A few days ago I decided to play my characters in a way that depends on their first interactions with other players. If my first interaction was a friendly player giving me food, advice or simply someone who didn't try to kill me - I'd go for a Hero style of gameplay, If I'd go for a long time without meeting another player when I spawned, I'd play reclusive, lonewolf style, avoiding people and conflict. If my first interaction was hostile, I'd go kos bandit. Been having a lot of fun with it, needless to say the lonewolfs survive the longest and it isn't as boring as one might think, playing it safe and paranoid does keep you on edge. My current character had to beat another bambi to death with a wrench mere minutes after spawning, so going for emotionally scarred psycho this time through, we'll see how long I last, how many lives I'll be able to take.

They are still in game, I found one just an hour ago.

Awesome video, poor Randall. Reminds me of the time me and a friend were looting Stary Sobor, a guy comes running, stops and waves at us "Cool, maybe a friendly player" I think. A second later a zombie pops around a corner, attacks him from behind and he falls to the road bleeding heavily. I'm reaching for my rags but my friend reaches for his axe and finishes the job the zombie started. Yea, my friends an asshole, the guy didn't even have any worthwhile loot.

Anyone seen it? If so, where? I've been looking like crazy since the last patch, bet it would look great with my sweet cowboy hat.

Bleeding in general greatly decreased (or accidently removed)? Earlier tonight I got to try out the machete on a group of zombies (dont try it people, stick with the fireaxe), got hit a bunch of times and didn't start to bleed, earlier major arteries would pop open if a zombie even looked at me funny.

(Be warned, this is gonna be a long post, I survived for a surprisingly long time) Righto, first some backstory. I haven't been gaming on the pc for quite a few years, having both an xbox and a ps3 (and a wii, I've got kids) there hasn't really been any need. Then I stumbled upon dayz somehow, watched some videos and realised I HAD to have this game. Went by a friend, told him "These are the system reqs, build me a computer that will run the game", I tossed some money around and waited a few days for the parts to arrive. During this time I watched and read some tutorials, so I wouldn't be a complete noob when I started. The computer arrived, we put it together and installed the game. I created my character, I knew that the options were quite limited, would love to see some more customization there, and fiddled around with the server list until I found one with room and a decent ping. Nighttime, pitch black, cant see shit. Was expecting this, been a lot of bitching in the forums about it, no worries, battery, lamp, equip, turn on, raise hands. Right, I can see a few meters infront of me, the rest of the world is completely black. I adjust the gamma, I know, I know, many of you will call me a cheater, but it was a cloudless night, the stars were out and there's no way it'd be that dark in reality. Trust me, I know darkness, I live in the north of sweden, we see the sun for about 25 minutes each summer and spend the rest of the year in perpetual night. The world is now somewhat visible, I run around in an unknown town, see other fresh spawns that seem as bewildered as me. Ok, water, melee weapon (preferably an axe), food and then I'll work my way from there. Some guy comes up to me, he's got a backpack and some other gear but doesn't look too kitted out. Awesome, maybe he can tell me where the water pump is, how the hell do I talk to this guy? I start fiddling around to figure this out, but abruptly stop as he brings out a hacksaw and attacks me with it. The hell? Killing a fresh spawn with a damned hacksaw? Not on my watch! My time on youtube has taught me how to deal with the likes of you, spacebar brings up my fists of fury and I start flailing wildly, trying to land a punch in the face. The guy panicks and runs off, yea, didn't know who you were messing with didya dipshit? As I see him retreating I think "This will not go unpunished, I'll take you down you sack of shit, youll wake up without your fancy backpack and with that hacksaw lodged sidewise up your *ss". I run after him but stop dead in my tracks as he brings out a gun. Right, dont bring fists to a gunfight my father always said, I turn around and leg it. The spawn area seems dangerous and is probably picked clean anyway, I head inland. Theres nothing but wilderness, even with my gamma cranked up a bit I have a hard time navigating, I'm thirsty as hell and utterly lost. Log off, go to sleep. The next day I log back on and its daytime, the game looks awesome. Still lost, but now I can navigate a bit, keep running. Some time later I come across a small settlement where the doors are still closed and start looking through houses, I know which type building usually spawns good loot but I check everything anyway, I'm desperate. Every now and then I aggro a zombie and have to leg it, I bleed, I bandage, I bleed again. The world is loosing color. I find some canned goods and after a while a waterpump, awesome! I drink untill totally full and follow the road, I look at roadsigns but they tell me nothing. I'm low on blood and now I'm dying of starvation, with a backpack full of canned beans and spagetti, but no way to open them. New town, looks bigger, nice houses, I get into a diner but aggro a zombie in the process. Bugger this, I run no longer, I need food and I need it now. I whip out my fists again and start pummeling the zombie, he goes down over and over again and by the time he's out I'm spraypainting the walls red and questioning the wisdom of taking on the undead unarmed. But I'm rewarded, I find a screwdriver! I actually yell out in joy in real life, I can open cans! I gulp down everything I have in my backpack, loosing a silly amount of food in the process, but my stomach is pretty full and I'm guessing I'll start regenerating in a while. I keep searching the town, its full of zombies and I dont even think about engaging them again. After a while I find the holy grail, a shiny fireaxe on the floor of some residential building. I pick up the weapon and smile to myself - payback time. I blast through the town like my viking ancestors, any zombie unlucky enough to cross my path fall to my mighty battleaxe, I'm a sexy shoeless god of war! I loot the town clean, coming across a lot of usefull stuff, even a Mosin in pristine condition, though I cant seem to find any bullets, no worries, I can still threaten people if need be. I've got a backpack full of usefull stuff (half of which dont actually serve any purposs in the game as of yet, but I didn't know that at the time), my trusty battleaxe and a sweet rifle, time to head north and find those military bases I've heard so much about. I wander into an even bigger town, Stary Sobor (the names of these places, jeez) and go about splitting zombieskulls and looting houses. I come across two players kitted out in full military gear and some rather nasty looking M4's, they tell me to chill, make sure I'm not gonna attack them, I put my axe on my back and tell them that I have no ammo for the mosin, and that I'm totally new to the game. They turn out to be pretty awesome, they give me a canteen and a can opener (sweet, no more wasting 40% of the food of each can I open), tell me some stuff about the game and let me tag along as we go through the town. They scare off some french dude that was looting the supermarket and end up killing some other guy who wouldn't lower his weapon. Turns out its my lucky day, the guy had a bigger backpack, a shitload of 7,62 ammo, a bipod, a scope for the mosin and some other usefull stuff. The two guys are very patient while I do my best to loot the corpse, took my quite a while. Unfortunately a buddy turns up at my door and tells me its time to head to the gym, I thank the two heros and log off in a bush. When I get back I decide to head to the military bases, I might have some pretty sweet gear now but I wouldn't mind getting decked out in some tactical stuff. I head northwest, come across another player in full military gear, turns out its a russian without a microphone, we try to talk a little, he drops some sodas and medical gear on the ground even though I tell him I dont need anything, I drop something I think might be usefull and pick up some of the stuff he gave me, we part ways without incident and I keep heading north. I seem to be quite lucky, my first two encounters with other players outside the spawnarea have been friendly. I get to the military bases and airfield, I loot them clean, swapping my mosin for a m4, pick up both a pistol and revolver, a shitload of mags and ammo, tactical vest, helmet, gas mask, the works - I look like I just wandered out of a Michael Bay movie. On the airfield I have my third friendly encounter, some polish dude looking for a scope for his m4, we search together for a short while, then he lags and disconnects. By now I'm starting to get a bit dissapointed, every player I come across seem to be a nice guy, I was expecting to get sniped every time I poked my head around a corner, time to take some risks. I log into a server with 39/40 players (before this I have looked for servers with around 20 people of less when I've had to switch server due to disconnects or such) and start heading south, Cherno and Elektro being my target. On my way there I notice that both my revolver and pistol are ruined, no idea how that happened, they were pristine when I found them, I hadn't gotten shot but zombies had taken a few bites out of me, I drop the guns and make a mental note to hit the military places west of the cities first to restock. I also drop the gas mask, read online that it does bugger all currently and I dont really like the look - helmet and aviator glasses will suffice. I stop at a barn and check through it, finding some usefull stuff but fall off the ledge and break my legs, F*CK! I've got no morphine or sticks for a splint, I crawl around looking for anything to fix my broken leg, coming up empty handed, I start crawling towards a settlement but real life interrupts and I have to log off. When I get back on I'm both pleasantly surprised and dissapointed to find that my legs are healed, I dreaded the crawl to town, but if broken bones can be fixed by simply relogging then it's not really something to worry about, they should fix that, this should be a hardcore survival game and broken bones should have an impact. I get to balota airfield and restock, finding a new pistol and some other bits and bobs, when I'm done with the prison at the eastern edge of airfield I decide its time to hit the big cities, but just as I'm leaving a guy in military gear runs past me, doesn't seem to notice me as he heads into the prison. My 7 year old son is sitting next to me, telling me to follow the guy, to see if he wants to be friends. I'm sceptical, I want to hit the towns, but my son is adamant. I go back to the prison, greeting the player - whom I notice has a friend. I hear him say something in a language I cant understand with the voice of a child or someone in their early teens. I get a bad feeling and quickly get behind cover, I tell them that I dont want any trouble and that I'll be on my way. One of the guys gets out into the open with his hands up, saying something I cant understand, the other guy moves around the house to flank me - f*ck, I'm gonna get mercd. I tell my son that these guys aren't friendly, that I have to kill them - bring up my rifle and line up the shot on the guy trying to flank, but my son is almost in tears "Dont kill them daddy, they just want to be friends". Bugger this, I cant shoot a child infront of my son, I decide to leg it, sprinting away towards a small building, praying I'll make it. But the distance is too far, bullets start flying past me and soon they find their target, I see the black screen of death for the first time. All in all I'd say my first life went great, I'm guessing I had some incredible luck, but being something of a crazy survivalist in real life probably helps in a game like this. I had a blast, and am going to hit a hardcore server next to test life without 3rd person. I'm grateful both to the awesome friendly players I came across, and the bandits who gunned me down (I hope they enjoy my gear, I had a lot of sweet stuff - unless it all got ruined in the hail of bullets), because lets face it - this game would be really boring if everyone played nice. Anyway, that's the story of my first life, hope yours was as awesome as mine.

HOW TO USE THE WEAPON CLEANING KIT- DayZ Standalone
Iarfur replied to TheModernGamer94's topic in New Player Discussion
Does it work on attachments or just the gun itself? -
And that was the second time I died... Just back from my first try at a hardcore server, no friendly interactions, managed to get some pretty nice gear together before running out of a hangar at the nw airfield and into some bullets, didn't even see the shooter.
