Dull colors (greys, blues) and anything remotely cammo are what I usually gravitate to. I avoid anything bright, such as the yellow/red construction helmets, yellow rain coat, bright track suits, etc. ... on occasion I will intentionally dress ridiculously or as bright as possible just to see what people say, but that usually just ends up getting me shot before I can have too much fun with it.

Even with the hit boxes shrunk and possibly off on zombies, they're still easy. Super easy. You can take on 6+ at a time and come out completely unscratched, you'll likely only get hit if there's a desync. If you disagree with what I'm saying here you've got bigger problems, either be sure to choose servers with lower ping or ask someone to demonstrate how to fight zombies via meelee properly. Shooting them is a waste of perfectly good ammo.

They should add some of these which are opening up all over siberia currently!

One does not simply fire with an LRS at close range... Granted there's close range sniping and long range sniping (requires LRS, maybe compensator and bipod). Close range you can do with anything, SKS, whatever, with no scopes, just iron sights. That actually takes some skill, especially because within cities most people run like ants tripping on LSD and are very hard to get a lock onto... unless they're with friends or distracted. However, long range sniping, especially now with the sway, takes a LOT of patience. I don't think it's cowardly, I think it's a part of the game. Never assume you're alone, never assume you're safe, never ignore your surroundings, always know your escape routes, and always know your openings. But again, if you have an LRS and say a Mosin, what are you going to do? You're not going to go looking for a close up gun fight, you're going to use those tools to your advantage and put some distance between yourself and any survivors that you wish to no longer be surviving.

[Be nice] How do you torture people in days?
Death By Crowbar replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in General Discussion
I think of how I would torture someone, but I don't think I could make it better or funnier than this. -
The Good - Heroes. The Bad - Bandits. The Ugly - Stairs in the fire stations or air traffic control towers. Have you ever looked at them closely? This is why you keep breaking your legs and / or falling to your death!

Does carrying a sporter 22 make you a more 'friendly" player
Death By Crowbar replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in General Discussion
Carrying a sporter means you're underarmed, and it's likely not loaded - because honestly noone carries one around once they find something bigger, so you never have a sporter very long. If I run into someone with a sporter I usually assuming I'm as safe as someone unarmed. -
Any of the steep stairs, such as you find in the fire station or the aircraft control towers - avoid them like the plague, that's pretty much what seems to be causing the weird deaths in those buildings. I'll climb ladder on the outside even though it's a higher risk of getting shot I'm not going to suddenly break my legs or insta-die. Until they fix it using those steep style stairs is rolling the dice...

I logged this issue last week: http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=14948 Not sure if that is what you ran into, but I found it odd that all containers or clothing (anything not inside something) was retained but the items inside the containers disappeared. Going back to the server I'd just came from fixed it, somehow. There is definitely work to be done in this area - any time you change servers you do take some risks. If you think it's a bug, don't just gripe about it log it in the bug tracker with any details you can think of. That's the whole point of Early Access Alpha, if you don't submit bugs and feedback it's not going to get addressed.

Where are mosin compensators spawing in current Stable?
Death By Crowbar replied to Zed's Dead's topic in General Discussion
I found one either in the hospital (3rd story where there's just 1 room) or the police station in Krasnostav (town just East of NEAF). -
I just captured what DayZ is currently taking up on my system - there's no way with your OS and the standard load of stuff Windows 7 and Windows 8 use plus any other minor things you installed that have services running that 4GB of RAM is sufficient. This isn't windows XP anymore, any Windows 7 or Windows 8 machine needs minimally 8 GB RAM, preferably 16GB.
-
I did a little testing last night - and my machine with just the Chrome browser open was taking up nearly 4GB of memory. I fired up DayZ and ran around for a bit, and after entering a city I watched the memory consumption of DayZ jump up, and my machine as a whole was using nearly 7GB of memory. Assuming you're running windows 7 or windows 8 I can say with confidence you don't have enough memory on that machine to run DayZ in it's current state without paging to all hell, which I'm assuming is what's happening to you. 4GB isn't really sufficient in general for Windows 7 or Windows 8, you'll start paging from just browsing the web. You should have at least 8GB of RAM, or better yet 16GB.

Have you ever given guns and ammo to freshspawns?
Death By Crowbar replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I've given out loaded handguns to freshspawns/bambis. I've gotten mixed results. 3 months ago I would expect about an 80% rate of thankfulness and no issue, but today I would expect about an 80% rate of getting shot in the face in return. I've also handed out spare splitting axes and stuff, that's also a crap shoot. It depends on how you feel like playing that day - wanna be a hero and feel good, well, that's cool and commendable but always be on your guard. Even when doing good deeds trust noone. -
In a predicament - any sure fire way to orient oneself generally towards Chernarus?
Death By Crowbar posted a topic in General Discussion
So - last night I was attempting a run south towards Elektro and was using my handy pen cap wedged between the keys to hold down "w" so I could run in the general direction without having to keep my finger on it. I was on a lower pop server so I thought it was worth the risk. Long story short, I dozed off, and when I awoke, I was logged out - the server must have reset. Ok, no problem, I logged back in... only to find myself in the middle of the ocean with NO IDEA where I was! I have no idea how far out into the ocean I am nor how long I had been swimming for. I tried swimming in a few sensible directions but no land in sight. In a general sense, I was moving south at the time I got lost, so I believe I'm generally south of Chernarus, and the only reliable way for me to go is a general North West direction to find land again (I don't want to risk North east and go parallel to the coast). I have no compass and am relying on the sun. The sun is flaky, but oddly different from what everyone always posts I've found that having the sun in front of me is generally South, and at my back is generally North. Is that accurate? Looking for help to ensure I'm swimming in the right general direction. I'm energized and hydrated, so sitting here and waiting to starve would take quite a while... -
4 GB Ram might be a little low. I run dual screen and I usually have DayZ on the left and Task Manager up on the right. DayZ sucks up close to 3GB of RAM at times. Depending on what else you've got running that doesn't leave much breathing room before you start paging which is going to destroy performance. If your card is a GTX you should be fine, but your memory looks low, especially if you've got anything else running at all, and even not it seems low.
-
You've got a pretty low end graphics card, I'd wager that's your problem. Here's you: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+6600+GTHere's me: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+650+TiMine is low or mid-low end, but I'm not having the problem. I paid $95 for my card in January 2013.

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
Death By Crowbar replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
They're really not that hard to deal with. For fun on a low pop server I went to Elektro, fired a shot in the air near the market, and with a garden hoe dispatched 6 of them and only got hit twice. You cannot ignore zombies, they're a more significant part of the game now, but in now way truly difficult or impossible. Also filter out any servers where you have a ping greater than 90. I'm facepalming at how many people are having trouble dealing with the zombie changes, they're not that bad. If the server I logged out on last night was high pop and I just auto log in the next morning, even with hardly anyone on the server I'm kept busy with the new zeds, it's rather nice. I don't have to server bounce to whatever is currently high pop to find fun and challenge. In summary: Strafe or circle the zombies, never fight them toe to toe. Aim directly for their center, of if they're moving slightly lead them. You can't just wildly swing in their general direction and expect to hit them anymore. Axes, Hoes, Pick Axes, etc still easily kill in 1-2 shots to the head, there's really no difference there. There are more hoppers now, and this is important because they behave differently and have some known navmesh/pathing issues and are less likely to respect doors, fences, etc. The zed respawns are important now, you're unlikely to find a town cleared out. Zeds are your friend - they're a great early warning system that other players are in the area if used properly. Have fun with the new navmesh stuff and lock them up behind doors, it's honestly a fun and easy way to deal with them. Don't think running upstairs in a 2-3 story building will help you - they'll come right up after you now... meaning unless you've got a ladder to retreat down or you plan to lock them behind doors running into buildings to escape zombies can be a poor choice. -
DayZ Zombies, an attempt to diagnose the zed condition
Death By Crowbar posted a topic in General Discussion
So - about the zombie condition in DayZ... My understanding is that Rocket has stated that these zeds are the "infected" type and not the "undead" type. Thus I've been trying to hypothesize about the nature of their condition, ultimately in the hopes of finding a cure and averting the apocalypse. It would seem the DayZ "zed condition" has commonalities with the following diseases or medical conditions (ganked off Wikipedia):Rabies (/ˈreɪbiːz/; from Latin: rabies, "madness") is a viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and other warm-blooded animals.[1] The time period between contracting the disease and the start of symptoms is usually one to three months; however it can vary from less than one week to more than one year.[1] The time is dependent on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system.[2] Early symptoms may include fever and tingling at the site of exposure.[1] This is then followed by either violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, and fear of water or an inability to move parts of the body and confusion followed by loss of consciousness.[1] In both cases once symptoms appear it nearly always results in death.[1] ... this all makes sense and explains why they're so aggressive and don't seem to need to drink but will attack violently. Osteoporosis ("porous bones", from Greek: οστούν/ostoun meaning "bone" and πόρος/poros meaning "pore") is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. ... this explains why they die falling down hills so easily Tourette syndrome (also called Tourette's syndrome, Tourette's disorder, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, GTSor, more commonly, simply Tourette's or TS) is an inherited neuropsychiatric disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by multiple physical (motor) tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. These tics characteristically wax and wane, can be suppressed temporarily, and are preceded by a premonitory urge. Tourette's is defined as part of a spectrumof tic disorders, which includes provisional, transient and persistent (chronic) tics. ... this explains a lot of their noises and mannerisms. In conclusion, I argue that the infection is some sort of a rabies variant that has additional debilitating side effects that align with the ailments described above. Thoughts? -
Anyone else hear moaning in-game?
Death By Crowbar replied to maninthewall's topic in General Discussion
In cities there are times when I'll be looting and hear/see someone nearby and will make strange noises. There were also times I'd hide in bus stops and run out at people screaming. It could very well just be someone messing with you. When you heard it where were you running and how long did it last? -
to the man i try shot in the face inside shop
Death By Crowbar replied to Shrub Rocketeer ™'s topic in General Discussion
Any time Shrub Rocketeer ™ posts I get short on breath, because for whatever reason when I read I sometime time breaths where periods and normal conversation would allow it. With Shrub Rocketeer ™'s posts it's all one big giant run on sentence and by the time I'm done with it I'm about to pass out from not breathing and laughing at the same time... -
Was this stable or experimental?

Killing zeds is much more satisfying with the ragdoll effect that went live on stable. Sweet! Anyone else enjoying this? I need to test gun and other weapons on zeds (and maybe some people).

[Discussion] Melee, Zombies and Item Swapping Issues
Death By Crowbar replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Wow, getting pretty fiesty with the mods! Since the patch I've taken on 4 zeds at once with no issue - you absolutely MUST be accurate with meelee now. Before the patch so long as I was generally facing a zed I would hit it, now I must be spot on and even lead the target a little it seams. It took some adjusting but I wouldn't in any way call it broken. I think it's better to be honest, it's almost as if the game assist mode has been turned off. -
Things I immediately noticed about today's release...
Death By Crowbar replied to Death By Crowbar's topic in General Discussion
Oh wow... and if you thought you could run up stairs and avoid zeds you're wrong. I'm assuming it's the navmesh kicking in, but every time I try to avoid zeds upstairs or on the roof of a hospital they find their way up. They don't do ladders though... I also managed to get a bug where I couldn't swing meelee, happened right after I killed someone. That was a problem because I was dealing with a zed as well and I tried to flee the zed up some stairs (2 floors worth) in a hospital and it came up both flights after me. I ended up on the roof with a problem on my hands.
