I think they only really hear gunshots. Other than that it's sight, the thing with that though is that every zombie in a town tends to be facing the same way, this is because they were aggroed, chased a player and then stopped and haven't moved since. So if you come in on the right side of town you can sneak by all of them, come in on the wrong side and they will ALL chase you.

People shooting automatic Mosins on public Servers
Sebidee replied to Colemanw26's topic in General Discussion
Are you positive that it was only one guy? If a crew of five were firing Mosins out of synch then it would seem to be one guy with an automatic. -
Am i better off just 2 shotting someone with fists or chance it with the fireaxe/bat?
Sebidee replied to wmike20052's topic in General Discussion
Is it just me or do you get a thrill out of killing zombies with your bare hands? I did that on my very first spawn, I hadn't had my settings optimized and I hadn't configured my switchable graphics card so everything was really laggy but I got into a fist fight with two zombies. Killed them both and then died about 5 seconds later from blood loss. Incredible moment. -
Before I go into my question I'll tell you a story of the last time I died in Day Z. Me and my buddy were looting in Cherno, we entered the fire station and both went to different sides of it to search for stuff. I guess both of us dropped the ball because we weren't watching the door and another player snuck in behind us. The player didn't see my friend and walked up right behind me to shoot me at point blank range. I turned around and we looked at each other for a split second. We raised our guns at the same time and began firing but a second later I was dead. Luckily my friend managed to kill the guy and survived himself. Now, what is strange about this is that both of us definitely, definitely fired at the same time. I swear to god, I swear on my life, I swear on anything I have or will ever own that I got off at least 3 SKS shots right into the guy's chest. I saw the gun flash and jump and I heard it too, he had an M4 and I know they sound different. The thing was that my friend saw the whole thing and he said I didn't shoot. He also said that my killer was completely unhurt and came incredibly close to killing him. The only conclusion I can come to is that the internet just screwed up. Now, I understand that the internet will do that but this lag was severe. Also Day Z is the kind of game where those split seconds really matter and I don't want to be a second behind all the time. So, is this an alpha issue that is obviously going to be fixed or is it something that I am just going to have to get used to?

I think everyone can agree that there is a certain cycle in Day z. You spend a few hours gearing up, get the best possible items and then get hit by an unstoppable wall of boredom. The only thing you can really do then is engage in banditry or if you are the heroic type then start some anti-banditry. Essentially you set out to start a fight, and since your opponents are more or less equal to you this will mean your death, fast. Even if you survive your first few fire fights you will just end up taking bigger risks, against larger groups of players. Essentially you are committing suicide because there is nothing better to do. Strangely though dying does not annoy me too much. In fact I feel relieved to go from fully geared to a fresh spawn, it lets me replay the most enjoyable part of the game, sneaking through villages and being properly afraid of zombies. The problem is that there is no incentive to stay alive. Sure, you could spend a few more hours getting slightly better equipment. Ditching your worn summer hunter trousers for a pristine pair or maybe getting a magnum instead of a pistol. But the practical difference between these items are so small that it feels like a waste of time. Better to just throw your life away in a briefly exciting fire fight and start as a fresh spawn again. So, what can be done? well, here are my suggestions. 1. Add some extra curricular activities. I really have no business claiming this as an idea of mine as the devs have said they would add them. Still, I think extra things such as hunting and building and what ever else you care to suggest would really give me something else to do than just looting. 2. Make surviving more difficult. When you have the weapons to effectively kill zombies then surviving becomes really, really easy. You can eat like a king by looting the smallest villages and you can pretty much be permanently hydrated by drinking from wells. So the solution? you need to make your health more of an issue. You should get sick by not having a varied diet and you should get sick from being exposed to the elements. You should especially get sick from being around zombies or in towns that should be riddled with the dead. You also should randomly get common illnesses just to keep you on your toes. And even though I love them, they really should limit the amount of wells. Making me more dependent on constantly needing to find new supplies would help to prolong the looting stage so that I can still 'gear' even when geared. 3. Add some kind of 'staying alive bonus' Alright, I think this may be the divisive suggestion. I think that you should get certain skills, perks and bonuses based on the amount of time you are in game. These could be things like allowing you to run faster, reload quicker, move more quietly or use melee weapons better. This would certainly make me want to survive as my time alive as one character would noticeably make my gameplay more fun. I know that this is not all that realistic but there are certain factors that the game cannot simulate, such as the character's lifelong goals or his fear of death. Maybe he wants to eventually find his family or save civilisation. We don't want to do this because we know we're playing a game. So, what do you think? Also if you have any other suggestions as to how to break the gear then suicide cycle then please post them. I will add them to the OP and then credit you.

I supposed I'm just a boring old survivor. I'm not a bandit and I don't KOS, I prefer to avoid people most of the time. When I am geared up I usually go and try to find, identify and kill bandits, but that doesn't make me a hero as I often like to mess with freshies just for the hell of it. In short, I'm a perfect neutral.

I know Hero, Bandit and Survivor which is a mix of the two but what exactly is a medic? You just go around randomly bandaging people? Isn't that hero?
-
The problem with that is that he will already be inside and have me in his sights before he even appears on my screen. I am going to die. A LOT. Care to elaborate on what that cause is? Seems like a shame to just leave it hanging there.

Well one thing we can all agree on is that we love Morgan Freeman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsN2wRfM5E4&list=UUy5OkG7_WR07nbgkDLDXZYQ

Why do you hate someone so much if you don't know them?
-
I would have killed them, You saw them kill a freshie so there is no way they would let you live if they found you. You were only outnumbered 2 to 1 and if you managed to get the jump on them and even the odds on your first volley then you would have won the fight.

I know, I am one. Edit: Great post Laughing Jack. I only got the game recently enough so I haven't been keeping up with the dev stuff. It's great to know that all of that stuff I asked for was already coming.

So, because I'm playing this game I decided to learn the Russian alphabet. It might seem like an incredible length to go just to be able to read road signs but hey, I guess I'll know it for the rest of my life. Currently I'm finding it quite hard to figure out where I am. When I find a village I look at the name and then try to compare the small Russian letters on the online map, ignoring the large English letters that are on it. If anyone else wants to do the same I found this good video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhrSpf8kaqQ

I expect they will update the zombies so that they have the same damage system as players. I would really like to see it though, right now it appears that they have some kind of health bar.
-
It could kill a person at long range but what about zombies? It would have very small stopping power.
-
Oh thanks. this is good.

How do you guys feel aboutr this as a sniping spot (Elektro)?
Sebidee replied to thequantum's topic in General Discussion
Why are you sniping in the first place? Are you just indiscriminately killing people? -
My friend broke his leg and told me to get him a stick. Like a fool I ran into the woods. Surely you find sticks in the woods right? Turns out no. You should really be able to cut them off trees.
-
That would allow fresh spawns to combat log from zombies.

Ok so I guess there is just a complete embargo on posting anything ever on the forum from this point on. we'll just search and read and not be able to interact in any way. Sounds fun! Is there anything that hasn't been discussed?
-
Celt! yeah I understand that it's in alpha and we can't really complain. I'm not complaining though, I actually really love this game. Though that doesn't mean I don't want to imagine the ways that they will improve it.
-
C'mon guys. It seems like every thread on this forum starts with people either posting a search bar or saying alpha. Forums are all about discussion and I want to be part of that rather than reading threads that are weeks old. If you want to weigh in then weigh in. If your sick of it then don't and maybe go do something else.

They aren't!

Ignoring the search bar fans I will actually give my opinion on this. I think adding a longer timer for everyone would be disastrous and the reason for that is zombies. The vast vast majority of people will log of in the wilderness or in a town, rather than on the roof of an apartment building. It's very hard to know if you have aggroed zombies, especially if those zombies are a half mile away and following you. If everyone had a 2 minute logout then that would be ample time for zombies to find you and then kill you. At least with the 30 seconds timer there is at least the chance that zombies will not have enough time to get enough hits. The whole bullet detection thing though is interesting, and I think that could help the problem.

Oh come on please. Sure they would lose muscle but they aren't going to lose their entire leg. It would slow them down but it wouldn't stop them, not if they are mindless killing machines. And no, you would not bleed out in seconds if a bullet missed a major artery. Get shot in the stomach, or your limbs (except for the femoral artery) and you will not bleed out for quite some time. This isn't a hollywood movie with blood squibs, you know that bucko? Yes, getting shot in the lungs would kill you pretty quick but not quick enough if that zombie is coming right at you. What I'm talking about is the instant that the thing is attacking, you think that shooting it in the lung, even if the lung collapses is going to stop it dead when it's dinner is within arms reach? No. If it doesn't feel pain it won't care that it will be dead in a few minutes because YOU will be dead first.
