Why do zombies spawn out of thin air (experimental)
finnpalm replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Right you are. It's not your thread. Let me correct that last part: This thread is posing a question with an obvious answer in General Discussion. Can you see how people might think it's a whining thread? -
Because it's not realistic.

Why do zombies spawn out of thin air (experimental)
finnpalm replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
I know. That's what the ;) was for. But you are saying you don't like the zombies as they are currently. The thing is: - They're a placeholder (and I know you said you don't like placeholders as well). - They're a test. If the only thing you don't like about them is that they spawn in thin air (which I have yet to experience) then why not just wait until they fix that? They probably just want to test if this system is going to work before they spend time on fancy "stand up from prone, hidden in the grass" animations or trackers that check where your character is looking to spawn zombies behind you, or spawning them behind terrain so that zombies come stumbling out from behind a bush etc. It's wasted work if the system isn't working at all. The title of the thread is a pretty irrelevant question. "Why do zombies spawn out of thin air?" The obvious answer is "Because they're not finished. They're still being tested". Of course they're not going to leave it as it is. So more constructive feedback would be to name the thread "Suggestions on how to make zombie spawning more immersive" and place it in the Suggestion forum. You're posting a question with an obvious answer in General Discussion. Can you now see how it comes off as "whiny"? -
If you're thinking of having those items for hunting game, fine. If you'd like to have them to attack other players with, I'm gonna go ahead and say no. ;)

Why do zombies spawn out of thin air (experimental)
finnpalm replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Ok, maybe I should clarify, because I have yet to see a zombie spawn out of thin air. I was in a town, and got hit by a zombie. I saw another one approaching but it was of the slower kind so I thought I would have the time to bandage so I dropped my shotgun on the ground. However other zombies came running from behind houses and from inside a courtyard and attacked me so I had to run and find a different spot. And bandage again, because I started bleeding again. It took me four tries to get back to my shotgun and pick it up. Three of the times I started bleeding from zombie attacks. I eventually decided to try and shoot them with my revolver. That didn't make things any better though. I thought I was going to die several times. I managed to get out of there, with my shotgun. So yes, I had an awesome time. I'm sorry you guys don't like being attacked by zombies in a zombie game. ;) -
Fair enough.

Thoughts? No. Poisons act far too slowly. Check out a documentary of people hunting monkeys with blowpipe and curare tipped arrows. It takes a while before the monkey actually is paralyzed and fall out of the tree. And curare is a very potent poison. The reason for this is that an arrowhead can only hold a small portion of poison which might work on small animals, but an adult human might actually be able to handle it pretty well.

Why do zombies spawn out of thin air (experimental)

The new zombies are awesome, and responsible for my most intense and adrenaline pumping moments in the game yet. -
I'm not so sure about that. It will leave a huge, gaping hole, that's for sure. But take the arm off? It's not like you fire a scythe blade. I have a 7.62 bullet lying around somewhere here, that I found at the range. The way the bullet bloom after hitting something will tear a big exit hole, but the entry hole will still be small. I would guess that it will shatter the joint and rip of the scapulae, but the arm will still hang onto the body, although useless.

Yeah, I jokingly call this a forest walk simulator when talking to my friends. Because I mostly walk when getting from point A to point B. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I would guess that your food and drink goes down faster when you jog or sprint. Either way, like I've stated before, I enjoy exploring and checking out the scenery so that's my main reason to walk.

I know they're not dead. That's why I wrote "dead".
-
I've always imagined the zombies' bloodflow have started to sort of slow down and turn into a slow running black-red goo (thicker the longer they've been "dead"). So basically no bleeding. But that's just the way I imagine it.

How Did They Know My Player Name?
finnpalm replied to Nastradamus87's topic in New Player Discussion
I've heard that there is a hack that shows a box around a character and their player name above it, that apparently have been seen in the standalone. If that is true it can be that he was a hacker maybe? EDIT2: Sorry, orlok. Didn't know it was locked. -
That's because your character holds it's breath to steady the aim when aiming with a scope.

I occasionally eat rotten fruit (haven't tried the berries yet) if I'm hard pressed for food in-game. I however make sure I always carry charcoal tablets with me for such occasions.
-
You're welcome. Good luck. Apart from that it's a nice video. Good for all those number crunchers out there. ;)
-
I've heard this too. Isn't it already in?

Ok. You made one pretty serious mistake in the experiment. The fact that a ruined assault vest and a ruined t-shirt gives the same amount of protection, and a ruined t-shirt and no t-shirt give the same amount of protection. The point is that ruined clothing give no protection at all which is the conclusion you should have drawn. Therefor the red graph symbolizing the assault vest is in no way a given. The graph should not include ruined items, and in that case the assault vest graph may just be the same incline as the other graph, only higher. To clarify, your red assault vest graph is not necessarily wrong, but you can't base it on the results you presented. You need to test with two assault vests that are of different quality other than ruined and compare them.

Pending Changelog: Experimental Branch: 0.42.116002

Axed from the DayZ Wikipedia article: "The development has been focused on altering the engine to suit the game's needs" -
I would also like it if taking off your shoes indoors would remove almost all sound. Also since there are different shoes for different purposes they should give bonuses. Like for example jungle military boots have a description that says they're suitable for humid conditions and should therefor not get damp or soaking wet as easily. Rubber boots not at all naturally. Boots or shoes that have a description saying they're made to protect the feet when walking over uneven surfaces should lower the risk of broken bones.

When I play it goes a bit like the Hardcore suggested, although I genuinely enjoy sightseeing. The map is beautiful and I use an online map (which I consider to be a light kind of cheating but useful now during alpha when I really just want to check everything out) to find places I haven't been to and go check them out. I have been pretty much all over the map by now, with few exceptions. I can say that watching the sun go down from the top of Devil's Castle is spectacular. I spawn wherever, and the first thing I do is orient myself on the map. Either I recognize the place from before, or I look for a road sign telling me the name of the nearest towns. After that I try to find food and a bandage just in case, and hopefully a melee weapon. After I've gotten myself up to "healthy" or close, I start traveling. Every place that I pass by I check the loot spots for anything useful, basically food, drink or a backpack. I also change clothes to get more slots. Then I just keep traveling. Picking up useful things along the way. Stopping by the occasional water pump to refill my water container. Hopefully I find a weapon to defend myself with. If I pass an airfield or military base I will take a quick look if it looks deserted and if I do it's a "quick in - quick out" and then I travel again. When I log out I find a safe spot where few players will be passing by and log there. Either under a pine tree or in an upstairs room in a house, or something like that. I very much enjoy my little forest walks during daytime, and when nighttime comes I navigate in the dark, watching the treeline against the nightsky (I have gamma at about 30% or less). The rest of the time I spend experimenting with the game, testing the different types of gear in game and such. When I find a bug I take a few screenshots if possible and report or upvote on the feedback page. Occasionally I'll run with a couple of friends, and we've mostly focused on looting so far, although they have been doing other things when I haven't been on. I meet the occasional person, and depending on what I feel like I'll make contact or not. I've stopped and talked to fresh spawns, once joined up with a guy who later met up with a couple of friends of his and we ran together for a while until I got lost and couldn't find them. Once I was hiding (on experimental) in a house in the middle of night, when I saw a flashlight flicker outside the windows for a while. I stayed quiet and sat there with my rifle aimed at the door. The person never came in. Basically I'm using the alpha to get a good idea of what the game might be when it's finished. Taking my time to test all the new stuff and so on. Later when the game is more "complete" I might change my playstyle radically, depending on who I run with mainly. I might be considered a "hardcore" player. I mostly use 1pp even on regular servers. I don't hop, unless a server I'm on shuts down. To each their own.

I have a suggestive/explict dayz themed experience that I'm dying to share

I'm curious though. Did he still take your stuff after the "act"? -

Congratulations. You met an empathic person who interpreted your emotions through your voice, and felt remorse thus deciding to take it easy, because even though it's "just a game" you can indeed affect people emotionally and mentally through your actions towards them in the game. This is called "catharsis" and is a very strong psychological tool. The same goes for the opposite, being nice to someone and then betraying them in the worst, most gruesome way possible. People need to keep in mind that they are interacting with other people through this game and that their actions can have real life consequences.
