Finding different "Roles" to play in DayZ..
Death By Crowbar replied to Irish.'s topic in General Discussion
Before they moved the spawns north I'd sometimes sit in Kamyshovo (town right before Elektro) at the bus stop and ask everyone who passed if they'd seen the bus. This did get funny a few times when people would bite and play along, but the other 2/3 of the time people either didn't get it or fresh spawns would zerg attack me. Oh, and one time I got sniped and never even saw where the guy was. So lame, kill a guy waiting for the bus... I like Mr Moon's video about the "Berezino Salesman", that's some silly stuff. -
Eat, drink, and be merry (but not where you can be seen or heard) Always camp on the 2nd floor of a random building away from good loot. Run like you're evading an alligator - zig zag, never run in a straight line. It's good form to take people hostage rather than KOS, but always mess with and/or torture the hostage a little. Never, never, NEVER assume you are alone or safe.

Too difficult/frustrating in the beginning?
Death By Crowbar replied to MarchmelloMan's topic in General Discussion
One of the first things you should tell your friends is that this is an FPS survival game, and like any FPS, if you stand still and get hit you will die. If you circle zombies via strafing (A or D keys) it's almost impossible for zombies to ever hit, couple that with double tap W to run fast and you're in business. Add to that the skill of zig zagging up hills and then running down them so the zombies kill themselves you can no only survive essentially indefinitely but do so killing zombies without even having to raise a hand/weapon to them. Every time a fresh spawn attempts to stand and duke it out toe to toe with a zombie god kills a kitten... -
First Day of DayZ disappointment
Death By Crowbar replied to Logs (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Trust noone! And don't drink the disinfectant spray! -
When you found the end of the map - did you find the wasteland where there is only hills and no trees or grass or anything, and then a random ocean? I've been out there, I figured all my running would pay off and there'd be something cool but I got no such reward. It was after that when I learned to use the sun to navigate and when lost I run either East and/or South because I know I'll eventually hit the coast where towns and people are.

I need serious help. So lost and no compass or map
Death By Crowbar replied to SLIZARAZO's topic in New Player Discussion
I'd suggest learning the towns on the coast first. It'll take a lot of running (hours and hours) before venturing inland. If you go inland and get lost you can use the sun to find your way back east or south to the coast, but you could be in for a hell of a run depending on how far you go. That being said, inland there's some crazy stuff hidden like castles - but if you go there on a low pop server you're really just sight seeing and unlikely to see anyone at all. Most players you'll find on the north east portion of the coast, basically all towns surrounding Berezino, mainly because that's where most of the spawn points are these days. If you want to do some sight seeing while gearing up and take lower risks head south towards Elektro. Learning where to find fresh water ponds and fountains will help get you hydrated without looking for soda (you can sit there and spam the F button and drink until stuffed). And if you're hungry, if you don't have a can opener you can use other things such as hack saws, screw drivers, axes, etc to open cans (some will spill though, but at least you won't starve). Good luck! -
When I started playing I made a post or 2 like this out of frustration and concern. Pretty much the same type of rant. A lot of people have. However, after time I came to understand a few things and also started seeing some progress after releases were made on Wednesday, I started to stop by Reddit on occasion to see what Rocket (Dean) had to say, and started to watch some videos interviewing staff and hearing what they're up to. Also keep in mind that there's a thread posted on this forum where Rocket is asked, "Should people buy the game yet?" and he responded in a manner that everyone needs to make a personal choice and consider, but at the current price point it's a no brainer. Additionally, two of the biggest things that are being worked on right now are the zombie collision detection / pathing (an entirely new navmesh system is in the works) and also the engine which is being overhauled and finally has a name as of E3 aka "Infusion". They refer to this as "Early Alpha Access" but in some regards one could argue that it's pre-alpha, and understanding all of this it's ok to get frustrated at times but you're basically getting to play the game as it's being built underneath you. Wednesday evenings after releases are pushed to stable (unless you've been playing experimental) you get to look forward to new features, tweaks, and fixes which can be exciting. In the end, you either support the project and are along for the ride or you're not. I think most people who make these types of rants eventually "see the light", start having fun, reporting bugs, and getting involved in the community. People don't take the time to get frustrated and rant if they don't care.

I was going to have a go at making my first fire - and I tried chopping a tree down. I cannot express the pure exhilaration I experienced watching that first tree fall - right across the road where others could see my hard work! I was so amused I started chopping more trees down trying to have them fall across the road as well. After the 4th tree I noticed something - I couldn't chop any more because my ax was ruined! No way! Here comes the punch line - as I'm lost in amusement of fallen trees and frustration over my ruined ax, a fresh spawn comes up to me and stands there. I assume he wants to discuss my illegal tree harvest that was blocking the raod and I'd forgot to put my headset on - so I grab for it and while I'm doing that hands off the keyboard for just *1* second he knocks me out and proceeds to trash talk me and kill me. I was in such a silly mood about chopping down trees I forgot this was BanditZ for a fleeting moment that I paid for. I hope he trips over one of those trees and breaks his leg. I'm going to search for animals to kill to blow some steam off (now that you can finally kill them). I suppose the point of this is there's some neat stuff in this release people have been waiting for that is nice to see entering the game.
-
Probably both (don't care, don't know). It can be fun to explore but you need time to do that - if you're a player that doesn't have more than 30 minutes or an hour to bum around you're likely to stick where there's action. To be honest if all of the spawns hadn't been moved north I think Berezino would be more of a wasteland and more people would be down by Elektro. I think the only way you're going to see a lot of people around the new town is if spawns are moved away from Berezino.

I need to test if force feeding cows disinfectant is possible...

0.45 to stable, my stuff is glowing
Death By Crowbar replied to rotteck's topic in General Discussion
One of the devs was playing Rust and accidentally irradiated half the loot table in DayZ. You should strip naked and run to someplace safe from the radiation, I hear they have lead walls protecting buildings in Berezino? :P /jk -
This is one of those "shoot and ask questions later" situations. He had a gun up first, in one of the most KOS locations you can possibly be. If you hadn't fired there would be only 1 person dead rather than 2.
-
This is pretty silly... I like it.
-
The answer, imo: Make loot persistent. If a server restarts, on shutdown the loot tables should be cached and restored upon startup. Make loot respawn with random roles and intervals. A full pop server that's been up for a while shouldn't be an empty wasteland where people just run past towns where the doors are open. This would decrease the desire to restart. Allow for a restart option that, assuming some timer (possibly linked to the hive it's on?) would allow for a repop of all loot. However, that should be controlled by the rules of the hive so private can do as they please but public can keep some sanity in the system.Being alpha though I think some of these loot pinata servers are ok and arguably necessary to ensure lots of testing is done, so I view it more of a "necessary evil" for the early access alpha.

How often does this happen? (Captured-Released)
Death By Crowbar replied to Ugly (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
This is totally the way I feel - but if you talk to people or watch youtube when people flee the thought of, "Well, you didn't comply now I've got to shoot ya" often comes into play. It's totally Russian roulette, a total coin flip, as to how someone will react. As annoying as that is it adds to many things that keep the game interesting. I normally don't KOS or randomly attack anyone, but one day I was killed 3 times within 10 minutes of spawning and the 4th time I spawned I lost it and ran after the first guy I saw even though I was a fresh spawn and had nothing but my shirt, pants, and an empty stomach. -
There is something good here, and it's generally a lot of fun. What other reason is needed?

Cannot find certain items for the life of me!
Death By Crowbar replied to Ugly (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I find more binoculars up north west of Berezino than anywhere else, check the towns north and especially west of Berezino. -
I would like to take an opportunity such as this and seize it... In handcuffs and then put a burlap sack on its head and run away skipping and giggling.

The scary truth about the firestaton...
Death By Crowbar replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I find fire axes there. Firemen use fire axes! Maybe that "District Department Militia" is a militia against fires as well as holding a police role? Or maybe the sign is wrong, akin to someone switching the signs on the men's and women's bathrooms? -
DayZ moving to new engine - ENFUSION
Death By Crowbar replied to nexventor's topic in General Discussion
SmashT is the commitment to a new renderer "news" as of E3 or has that been talked about before and I simply missed it? -

Death By Crowbar replied to nexventor's topic in General Discussion
What Dean said is, and I quote, "I guess the big news that we’ve been telling here at E3 is that we’re actually moving to a new engine. It is called infusion." Does that sound at all to you like what's been described over the past few months of tweaking the existing engine and points that randomspawn made above? -

Death By Crowbar replied to nexventor's topic in General Discussion
Well - sorta, from what I understand it couldn't be fixed in the existing engine. But Dean seems to clarify that in this Q&A exchange: -

Death By Crowbar replied to nexventor's topic in General Discussion
"Infusion" hasn't been talked about for months - but the existing engine being modified in various ways has been. So no, there is no rock over my head. Rocket announced this at E3 today and unless I'm mistaken it's never been talked about before, or at least not talked about in this manner before. What Dean said is, and I quote, "I guess the big news that we’ve been telling here at E3 is that we’re actually moving to a new engine. It is called infusion." Also if you read the way it's presented in the transcript it's not clear at all that it's what's been talked about for the past few months, it literally sounds as if there was an entirely new platform that was being moved onto. -

Because it makes perfect sense to communicate this sort of information on various social media platforms and not on your official forums first (if at all), right? If the DayZ StandAlone team wanted to make a simple yet powerful change to their approach and better manage the DayZ community that would be one thing I'd recommend addressing. It would be nice to have this sort of information officially communicated where the majority of the community is looking for it.
