O look, another PvP thread

"I assume you just read the title of the post." True.

O look, another PvP thread

This horse barely has a rib left. I'll just repeat what I said last time "The pvp aspect is a gameplay draw. The interaction between people is interesting to watch play out in side chat. It's like watching a horror movie =D. The cautious interaction is one of my favorite "features", and best of all it's a natural byproduct of life in the zone."

Tents

They are useful for long term storage of gear. They are persistent, but tied to the server you set it up in. Say you set up a tent in US2 and put a bunch of car parts in it. Whenever you log into US2 your tent will be where you left it with the car parts you left. Unless someone comes by, finds your tent, and jacks your shit. Otherwise they are like a savespot for gear...on said server.

Ye olde direct voip fiasco.

I got mine to work by making a specific button (home) assigned to PTT for direct. Then, in game, don't change channels. That's just me though.

IF this was an actual game...

Sheep Hunt

A quick video I tossed up to test out fraps. Also includes a song I'm working on specifically for DayZ. Nothing special, but I thought I'd share anyway :)

Sheep Hunt

Thanks for the feedback. I was going for a Day of the Dead kinda feel, I'll make some tweaks to the tones. It's still a WIP.
8. Limeni, it'll pop up if you injure yourself as well. It's just an icon to warn you that 'IF' you disconnect while the icon is up, you will be punished when you next spawn in. The punishment is a 3 minute nap basically. Rocket confirmed this elsewhere. I'll try to find the quote and re-post. (EDIT: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=791 there is the link. Hope this clears it up.

Weird Map Markings

hm, I wasn't aware you could put anything on the map but the circled x's? What do you have to push ctrl or something while clicking the map? (EDIT: Oh! ok, I found it)

Weird Map Markings

I saw something like this on one of the NY servers once. It was Attack routes and egress options, but they were different. The markings weren't just the circles x's, but dotted lines and a couple other symbols. It also had a list of unit types, one officer, one medic, two grenadiers, and three soldiers. Never got to check it out, but I thought it was weird. A few other people saw the markings on their map as well.
11. Damit is right. It's the warning to let you know disconnect punishment is in effect. From either self damage, or player damage.

Bandit tips?

Er, there are less than I thought. The ones that are up there have some pretty decent info though.

Bandit tips?

There are 3 or 4 stickied threads all about tips and tricks...for bandits and survivors.
14. I have an excellent use for tents. I found a couple satchel charges, so my plan is to put a tent in a prime spot. Place a satchel inside. Wait for someone with decent gear to check it out. BOOMS!!

Why the Anti PvP arguments are pathetic

Agree with Mitey. The pvp aspect is a gameplay draw. The interaction between people is interesting to watch play out in side chat. It's like watching a horror movie =D. The cautious interaction is one of my favorite "features", and best of all it's a natural byproduct of life in the zone. (Side note: I've been playing since...whenever I made this account...a month? anyway, in a months worth of gameplay I've managed to get by having only 4 other players.)
16. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but personally I prefer direct. First I binded a PTT key (home) to the direct channel. Then when you're in game don't switch channels at all EVER! Do not hit , or . at all in game. It's kind of a drag not being able to speak globally and a n00b needs to be laughed at, but sometimes we gotta keep it real. It won't help if you don't have a mic, but if you have a mic and want to talk in direct, this is what did it for me. Hope this helps. (side note: these tips were on the forum somewhere, but I couldn't find them again so I thought I ought to make a thread to see if this works for anyone else.)

-My Ongoing Adventure- Part 2 When I woke the next morning I checked on my gear. Most of it was still there, but I was missing my spare glock, and a couple of magazines. I suspected some sneaky ninja had dug around my tent whilst I was asleep, so I abandoned it in the woods. I continued my journey North towards the best airfield Chernarus has to offer. I figured if rescue was coming, it would be there. As I neared Sosnovka I noticed quite a few zeds wandering in the open. I ducked into the forest and pulled out my binoculars. After a few moments I noticed another survivor sneaking about. He went inside a couple of buildings and was doing a pretty good job of sneaking around the zeds. I made a couple of attempts to contact, but with no response I decided it would be better to bypass the town entirely. No need to foolishly approach someone who may or may not have good intentions. Chances are these types are so scared shitless that when they see another human being they don't know what to do except murder them outright. I arrived to Pustoshka and it was relatively quiet, save for the birds and my footsteps. It was a bit eerie, a song began to play. I assume it came from one of the abandoned houses, but it didn't really help my mood as it was a pretty dark sounding song. During my rummaging I heard a twig snap. Quickly, I ducked under the window sill. Footsteps were drawing nearer. Slowly I peeked over the edge of the window. A zed was meandering about. He was within 15 meters of the house I was in, and a couple more were wandering in the distance. "Shit!" I thought to myself. I packed the cokes and pork -n- beans cans into my bag and crept to the door. As luck would have it, the moment I peered out to find him was when he was looking directly at the door. With a loud groan he charged me. I fell back into the house and kicked the door shut. I pulled my revolver out and watched in silent terror as the dust on the door was being pounded away by the enthusiastic monster that wanted more than a can of beans for lunch. Suddenly *BOOM*. The door flung open, slamming so hard into the wall it jammed itself in the hole it created. The zed lurched forward and with a quick exhale I squeezed the trigger. My battle had begun, and was about to get a lot worse. The round found a home in his left eye socket. His head popped back so far I thought I had blown it clean off. The first shot alerted the other undead freaks in the area. I decided to work my way into the dining room, hoping the table would be enough of an obstacle to slow them down. There was about five of them, all trying to get in a small doorway. They jammed themselves up a bit on their way in. I managed to keep cool and methodically raised the sights on my revolver. Each round needed to find their mark precisely, and they did. In all, six dead zeds with gunshot wounds to the head. I emptied my revolver and the jingle of empty shells reminded me of Christmas. For the first time since this started I gave thought to what was happening. These used to be actual people, with their own lives. Now they are hollowed out shells of the former selves...more hollow now. I had to snap out of it. I reloaded the revolver and stepped over the corpses. As quickly as it began, the fight was over. I had to get out of town and continue my travels. During my walk I tried to hum the theme to ducktales, but for some reason it wasn't coming to me. Kind of unusual considering once that song is in your head it's stuck for a week. My stomach started to grumble, so I grabbed some shade underneath a nearby tree. I forced open the pork -n- beans and practically drank it like a milkshake. "I knew I should've packed some silverware...or salt and pepper at least" I said aloud. Sometimes talking to yourself is the only way to get through times like these. I popped open a coke and lit a smoke. This would be most relaxed moment on my journey. I dropped the butt into the empty coke can and left the scraps. I needed the room in my pack and who was gonna complain about litter in this new world? I packed up and continued when suddenly I remember the ducktales theme. I hummed the first two verses before I saw it. The empty towers and dull, grey walls surrounding the airfield. I crouched and jogged towards an opening in the fence I found. Evidence of others before me. I hugged the ground and crept forward. Hoping for the best, fearing the worst, I crested the hill obscuring the runway. Empty. A cow had made a new home of the once proud facility. I peered through my binoculars and saw evidence of the fate of those that were here before. Broken down humvees, and dead soldiers littered the hangars where planes used to live. I stayed in my spot for awhile. The sun was starting to set when I saw movement. A group of survivors were scavenging the remains. They were dressed differently though. Wearing camo and head wraps, they looked fairly organized. They had some decent firepower as well. I thought it best to not alert them to my presence. Now would be my best bet to find a place to take refuge in for the rest of the night. I crawled into the trees nearby and noticed a few barracks. When I was completely out of sight I propped myself up to a crouch and walked into the nearest one. I shut the door behind me. I rummaged around a bit and then I found my most valuable possession. An almost new AK with a green dot sight, complete with four magazines. I found a bunk to nestle in. I shut all the doors and propped a chair up against the door to the room I was in. That night I slept with my new AK by my side in a somewhat comfortable bed. I thought to myself how lucky I was to have made it this far. -End of Part 2- -End of Part 2- Stay tuned for part 3

How I Got Direct Chat Working

Really? I switch channels at all and it stops for me. If this works for anyone else then bump the thread so others may have a chance to try it.
20. I'm at work watching one of the Wyatt Earp movies and just realized that the game is like the old wild west. With all the bandits, gunslinging tough guys and all.

The PvP Discussion Thread

imo, the pvp as it stands now is a good thing. It forces players into the precarious steps of earning trust among those around. Believe me, I hate getting popped for being within someones sights, but once you get out of the hell hole of cherno/elektro, and you know how to interact with the new breed of people, you'll live a lot longer. Provided you know how to manage your ammo and food supply. I always scout a town before entering. Sometimes for 20 minutes, just to make sure noone is around. If I see someone I try to identify them and call out. If I can't identify someone I'll be vague about their whereabouts and try to elicit a response. If I get no answer I'll try to avoid contact, or head a different direction. If I get a response I'll fish for clues as to their intent. You can never be to careful. Basically, talking to people in game is like playing poker. You have to bluff and sometimes you have to fold, and sometimes you'll win. It makes for a new and interesting dynamic with player interaction. That's just me though.

DayZ Stories

-My Ongoing Adventure- I had already spent countless hours trying to make peace, and link up with others. After thirty six or thirty seven deaths I had enough. The next time I logged in, it would be different. I awoke in my house just outside Chernogorsk. A small cabin in, what some would call, a very pathetic peninsula. It was still morning, but quite bright. Though the rampant gunfire clued me in to the fact that something wasn't quite right this day. I grabbed a few supplies from my room and head towards town. Surely someone would know what all the fuss was about. As I approached I noticed charred, hollow shells of what used to be not so great automobiles. I saw the grocery store I usually got my baked beans from. Just then a man went sprinting by, without a word. I tried to stop him, but he was too far gone. Quickly I ran into the store to fill up my bag with whatever I could. It had already been ransacked, however I saw my favorite baked beans. Still on the floor like usual. I could hear screams as I zipped up my bag. As I stepped outside I saw another man, though it may have been the same one, running back the other direction. It looked like he was leading a marathon. Seemed like half the town was behind him. It was like when the Beatles came to America and all the teenage girls were after them. Anyway, as he ran past the rest of the sprinters looked my direction and started for me. I darted back inside and noticed the foul, wretched stench and rotten, bloody faces and contorted bodies coming towards me. I hesitantly pulled out my revolver and took aim. As they slowly trickled in I began dropping them one by one until I had made an orderly pile. It would serve as a sign to all who entered S-Mart. Shop smart, then gtfo. Now the only thing to do was to find my friend at his apartment building. As I made my way I noticed a man shooting wildly at others. Dead or not, this guy was on a rampage regardless of circumstance. By the time I got to the apartment building I was already desensitized to the grisly nature of our new lives. My friend was long gone, but I happened to find an akm and a map. Knowing my initial home was in utter chaos I decided it was best to spend as little time there as necessary. I packed up and took off. As I ran north, I heard cracks and whistles whilst the dirt kicked up on either side of me. I was being fired at! I desperately tried to zig zag my way out of there and eventually made it out of range into the trees. I had started a very long and arduous journey that would take me many miles to many places. Once I felt safe enough to rest, I stopped and had a lukewarm coke. I checked the map and saw a fairly large town called Zelenogorsk. I decided that would be my "homebase" as it were. I followed the roads that would lead me there. I came across a couple towns that were completely devoid of life. Well...living life I guess I should say. After digging around a few of the houses I found a new backpack, and some useful supplies. A tent, a knife, and some matches would be my new prized possessions. Most importantly, I found a pair of binoculars. By the time I got to Zelenogorsk, it was becoming dark. In the distance I noticed a live person with a live gun! Quickly I ducked into some bushes and peeked through my binoculars. I watched carefully as he ran around town. After a few minutes, he had the whole city chasing him. I thought to myself "maybe I should help this guy" but I was hesitant. He ran inside a building and the shambling mass struggled to get to him. Just then I saw someone else run out of a barn nearby the trapped man. I saw his nametag, don't ask me how...I could just see who he was. He ran towards the trapped man and just then the undead horde began dropping to their knees. Some of them turned towards arka. I assumed the worse for the man in the building and watched arka as he ran back to the barn. Slowly he picked off each of the zombie, slobs. I called out to him to see what his response would be. "arka, are you friendly?" I asked as I watched him through my binoculars. He responds with a solid yes. I am still hesitant to approach him. I try to dig a little more info out of him. Eventually we agree to meet. We loaded up on some supplies and he said he wanted to show me something. It's always a little weird when someone you just met says "hey, let me show you something". I was apprehensive initially, but he had to lead the way, so worst case I could shoot him before he swung around. He led me to a tent he had setup. He said anything inside I could take. Naturally I grabbed a compass and an extra box of .45 ammo. He said he'd been camping out here awhile and was trying to help out other survivors that came by. I thought it was a very nice gesture. Also, a very dangerous one. I had learned by this time to be very cautious when dealing with others. Trust was a fading commodity. If there's one thing I learned from horror movies, it's be vague when talking to others. About anything. Trust is earned in this world. The sun was starting to set, and it was getting quite dark by this point. So we shook hands and set about our ways. I ran off into the forest near the big city of Zelenogorsk and setup my camp for the night. I built a fire and cooked some meat I had taken from a cow that...well screw the cow, I was hungry for more than beans. Drank a very warm coke and hit the hay. This is the end of day one. Well, day zero I suppose. I will add more to this tomorrow. All of this occurred a couple days ago already, so I have a few good parts coming ;).

24. Date/Time: 4/27 06:20 What happened: Saw some people lighting up flares at a distance so I tried to take a peek through my binoculars, and when I saw the flares, they lights went out. I could see where the flares were, but the light the flares were giving off was not showing. So a light source not producing any light. Where you were: NW Airfield. The main strip. What you were doing: I was lying prone, observing through darkness. *Also other info such as: -Current installed version 1.4.23 -Server(s) they were on Can't quite remember. Either Dallas, or one NY 1? -Your system specs Intel I7 960 @ 3.2 GHz 6 GB RAM Win 7 64 bit GeForce GTX 550Ti -Timeline of events before/after error Scavenging in US1. Server went down so I reconnected to Dallas or NY1. It was dark as soon as I spawned in, and the position I was at, I could see the flares lit up. Checked out what was going on through binos. Saw the area is it should have been lit up, then the light given off by the flare went out, though when I removed binos the area was still lit. They tossed a few more flares and I tried again with same result. Disconnected from server because I was tired of darkness, and I couldn't make out how many survivors there were ;).
