This is why we should use ArmA III's Engine.
Valadain replied to Lordocalot's topic in General Discussion
If it were the mod, I think you'd be right, but they are making some significant fundamental changes to the engine and how it works. Personally, god rays and post processing don't float my boat. In fact, I hate them with a passion, so I don't much care which engine they use. -
My most productive post yet about improving Zombies and game
Valadain replied to Rick1633's topic in General Discussion
No, sorry, I was agreeing with you and saying further, it isn't even determined that beta will be the cut-off if the game still requires his input. Edit: Also fixed my first post so that it didn't sound like I was disagreeing with you and threw you some beans. -

The god rays... they burn. -
My most productive post yet about improving Zombies and game
Valadain replied to Rick1633's topic in General Discussion
This is absolutely correct. Further, he said he'd stick around until they didn't need him and that he only believes this will be beta. So he may even be around in beta should issues still be there that require his attention. Edit: For clarity! -
Yeah, I think they really need to cache up anything that happens to you during that log-out phase so that it can display it on screen when you log back in. Particularly since certain statuses you may have when you log out can make you dead. I too wonder if these aren't character wipes, but maybe the game falsely determining someone is in a state prior to log-out that kills you.

You would know exactly where to go to make it stop. Ever heard the expression, give a person enough rope?

SUGGESTION: Wearing the United Nations Beret puts you into PVE-Only mode
Valadain replied to Charcoal's topic in Suggestions
Here's a tip. Stop thinking of KoS as P and think of them as E. They don't interact with you in any meaningful way, so they are just environmental hazards. If they were AI running around, you would adapt your strategy to play the game. Just because they are real people, you freeze up and just blame them rather than trying to survive them. It makes no sense. -
Trading Area - To reduce shoot on sight mentality
Valadain replied to equeone's topic in Suggestions
I see this suggestion quite a bit. My question is, why aren't those making this suggestion and those supporting it, swapping steam names and going in and creating safe trade zones? I see a lot of people complaining that there is no cooperation or goals for cooperation, but there is one right here. Instead of taking the opportunity, people are looking for a code/server solve. -
The Anti-Game - Why DayZ will stay a crappy game
Valadain replied to tommes's topic in General Discussion
I think the OP is right, but only if you are playing for stuff. If stuff is your goal, this game will suck for you in the short term. The point of the game is not stuff, at least not until base building comes around, but even then it isn't the main point. The point is what you do with the stuff until you lose it and how you lose it. -
I'm guessing a lot of people don't work in the business world or at the level to see this sort of decision making. This is actually a short response time from money influx to hiring. Even when the money comes in, hiring is a long-term financial commitment, so there are layers and layers of analysis that must be undertaken to make such a shift in departmental budgets, then of course the whole hiring process.

This is all weak. If you want hardcore: Cannibalism and no loot at all except one knife.

... attachments? Like bionic horse legs or a hollow torso? Seriously though, horses are pretty complicated, which is why they won't be the first. You have to sync up the animations more, deal with some AI, proper movement, health, and death.

[Discussion] What is needed to make hardcore, properly hardcore?
Valadain replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
If you die on Hardcore, you die forever and can only then play regular. That would be hardcore. -
Long range rifles (sniper rifles) balance themselves. They are great in very particular situations, but easy to combat. You should know where the snipers will be and can either avoid their line of sight or sneak up behind them. I'm fine with holding off on them until there is a more realistic challenge to shooting long range, but there is absolutely no reason they shouldn't be in the game. As for the OP, that would be fine, but I really don't find it necessary nor would it be realistic. Long range rifles are not military only. Any military rifle you can name, is either available for civilians or a very close approximation is available.
-
Yeah, that is annoying. If you've watched the Morgan Freeman videos on youtube, you can see how people respond to others trying to mess around and bring some humor to the game. Basically, torture and death. But I suspect that will die down a bit after more features come in and other games come out. It won't die out entirely, so you'll either need to incorporate the death into your planning or get some people involved that are armed to deter would-be killers.

First, I do empathize with you, so please don't take this harshly as it isn't intended. Why are you on the road? Why are you getting caught? Why aren't you assessing your surroundings and checking for dangers before you run into town? Why are you going to Elektro with no protection rather than any number of smaller areas to get a good fighting chance before you head to a dangerous place? If you are getting jumped at your spawn point, I definitely feel for you, that sucks. I think something should be done about that. There is no fighting chance there. If you've gotten away from your spawn point though, you can't just leisurely stroll around. You need to watch out for yourself.

Swapping item Mechanic needs one last Tweak
Valadain replied to ChickenMan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
That's quite a bit more complicated than just stopping you for a minute and as people have mentioned, the hot bar would be a good way to work around that for things that are placed specifically to be grabbed out quickly. -
Dead people don't carry guns. Live people can only carry so much. This is another example of making false realism. If you want something, it is ok to say you want it without pretending it is realistic. Cars for example, I see the usefulness of making them broken even though they would realistically be sitting around in perfect working condition.

is there a way to switch b/w two rifles without dropping one?
Valadain replied to bioned's topic in General Discussion
Which is why I carry the magnum. If I have to make a choice, absolutely dropping the shotgun. Really only have it for testing it out. Since half the crap I find doesn't have a use yet, I can spare the room. -

I would say yes, unless you are pulling it out of your backpack. -

The sawed off shotgun is basically a pistol, not a rifle. -
Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game
Valadain replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
Running and zombies makes sense honestly. Unless you are getting them around alone, I wouldn't be running into a group of them with a damn axe or a sharpened stick. Not in a world where a flesh wound might turn septic and kill you. Honestly, I'd be setting up traps, popping a few to get them following, then lead them to their death. From as big of a distance as I can. I wouldn't be slapping them with boat oars or trying to perfectly chuck a knife at them, knowing it was more likely to bounce off their skull than do any harm. I doubt I'd be axing them in the head either, as the skull is a pretty thick bone, so the wear an tear plus potential difficulty of popping the axe back out to fend off the others would be tricky. The only reason melee in an FPS is a good solution for zombies is because it is wonky as hell and pretty much works like a free and silent bullet. Not for any sense of "realism". -
Can ONLY hold weapons in hand unless you find or craft a sling.
Valadain replied to combatcomm1's topic in Suggestions
Don't much care as a lot of rifles would realistically be found with slings on them already. It makes sense for the axe if you don't have a backpack, but you could find a way to attach it to the backpack. Honestly, the better solve for melee is to make smaller melee weapons more useful for zombies and then you don't have to have people running around with big axes on their back. They don't have to make them as effective for me to use them and at that point, they could even make the axe take up the primary slot, so you can't reasonably lug around a giant axe and a rifle at the same time. Add a hatchet that can be slung at the waist to use instead. I would actually rather see some better strategies for taking out zombies than melee anyway. Like putting out some traps and fresh meat for bait.
