Things I immediately noticed about today's release...

Sorry about that. What position kind of position were you using for shooting? A bench rest?

EDIT: ( 8/8 quote above is not pilgrim's, but foxdie_01's, I messed up while originally editing this post) Try shooting in real life... JFK... people, humans are not terminators. It's pretty hard to eliminate sway unless you are using a bench-rest. And with 12-15x zoom, sway is pretty much inevitable.

That's 1) a really small knife 2) not 'in the boot' but on the boot. On it's outside, in a special pouch.

I'd love to see someone running with a knife in their boots... ^_^

    Cannibalism

This is complete and utter bullshit. There is no such effect. People can eat human meat and be perfectly fine. In fact, folk beliefs run into the opposite direction. A common belief among tribals was that eating other people gave you their strength and vitality.. There's even a funny statue in Tarabuco, Bolivia, commemorating a past victory of natives over the Spanish. Yep. That guy has taken a bite out of the heart of his fallen enemy..

    Cannibalism

You've actually got it completely backwards, padre. Humans practiced cannibalism in the past. And because of that, we're somewhat resistant to it. Unlike cows - which contracted BSE more easily after being fed foodstuffs containing prions. There were at least ~200K cases of BSE in Britain, and so far, 166 deaths due to vCJD.. and that's after people ate tainted meat for years. Furthermore, it seems some more cannibalism (mortuary in this case) has led to development of almost complete immunity to prion diseases in a certain Papuan tribe..

    Lost In The Wilderness

I seriously don't get how someone can get lost in DayZ. Unless they have on leg shorter than the other and keep running in circles*.. There's the edge of the map. You hit it, travel in the opposite direction. It's impossible to not find towns that way.. Chernarus was a densely populated area. *interesting to note than in real-life, if you tell people to walk straight and they can't orient themselves according to a compass or the sun, they'll tend to walk in a circle..

any point in having a sidearm?

So what about 1 feet off the target? Because everyone except the dude who has spent months of his life blasting away on the range is going to be a bad shot with a pistol. Is there some sort of background info specifying survivors are all pro-shooters or cyborgs or whatever? No. IMO, accuracy with pistols ought to be crap, on account of sway. Not rng based, but just sway. So unless someone shoots from a supported position, they'll be unable to hit say better than torso-sized targets @ 15 m reliably with rapid fire. I've been instructed how to use pistols, and also shot them in the past, and I can't really do better with 9 mm pistols. Which is.. well, pretty uncommon for someone in a post-communist country. Only 1% of people ever bother to get a weapon permit. Maybe.. 1/10 th of those shoot handguns competitively. Perhaps RPG-like stats ought to be implemented. People would pick skills they want, and if someone wanted to shoot pistols, (which are supremely impractical* weapons in real life) like Jerry Miculek they could put all their points into pistol marksmanship and skimp on health, medical, endurance... mechanical, etc.. *anyone who expects a fight carries a long gun. A pistol is only used by those people who aren't expecting a fight and for whom carrying a rifle would be impractical - like everyone in a civilized society.

any point in having a sidearm?

Pistols are notoriously difficult to fire accurately. There've been plenty of cases of people blazing away with guns at a distance of a couple of meters and completely missing their intended targets. Also.. what dispersion is there now? Amphibia delivers headshots at 20-30m quite reliably. This ought to be toned down.. as it makes no sense that every survivor is a top-notch marksman. IMO, DayZ needs rpg-like statistics you would choose while spawning and which would improve with use. It'd allow people to choose what they're good at, give extra reasons for cooperation and so on.

    MP5K - Just Bad Luck

Red Orchestra 2 has 64 player servers that work pretty well. It uses client-side hit detection though. I wonder if something like DayZ could be implemented in Unreal Engine. UE3 has maximum sized maps of 10x10x10 kilometers, but I've never heard of anyone running a map that big.

    Sporter 22 Mags loot

It's not 'effective range' if you can shoot like that only on the range. Can you even set a normal scope to compensate for the drop?
  12. Cullis

    Sporter 22 Mags loot

Dude. You know what the balistics of .22 are like?
  13. Dude. Check out your FPS meter when you're not connected to any server. In the menu. It generally shows the same number as in the server. Server performance has nothing. nothing to do with what FPS you see in game. Why should it? The server just tells you where the objects are. It has nothing to do with displaying stuff.

    Sporter 22 Mags loot

MP-5 is a police, not a military weapon. There is no reason for it to spawn in military areas. On the other hand, it should be found in police stations and the like. Not really. Remeber that Chernarus is a country which has or had compulsory military service, so .. probably 1 assault rifle per 3 people somewhere in storage. Czech Republic, after which Chernarus was modelled. So the most common weapon, by rights, should be whatever was in use by the army when they ended compulsory military service.Optics ought to be very, very uncommon. What do you want optics for anyway? Simo Hayha shot 500 Soviets with nothing more than a Mosin..

Has the Mosin 9130 been nerfed?

Then why did I get one-shotted last weekend in the ATC tower in Balota? Server was nearly empty, and it was really far from Berezino, so I thought I needn't creep around. Boom. You're dead. And I had pretty much a full inventory, coat, vest, very little space left.

    A snipers life for me

This game has pretty crap weapon modelling. A random* 70 years old Mosin found.. somewhere, firing the basic machinegun ammo isn't going to provide better accuracy than 2-3 minutes of arc, which translates to 3" dispersion at 100 yards... and almost two feet at 700 meters. *it's not the sniper variant, because that one comes with a PU scope. Mosins are not bad rifles, but they are neither really good, and unless someone is real lucky and gets one with a great barrel, not particularily accurate.. Poor safety design, unsafe bolt design (if the case ruptures, and you're not wearing safety glasses, say goodbye to your eyeball) ..etc.
  17. Cullis

Has the Mosin 9130 been nerfed?

What's this crap? Clothes.. stopping .30 rifle rounds? That requires heavy ceramic or metal armor plates. (sigh)
  18. Helicopters in a post-apocalyptic environment are a majorly fukken stupid idea. They're the most maintenance-heavy type of aircraft. On average, a helicopter needs four hours of maintenance per each hour of flight. Furthermore, they burn an ungodly amount of gasoline. Furthermore, helicopters being slow-moving are vulnerable to small-arms fire. Also, they generally use automatic weapons, for which ammunition would be very, very scarce. Which, again, is not being made anymore in a post-apocalyptic environment. Gasoline also degrades within one to two years... All in all, why not put in ultralights? For reconnaissance and crap? Or motorbikes?
  19. Weird thing happened to me two days ago. Found a guy on the top of the police station in Komarovo. I don't think he was up to any good, as right before I shot a corpse in the same police station and now he was scanning the town. He had an AKM I think, a rifle with a sickle shaped mag, cowboy hat - no helmet. He wasn't aware of me, so I took careful aim at the back of his head with the FNX. Shot once, twice, five times, from 4m or so. Nothing. I didn't even see any blood. He turns around, shoots me dead.
  20. Fun game, even though it's complete non-fun really. Hmm, let's sum it up. Spawned at Solnichny, drank some water, was chasd to the first hamlet west of it. Then walked west some more, found an axe at farm building east of Dolina. Then cleaned out Dolina, got wounded by zombies. Managed to lose my t-shirt. Found another on a corpse of a dead girl standing - standing corpse with a zombie next to it.Weird. Found some food there, found big backpack at factory north of Dolina, went to Polana, killed some zombies, then was wounded. Logged out, logged in. Yep, still bleeding somewhat. Logged out, asked the nice people at Reddit for a bandage. Great guys, they took 15 minutes, came to Polana. I logged in, but somehow I managed to die in the meantime. :_____:: Next life. I spawn at Kamyshevo, find a baseball bat. Along the way I find a guy who had no items on him, who broke his legs. He asks me to kill him, so I comply. Next I get to Elektro. Kill a zombie on the beach, get scratched, bandage myself., but it took me about a minute. I loot the northern firehouse. Nothing much. Then I come out of the back - a dead guy, with magnum, fireaxe, some nice boots & gloves. I explore elektro, find a medkit. A medkit! I switch to a sparsely populated server, hoping to find more loot in the same houses. I know, it's a bit cheezy but I was really missing a backpack. So, I meet one guy. He has an axe, but he runs away. With hindsight, I can't say I blame him. Inside the other firehouse, there's a guy with an axe. I move away, 10m, put away my axe. I ask him to put his axe away , he asks whether I killed his friend. I tell him no, I just got to this server. Then he gets a little nearer, I'm thinking, he can't hear me, right? The voice talk volume attenuates with distance. He gets within 3ms, then lunges at me and hits me with the fireaxe. "You are dead". Uh, okay. Now I understand why people run away from other players. I think I'll do the same from now on. Also, how could've I've been so thick. Damn. And I had a medkit :-( __________________ Next life. I spawn at.. not sure. Probably Elektrozavodsk, judging by t he shape of the pier. But somehow there was a big panel block right near to it. Anyway, I run towards it. Find some zombies. Turn away. Then I hear shots from behind. A guy takes out some of them. Okay, so I approach him. He has lots of kit, gas mask, etc doesn't have a gun out. There's a zombie nearby (15m). I tell him, hey, you gotta take that one out, what if it attacks. So he goes and disposes of it. Then he comes back, says something. Can't remember what. Then he takes out a pistol and shoots me twice, saying, in his most menacing reedy teenager voice 'I'm at war with your mother'. "You are dead". ______________ Sociopath simulator indeed. __________________ Next time, I spawn east of Msta. I headed west, found backpack, compass, helmet and canteen. I even have rags. But no weapon, nowhere. I guess I'll be heading towards the airfield, and kit out there. But what then? Also, if someone doesn't want to put away his weapon, fukken run or whack him.I guess. I'll probably try to kit out and play medic a little.
  21. Weirdest thing today. I went through Dubky, Novoselky and Chapaetsk, tussling with zombies and scavenging. Found an M4 and later some ammo for it and even a sawed off at a police station. Then I went to check out the hospital, thinking, I'll grab some meds and then I'm set, survival wise. On the roof, my controls get stuck and the character keeps strafing right. This has happened to me once or twice, but third time was the charm - and I fell off the roof. I respawn near Kamyshevo, thinking.. I'll run back and get my stuff, it's a pretty infrequented area. So I take 20 minutes running back, only pausing to drink and such. At present, it seems to me the characters run about as quickly as I can bike comfortably, ~30 kph :D I get back to the same place. I'm crestfallen - my gear is nowhere. Then I remember there's a 10 minute decay time? Anyway, in the meantime I've found a backpack and a fireaxe, so I'm not that bad off. start exploring the buildings a little. First ?school? building I find, there's a dead guy on first floor with lots of nice gear, including fully kitted M4, a revolver, pistol, ammo and lots of food. There was a bleeding zombie on a lower floor. In that funny position where it can't be harmed. I just frantically stripped him of his stuff, put it on and then gtfo. I guess I can be lucky at times.. but I'm still mystified how he managed to croak? WTF? Maybe I've stumbled into a fight where the other party was somewhere upstairs, or two guys managed to kill each other out. That went through my mind, but as that guy had enough for me, I was not willing to risk exploring the situation further and there was no point in that anyway.

Enemies spotting me in the bushes

Yes, there is. 1) Disable the option to turn the foliage off.
  23. Cullis

New backpack! And it's fabulous ;-)

SKS is kinda innaccurate-- not good beyond 300m anyway.

Doors - randomly open / closed on server reset

Ya think in the event of a zombie apocalypse, everyone would have made sure to close all doors before expiring, getting eaten or bugging out?
