My screens crap so i usually have brightness up quite a bit. I also did have gamma sided up but not too high since it gets grainy otherwise. I honestly couldn't see very far even with it like that and since I didn't think a black screen would be very interesting I upped the brightness and contrast in post some more. I'd like to note that the first slip was right when the sun had set enough for things to go gray. It was still fairly well lit. Also I have to say that changing your gamma and brightness to be higher is perfectly acceptable. In real life your eyes can adjust over time. The amount of darkness in the game is excessive and I hope that when they're done working with the lighting design they can give night play a much nicer feel. The devs haven't payed night much heed to nighttime yet. Plus if I have my gamma/brightness higher at night I leave it that high at daytime too. Partly because I can't be bothered to switch it.

Someone should set up a server that's actually night time all the time and we could all flock to it.
-
How do you manage to find a server with that many people on it? I usually go on the US servers (experimental) and things only stay dark for a short time. Then the server resets.

I'm honestly tired of everyone else having guns. It doesn't ever end well for me. I surrender. I get shot. I run away. I get shot. I say I'm friendly. I get shot. I'm running from zombies. I get shot. I wave at them. I get shot. I bandage them. I get shot, I'm looking for food. I get shot. I calmly ask "hey please don't shoot me." I still get shot. Every time i interact with someone for more than 4 sentences I seem to get shot. I don't really blame any of them. None of them are obligated to listen to my pleas of "at least leave me unconscious but alive." But still, it would have been nice to not fear being murdered every time I try and find food. I would have shared with them if they asked. But they didn't. They just shot me. Multiple times. All the time. Well I've decided enough is enough. I've had a fully kitted character on Hardcore mode just waiting to see some action. I only really use him when playing with friends anyway. I'm going down to Balota/Cherno with more Mosin rounds than will fit in an ammo box and I'm going to set up a dead zone. If I see anyone on my server with a gun walking around I'm going to blow their head off. No warning, no nothing. Just that same black screen I've had to sigh at for the past couple weeks. It's time to balance things out a bit. If anyone is traveling in that area please conceal your weapons if you want to avoid a rifle round to the face.

Here, this is the clearest example of this happening I've seen (for anyone whose still doubting.) Just watch the video from 23:50 onward.

I Love a Good Game of Inventory Tetris But It Is Missing One Thing

That's not the point of having an open alpha like this. You need to offer constructive criticism and talk about what you want to see in the game. -
Check out my fiarly simple tutorial and tell me what you think. I hope it can help you guys out. It's aimed at players who are just now running the game and covers most of the basics in an easy and not very flashy "just watch me do it" kind of way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A652PnOj6s&feature=youtu.be

Thanks. I mostly made this because when I was starting out I was more or less lost when trying to get the hang of things most guides didn't explain the basic controls and focused more on the nuances of the game rather than mechanics. I couldn't pick out the right buildings and had to do a lot of learning on my feet. I'm glad I did. It was really fun that way. But I felt like the help I was looking for wasn't there. If I can I'd like to help everyone I can because its a better way to pass time in this game than running around shooting people.

This makes a bit of sense and I think it's worth keeping logged somewhere on a tips thread.

So Day Z is likely to have a lot of cool features in the future. I've sat back and read a lot of threads about what you guys have been suggesting and I've also been watching a lot of what Rocket's been saying. I'm hoping to get a decent discussion going about some things that may be on their way and some things that are often brought up as subject to change. I'm just going to put my opinions in a 20-item list here. What do you all think? My personal opinions on a few topics: 1. Adding sleeping to the game - This is a bad idea. If i'm not playing then I shouldn't use up server resources. 2. Base Building - This sounds really solid so far. It would be somewhat disappointing if my base was only logged via specific servers though. 3. Getting knocked unconscious - I honestly really like the way this works right now. 4. Humanity Systems - In real life I can't tell whose a good guy or bad guy. You can say people can have a gut feeling but even then the way a humanity system would work would need to be fairly complex. How do you determine if a person had to kill for self defense or not? If there was some way to tell who was good/bad I'd want it to be a very slight change that could be overlooked if you weren't looking for it. Like a facial expression or a slight change in coloration of things or something. If your character scowled it would give bandits more reason to wear masks which could add an interesting dynamic. 5. Zombies - They walk through walls and are completely non-threatening right now. I want to fear them and I want my bullets not to feel like their wasted if I fire them into them. 6. Stamina Systems - This should not be employed until the game has vehicles and re-spawning loot. If there is a stamina system used then it should be based around carry weight. This would give some incentive to packing light. 7. Making Specific Items Very Rare - I both hate and love this idea. I feel like many people would waste too much time trying to get a specific fabled item. Plus if you were one of the 100 people in the whole world with night vision goggles then everyone would want to kill you for them. 8. Trains - I really want to see someone repair an old train someday. It would be hilarious to see people run over by one. 9. Melee Combat - Needs some work but its definitely on the way there. 10. Ranged Combat - Most weapons need a bit more polishing in the way they work and feel but so far this is my favorite part of the game play. It's very satisfying to shoot zombies. 11. Anonymity - This needs to stay a part of the game. If you're not told their name then you don't know it. That's how it should be. 12. Rewards For Surviving A Long Time - Beards. We need to grow beards. 13. Skills - This is a touchy subject for me at least. You should get minutely better at things as you do them. But this should be done subtlety and only change things like speeds or percentages. Ex: the more you reload the faster at reloading you get. Very slowly until its about half the time it would take usually, Then it just stops improving. 14. Suicide - Yes. This could be really hilariously used as well as provide a dramatic element for those RP-ers our there. There should be something about your body that makes it obvious that that is how you died. 15. Vehicles - Please let there be lots of broken ones and a few working ones. Then certain factories can spawn parts and the broken ones can be repaired and used for a while. 16. Sound Design - This seems to be going in the right direction, but obviously still needs work. I feel like music should be added to the game but it needs to stay easy to turn off. 17. Certain Settings Being Unchangeable - Also a touchy subject. While it may be unfair to weaker computers I do feel that certain settings like shadows and grass amounts should be the same across the board. There's little to no point in trying to be stealthy without that. 18. Crowbars/Axes To Open Doors - This sounds really cool. It should make a different amount of noise depending on what is used to open them and what kind of door it is. Car doors should be noisy almost always and if you have to use an axe to chop down a door it should be pretty loud. 19. Hunting - This sounds like a good idea so far. But it wouldn't make sense to implement before cooking. 20. Weather - I really hope this affects characters physically. This should be made server-side for sure and would give players a reason to get rain resistant or warm clothing. Of course the game needs a lot of work but I thought this list was a good starting point for discussion. I feel like this game needs to make player interaction close to life-like. No obvious ways to tell whose who and whatnot. Immersion is really important to me. If there were to be an easier to play less immersive version of the game then I would want it to be an optional version that I didn't have to play on. I feel like this game needs to be rather difficult to play and fairly in depth. If I wanted to play a regular FPS game I would. I play Day Z because it's unlike any game I've ever encountered before. I get a real sense of adventure when i'm out and about. Every interaction with people makes my heart race a bit. I'm just so in love with this game and I really don't want to see people try and transform it into the same generic crap that every other game out there equates to. P.S. The log out timers really bug me still. They help with combat logging mildly I think. That's nice and all. But they're not a full-proof fix and I really hope the timers get the attention they need to stop being so bothersome to the average player. They don't really do anything to stop server hoppers. Sometimes I register pings weird and a server I think will be fine will have a really bad connection to me and I'll need to switch a few times until I find one that's less trouble. That takes about 3x as long to do now with the new timers.

I honestly think that PvP in general is a major part of the game, Right now there isn't much to do other than that. When there is more to run around and accomplish people will likely opt in for teamwork or peaceful interactions. But if this game wasn't so aggressive there wouldn't be that fear element when talking to people and it just wouldn't be as fun. There needs to be a chance that every time you talk to someone it could be a fight. KOS may not be nice but it keeps you on your toes and without it this game would be more of a walking and slowly dying simulator than a fun experience.

So I'm on the experimental servers right now and I don't know what to do about getting stuffed. I accidentally drunk a bit too much water and have been slowly jogging/walking everywhere to avoid puking. I seem to throw up all my food when my character sprints while stuffed. The notice just won't go away and I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Is it a glitch or just a matter of waiting even longer?

So whose able to go out and record this C1 thing? Someone tell me what goes down afterwords. -
I prefer to talk to people in game frequently. If they don't seem hostile immediately I usually'l approach people. Expecting that maybe they would also be bored with out some other player coming by. After you get food and water covered you don't have anything much left other than interacting with other players to do.

Looking for people interested in making a DayZ shortfilm
Erikp3 replied to rydekk's topic in General Discussion
I am a big short film making kinda guy. I can do a lot of editing fairly well. I've got sound effects stock footage etc. I'd be happy to help you out if needed. I'm not sure if my voice is really worth a damn though. -

This is about an hour of playing on the experimental servers. I figured it might be interesting to see for anyone who hasn't or isn't able to play on them. New things at some point seen in this video: (No particular order) 1. Hydrated Notice 2. Child's Backpacks 3. Down Jackets 4. Writing On Paper Fixed 5. Re-spawning Working 6. Spray Paint Working 7. Zombies Fighting Each Other 8. Spawning Hungry 9. Barfing When Stuffed 10. Ripping Up Hoodies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wlhU3pQCKo

So with the new addition of working transmitters I had an idea. I've played on games like TF2 with other players who would play things like music through the game. Some of them would be annoying and just stick their mics by a speaker, but some were directly playing it through their PC. I was thinking that it would be sort of fun to broadcast a bit of music or something similar over a transmitter frequency. However I don't have the faintest idea how one would go about playing audio directly from their PC into the game. Does anyone here know anything that might help?

Look up RX SSTV Or SSTV decoder. I think that's what they used in the portal ARG -

Maybe write down from where in the video you started and stopped decoding so that others may try and help? -

If you use the abbreviations on the decoded bit it says "Calling any station calling any station calling any station from/this is C1. I don't see what C1 means on here. But GOTO is probably just go to. UTS 5 . Doesnt make any sense though. Maybe an error on the decoding? -
