You can get a wood pile from thin air so long as it is air in the forest. When in a forest, right click the hatchet and select "gather wood." You need two inventory spaces available. -

Use your secondary for zombies, but since the weapon nerf, you'll need headshots. If you want a primary for zombies, you'll pretty much need a silenced M4 or Bizon; anything else will ring like a dinner bell to them. -
