You're premise is flawed. When you presuppose that IRL: "...people would shoot each other, some out of spite, out of rage or whatever - but not to the extent that they do in DayZ," you couldn't be more wrong. When resources are tight and people are desperate they will do whatever it takes to survive. They will move to the dark side of human behavior farther, faster, and more often than players do in DayZ. DayZ is a game...if people are really starving or a really in fear for their lives they will react much more intensely than what you find in a game. All that being said, people don't really need the threat of starvation and death to abandoned any sense of human decency. If the systems of consequence are removed from their society they will murder, loot, and pillage with reckless abandon. I refer you to New Orleans in the days following Hurricane Katrina...wanton theft, property destruction, and lawlessness because the good citizens knew there was no police force or legal system in place to stop them. Once the consequences were gone, so went their reluctance to break the law. So no, DayZ isn't an excessive representation of the dark side of humanity...in fact the opposite is true...it UNDER-represents how selfish, vicious, and murderous humans will actually be when times are desperate and there are no systems of consequence to deter them.

One other thing...recent updates have added correct textures for some items with textures didn't properly reflect their condition. If you've been offline for a while it could be this, but I doubt it.

I believe items can only be damaged if you fall, take hits from zombies, or are damaged by other players via fists, melee, or guns. Rain doesn't cause damage and there is no static item-decay process in place.

They have made some changes to the melee system in the latest experimental patch. Looks like Dean must have meant beyond what's planned/in-the-works when he said he's content with the melee system. I've only used the new melee a few times, but I will say that movement with the ax raised (ready to strike) is normal, whereas before when you had the machete raised (which was required to strike pre-patch) you're character moved like they do when aiming down sights with a rifle...slow and choppy...which was very annoying...I'll test the machete today.

When you go back and forth from experimental to stable there will be a file update/download each time. You will keep your characters while doing this though. You should not lose either character when switching back and forth.
