BIG NEWS ! submachine-gun, tents, teddy bears, and much more
Buffaloe replied to rotteck's topic in General Discussion
I'm kind of fine with that, as long as guns and attachements are reasonably rare, and don't shoot lasers. I could not care much less whether some supressor thingy is feasible or not with a certain kind of gun barrel. -
Let's cool it down a little shall we? I am going to ignore your personal attacks and keep it to the point. I was doing quite the opposite of generalizing the term "normal". Instead I was trying to point out how it is connected to the social and historical context. I think using concepts like feudalism and slavery, that are nowadays discredited in "western" societys but were the norm in the past, to emphasize this is perfectly fine. Anyway the issue of this discussion is neither slavery nor the opression of women in Iran or the issue of human rights in general, but instead sexism in video games and the respective community. To clear some things up, I am not referring to OP's point in particular but the gaming community in general so I think i can safely assume there is an issue with sexism. This thread is not the right place to list extensive amounts of publications, so I suggest you research for yourself, I am however willing to assist you via pm in doing so.

Well, first of all, you should express yourself more clearly if you do not want to get missunderstood. However I still think I got the core of your previous statement just well. Your reply strikes me as one of the "I am not against X, but..." lip services. Sexism is not simply the "hurt feelings of insecure individuals". It is discrimination by gender, which can be observed by everyone in everyday life as well as in the gaming community in the form of gender stereotypes. It can however also be quantified as done in several scientific works on the subject, for example concerning income equality or again the gaming community. Of course sexism does not exist in a vacuum. It is deeply rooted in the consciousness and subconsciousness of the people, as well as the material conditions of society. Since it is so deeply rooted it might strike the uncritical mind as "normal" but may I remember you that slavery and feudalism were also deeply rooted in past societies and widely perceived as normal. As you can see, just because something is "normal" in the historical context it is not necessarily good, or an inevitable evil. It's quite cheap to make assumptions about my private life and turn them into accusations. As a matter of fact I am politically active in several organizations. No, a single forum topic will surely not change the world, however It does contribute to making people aware of the issue. And judging from many replies there is still an enormous need for that. Ultimately, those who are affected most by sexism, i.e. women, are those who have to fight it the fiercest. Taking part or supporting the struggle is not "protecting someone weaker" to make yourself feel comfortable, it is solidary uniting yourself with other, equal human beeings to struggle for a goal you deem worthwhile.

While I am not quite sure whether i can make sense of that gibberish, it reeks of the "it has always been this way and will never change no point to argue" phrase. Which is of course completely invalid. After all just because a negative condition was present in the past and is widely present in present time, this condition is still a problem and therefore in need of change. If your "argument" was applied broadly there would be no social progress at all. I think you just outed yourself as a major reactionary.

Sarkeesian makes some very valid points, based on her own research as well as the scientific works of others. However her work is mostly concerned with the representation of women in video games in form of character designs and the roles those characters play. This discussion on the other hand is about how the community treats it's female members. To get back to point though, if you mistake the point Sarkeesian is making for an imagined one, then I suppose you are making the same mistake here.

Of course sexism is not just a problem of the dayz community. It's a problem concerning the whole society, the gaming community included. This however does not make it less of an issue, as I see it this makes the problem even more pressing. Also I do not think women beeing a minority in this community, as well as this beeing a post apocalyptic game somehow justify or alleviate sexism. By simply proclaming that sexism in video games is normal and can not be dealt with you actually create an atmosphere where sexism can thrive instead of slowly receding and then dying in a corner. In our role as members of the gaming community we can however contribute to ending sexism by pointing out the problems and making people conscious of the issue. However, by accepting things as normal or given while also downplaying the issue we achive the opposite.

What makes you think we are talking about 10 people? I don't quite understand who you mean with those people, offenders or victims? Anyway, the number is completely arbitrary and therefore meaningless. And while insults and immature behaviour are unfortunately common in the community sexist or racial slurs have a quality of their own. Why? Because they are not simple but rather unsubstantial insults like your common slurs. Instead they reenforce and perpetuate stereotypes as well as negative conditions in our society.
-
Someone beeing killed and insulted on dayz is indeed usual, but not the subject of this discussion. ( altough I don't think we should accept toxic behaviour as inevitable) This discussion is about how female gamers are treated by the rest of the community. I do think having an open community that welcomes people regardles of their gender is very important. Judging from videos, posts (some of them in this very thread) and my own, as well as others' experience I think there definitively is a problem with sexism in the community. When this starts to harm the playing experience of the ever growing group of female gamers to the point some don't feel welcome in the community I do think it becomes an issue.
-
Well, I guess for one there is a group of players that are generally toxic and will insult you no matter what. You have a female voice? -> something sexist your char is black? -> racial slurs they killed you/ you killed them -> "you suck, faggot....." But I suppose there is a second group of brodudes and immature players that, while oftenly belonging to the first group anyway seem to have a special problem with women sharing their hobby. I always underestimated those tendencies in the community, until I started to get interested in feminism and some feminist websites dealing with (the representation of) women in popular media like movies or games. The backlash that sometimes followed up on some very basic and reasonable arguments and demands was quite extreme and oftenly very toxic. Which was surprising in a very negative way, but also acted as somewhat of an eye opener to issues i did not perceive that much before. I think considerable parts of the gaming community are reactionary, sexist or simply toxic. We can hope, and work for that to change, but for the moment one unfortunately has to develop a thick fur and show the tough guys who's boss.

Question regarding server admins and kicking players
Buffaloe replied to RagedDrew's topic in General Discussion
It is kind of a shame that noone from official side cares. Sure, it does not directly hurt the game experience, but it needlesly clutters the server list and undermines the whole loot system. It might even get worse once there are persistent items, since the farmed items can also be horded then. Also if there were less groups of armed to the teeth wannabe rambos flooding the servers the game experience might improve. -
Question regarding server admins and kicking players
Buffaloe replied to RagedDrew's topic in General Discussion
Nope, they aren't. The servers have to be open to the public. However some people seem to rent servers just to "farm up" there. Those are the "join=kick" or "no join" servers. I personally don't get why anyone would go through that hassle when one might just go play a regular fps... -
Yep, it's dead. There is no point visiting the forum and opening threads anymore.
-
I still don't get why watching a game character engaged in a pooping animation is a problem, while chopping someone's arm of with an axe is fine. I personally always considered poop less shocking than grievous bodily harm...
-
As long as there is life on earth there also will be poop!

I think 100 player servers are desperately needed. Yes, you will meet other players on 30 or 40 player servers, but mostly in hot spots. As soon as you go further inland the game becomes very very boring. However, high player counts combined with spread out spawns and respawning loot based on area population might lead to a very healthy spread of players over the map in the future. Right now not sticking to the hotspots leads to a very boring but long life of your character. On the other hand it feels weird to force oneself into the populated areas and join the slaughering to get "more interesting" gameplay. To be fair, right now there exist a few spots which make up for interesting encounters without becoming deathmatch areas. However it would be way more fun if we had more of those, wouldn't it?

What would be a realistic level of stamina/run time?
Buffaloe replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
I would not mind a slower running speed. But maybe that should wait untill there are basic vehicles in the game to serve as an alternative to walking. Also we need a toggleable "run" key, keeping w pressed can become quite a chore after some time. -

Buffaloe replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
I think you should be able to outrun zombies (i.e. you are faster than them), but not forever. Meaning, if you sprinted a long distance, and get caught by a zombie while you have zero stamina you shouldn't have enough energy left to run away from it. In this case you are forced to fight the zombie(s) with all disadvantages beeing exhausted may bring. For example lower melee damage/attack rate and increased weapon sway. This would, together with a more refined zombie vision system, encourage planning ahead and trying to avoid zombies as much as possible. edit: I hope you are refering to normal running. I don't think we should be able to sprint for a few kilometers. -
Isn't this the way it should be? People trying to scratch together all ammo they can find.

Dead serious. You could simply look up the cyrillic alphabet if you don't know the letters.

Novi Sobor. Try to read...It is right in front of you

In my experience exp. is friendlier than the stable build. I had some good shootouts so far, but also some nice friendly encounters. Btw. what do I need to skin/gut an animal? A knife or machete? The axe did not to it for me :/
-
Could someone enlighten me whether respawning loot is included in the current exp. build?
-
The new exp. patch's content is pure awesome. The rubberbanding makes it a lot less enjoyable though :/

"We don't want your sniper rifle!"

Maybe you actually aimed towards a spot next to the guy's head and the dispersion guided to bullet for you :P -
In a society where race was justification for extreme cruelty, up until the last century we should be aware of the issue of racism. It's not simply about someone beeing a little offended. It's about fighting racist culture.
