    Please, say NO to helicopters.

Actually, they could do this only because admins have the ability to see all player and vehicle locations within their server's database. This issue would only surface if you were playing on a private server with abusive admins. The mod was flooded with those types of servers at one point. I was a very skilled pilot in the mod and could easily land in most places for quick evacuations\quick pickup for a player if needed, but I would say I tried to spend the least amount of time in the air as possible. Since tracking helicopters on foot is very easy once you get the hang of it, I considered all flight time a huge risk. I also understand people are upset, because the helicopters can have a great view of everything via 3rd person.....it's one of the the main reasons I don't play 3rd person.....if you catch my drift.

I disagree with your take on helicopters as far as camps are concerned. In the mod, camps were easy to find because you would be able to see vehicles, tents, etc. If objects like backpacks, weapons, or crates are persistent they will be difficult to spot on the ground. As for controlling the map, I agree to a fine point. There is the advantage of being able to take off and pick up your friends on a whim, but it does make you a giant target in terms of tracking. I used to track the direction of helicopters all of the time in the mod. I would say 8/10 times I would be able to follow it back to the pilot's campsite. As a pilot, you never true know if you're landing zone is safe. Also, since they are supposedly reworking the vehicles anyways, I should mention that actual helicopters require maintenance after every flight. They are the most difficult and expensive civilian type aircraft to maintain.

  4. I'm not going to link it here, but you can get private lan servers up and running. It involves using a cracked dayz .28 exe. Small features like flashlights, energized status, and hydrated status don't work though. It will play just fine aside from that. You can setup your own database and essentially do everything that is listed above here from modifying load outs to player positioning. You would have full control to kick/ban players that might be hacking or breaking your own server rules.
  5. While they both are going for the zombie survival aspect etc...both will be completely different games. I loved the old school medal of honor and call of duty 1 & 2 growing up. I'd love to have both in my collection. Also, don't forget about the modding community for Dayz.

Something to get our hopes up concerning vechicles....

You're completely right. I can't believe I forgot about the origin of the word.

They barely work and are definitely not ready for the standalone. I ran into quite a few crashes and bugs testing them on a .42 server yesterday. The video that OP referenced is from the Kortal servers. It's a cracked server version of dayz and the cars "function" on .42. In all honesty, we're going to be much happier waiting for vehicles to be done right rather than forcing them into the game.

When I saw videos of people driving vehicles in the standalone, I wanted to figure out doing it myself so I did just that. You use basic arma tools to unpack the pbo's/bins/mission files, edit them with a text editor, then repack the pbo's etc. This is how you also see dayz mod servers with custom content and scripts on them. I wouldn't call it hacking what so ever.

Also, the vehicles only work on version .42 as far as driving them is concerned. In .43 they cut out a huge chunk of data in the vehicles_wheeled.pbo that enabled the use of vehicles. They will only spawn as static objects in .43. This method also only works if you are setting up a private lan server using a cracked .28 executable.
  10. Exactly this! In the mod, I only carried what I would need for basic survival in a single trip and enough to last through a quick engagement in combat. I left anything extra back at camp.

    "Frankie" Hero mentality

I never play as a hero, but I think that play style would become easier once non lethal rounds or tranquilizers are introduced to the game. It would be much easier for a hero if they could subdue the potential attacker before getting close enough to risk death.

When does your "switch" flip during an encounter?

I'll generally only let players live if they provide some interesting conversation. If I hate their voice or if they immediately squeak friendly while moving towards me I won't hesitate to pull the trigger. Another big factor is how well they are geared up, where we are located on the map, and if there's an opportunity for a clean kill. For example, I met a player in the NE airfield while looting one of the buildings. He immediately shouted friendly and engaged in some decent conversation, then we proceeded to loot the remaining buildings together. After looting, I noticed that he had a PU scope on his Mosin and I started to notice by his body language and our friendly conversation that I would have a chance. I asked him if he had any extra blue shirts on him so I could join the chernarus police force and while he was turned away checking his inventory I popped him right in the head. This whole encounter probably lasted a couple of minutes.
