Quick question. In standalone can I create multiple characters?

I have a character that is nicely geared right now but I kind of wanted to try a fresh one so I can mingle around an open area without caring if I died. Am I able to create more then one character on regular? Or is it 1 per regular 1 per hardcore? Thanks.
