Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
daisho replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
No one is anti-bandit or is saying KoS is wrong. There is more than just black and white and that's what people can't seem to recognize. Whenever someone mentions "KoS" the self-claimed elitists jump on you, calling you "crybaby" and telling you to go play "carebear online" like you would want to take something away from them or would want to change the whole game. Of course there is people who farmed up properly and just wanna KoS, totally legit. Of course there is areas and situations KoS is the best thing you can do, no matter what, totally legit. There is nothing wrong with KoS itself and no one wants to take this feature/ playing style out of the game, but it is wrong that people don't have to do anything to gear up. Just go to a military base, farm-hop empty/ private servers, have pimped up gun and backpack full of ammo and go on a rampage hunting down fresh spawn or pretty undergeared people. And that's something they need to fix. Yes, I know this game has guns and people want to use them, I totally understand that, but DayZ is/ could be so much more than just running around as a one-man-army killing everything on sight. Also: with the situation of no actual threat as Zeds are pretty rare and have a somewhat messed up AI at there is nothing that encourages to actually shoot anything else than other players. /edit: typos -
your first interaction with another player
daisho replied to tyleranator's topic in General Discussion
First mission: I've been eaten by a Zed after I spawned on a nighttimeserver, didn't know where to go and had no clue how to turn on my flashlight and/ or how to use it properly) Second mission: I decided to go on a daytime server, spawned, still had no clue where to go so I ran down the street until I reached some city, I was checking some houses but didn't find any loot really, leaving one house I see a group of 4 armed people in full military gear heading towards me, I at first like was "cool, other players"..until they started shouting at me, giving me orders to lie down on the floor, I then got handcuffed and they started mocking me for maybe 2-3 minutes, laughing, calling me names, generally acting tough, then started shooting me to various bodyparts and I started bleeding...last thing I see is one of them steping next to my head and giving me a headshot. -
the problem is that - at least for me - the server history is kinda bugged and does not show the correct order of the servers you've played on recently and without that it's a bit annoying to find again the server you've just joined and got kicked from. Also: Is is possible to report servers just for having a server name like that? I've recognized a lot of "testing" servers too that say they would delete your character upon joining, I guess that's just to keep people from joining too?
-
*bump* really no one see's any use for this (or any other way to rate/ report servers)?
-
Yes, and it comes with the disadvantage of running slower while running around with a drawn gun and having to pick up stuff everytime you put something else other than that weapon in your hands. I mean you can carry a primary weapon, a pistol and an axe, ain't that more than enough already? I personally don't see any point in lonewolfing and running around as one-man-army...
-
Let's please get away from an approach that makes everyone run around as a one-man-army, rather team up with fellow survivors and form a squad whith different people specializing in different weapons/ jobs. A main aspect of the game should be about making decicions imho, if you chose to carry a mosin for long ranged fights you should not be able to carry as well a m4 and a shotgun. Also: it would benefit server hoppers even more as they could/ would not only farm one weapon/ ammotype but a whole arsenal.

using spraycans to leave messages on houses/ mark trees and for self defense
daisho posted a topic in Suggestions
I once tried to spray a message on a house as I first thought spraycans would be meant for that, but it didn't work (either because it's not possible or I was too dumb to do it)... I was thinking that this would be a great way to: 1) give general warning to other players (i.e. leave messages like: sniper/ bandits/ horde of zeds in the area - watch out, or indicate that a certain area is crowded with deers so most likely a good hunting ground) 2) use a certain code within clans (i.e. certain sign/ code indicates 300 meters northwest is a stash for ammo/ meds/ food) 3) mark locations for yourself (i.e. stash some stuff in the middle of the woods and be able to find it again, while you are heading back to a city with an empty backpack to look for other items) 4) leave some warning on city signs/ houses in the outskirt and tell people to stay away or face the danger of getting shot right away when you enter as some clan/ squad is claiming this very city their personal looting area at this moment 5) or just mark an area as protected by heroes as an neutral/ safe city, where people can come to trade stuff, have a chitchat, form raiding crews, team up (in this case there would be no need for permanent tradingposts that could get camped by bandits as they just pop up temporarily on some point on the map for a certain timeframe) Also: as spraycan's can sometimes be found more often than i.e. the fireaxe it would make a great way for people to self-defend (spray someone's head, this person will not die but will be completely/ partially blinded for some time if not wearing a helmet/ mask, if wearing a helmet he will be blind too but can get fixed by taking off the helmet/ mask, stuff then have to get cleaned out with water (desinfect/ alcohol). -
The problem is to find a good way to discuss things so the game turns out to be fun to play for the self-claimed elitists and the casuals alike as both playing styles have their legit place in the game and especially this game has the chance to make it fitting for everyone. Calling whoever is just trying to talk about KoS'ing or not sharing your opinion a crybaby just makes it impossible to discuss stuff in a way, that both sides could be satisfied with the result. DayZ is despite the current lack of content a great game and could have a bright future for both elitists and casuals. I've posted this in another thread already: I'm playing FPS since the early days of Counter Strike and as much as I can enjoy a round of CoD and Battlefield I really don't like the instant-spawn-rambo-run-and-gun gameplay anymore with all these perks that make stuff even faster.... I totally love this game as it's so much different from the common shooters on the market and especially elitists need to adapt the slow paced gameplay that is about so much more than just killstreaks and a high kdr and I don't want DayZ to turn into anything like that. As much as KoS has it's legit place in the game, this game has to offer SO much more and bringing more weapons, choppers and stuff like that into the game would just be the wrong approach imho. Call me a "crybaby" for all I care but if you wanna run and gun and show off a high kdr, there's better games to play for you.

Aspects that accumulatively wear on your patience in dayz
daisho replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
I don't like waiting for stuff to re-appear after dropping it either but I find this neither irritating nor annoying. It just the way it is, it most likely will change after alpha. As for the other stuff, animations, running etc: I actually like the slow pace of the journey, things are getting hectic enough when fights are happening. Maybe people are used too much to the fast paced FPS like CoD and BF, these are good games. I some time ago hopped on BF2 and BF2142 again too see if people are still playing and was somewhat surprised how much more slow paced they were even though not slow games at all. I'm playing FPS since the early days of Counter Strike and as much as I can enjoy a round of CoD and Battlefield I really don't like the instant-spawn-rambo-run-and-gun gameplay anymore with all these perks that make stuff even faster.... The question is: what to change and what to keep? Once you start making stuff easier/ faster people will demand more and more stuff to get automated, to run faster, to have this and to be able to do that. This slow pace and tension is what makes DayZ special for me and it is what makes me really enjoy the game. .. /edit: typos -
server-hopping: ...your Idea seems interesting, but I'm not sure if that is the right approach. Disconnects can happen for so many different reasons beside serverhopping and as much as they need to find a solution for this they shouldn't punish "innocent" players. I for example dc whenever I get a phonecall, doorbell,... maybe your ISP goes down or a badmin kicks you or you wanna play together with some friends and get teleported to some point on the map and don't even know where you are as you got like no orientation whatsoever. Even though things will change after alpha - most times wouldn't even be able to find the server again I was playing on just recently. combat-logging: as said in another thread already: I totally would hate to be forced to actually stay ingame or leave my charakter vulnerable ingame if I want to log off or I simply need to log off because I have anything to do in RL be it that I have to get food, I'm getting an important phonecall or have friends coming over. AION back then had some pretty decent system: you couldn't log out when under attack for X seconds and after that you had to wait (iirc) 15 seconds to log out, but you basically were still in game and could cancel the timer counting down anytime. I would be fine with something like that. Like: * people cant log out at all for -let's say- 1 or 2 minutes after they got hit. * when logging out you stay ingame and watch the timer count down and you can cancel it when you see people around you anytime. (no more being on server when not logged in) This would make people not combatlog right away but if they wanna logout their character is not completely vulnerable Again: pls no penality that lasts longer than a 1 or 2 minutes, this is a game after all and shouldn't affect RL in any way.

using spraycans to leave messages on houses/ mark trees and for self defense
daisho replied to daisho's topic in Suggestions
Well to reduce the risk of running into dicks all the time there could be some premade signs, even CS 1.6 had it, shouldn't be hard to get implemented (I guess). Maybe have a huge variety to chose from in the character menu before you join a server, where you can pick like 3 or 5 for your character to use ingame, so people can't/ have to free draw but still would have a the chance to develop and use a unique code for their group/ clan. -
Either you try and loot towns what takes time or you simple farm-hopp servers in any military building and get geared up fast...and that is the source of the problem....or all those admins, that run private server for the (apparently) sole purpose to gear up and then are bored as they don't know what else to do than shooting people. I've tried it once for science, I was on late night in my timezone and was looking for empty/ very low pop servers, ran to a military base and started server hopping. I was geared/ equiped in like no time (except the little wating time you get for changing servers too often) and had a bag full of ammo that would last for days. Despite the fact I got insta glitch-killed by falling through the floor while eating tuna (I guess i deserved it) with all that precious gear some time after I decided to not go server hopping again as this takes away all the fun of the game and renders the whole survival concept and thrill or running into the unknown utterly useless. I'm not even mad, some people wanna play like that, fine by me, totally legit, but people should not have the option to farm-hopp and gear up in no time if they wanna play like that: you wann KoS? Earn it, don't go easy mode. I'm not claiming all KoS'ers are abusing the server hopping thingy and of course there is critical areas I (most likely) would KoS myself in order to protect myself or "my" loot, but there should be common sense that going rampage on easy targets like fresh spawns just to chicken out and combat-log when shit hits the fan and you face an actual threat is not a cool thing to do. Things hopefully will change once more content will be implemented. I got my hopes up.

I get ya, I was expressing my thoughts a bit wrong....that shouldn't be hard to get implemented. What I was thinking was that: smells shouldn't be recognized in a radius around X meters around the source by default, especially not coming with any textmessage giving directions, that would be too easy imho to i.e. find someone having put up his tent and having some deer BBQ. I was thinking there should be some kind of weather/ wind thingy then, so people should be aware of where they pitch their tent and get the BBQ started or if it would be a good idea to do so in the first place because - if wind blows in a certain direction - the smell or the smoke going to a certain direction could attract zeds or other players, might be they bring some booze but most likely they bring an axe or hunger for brains rather than deer, so better avoid attracting them. Maybe that's just too fussy though.
-
After running around for days/ weeks with the same cloths slaughtering zombies the only thing you'd smell would be something aweful most likely. Other than that, neat idea actually in regards to having some triggers that (may) indicate different things, but imho hard to implement as smells if implemented should be depending on wind directions, wind speed and weather in general. I'd rather have some stuff like animals though, that for example run/ fly in some direction as they heard something and/ or fleeing from someone or maybe crow swarms gathering near zed-hordes and stuff like that.

If I understand you correctly you want the system autoassign players to servers upon login and they would be bound to this server and cant play on other servers for a certain time? Problems I see: 1 ) you get autoassigned to a server with a badmin that immeditately kicks you, hence you can't play at all for that given time as you are bound to a server the admin doesn't let you play on 2 ) you get autoassigned to a server that doesnt fit your connection (high ping) 3 ) you get autoassigned to a server while the friends you wanna play/ team up with play on/ get assigned to another server. 4) on of the big advantages of PC gaming over console gaming is the rgulars/ communities that form around servers, this would not be possible anymore as there were no more regulars as people cant chose their servers anymore 5 ) you get autoassigned to a server, that is empty and want to play on full server or other way round 6 ) server-admins would get autoassigned to a random server too? 7) hackers on the server and you are forced to play on this server? To OP: I'm totally against it. As much as I hate combat-logging and farm-hopping I personally wouldn't want to feel forced to stay ingame or leave my character vulnerable ingame if any stuff is happening in RL, be it important or not, or I simply want to log out.

I somewhat agree with you, players should'nt complain here when they get killed as this ain't carebear online....on the other hand: things look different though if you don't even have a weapon, no backpack and just try to get from the coast to the inland and get ganked by a group of 4 in full mil gear, playing with you like a cat is playing with mice, trying to act tough and call you names... there is nothing you can do except hoping they kill you fast so you can respawn on a (hopefully) better location and actually play the game...and this happened more than once to me in the approx 40hrs I play this game. I most times tab out when this kind of shit happens, checking back every now and then to see if they are done yet. I'm pretty sure things will look different once more content will be implemented and I truely hope they will fix the server hopping problem as that might be the main source of the problem. Once people can't go easy mode anymore to get weapons/ gear/ ammo, things might look a bit different. -
Semi-off topic, but I was wondering if there is some kind of scope/ lense glare in this game as this would be a good way for people to check if there are snipers around, same could go for binoculars if they ever get implemented. Scopes and binoculars would be/ are a good way certain location but on the other hand it might give away your location.

some kind of indication for people who kill for no apparent reason
daisho posted a topic in Suggestions
Background: First off: This ain't some kind of rage thread of any kind. I'm pretty new to the game and it -despite the lack of current content- totally sucked me in already, I love the whole concept and as well as the "hardcore" setting what pushes the set of realism possible in a videogame to the max. I just love it. That being said: there need to be some solution to the whole KoS'ing though. As already mentioned I'm pretty new to the game but so far ended up dead on every occasion I've come across another player or a group of other players. Either they kill me on sight or I get sniped w/o even seeing anyone...or they tell me they're friendly just to backstabb me the moment I turn around. I get the whole survival thing what includes robbing and killing people, but there should be consequences for your actions. I wouldn't mind to get robbed if I come across some bandits, but what's the point killing the person you robbed afterwards? There should be consequences if you decide to do so. In a real world scenario people would for sure try to get guns fast but on the other hand most people would try and meet other people to team up as everyone would have come from different jobs and would have different abilities which would benefit the group. If someone of that group would go rampage he/ she would get banned and left alone what most likely would leave to that persons death. At the moment it's like (from what I can tell) people going rampage have a lot of benefits and hardly disadvantages as there is no consequences at all. I've tried to be a friendly soul and when I noticed that the game doesn't work for me like that I then tried to play as a loner in the woods and tried to stay out of trouble, what just got somewhat boring at some point as well as didn't turn out that well as I just got killed whenever I came across actual players. The only person I came across that haven't killed me was a dude who just started playing and needed help because he didn't know how to stop his bleeding. I helped him fix his wounds and we ran around a bit together, having a chit chat what actually was much more fun than running alone...until we came across some bandits who -guess what- shot us on sight (we both were pretty much bambis and just running around with basic clothing and no weapons) I now reached a point and I'm like "fuck it, I'll just KoS too whenever I see another player, no matter what their intentions might be" but a ) I don't want to act like that b ) if everyone runs around like that you don't actually need to play a game like DayZ as the mission then would be "kill everything on sight" just like in any other game no matter if multiplayer or single player. As said, I get the concept and if I would find myself in a situation that I need food or anything else and the only way to solve the problem is to rob another player, I'd do so myself but if not really needed, I wouldn't kill that said person. Speaking of a real world scenario: If you'd happen to find yourself in a situation like the given setting and would come across another human being you could most likely tell if that person is to be trusted or not, of course you always could be wrong but the chances are high that you could judge the situation from their behaviour, facial expression, gestics, age, general way of speaking/ acting/ behaving (and much more, you get the concept). ...Same goes for observing a city and the people in it, you most likely could judge from the behaviour they have and how they interact with each other if they're a bunch of bandits or just survivours who try to get along and you might team up with a bit...but: we don't have these options in DayZ and this would be hard to get implemented. I guess there's quite some people playing this game who KoS just for the reason to not get KoS'ed themselves and in my honest opionion this game has SO MUCH more to offer than just shooting everyone on sight, even if this has it's legit place in the game, people should be able to do it and it would be boring without this kind of action, but as said: there should be concequences and there should be any options for people to actually being able to judge a certain situation/ player better. updated suggestion: I now realize that some indicator on the head definitely is the wrong approach, but the idea ´(posted by Alcon) of someone literally having blood on his hands (cloths) after some hostile encounter with another human being (not zombies, given the fact they are dead run around with massive rotten wounds already and most likely wouldn't have any blood left in their body) would be a good start. Make this blood drenched clothing permanent, but add something like soap and washing boards (also could get used for cleaning bandages if you don't have desinfect spray before applying them so you don't get infections) so people can clean up their stuff if they don't have the chance to change their clothing... It would people take X slots in their inventory + would have little (!) impact on the equipments quality status and to clean it up they either would have to go to some pond or use their water for it (concequences). Further, if you find someone who got clothing drenched with blood and/ or is actually carrying around soap and washing board or is cleaning up his clothing in a pond you still can't be sure but odds are high he is a bandit looking for some trouble....or a hero helping someone out or just a "neutral" who had to defend himself. /edit: typos /edit: suggestion updated -

some kind of indication for people who kill for no apparent reason
daisho replied to daisho's topic in Suggestions
I totally get your point @ Lady Kyrah, but -imho- most people would stick together though, of course there would be tensions but society -even in a much smaller scale - like in the DayZ setting would band together as this - as said - would be the only way to survive. I might have some hunting skills but no medicine skills at all, I might not like you and you might not like me, but we would team up...even if for only a short time. Or maybe I would trade you some food after you have healed me and we would talk about what areas we've passed just recently and if there would be any goods/ threats. I personally think that most humans - even with having their own survival set as priority - would not harm any other human being for no obvious reason. Maybe they would be armed and would tell you to bugger off, but they would not kill if someone else is not a direct threat to theimselves or their group as ammo would be rare and shooting someone who ain't a threat would be waste of ammo that you might need in any other situation (and then might die because you don't have any left). I wonder how the whole KoS'ing would turn out if people would not be able to hop servers camping in certain critical areas and could farm up in like no time. Of course, people would still kill whenever they get the chance, but they would think twice about it. I'd maybe try and robb someone or shoot him to death too if he wouldn't give me what I want/ need but there at least would be a ) some interaction b ) a re-thinking of the given opportunities and calculating the situation rather than just running around and shoot everyone no matter what. One problem at the moment amongst other things is that (some) people are fully geared as they were serverhopping and got nothing else to do now because the whole "survive and get decent gear" aspect - what imho is meant to be a critical part of the game - got rendered obsolete. -
What Solutions Do You Have To Filter Out The Toxic Exploiting Part of DayZ From The Rest of The Community?
daisho replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
The problem are people that go server-hopping-looting all the time to gear up, just to then only engage in fresh-spawns, undergeared and not-so experienced players and battlelog once shit hits the fan but at the same time go "KoS-ing is totally legit, let me play the way I want to, this is sandbox, stop crying because I killed you". I'm not crying, nor am I ranting and I'm far from saying that every player KoS'ing will act that way but the players that act like this are the ones that make everyone elses gaming experience misserable as there is totally no point for that kind of behaviour. I'm fairly new, I got like 40hrs of gaming time under my belt in the SA, didnt play the mod before.... and in these 40hrs I've met 2 people who not shot me right away the moment they saw me, no matter if I even had a weapon of any kind or just was a fresh spawn running around looking for food while they were either lonewolfing in full endgame gear/ weapons or even in full squads geared up to the max. Sometimes they just decided to handcuff me, call me names and mock me for a few minutes and shoot me a couple times to various body parts while I was handcuffed on the floor so I don't die instantly and they can keep calling me names and make fun of me. Again...yes, this is a legit playing style the problem to me imho is the percentage of encounters with other players you have that end up like this. Further, I wouldn't even mind this kind of encounter if I would be fully armed myself, it would happen in some critical area for military loot and/ or would have made a wrong step, but respawning, then getting raped by a group of 3-4 people in full military gear 15-20 minutes later mocking me like they just would have achieved something or shown some skill ain't cool. Maybe I was just unlucky with the people I've met on the servers I've played on so far and I'm still quite laidback, enjoying the game but it IS getting tiresome. /edit: typos -

True that, while dicks ain't hurting and it would people's own decsision if they wanna waste their spraycan on a dick rather than some message or camo'ing their gears, so be it. I see a problem with racist slurs and other kind of hatespeech. Good argument. I'm not sure what the percentage of people who'd do that would be though. -

Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
daisho replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
2 things: 1) The argument a lot of KoS'ing players bring up is: this is a sandbox game, everyone should play the game like he wants to play it. Totally legit opinion and I support that wholeheartedly, but on the other hand, with almost everyone running around KoS'Ing, I for example who actually wants to (at least) interact with people before shooting/ getting shot or doing something else, am more or less forced to play the KoS-game as well or stay away from any other human player atm in order to survive (more often/ better). And to play a gamestyle like that I as well could play CoD or some single player game. 2) If you go for the challenge, looking for the thrill and confront equally armed players I support that too wholeheartedly as it's a totally legit way to play the game as said multiple times already, I'm fairly new to the SA, never played the mod before, and in my like 40 hrs into the game, I got shot dead on sight everytime I met another player and soemtimes even got sniped while I most times didn't even have a weapon of any kind and was running around with civilian clothing and a small backpack looking for food. So these people don't seem to be willing to face a challenge or realism, neither plan to communicate with players in any way. I assume this is coming from lack of content and the most fun thing for people might be to get some kills under their belt before they lose their gear to another bug/ glitch again, so I still have my hopes up this kind of behaviour will change once more content is implemented. Maybe I was just unlucky with the people I've met so far on the servers I've played on but in 40 hours of gaming time I. EVERY. TIME. I met another player got killed right away, without any communication upfront...sometimes just 10-20 minutes into the game with no gear/ weapon whatsoever...and 90% of the times I got killed it was by endgame geared solo players or groups of 3-4 engame geared players who then proceeded with making me unconsious/ handcuffing and mocking me. In around 40 hrs of playing time I've come - so far - across 2 people who did not shoot me on sight. One was a fresh spawn and new player who asked for help to stop his bleeding and the other one was well a equipped player yesterday I met in Elektro who gave me a helmet and a pistol (as I was fresh spawn and had like nothing). Thank you kind stranger. -
Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
daisho replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
With the situation given (hopping on empty servers and gear up, having private servers and gear up) I guess some people go for easy mode at the start (hop servers, gear up) and then are bored due to lack of content and basically got nothing else to do thatn KoS'ing everyone. Others might be friendly souls but have died so damn often and got somewhat paranoid so they rather kill than get killed. The problem is that you can't really judge situations when meeting people. I'm a fairly new player and I personally plan to play friendly unless someone attacks me and I'm forced to defend myself. So far - and I'm not exaggerating here - every encounter with another played ended up with me being dead and I most times was a fairly fresh spawn without any military equip. Either they ganged me with a full group and mocked me when I was lying unconscious/dead on the floor, or I got sniped out of nowhere while walking around the area, or they are like "don't shoot I'm friendly just to slash an axe in my back the moment I turn around. I only one time met a guy who did not kill me, we both were fresh spawns, he was new player and was asking for help how to fix his bleeding, I explained him, we ve been travelling together for a bit, having chitchat and actually enjoying the game...until we ran into a group of endgame geared players which killed us on sight without any hesitation...yeah...I guess 2 dudes running around in jeans and t-shirt without any weapons looking for food are a massive threat to a full squad of engame geared people bearing arms. I get the whole survival thing but I wanna have the option to be able to trust people without having massive disadvantages from it. The sad part is, whenever you mention the KoS-problem people go /thread and say it would be realism... realism - imho - would be the complete opposite (people banding together and trying to keep up a certain level of civilazation) and would try to benefit from different abilities different people would add to the group. I'm far from saying they should remove KoS in any way, people should be able to play the game they want to play it, no matter what, but there should be options for the people who want to actually team up and play along friendly with other players and there should be concequences for people who don't. Because slaugthering unarmed and/ or undergeared people just to battlelog once you face an actual threat is neither challenging nor realism.
