This game is and always will be way too military focused by players
pillock replied to billyangstadt's topic in General Discussion
It's not the amount of loot, it's the balance. They should turn off the tap (pull the plug?) on gun ammo and food spawns, and give those slots to crafting gear instead. And enable us to sharpen sticks with an axe ffs. -
I'm not sure the persistence-enabled stable servers are respawning loot. Or maybe there is a different respawn system, or something? The towns I've been to in persistent servers have been picked clean of useful items, leaving just the odd bit of food and a few pipe wrenches, builders helmets, etc.

I think they could probably halve the amount of ammo in the current balance of spawns and there'd still be plenty about for people to go around gunfighting. Herein lies the problem. Before my HC character got reset yesterday, I'd played that life for maybe 4-5 hours in total. I'd been playing at a slow pace, looting small towns very thoroughly and walking as a general rule. My backpack was full of ammo of various types: about 200 9mm rounds, 40-odd shotgun shells, 70-odd Mosin rounds, about 50 SKS rounds, about 140 .22 rounds and maybe 15 magnum rounds; I'd only found about 2 or 3 guns in that same time. What I was really looking for was survival gear - but in that time I had only found 1 length of rope, 1 box of 19 matches, no knife yet, no binoculars, no battery for my walkie-talkie (foolishly chucked my free starter one!). I know loot balance is not really a priority yet, but I think they could make some crude adjustments to drastically reduce the amount of ammo while increasing the amount of 'everyday' stuff, especially in civi areas. -
What we really need is a brand new map to go live when DayZ hits full release. I'm sure they're beavering away behind the scenes on it as we speak... maybe.

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
pillock replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
I've been 1 hit my a zombie. Once. I was healthy/energised/hydrated. It was a few patches ago, mind. It was definitely the zombie that killed me. I was in a windowless corridor, heard the zombie growl as it glitched through the wall, looked round and it was in my face. Then WHACK, I was dead. I don't disbelieve that it could happen in this patch as well. -
My hardcore character has been alive since October 1475, but I don;t care about the regular one - I kill him every few weeks just because I want to. This is because I'm really fucking cool.

The amount of damage they do to your gear is a bit stupid compared to the damage they do to your character (ie. your character gets away with a bit of bleeding, but is patched up and back to healthy after a few minutes, while ALL the gear in your coat/jacket is completely ruined forever). The best way around this is not to let the bastards hit you. If you're not confident about avoiding hits in melee, use bullets. -
Wait. I tried to stash a backpack under a pine tree earlier, but it vanished. Are you saying if I go back to that server and chop the tree down, I might get my backpack back?
-
I set my filter to search "persistence" in the server name and came up with 1 (one! only!) 1PP server that wasn't password locked. It was full, obviously. I did get on it after a few minutes of spamming the Connect button, but then it resest after about half an hour and my character got reset. Bah!
-
When this first happened to me on 3PP view and my guy just face-planted into the floor, I thought I'd just drunk a canteen full of bleach or something. Scared the shit out of me til I realised I could get up again.
-
I really don't know, but I'd expect things to degrade according to their material further down the development line. This being the first implementation of persistent items and storage, I doubt it's as advanced as that yet. Also, what classifies something as a "container"? Is it just tents? Tents and backpacks? Protector cases? Ammo boxes? If an item of clothing has inventory slots, is that a container, too? Is a boonie hat a "container", because it can carry a fishing hook?

Describe Your Playstyle In 5 Words Or Less
pillock replied to Karmaterror's topic in General Discussion
Has nobody else noticed that the title of this thread should be "...5 words or fewer"? I blame the schools. -
I get the impression that is correct. Maybe not foreverandeveramen, but long enough to be useful. I am going to test it out, anyhow.
-
Damn your impudence. You know what I mean.
-
Tell you what would be damn useful: being able to carry a backpack in your hands.

I don't think you're looking at this the right way up. Both murder and rape are unacceptable in the real world - that's obvious. Shooting other players in a computer game is ok - it's become acceptable, though there are some people who still dislike and are uncomfortable with it. Rape is not ok in a game, because there's no point in it - there's no gameplay value to be had from it. Competitive shoot-em-ups are fun. "Killing" an opponent in a game might be morally dubious, but it does not affect anyone's real-life health - to be killed is simply to lose the competition, start again and have another go. I think that's why it's ok. But rape doesn't have any purpose in a computer game - it doesn't add anything fun, it doesn't give it a competitive edge. It's just horrible and demeaning. There's a world of difference between the two. Anyway, rape is NOT a deliberate feature of DayZ and it never will be. If anyone in the press thinks that it is, then they are just plain wrong. As for GTA, it isn't the developers' fault that some arseholes have modded the game that way.
-
I think DayZ needs to be able to defend itself against these kinds of allegations. And that probably means a system of reporting and banning abusive players. In the UK it is a criminal offence to verbally abuse someone on the grounds of sexism, racism or religious intolerance. There have been successful lawsuits against these types of abuse in the context of Facebook and Twitter. If that type of behaviour was displayed on this forum, for example, the very least you would expect is a ban. DayZ Standalone needs that kind of mechanism, otherwise it will bring itself in for negative attention from the mainstream media, which would be unnecessary, because it's avoidable. Rape and torture is not a gameplay feature - it's just something that players can crudely simulate by manipulating other mechanics that are intended for legitimate gameplay purposes - that's not something I think can be easily avoided. But verbal abuse over VOIP probably does need to be policed in some way - other games do it, and not without good reason. At this early stage of development it's understandable that such mechanisms aren't in place yet, but perhaps they should be given more urgent attention?
-
Where are they though? I haven't seen binocs spawn since .45
-
Any multiplayer game that has: 1) VOIP; and 2) character poses such crouching and lying down will be subject to these functions being exploited by irresponsible (for want of a better word) members of its playerbase. I don't think there is any way around it. There is always the option to exit the game if you are uncomfortable with what another player is doing around you; perhaps voice comms should be cut when you die, as well? Simulated sexual violence is not on, in any context or for any reason, and neither is racism or bigotry - players shouldn't have to put up with that sort of shit when they're trying to enjoy themselves, and perhaps there could be some kind of reporting mechanism introduced somewhere down the line?
-
Has anyone seen binoculars recently?

The only reason to ever read The Telegraph is to deliberately make yourself annoyed by the bullshit in the Editorial and Opinion sections.

Why...........(movement and avatar control)

Heh. Haha. Hahahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! -
No. Way. Inland spawns are WRONG, goddamnit. Spawning in Polana and Dolina is bad enough - I hope it's removed ASAP. It's got to be the coast or I'll have a tantrum.

Hey man! Don't shoot! ...... awwww. -
"Increase item spawn rarity" means "make item rarer". Is this what you actually mean? Confused by Q1
