Everyone plays the game the way they want, so...
BlinkingRiki182 replied to NomadZ's topic in General Discussion
I was curious what the devs would say about that so I contacted them. Combat logging isn't an exploit according to SMoss. I think we can safely say you've lost the argument. -

Are you seriously telling me that because the devs say that whoever combat logs is a pussy it makes combat logging an exploit? If this proves something, it is that combat logging is seen as a cowardly act (and not as an exploit). And yes, combat logging might be wrong for other reasons but in terms of software behavior there's nothing wrong with it, and let me stress that again - for now because we are in alpha. The devs will probably deal with this later on (because there's a better way to handle it) but for now (and for the hundredth time) this is the intentional behavior of the software. -

First of all, you assume that there is no better system to deal with combat logging just because you can't come up with one (or you haven't seen anyone come up with one). And second, even if this is the best possible way to deal with combat logging, that doesn't make combat logging an exploit. I'm going to say it one more time, maybe you will think about it a bit more: in case they decide not to rework the current logout mechanic (because the current implementation is the best possible solution), then this will be the intended behavior of the software and you would have to deal with it (a.k.a "not an exploit to log out when hostile players are around, we just implemented the best solution possible"). -

So what's your point? That they can't fix it in any other way or what? I explained to you why combat logging isn't an exploit. Instead of addressing that you are now demanding that I come up with a fix that will solve combat logging so that you can nitpick that afterwards... that's just cheap. -

There are many ways, yes. And this is not the mod, this is the standalone and there are many more possible ways in which the issue can be addressed when you have the possibility to modify the engine and aren't strictly in the script realm. Use your imagination. And what you described as my logic is not my logic at all. See, the difference is that in the case of duping, the devs have tried everything they could to prevent it but they missed something in the workflow and have to return to the code and fix it again until it works as intended (no duping possible). In the case of combat logging, the devs are perfectly aware that their fix will work in exactly the way it does in the game. Do you think they didn't notice that players can log out in the midst of combat? They know and they intend to leave it like this for now, probably until beta phase. So I don't think we can talk about combat logging being an exploit right now. And I'm not talking about right or wrong here, I'm just saying that combat logging isn't an exploit. -

First, let me stress that again: The game is currently in ALPHA, that means that ANYTHING that is as insignificant as this can wait for BETA to be ironed out even if it is considered as unintended behavior (and it currently isn't, see below). If you knew anything about software development you would've known this. Second - the devs already addressed this issue by implementing the 30 seconds rule. The problem for you is that this is not the fix you want. You want a more severe consequences for people that log out in the heat of battle (understandable) so you somehow ASSUME, that the 30 seconds rule isn't enough and is not the proper way to fix the issue. Just because you are not satisfied with the devs way to fix the issue, doesn't mean that the devs are going to change the behavior. Guess what, it's not you who decides how the software should work. It's the DEVS decision and if they have implemented 30 seconds timer as a way to fix the issue then that is their FIX and the issue is FIXED (in the current state of the game). Do you think that they have implemented this from thin air? No, this is all described in something called an Use Case, where the functionality of the whole software is explained in detail. Hence this is the intended log out mechanics (for now), hence it's not an exploit to LOG OUT even if there are hostile people around (for now). If the devs decide to change this behavior (because of any reason), then they will change the log out mechanic, change the use case and if there's still a way in which people are able to log-out in the old manner (current implementation) that will then be AN EXPLOIT. -

You don't understand the basics of QA. I've rebutted all of your "arguments", I explained to you why combat logging isn't an exploit and all you do is quote the definition of the meaning of "exploit", which, in your eyes, somehow proves me wrong? Come on mate, I'm sure you can do better than that :) Why don't you address the points that I made? That would be a good start. -

I'm pretty satisfied with my career so far, thank you for your concerns. As a matter of fact, you might want to check this article on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect . It describes your attitude perfectly. -

I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about as I'm doing this for a living. But be my guest, fuel your own delusions. -

No, it will be closed because it is not an exploit - simple. The day they put those 30 seconds time after log out, they were essentially telling you "That is our fix regarding combat loggers". Maybe it will change down the road but for now, this is the intentional behavior of the software. What were you saying about IQs? -

BlinkingRiki182 replied to NomadZ's topic in General Discussion
Uh oh, the butthurt is strong with that one. Combat logging isn't classified as an exploit. Why? Because it isn't an exploit, it's the intended behavior of the software. In other words, combat logging isn't a bug and if you go and create an issue for it in the DayZ bugtracker, it will be closed with the remark "intended behavior", won't fix. Maybe I didn't make it clear enough in my first post that I was talking about software behavior but I pretty much assumed people will understand that, maybe partly because I'm working as a full time software tester and I use this terminology daily, kinda makes you forget not everyone uses those terms like that. Anyway, if you can't understand the obvious difference between combat logging and duping after such an explanation, I'm afraid talking to you is as productive as talking to a wall. Bottom line - combat logging is here ONLY because the devs decided that the current logout mechanic is OK (for now, as we are in alpha, yes?). Period. If it's morally right to do it is a completely different topic (in my original post I asked if someone really compare duping with combat logging, not if it's morally right to combat log), the fact is that combat logging and duping are NOT comparable in technical terms and hence combat logging can't be seen as exploiting a bug. -

BlinkingRiki182 replied to NomadZ's topic in General Discussion
Actually, it's not my problem that you cannot distinguish between a bug in the game and a behavior that is, from developers perspective, intentional. And I'm talking about software behavior here, not player behavior. Players decide when to quit the game and the developers, taking into account your concerns, implemented the 30 seconds rule you mentioned. But they didn't do anything else, which means that they think what we currently have is enough. On the other hand, duping is seen as a major bug that needs to be fixed asap because it is game braking. Do you see the difference now or do you wish to remain in lala land? -

Oh they are pretty different bro. Duping is NOT an intended behavior, while combat logging is an intended behavior as the devs implemented it that way. There are many ways in which the devs can prevent combat loggingl, not only by increasing the timer but apparently they either have too much work right now or don't think that combat logging is such a big deal. To me it isn't. Apparently it is to you though. -

Did you just compare duping with combat logging? -
Yesterday I logged in on a 40/50 server and found 2 normal tents and one military tent for 15 minutes in Chernogorsk. Anyone else?
-
I just found out by another poster that persistence for tents is switched off. Maybe that's why they are so abundant.

TIL the only trustworthy people in DayZ are nine year olds.
BlinkingRiki182 replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
Normal people are hard to find these days bro. I have more then 600 hours of DayZ and I still try to communicate with people and not kill them. Especially people that have helped me. -
Not very good. Unless you become a test manager. In Germany, where I work as a tester, the salary for QA starts at around 36 000 EUR (in comparison, a junior programmer starts at around 45 000 EUR).

You don't need a container if it rains.

I've been playing yesterday on some servers and it seems that the toilet loot explosion thing is back? A few days ago all the toilets were empty, now it seems that they spawn loot again? Also seems that the "tents are everywhere" trend is back too.

Hello, Truck unstuck master here. I have unstuck countless of trucks by using what I like to call "the fireplace method". If you have your truck stuck on a tree or any other obstacle, craft a fireplace and start moving it until it reaches the point where the tires or chassis is stuck (you can move it by opening up the inventory and dragging the fire outside the inventory box, you need practice and you'll be able to move it in the desired direction). Once the fireplace is near the stuck part, you need to try to move the fireplace underneath it. Sometimes, the truck will bounce on its own when the fireplace is underneath. Other times you'll need to get in, start the engine and try to move it. Your goal should be to make the truck bounce hight enough to overcome the obstacle on which it's stuck. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, other times it takes a good 1 hour. Best results are achieved if there are 2 people, one driving the truck (trying to move it) and the other one trying to get the fireplace underneath the truck.

We found a military tent laying around one of those scrapped road-side military trucks near "Novaya Petrovka". It's really cool but we had to sacrifice one of our backpacks to carry it somewhere safe as you can't transport it in your hands like the normal tents. -

I haven't noticed many guns spawning in one place. I found just 2 or 3 rifles for several hours of play. But I've read other posts in the forum of guns cluster-spawning like that so it must be true. This should be fixed of course. But I like the cozy feeling of having a secret base to stash my stuff :) And it would be cool to have more tents so you can run into other people's bases more often. -

I was playing exactly on the vilayer servers. It's actually pretty cool to have the loot system like that. Tents give the game more depth :)
