    What killed me?

Sounds like the whistle sound might have been a bullet passing by. I think you might have been shot. If thats the case, then the advice would be not to get caught in the open. Shooting obviously gives away you position. If it was a bug of some kind than the advice be would not to play until those kind of bugs are fixed.

I have people I play with on regular basis, I am not looking for a soulmate :P. I do understant the risks as well, and without them what fun would the game be? At least for now, and probably always, the only real threath is other people, and it should be that way. To me though, some of the fun is risking something in interaction with other players, other than having your bullets miss, but it just can't happen if there is no reward ever. Maybe I have just been unlucky, and with unlucky, and by that I don't mean getting killed, unlucky to not get a respons at all, other than having people run away or shoot. I try to have the upper hand obviously before approaching, and I have never been approached myself other than with bullets. Well I am not looking for a licking, and I tested my ingame voice with my friends, and they can hear me from a reasonable distans :). I do stick to high to medium populated servers.

    Voice communication

So I am now about 50 hours into the game, and I have yet to find one single person that will actually respond to you in any other fashion then shooting or running away, it's pretty sad. The only time I have ever heard anyone say anything on voice it was "friendly" and that was it (he didn't carry a gun obviously). So what does it take to actually be able to interact with people in other ways than shooting at them in DayZ standalone. I aways read "when more features are added in" on here but I am not so sure. I guess maybe it holds some truth as there is not a whole not of reasons to do any trading, since there just isn't enough gear to trade for or with. It's just a bit boring to gear up and then hunt people down, and thats it.
