last night there were 8 of them on having a go around Balota airstrip. I went to hook up with one of them who was trying to get there after dying a couple of times enroute. (1-shot in the head by a zombie, and then ran afoul of another player as a new-spawn. He was looting up around Dolina when another bandit took notice of him and started firing at him from the police station while I was enroute to meet him there. Unfortunately as I arrived above on the hill the bandit had just left the police station roof and that was when I noticed the 2nd one. They set up camp near the middle of town so I never got a clear shot as my friend took a tactical retreat out of the area since I had spotted the buddy. Met up at another town and I gave him a pistol, clip, and some food as he geared up enroute, eventually making it down to the airstrip to meet up with the rest. We set up camp as the area was quiet and waited for the server restart. I took up position on the South over-watching the coast and rail routes. Just a few min before restart I caught someone in the corner of my eye along the beach, way too close for comfort. I wasn't sure if he saw me or not but I carefully put the bushes between me and him and backed off to the east side of the tent city and then circled around back to the coast since I still had the LRS on the mosin. Everyone else was either in the airfield or between there and the tent city. Then the restart, and I spawned back in at the location where I had first spotted that guy! I wasn't sure if he was going to log back into the server so I retreated a ways back to the West and kept scanning the coast and rail line. That's when I spot him, crawling up the coast with his red backpack, not more than 120m away. So I scope in, confirm over TS that no one is on the coast, call in the shot, and take him out. In hind-sight it was unfortunate that no one else was in a position to cover me on that flank, or at least confirm there wasn't anyone else further up the coast because I would have rather flanked around behind him and given him the option to surrender, disarm him and tell him to get on his way as the airfield was covered. Emotion and adrenaline definitely overpowered strategic thinking especially when covering that flank on my own. Overall it was a good day, my friend had some close calls but the majority of them stayed alive and well, and I helped spot a couple other guys rushing into the airfield from my position.
  11. You can also back up your local install packages that Steam sets up so that if you need to upgrade your machine or what-have you, you don't need to re-download the content provided your backups are up to date.

    WELL..That sucked mr compass

That is, *provided* his Mosin Nagant isn't responsible for the help that those people need. ;)

    Vehicle Discussion

I'd just like to see predominantly civilian class vehicles, unarmoured. Possibly the option to add improvised armour would be interesting. I'm interested in a post-apocalyptic game, not what amounts to a civil war + zombies where players look to either raid military installations or buy arms etc. from gun runners. I don't think bicycles etc. need additional storage because unless they don't plan to implement larger vehicles, there will be little need for cars since people looking to stock their bases will use bikes & spare backpacks since they will be fast enough to get around the map, silent, and harder to spot/tail than a car or truck.

    Your first kill

Today is a special day. I celebrated my first non-kill! While learning the game pretty much every encounter I have been in with other players, friendly or otherwise has been the result of me being ambushed, all unawares. Luckily many times the other person was openly friendly. For about half of the time I had been playing I was tinkering with video settings which appears to had significantly cut down my view distance when not zooming, which left me unknowingly oblivious to other players that I should have seen... In any case I soon fixed that and I was spotting players, however a bad ambush experience from some KoS players that I narrowly escaped left me scarred to the point that even when I saw someone I stalked them but never risked contact. A couple days ago I decided to knuckle up and see who I'd see along the coastal roads on reasonably full servers. Electro was a ghost town so I cut across to Solnichy and started heading North. I was scoping the road North and South but didn't see anyone, so I decided to move up along the trees to the cement/glass factory. Checking it out I was on the 2nd floor finding it had been pretty much looted when I spotted someone passing just outside the window. What a rush! Looked to be a relatively fresh spawn and alone so I quickly headed downstairs, pulled out my .45 and flanked around the building he looked to be headed for. Waited a moment and he came around the corner to stare down my barrel where I told him to "hold it". He complied by shouldering his axe and waving, but he didn't have a mic. Somewhat unnerving being a bit out in the open and not knowing if he was on Teamspeak with someone so I lowered the pistol, waved, and replied to his direct chat before heading off back to the trees. I continued North checking to see that he didn't follow me. As I approached Niz I spotted him again running along the road. I watched from the trees for a while to make sure he was alone, then decided to head into town and led him to some opened canned food, a can opener and a canteen I'd put on the road. So finally, an encounter where I was prepared, collected, and in control! I much prefer the idea of using the can opener in such a situation rather than the .45.
  16. sokaku

    You hear someone say, "Hello?"

At least it means they have a mic. Nothing is quite as unnerving as coming across someone without a mic and acting friendly. Legitimately have no mic, or are you busy calling in support on TeamSpeak? If someone gives you instructions it generally means they have the advantage on you, so it's not like you're going to lose anything more by listening. Frankly if I want someone dead, the last thing I'm probably going to do is give away my position. Talking, or at least listening and following directions has gotten me out of ugly situations at least twice.

after death run back to storage ?

And for the other players that know of, and use what you think is "your" tent? Tents will not break stand-alone, and do nothing more to detract from realism any more-so than respawning and knowing what locations have already been looted, where bandits are lurking, and the like. If you put your tent somewhere convenient you'll likely come back to find it empty or destroyed. If it's a ways out of the way you need to have spent the time to stock it, and then run all the way to get back to it, and still there is no guarantee that by the time you get back to it, the tent has been looted or someone is camping it waiting for restocking players to get busy with their inventory.

    Best. Game. Ever.

Impossible to know until it is finished, and how long that takes, obviously. As many others have said in forums and videos, no other game gets the adrenalin pumping as consistently as DayZ. The real risk though is losing players to games like H1Z1 which will probably be out before DayZ is "released". Provided they can replicate that adrenal rush. However that rush comes from how you choose to play the game. The more value you assign to your avatar with role playing, the more intense the emotional/chemical response to the game. Pleasurable or painful. :)

Where can I commonly find SKS ammo?

Bear Boxes are easy enough to find in fire stations, schools and occasionally supermarkets. I also find them in the various large houses, also check scrapyard car wrecks. Loose ammo is probably similarly spread out but I find it's harder to spot with it's colour. I tend to carry a box worth of SKS for trade as the last friendly guy I met was looking for some and regrettably I didn't have any. Personally I find the hardest boxed ammo to get is .22 but the loose ammo is easier to spot. I usually find enough loose ammo and clips in the tents and boxes I do find last quite a while.

    M4 Silencer

And the post originally referred to mentioned weapons and ammo availability. My point is that I believe the problem is the over-abundance of ammo, no need to remove military grade weapons. A bolt-action will kill you as sure as an M4, but the M4 will require more discipline once you're not likely to be stumbling across hundreds of rounds at a time. (1 trip through the tents and I pass up 200+ rounds of M4 ammo since every magazine is full.) However, if you're referring to what constitutes a "civilian" weapon from a "military" one, no need to split hairs... A civilian weapon would be one expected to be found in a civilian setting in pretty much any country other than the US and Arab nations. Proper hunting rifles, shotguns, and pistols.

    Murphy's law and DayZ

Spawing in Berezino on a decent pop server I wouldn't even bother with NEAF. Given how many people spawn in the area and likely *stay* in the area so that if they die in a firefight they have a chance to make it back and re-equip off corpses. NWAF is generally quite vacant because squads know if anyone dies it's a bloody long hike back from the coast. Dunno if you can even make it without starving from fresh spawn. 20 min would apply more to Balota and NWAF while solo with the tent areas and more structures; Plus the time it takes to move through the area reasonably securely as opposed to a YOLO dash building to building. :)

    Murphy's law and DayZ

I avoid low-pop servers. (<10) My rational is no one is there for a reason. Laggy, hackers, ?? Also, if you are attempting to loot airfields/military, it doesn't matter if you're the only person on the server you simply CANNOT let your guard down. In the 20-odd minutes you've been there I can pretty much guarantee that at least 2 other players were in the vicinity having logged in, made a circuit, and logged out for the next server. These players are also going to be the most dangerous to leave your guard down for as they'll most certainly be armed, and kill you in an instant without warning since you've graciously collected equipment for them. NWAF is the safest IMO, strictly around the tent area though. In the dozen or so times I've been there I've only come across another player there once. Zombie agros are pretty reliable indicators for people ducking through tents. However, occasionally I do head over to the north tech building area and nearly always its doors are wide open. NWAF is closer to Berezino spawns than Balota, it just involves a treck across rough terrain rather than following road & rail. Lots of places to get stocked up with food and basics on the way though just keep a map handy and enjoy the scenery. :)

"We don't want your sniper rifle!"

Random numbers are a quick fix. Weapon sway is coming up according to the videos I've seen from the development side of things. They are adjusting it so that changing view your head will keep up with your mouse, but your aim (dot) and iron-sights will lag behind. The larger/longer the weapon, the longer the delay. This will make pistols a lot more effective in CQs, and should also prompt them to tone down the default dispersion. It should also open the door for SMGs, or bull-pup ARs for building-to-building engagements.
  24. sokaku

"We don't want your sniper rifle!"

Dispersion is needed to add a bit of randomness to the result because take lipemr's example, how many people take that long in-game between shots, and what do you think the result would be rushing shots out faster? Even then his grouping isn't that remarkable and he's probably somewhat familiar with that gun. Now try that again after jogging around the block for 20 minutes in a potentially hostile environment where you know someone could be hunting you. Guaranteed you'd be harder-pressed/lucky to hit a head-sized target at 40m. Guns aren't about "the first bullet goes where it's pointed", between the time you start pulling a trigger and the bullet leaves the barrel there are all kinds of forces/counter-forces in-play that determine exactly what path that bullet will take. Human beings are not robotic firing platforms, and though some people can train themselves to come close, it's a not reasonable assumption that a character in this game would have anywhere near that level of timing and skill. Even if they introduced dispersion after the first shot (reticle bloom) you don't want first-shots too accurate because often it just takes 1 shot to take someone down and the game devolves to a twitch-shooter where the penalty only applies if you miss your first shot. I prefer games with dispersion randomness added, even if it sometimes doesn't work in your favour it's probably the fairest thing to handicap mouse-snapping accuracy to something that more reasonably reflects real-world accuracy.

    Where am I?

Polana is a *long* hike from NWAF. If you're not 100% of your orientation (compass equipped) you may have headed south from the NWAF and ended up in Vybor. Often when heading South from NWAF to Vybor I get disorientated and end up at Lopatino. If there is a water tower you are in Stary. Stary is not a very big settlement, but as my fellow Canadian out in the middle of the Pacific mentions, check for a road sign. DayzDb's maps give both English and Cyrillic spellings.
