Okay so we got berry's (as i saw in the update notes) What about mushrooms? They should be able to be found in the forest. And what if you pick up the wrong ones and eat them, your characters vision starts flipping out. By the look of the shaders used when you are running really long on top speed. You could make a bigger depth of vision waves across the screen. Let the saturation go a little higher now and then. I mean all in all its survival and that could happen, in the jungles people eat the wrong fruits. in that part of the world the berries, mushrooms, apple's etc are the fruits of the forest.
