These M4 kids need to be dealt with.

I'm with the other guys on this one. I think one of the main draws for a game like this (and definitely the arma series) is the fact that they spend a lot of time modelling the weapons to be accurate in-game representations of their real life counterparts. That is to say the weapons are modeled to behave in game as they would in the real world. Weapon balance is more of an issue in other more action oriented games.

    I ducking hate you bandits

Tis a violent land, this Chernarus. Try not to let it get you too down. It's annoying as all hell, and I've had my share of rage quits...but I always come back. It's good to be careful, but sometimes someone just gets the drop on you and you can't do anything about that except try to fight back and survive. I'd say try not to get attached to your gear. I travel pretty light myself, carrying only a revolver. Just remember. There are a lot of assholes out there, but there are a few decent guys as well. I've made some good pals with some of the other friendlies I've encountered. We stay friendly, but we're not above killing anyone who means us or any helpless bambi harm. It's not an easy playstyle, but it certainly is fun. Good luck, but most importantly...try to remember to have fun.
  3. While playing around on experimental I found a couple of the berry bushes. Below is a quick video I slapped together. Further below is information on foraging. This is the original unaltered video. I'll put a link to the brighter version at the bottom of this post. Foraging information: There were some points I neglected to make within the video so I will make them here. Not all bushes have berries. I've heard the berry bushes have small specks of red or blue, but while making this video it was quite dark and I couldn't tell. I just ran up to bushes hitting the action key and if an animation started I knew I had a berry bush, if not I would continue. On a side note, while editing I noticed a small dot would appear when 'using' the berry bush. It's a bit hard to spot, but for those of you familiar with the action menu and its placement...if you go up to a bush you suspect has berries then scroll your mousewheel. If a small dot appears where the 'action menu options' should be then you know you're at a berry bush. Something else I noticed while foraging was that berries would sometimes appear in the 'vicinity' tab of the inventory. While the animation cycles hit your inventory key and keep an eye out for berries to appear. I was able to dbl click them and add them to my inventory even when it said "no berries found". I think that was all I had to add. That's all I can remember at the moment anyway. [EDIT: Here is the link to the brighter version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9njO19pkIY]

Will you take the red berry?...or the blue berry?

UPDATE!! I was quite sick when I logged back in. In the red kind of sick and my screen greying out. So I took the last of my antibiotics and made sure to eat and drink constantly to keep myself energized and hydrated. I decided I would head to Berezino and see if I could find someone willing to inject me with saline. I had the saline on me so it was only a matter of finding someone friendly enough to help out. After a bit of running I approach the eastern outskirts. I should mention that I had managed to find an SKS and some ammo back at Krasnostav. Not wanting to appear hostile, and also not wanting to run into someone that wanted my weapon I made the decision to drop my rifle in a bush just outside of town. So I stashed the gun and headed in. It only took a few minutes before I ran into another survivor. I called out and explained my situation and asked if they would help in exchange for food. Luckily this person was cool and so I got my saline, and he got some food. As we are trading another two survivors come into the bar. We talk and decide to barter a few items. Seemed like everyone was in a good mood. We decided to group up and headed to Svetlo. I stopped by the bush and grabbed my rifle and off we went. A merry band of strangers. After about thirty minutes my sickness was gone and I had made a few new pals...and we all lived happily ever after. All in all, a pretty good session.

    Joining Experimental

Right click on Day Z in steam then click properties. In the box that pops up will be some tabs, click "Beta". On the drop down menu is "Experimental". Click that and let it download. Note that you'll have to find experimental servers if you intend to test. There is usually only about four up at a time, you'll know they are the correct ones if they have a little green dot on the left. Also note: Experimental is not stable and can sometimes crash a lot. Many people on experimental are there testing out features, or messing about to test other things. [EDIT: Oh, I re-read that. I let the server bar refresh and load up everything. Then sort the list. For me the experimental servers pop up at the top every time. Hopefully that works for you as well.]

    Killing Unarmed Players

Chronic paranoia. Sociopathic tendencies. Killing everyone on sight immediately. These are some of the traits of your average player of Day Z. I offer you something different. [For some reason I imagined canon in d while writing this...so use your imagination and pretend this is some kind of "feed the world" speech] With all of the kill videos from dayz I thought it would be good to show how the other side lives. Especially to our friendliest of bambis who may or may not enjoy hiding from everyone. The bambis are the most impressionable of our community. They know far too much about instantaneous death by hatchet. They have seen the cruels of our community be it forced feeding...forced stripping...even forced reading. They must know that there are also a few people who'll just hand out an open can of beans every once in awhile. Seriously though...this video portrays a once in a thousand occurence. Even for me...though I'll be helpful about 40 to 50 percent of the time. So grab a gun and hide in the corner bambi...and hope you find me on a good day. Let's see if someone is silly enough to just read the title and respond without reading or watching. Also, the traits described above do not reflect the real life traits of an average day z player.

    Everyone is Friendly!

I was recording some footage over the weekend and had a surprising amount of friendly encounters with random players. Granted this is not the norm, but I was happily surprised to see this many people not trying to outright murder eachother. [Notes: This was all recorded in two days. A lot of it in the experimental branch. Not all encounters were this happy go lucky.] [EDIT: I want to add a quote from myself from another topic on the idea of playing friendly] "It's possible to be friendly. It's also possible to run into friendlies. Granted it's not incredibly common, but it is still possible. It's easy to get pissed off and want to rage when someone gets the drop on you. I've been there also. This game is pretty notorious for that kind of reaction, but it's those of us that can keep a cool head that stay friendly. Being friendly doesn't mean never shooting and always approaching people. I know I've had to take out my fair share of aggressors. It's about being careful and standing your ground. Sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. There have been other times where myself and someone else have randomly come across one another. I'll try to talk my way out of a situation, and sometimes it ends up working out. We'll exchange food and such and go about our ways. Other times it devolves into a firefight. To me the 'friendly' playstyle is all about playing smart. It can be challenging and downright frustrating at times, but other times it can be fruitful and rewarding. Some of my best mates in-game are people I randomly encountered. We still play together to this day. In the end it's up to you how you want to play. For me, I enjoy the 'friendly' route."

This reminds me of Project Zomboid. Which is a good thing.

    Siege of Elektro - NODE

What a fun premise. Well played, I'm intrigued to see how this turns out now.
  10. What are you on about?! Everyone is friendly! I wish I had captured the encounter I had during my 'doctor' persona. There I was, helping, bandaging, or splinting fresh spawns when this asshole comes up wielding a revolver. I attempted to talk him down, but he still kept coming. My doctor character was a crafty one, he kept only a revolver and always had it concealed in case of this such incident. As he approached I ducked behind the shelf. (This all went down in the market.) I pulled out my revolver and shouted one last time, "back off dude, last warning." He kept coming, so I calmly brought the revolver up to eye level and stood. Before he could realize that this doc don't fuck around POW! Popped him in the chest. Elektro rejoiced and everyone lived happily ever after....for an extra ten minutes at least. :D

    Direct communication bug

Double clicking caps lock will lock it open. It will also close the mic as well. Though I'm not sure about the text staying on screen. That's odd.

    Best experience with other players?

After being attacked in Elektro I went to patch myself up in the woods. A couple guys were passing by and offered me saline and such. Since then we have become good pals and usually play together. Actually I have a video of our first encounter. Sometimes being friendly can spawn a decent friendship.
  13. I'd like to reference a couple of my own videos that show how I play friendly. I won't clutter the post with giant videos, so I'll add a couple links that you can view at your own discretion. The first one is a random encounter I had with someone in berezino. An example of myself being friendly. The second one is a short collection of clips I recorded over this past weekend. Many 'friendly' players here. [EDIT: whoops...it's posting the large videos anyway. I'll try to fix that.]

    your choice in weapons?

I've been experimenting with a new playstyle in which I only keep a sidearm. As far as that goes, I'm a revolver fan. I've been keeping it concealed on my 'doctor' character so as to not seem threatening. Usually I help random survivors and they'll go about their way. Not sure what they would do if they knew I was packin, but for the most part it's working out pretty well. Every once in awhile I'll come across someone who just wants to brawl. Not knowing I have a gun they'll charge me and then it becomes reminiscent of the scene in Indiana Jones...you know, the guy with the sword. Right now, I'm sticking with my revolver.

why are people doing this ?

You should read the bottom of that very quote, champ. If you really want to know my playstyle check out this thread. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/167064-killing-unarmed-players/?hl=%2Bkilling+%2Bunarmed+%2Bplayers Don't be so judgmental there buddy. :) [EDIT: ALSO! If I were that type of player, the "getting someone to let their guard down" is a valid tactic. I agree that it's shitty, and it's happened to me before, but still...if it works, someone will use it.]

why are people doing this ?

oh...is it? I'm getting my arma keys confused again. Sorry about that. My mistake!

How not to love DayZ? :D

Looks like you twisted your ankle on that rock there. That sucks dude, but to be fair, you should have been paying attention to where you were running. Granted I had no idea you could twist your ankle on a rock and I would've been confused and upset, but now that I know...I'm watching my step from now on.
  21. savini

why are people doing this ?

See what I would have done was tried to make friends. Maybe offered you some food and stuff in exchange for protection...then, once your guard was down, POW! right in the kisser! :P [EDIT: That's not how I play though. I have to say if you're running down the coast fully geared...you're just begging to be mugged.]
  22. savini

Stuck on floor/room with no exits.

Try doing the usual steps, but do it when you're at the 'please wait' screen. I was able to escape using that method.
  23. What I meant to say was... There are no heart attacks. The end.
  24. It's explained in the original thread. We don't need more 'heart attack' threads talking about the same issue. [EDIT: This thread, read the last few pages.] http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175477-just-died-of-heart-attack-incredibly-stupid/
  25. savini

Did you really put in heart attacks?

It turned out to be nothing more than the 'welcome' server messages. The other thread has the server info and confirmation. However, it's disappointing to know how willing people have been to argue and bicker over something that no one on either side of the argument knew anything about. It's ridiculous that you would have so much faith in the game that you would blindly accept anything thrown at you without any knowledge of how it would function. It's equally as ridiculous that you would complain and call a mechanic stupid when you also have no knowledge of how it would function. We all enjoy the game and are here playing/testing the alpha of it in order to make it better. When you forget that and blindly accept/hate any change to the game then you're not contributing anything. Form your own opinions and discuss, and most importantly use facts to make up your own mind. I mean...do what you like, but the absurdity on both sides of this 'argument' are ridiculous and make the community look like a bunch of childish twits. Find the other thread, look it up for yourselves.
