Yeah, I hear that. And it's hard to argue against your logic on this. But (the word "but" is always a qualifier which really says "No" and contradicts an agreement :D )... But, couldn't something like manual reading--say, about sniping--act as an experience modifier? Right click lets you hold breath and repeated experience shooting with a scope might actually create a more confident sniper within time (and using a text-reading function as an implementation of that?). You're absolutely right about gauging distance and, I add, tweaking the scope to offset drift or damage so I'll just stick to my "wobble theory" for now. The same thing might be said about, say, tailoring. I can't make pants in RL so I would like to see skills of that sort develop in the game eventually. This stuff could really turn DayZ into a hyper-realistic environment. Not all gamers are coordinated regarding hand/eye skills and that might cause them to leave Chenarus in disgust (if they don't know what sort of game world they're entering). Perhaps they shouldn't be playing DayZ to begin with but real people have spent real money and this may level the playing field for them somewhat. Of course, such players could become clan cooks, enter a social niche, and leave it at that. I love DayZ. There are few games which offer such potential. PS I just read the poster above and want to qualify that any "skill upgrade" would be small and finite. You raise a good point.

I think it was a combination of things which happened. The random death on a server with pop 0/40 is frustrating and I can understand your puzzlement. That's never happened to me but I've died plenty since I started playing and assume that it was Glitch death, I got shot (it's true that few will ever hear the bullet which kills them), etc. A voodoo curse, I dunno. I've been on server with zero population and died so I assume it was a Ghost (someone just logged on) and I was unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I've been on servers with one other person... more than once... and I was in an isolated area and sure enough I run into the person. Both cases were friendly encounters. Even if I run on a server with one other online, I play as if I'm on a full server--it's a good habit to form early. Btw, you know about snap!, right? Not trying to insult you, just asking to be clear on this. That means the shots are at you... I like what Lady Kyrah posted about the You are dead screen giving us the nfo about why you died. Now, before you get angry ( :)), know that I've read every word on this thread. I don't think people are intending to Troll you. It seems like they're just trying to answer your question. PS ^ To the last. Except maybe OR3GONIZ3D. But that seems to be the way he is and he seems pretty open about it. Ya gotta admire his persistence. But he does make some valid points, here and there, from what I've read. LOL

Do you leave your morality at the door?

^ Well said. -
Good stuff. I'd like to just respond to what you say about books. I started playing just about two weeks ago today and a RL friend bought the game about five days ago. We've been talking about the same thing; it would be great to find tech manuals covering woodland survival and/or hunting guides, handling machinery (here, think about the posters talking about making your own ammo and operating lathes, mills, etc) or vehicles like helicopters, medical books, etc. If you don't find and read these texts you lack the skill. And I'm not saying DayZ should work like Fallout where you can absorb everything. Yes, keep the skill set reasonable. Maybe specialize in one or two skills. That sort of implementation in-game would give a player marketable skills--a clan needs a hunter/cook or a medic, let's say. And I'd like to see a barter system which goes along with that. If you're a solo survivor you can trade skill services for items. If you're in a clan your service comes with the certainty of remaining a vital member and you'd benefit from the security of being in a clan. Guy's a lousy fighter but a great medic or tailor (Need a ghillie suit? I can make one.), for example. There remains the issue of, say, soldier skills. Would reading a manual "upgrade" your sniping ability? Obviously, the person playing either is or isn't a good long-range shooter. But perhaps reading some manual would grant the player an in-game perk such as less wobble looking through a scope. I like it.

Maybe the buckshot was damp. Seriously now... The ping changes so I wouldn't go by the number that much beyond joining a server with an initially low ping. Like the poster above said, it probably was desync. I'm just guessing because I'm very new to the game. I read up online and watch YouTube uploads but my actual playtime is just about 2 weeks now.
-
That's funny. I actually had the same thought. Except Brad's not as articulate (even if the poster is angry, he does know how to put his thoughts into words), he's a nice guy who probably wouldn't call me names, and he hasn't asked us to mash that Like button. I never played the Mod but have watched plenty so I know about the "kill messages" in that version. I'd like to see that implemented in the SA though that might lead to a lot of revenge quests. The first time I played, I was stalked and summarily shot by a player who's name I know (I'd checked "P" just before I died) and saw him just as I "alted" around. I won't be looking for him 'cuz revenge just isn't how I want to run my toon(s). Actually, the guy did me a favor because it taught me a valuable lesson to play cautiously; I was a typical noob doofus just running from house to house on the coast. Now when I spawn I make a beeline for the construction site or the ship and then head north inland. So, short of opening a PayPal or Bitcoin account, how might a bounty system be workable in-game? Leave notes offering loot? Randomly or in a known location where folks can check? Through clan networks word of mouth? Which reminds me... Has anyone seen the Dolce & Battlefield 4 uploads where the guys find what seem to be Easter egg notes with a storyline? Those are pretty cool uploads--the guys edit the clips to seem like episodes of Walking Dead. Brilliant stuff. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBwkWclVU-8

^ True. Yes, it's about a nice guy playing a game and sharing it with people who can't buy the game. But the thread's about somebody who actually started an online account and is offering a reward to see the guy offed. I've been playing computer games since Zork and have never seen something like that done. I was amazed when I heard that during Brad's last upload last night. It's a real milestone, love it or hate it.
-
^ I love your EULA. You get beans for that.
-
Yes, I know, that's why I didn't feel like a bum for saying Brad kept tapping the "P" key. I knew when I posted this morning he'll have changed his name. But, really? My "blinded by my KOS thirst"? You don't know me well enough to say that. Actually, I haven't killed a single person yet in-game. I play friendly first, leave second, and shoot last. I'm about surviving not killing. Fixed. I'm a small "T" tarascon. My dad's the capital T. lol And, to repeat one more time, I did not post a bounty. The point of this thread is to hear what you folks think about someone else doing that. In a post above I admitted that one semantic gloss of this thread title could be interpreted as an injunction and I should have added a question mark to the title. -------> This is not addressed to you alone, omambuscus. And I bear no one ill will but I have to wonder... Have most of the responders on this thread actually read a word I posted after my OP?
-
Seriously I can see that in a way your idea is creative and tactical. It shows you're thinking about how to be original and run an interesting game for yourself. It's like the things I said about barter or bounties or the stuff that other people posted about making ammo, millwrights in Chenarus, etc. There are many ways in which we can make DayZ an imaginative game world. But your idea is just a bit mean-spirited. Don't you want to see other people make it? I mean that in a nice way--I'm not being critical. And, yes, it is all about survival. Cool. Consider this... what if the gear or loot you destroyed might have been found by the very player who just might have saved your life? And may you never break your legs and find yourself without a morphine injector. You: Hey, dude, help! I busted my ankle... The Other Guy: Oh? Aren't you the guy who ruined everything not in your immediate possession? Hear what I'm saying? Maybe you can be hyper-vigilant and are successful in ruining all the loot and gear (past and future... let's forget about respawning stuff for the sake of my argument). You'd be the only person in Chenarus equipped to survive. What then? You can always set yourself up as a warlord, I suppose. I just hope you can keep all of your subjects alive. Again, you're trying to solve what you see as a problem for your survival. And it is creative... OK? Your idea is one way to go about weeding out any competition but, man, you are going to end up friendless and soooo alone in a world full of zombies.

On a budget, What would it take for me to play dayz at good fps.
tarascon replied to cohen (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
^ Thank you. I felt bad that the guy wasn't getting his relevant and basic OP answered. -
I know, right? When his "bodyguards" are trying to teach him about The Force he talks over them and will ask something like So what sort of music do you like? *eyeroll* Or when they're volunteering to guide him somewhere and he'll agree to follow behind them... and 10 seconds later he goes bolting off in some random direction forcing them to haul ass back to him so he doesn't get clocked. He admitted that he's never played MMO's before and sometimes I gotta wonder if he thinks his pals are just AI characters. But, yeah, ya gotta love the guy.

Reading is good for you. ;) The OP made some great observations... I know how that goes though. I tend to write in paragraphs (as you all have surely noticed). And I know that folks on the other forum I frequent (an expat Demonoid forum... I'm reformed, btw) don't have the patience to read other people's posts. It's all about getting your post in. It's sort of like people who, when you're talking, are running a script in their heads about what their gonna say as soon as you shut the hell up. lol

On a budget, What would it take for me to play dayz at good fps.
tarascon replied to cohen (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
There's plenty of tweaks you can make on your existing system. I did these and it made a huge difference. 1) Go to your Steam account, right click on DayZ and go to Properties and then Set Launch Options The links below will explain the command string you can add. Mine looks like this: -nosplash -noPause -cpuCount=2 -maxMem=6144 -exThreads=2 The exact string phrasing will depend on your system specs. 2) Turn off your in-game notifications for Steam. 3) In-game Config tweaks 4) Find your computer DayZ files and lower the numbers in Notepad and save... Example, the view distance number. I think the default is 300000. I set mine to half that. It'll make trees in the distance look blocky but it's better than low FPS, right? But try to see how that's done online and follow the recommendations. The links below should give more advice. 5) Before you play the game, log in and then hit ctrl/alt/delete and bring up the Task Manager. Go to Processes and change the Normal setting to High. This will focus all your system's RAM on running the game. This seems to reset whenever you log out of DayZ. Like I said, these links will walk you through the process. Good luck! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl_yuLy_03U http://www.dayztv.com/standalone/dayz-performance-guide-crash-fix/ http://www.bonejunkie.com/dayz-standalone/how-to-increase-fps-in-dayz-standalone-alpha/ -
OK. Thanks for your input. :) I've been thinking about modifying my opinion about seeing him get killed since I began this thread. That's why I asked for feedback on whether he should or shouldn't be tracked and wiped out. Brad is a nice guy... I just think that when his "bodyguards" eventually leave him, he'll be as helpless as a kitten. A harsh measure of apocalyptic reality at the beginning of his DayZ time (like we all have had) may save him grief later. I still think the idea of some sort of in-game bounty is a novel idea. The bizarre thing about "the question of Brad" is that somewhere someone is willing to actually pay X amount of RL cash to see this happen. It's a trip.

Do you leave your morality at the door?
tarascon replied to tamingatche91's topic in General Discussion
^ What Alogos and Ozar said. I know that this post may piss some people off. That's not my intention... and I intend no judgements. I tend to approach most things ethically and philosophically. And DayZ is a great game for a number of reasons. For me, the game has deep sociological implications as well. It's part of what makes it an important and innovative gaming milestone. Just for the record, I am 58 years old and have been playing some sort of computer game since text-based games like Zork. Regarding "torture play" and morality in DayZ: When I play there is stress, anxiety, and sometimes panic when I get jumped. These feelings are real emotions and have real world repercussions on my physiology. That's how we're wired and it doesn't matter that what we experience is virtual. I haven't actually shot or killed another person in the game but I'd like to think that when I do, I too will have some sort of a neurobiological response. I may feel remorse. But I think not because that's partly what the immersion is all about. It's about survival. If I have a problem with another survivor and I see no way to escape, I will shoot to kill. This torturing business is, frankly, beyond me and I don't see the purpose. It's certainly not fun and it certainly isn't needed to simply survive. Knock the person out, handcuff them, or kill them if you need/want their loot. Would you be willing to, say, water-board a human being in RL? Probably not. Why would torture in a game be morally any different? I'm not talking about the scene in GTA5. The developers wanted to make a point, I think, about where our civilization seems to be heading. It's not fun to watch but I get it. I believe the consequences of torturing in an MMO like this does have real, damaging effects on a player's psyche. Maybe not immediately (and done repetitively) but within a given span of time it surely will. That is, unless the person playing is already callous about suffering in general. When I was 19 I served in Vietnam and I saw a person tortured. It's really not a fun thing to witness. End of lecture. ;) -
OK. I can see that... I should have added a question mark to the thread title. That's a question of semantics. But that's not exactly the same thing as saying "Kill This Guy". I am in total agreement with your last point about bandits, etc. But, again, I am not saying do this or do that to poor Brad. Certainly not torture him--I personally am against that in any MMO. I rather like the KOS thing 'cuz, until the zombies become a real threat, that adds real tension to the play. To repeat, I think of my OP as reportage of something which someone else has said. I own that I wouldn't mind seeing him killed if only so he can get a sense of how pampered he's been. That's my opinion. Period. And I closed my OP by posing a question to the fora about that.

How long will items I have placed persist?
tarascon replied to SlickShoes's topic in New Player Discussion
^ Good to know. Thanks. -
Agreed. And I also don't want to see Brad stop uploading his DayZ stuff. It is compelling and I thank you for supporting my rights to an opinion but I just want to clarify that I didn't want to make my OP sound like I'm calling out a hit on him. Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing him taken out but I wouldn't do that myself. And I'd hate to see Brad's game spoiled by being specifically targeted. I'd really hate to see the guy go. I may be contradicting myself but I do like the concept of a bounty (like on an especially egregious serial killer bandit). I just wanted to hear what folks thought of this development.

How long will items I have placed persist?
tarascon replied to SlickShoes's topic in New Player Discussion
That's a good question, OP. On YouTube, I've seen bandit clans stash all kinds of food and extra backpacks (full of stuff) in an apartment in Eletro. Like I mentioned on another post, these guys must play in shifts to guard that room. That made me wonder about how long unequipped stuff lasts. Korsbaek and Boneboys may be right. I hope not because I'm about to try and use an isolated house in the north to do the same. -
Is it worth buying Dayz standalone yet? [With Developer responses]
tarascon replied to Blade4777980's topic in General Discussion
I think it's worth it for three reasons. 1) The current players are test subjects in the sense that Bohemia can figure out what works and what doesn't. They then can focus on the fixes and prioritize them. 2) Our money helps Bohemia afford a larger crew to work on the game. 3) Us early players will gain much needed experience before the game becomes hyper-populated. We'll be old hands at surviving. -
^ You made me laugh. Yes, like I mentioned 2x in my OP, I like the guy and enjoy his uploads (I started watching him with The Last of Us). I just happen to think that he doesn't quite experience DayZ in the same way as the rest of us... his game pals are inadvertently crippling his experience. I intend to write a book about some of the weird stuff in MMO's. Sociologically, I find it fascinating. EXAMPLE: I played LOTRO for quite a while and at one point I had a player who stalked my Elve toon. He thought my avatar was sexy. Sheesh! How does that even work? All Elvish toons look the same... I was patient with him and tried to explain game etiquette but he was persistent. If "he" was even a male in RL. I see the bounty on Brad in the same light; it's an interesting meta-game development. That's really the point of the thread. On a side note, it's never been my style to flame people on forums and I feel a little bad about my response to Sistanas. Still, I'm sticking to my guns and will not endure being flamed for my opinions.
-
I don't think you're being offensive. You're just voicing your opinion. :) At least, you didn't call me a douche. lol I don't really care about "some streamer"... the way I see it is that I'm reporting an interesting turn of events.
-
Really? What are you, like 15 years old? Why are you so angry? Go reread my OP. I'm not calling him out--I'm just commenting on a very strange fact. I'm not the guy who set the bounty nor am I asking people to "kill" him. Yes, his play style is his business but I do have a right to my opinion on it. I happen to think he needs to start over so he can experience the same harsh realities we all have and will face in the game.
